When you are in need of locksmith services, the price tag can sometimes be more than you can afford. But we have good news: there are a few ways to save your hard earned money and still get the security services you need. The following tips can help you avoid expensive, time-consuming services:

Keep a spare key

One of the most expensive locksmith services out there is car key replacement. Nowadays, car keys are created with a transponder chip or only come in a FOB or Proximity style. These keys can be quite expensive on their own—not to mention the cost of having a professional locksmith cut and program the key to your vehicle to allow it to function.

Get a spare key made before you need it. By having the key already, it allows the locksmith to simply duplicate the key at a lower cost than creating a brand new one. For FOB and Proximity keys, if you purchase the key on your own and then hire a locksmith to program it to your vehicle, you will save a pretty penny and still have the spare you need in the event that you lose your original.

To avoid having to worry about purchasing a duplicate key altogether, request a spare key when you purchase a vehicle. Many times a car dealer will only provide you with one key. If you are paying for the car, they might as well provide you with all the proper accessories.

Don’t lose on changing locks

Lock changes—whether they are at your home or business—can be pretty steep depending on the security level of the lock you need. This is another example where you can cut costs by purchasing the materials yourself. If you know what type of lock you need, most distributors will charge you wholesale cost. Then, you can hire a locksmith to install the locks for you.

An even better way to save money when changing your locks is to have the locks rekeyed. This is where the locksmith uses your existing lock and manipulates the pins inside the cylinder to fit a new key. It’s one of the most requested services from new home owners.  With this money saving tip, you can feel safe and secure in the new home and still have some money in your pocket.

Saving on surveillance

If you are looking to protect your home or office with CCTV cameras (which can be super expensive), we suggest a little trickery. If you are just looking to deter potential burglars or trespassers, simply hang a surveillance sign. There are also decoy cameras that look 100 percent real. If you insist on the real thing, a locksmith will be able to show you many different options. However, the motion activated cameras are usually the most cost effective.

Pay careful attention to these basic and easy tips and you should be able to save lots of money on potentially costly lock services. If you're passionate about saving money, nothing can ever rival being smart and thinking ahead all of the time.
