"Thank you for choosing Burkhardt Heating for the installation of your new furnace and glad you were satisfied with our expert installation crew. The issue began when this customer added air duct cleaning after our agreed price to his installation. At the time of the service he did not pay for the duct cleaning. Andrea, our office manager, called him a few days later for payment and this customer claimed his job was paid in full. She called again a short time after triple checking the paperwork and he threatened us with the BBB and a poor review on Angie's List if we called again because he insisted he was paid in full. Then it was referred to me (Doug) and I immediately called and after his previous threats and a few questions by me it was obvious this customer knew he owed for the air duct cleaning but was trying to get out of paying the final $475.00. He was prepared for my questions with various responses and excuses such as the agreement form was unclear, the men accepted his payment, to even questioning if he initialed the adding of the duct cleaning. These answers prove that he knew he owed us. When he was called out on that, he predictably played the "I'm offended" card. The true offense is caused by this customer who tried and threatened us in trying to get out of paying for his duct cleaning. He called back the next morning with the "I see where you might see I owe for the duct cleaning" and said he was going to send a check to pay the final balance. Two weeks later, he was paid in full."

"Dennis performed a tune-up on your packaged furnace on December 21, 2015. The reason why he didn't notice a crack in the heat exchanger at that time was because there was NONE at that time. Cracks in heat exchangers can occur over the course of weeks or months and your next call was almost (7) months later. Needless to say a crack in and among itself within the heat exchanger would not do as you claim. So it is quite presumptuous to make the claim that you did. We apologize to you for not being able to see a crack that wasn't there when we were at your home."

Technician arrived promptly and quickly identified that the unit had a block of ice due to no freon. Technician spent 30 minutes removing the block of ice by turning on the furnace to heat things up. The remaining 2 hours was spent removing a dirty filter, cleaning the outside unit, and identifying a leak in the coils. My tenant reports the technician did spend considerable time on the phone with another technician discussing the other technician's separate job. I'm not sure the 2.5 hours billed were productive hours for the technician per the reports from my tenant.
I was told that the R22 unit precluded the technician from solving the cooling issue by adding freon. He told me he could lose his license if he added freon to an R22 unit. I don't enough to dispute the validity of that claim. Because the work to identify the source of and the subsequent repair of the coil would cost $800-$1200 I felt I had no choice but to explore replacing the HVAC unit altogether.
The woman at the office kindly set me up for a visit from the owner Kurt the next day to quote me a price on a new unit.
The company owner Kurt arrived, was greeted by my tenant and after pleasantries was led downstairs by my tenant. As they walked my tenant asked how long it would take to get a new unit installed in the condo. Kurt said it would be at least 7 days and my tenant questioned if it could be done sooner. Kurt proceeded to tell the tenant how busy they are and that "you are just a renter, I'll deal with the landlord." When asked to repeat himself, Kurt repeated this statement again. My tenant took offense to this and told Kurt so. Both parties have told me things went downhill from there and Kurt was quickly asked to leave. Kurt admits to me he delayed, despite numerous request, in leaving the unit. He delayed he told me so that he could to look the job requirements over ,write some things down, and that he chose to leave out the door he wanted rather than the quickest way out. In addition , my tenant claims Kurt turned around and stared him down multiple times on the stairs. Kurt admitted to me he could have handled things better.
Kurt I and I have spoken and had a few good conversations but today Kurt is blaming the situation solely on my tenant, calling him "a typical millennial who gets what they want by bullying others around." He repeated this seeming disdain for millenials on a Facebook post upon Burkhardt's page responding to a post by my tenant. I hope he understands the dangers of stereotyping a few decades of his future/present clients.
Kurt initially offered to complete the job at the price of roughly $2800-$3300 for a new unit with credit given for the $189 from the visit the day prior. However today we mutually have agreed it's probably best to part ways following this incident. When I asked Kurt if he would consider not charging me the $189 for yesterday's initial service call in light of what happened his response was a snide he'd "have to check to see if his technician was Ok with not being paid".
I feel for the most part Kurt showed me respect as the customer but I cannot say the same for how he admitted to his dealings with my tenant and for his disdain in general for millennials and renters. If you are asking Burkhardt to deal with your renter or you are a younger customer I would be cautious. I trusted Angie's list on this one and felt it let me down.
"When your tenant was notified that is would take about a week for an installation, he threw a temper tantrum, claimed I had a bad attitude, and before I could complete my work that you, the landlord asked me to do, threatened to call the police and barraged me with continuous 'F' bombs. In my 26 years in this business, never had an experience like this. We appreciate your advice on improving our customer service skills, as Burkhardt Heating is still the only HVAC company in the Milwaukee market that has received Angie's List "Super Service" award every year with the most 'Page of Happiness' nominations. I truly feel sorry for you to have to deal with such an immature tenant."
"Thank you for providing a review on the service of your furnace. When a homeowner has a furnace that is over 30 years old, we do recommend our customers to think about replacing the furnace soon. It is only common sense."
"Thank you for choosing Burkhardt Heating on the repair of your furnace and glad we could get it repaired quickly."
