Piano Moving
$580
This moving company goes by multiple names (Miami Movers Vitta, Aventura Movers, South Beach Movers)
The quote was for 3 hours of work to move a bedroom set from North Miami to West Palm beach. The total drive time is 45-60 minutes; 60 minutes being worst possible case with lots of traffic.
Owner quoted $280 for a total of 3 hours of work. On 3 different occasions I verified that he accepted credit cards. Each time he said he accepts credit cards.
He was asked if he can wrap the furniture to protect it and he said that would be an additional charge for the tape, approximately $30.
The bed had been completely disassembled the night before and ready for the movers to wrap it and get it loaded into the truck the following morning.
The movers arrived promptly and had me sign the time they arrived. They also said it's "cash only". We told them we were specifically told they took credit cards, we called the owner and he said he didn't know about the credit cards and it would be a pain to accept and he would charge a little more; this is the same owner that said on three occasions that he accepts credit cards.
We decided to pay cash in the end and didn't want the hassle.
The movers took 2 hours to wrap the bedroom set and leave. I was completely shocked at how long it took them to do this. It took me less then 15 minutes to disassemble and lay everything on the floor in a row so they could wrap it and load it in the truck.
The movers left my house at 11:50 to head to the destination.
I receive a call at approximately 2:00pm asking where the furniture is.
I said, I don't know they should have been there at 1:00 at the latest 1:15.
At 2:45 we called the owner to tell him the truck hasn't shown up.
At 3:30 we get a call saying they will be there soon and they are very sorry for the delay.
At 5:00 we call and they tell us the truck broke down and they are waiting for another truck.
At 7:00, 7:30 and 8:00 we kept calling and didn't receive any answers.
I decided to drive up 95 to locate the truck and found the truck 15 miles before the destination; the truck was broken down and they had moved the furniture to a different truck.
We arrived at the destination. One of the original movers was there but he said the other person left and they got a new drivers. The driver wanted to charge us $580 or they would not unload the truck.
I told him it shouldn't have been more than 3 hours of work and it was not our problem that the truck broke down. Plus it should not have taken 2 hours to wrap the bed with blankets.
We ended up calling the police who was very helpful in this situation.
This is the classic "nightmare" moving company you hear about. The owner even emailed me when I gave him a bad review and he never apologized and gave the excuse of the truck breaking down.
I don't have a problem with the truck breaking down; although it should be common if the trucks are maintained.
The problem is that we were being overcharged for services. The move should not in anyway taken as long as it did.
The customer is not responsible for a truck breaking down, and the customer should also have been notified if they were not heading straight up to the destination. When they left the originating location they gave us the impression they were heading straight up to the destination. It took them 3 hours after I called for them to tell us they are almost there, and then another hour or so to tell us they broke down.
The from when they left at 11:50 and and the time we found out they broke down 5:00 is completely unaccounted for.
I would NOT recommend this mover.
