Jason called on Dec 30 to cancel an appointment for Jan 2, 2014 that had been scheduled the prior week.  He said he needed to go over things to make sure it was work he would do.  Bottom line was he was not interested in providing an estimate for work on a home I did not yet own.  He said he had spent too much time and money doing estimates that that bank would later decided they would not finance.  I reminded Jason that on Angies' List he said he did free estimates and he said he would only do an estimate if I would pay him for his time.
Response from J & J CONTRACTORS I LLC
"We like to first apologize for not being able to provide you with an estimate for the house you would like to purchase. When you had called in on 12/27 you had set an apt. with our secretary and that paperwork then goes to the salesman involved with whatever line of work it is. Depending upon what projects and estimates are going on that salesman may not respond immediately but it was within 3 days of the initial appointment set up that you were contacted. We do offer free estimates but it is subject to the guaranteed work that needs to be done on a home that an individual owns. Due to the amount of time and work that is involved in an estimate - with job costing and other office personal preparing the proper paperwork for a quote. We hope you can understand and again apologize for any inconvenience. We will address the “free estimate” and have a new sub-clause stating the guidelines of our “free estimates”. I was very pleased with the service.  J&J personnel were really nice to work with, and they did good quality work.  I liked how they worked with me to keep the costs down, although I ended up upgrading my countertop because I found one I really liked that was a little more through the granite supplier.  J&J went beyond expectations by getting a painter in to make the area right by the backsplash look really nice.  They also completed the project in a timely manner.

My roof is pretty bad, so I had to replace the whole roof. I did not used them because I he did not talk to me at all on what he's going to do or anything like that and if I talk to someone I'm not comfortable with, I'm not going to hire them. His bid was actually lower than the company I went with. He just looked at my roof and tell me the numbers. He responded quickly but didn't talk to me on what they're going to do. He showed up. I don't like their approach and I was not impressed with them.

We did not go past the estimate.  However, there was never a followup call to even see if I wanted to further.

Jason was our general contractor for a major re-modelling at our house. He is professional, punctual and very personable. He matched our price for most of the quotes that we got, but he did a very high-quality job. Do not go to him if you are looking for the cheapest cost, but I would definitely recommend him for his quality. All his sub-contractors are just as good. J&J completely transformed our house with floor-to-ceiling refinements. The work was done within budget and before time. As someone who deals with suppliers for a multi-billion company, I can vouch for Jason and I know quality when I see it.
One of his strengths is dealing with FHA loans which come with a lot of paperwork. Having a contractor with expertise in that is ESSENTIAL to retaining your sanity. Jason does most of the heavy lifting for those projects and we actually completed the work before time. On top of that, he responds to any request WITHIN 24 HOURS after the work has been completed, as per his guarantee of standing behind his work. I will be updating this review periodically based on his after-sales service. So far, he has been OUTSTANDING!

They rarely have a change order unless it is initiated by the client. I have never known them to miss deadlines. I have seen the work on Jason's home which was on the Parade of Homes. I would have J&J work on my home and would highly recommend them to my family friends and clients.

Very professional.  Everyone involved was prompt and courteous from the beginning of the project to the end.  Bob did an excellent installation job.  My concern that did arise during the final walk through was addressed to my satisfaction.

A piece of our trim had been blown off in the wind. The ripped off piece of aluminum trim was along the peak. We have a 1 1/2 story home. Being that high up we called a couple contractors. It was a small job by siding standards and most of them did not want to bother with the job. I made the call during the week to J&J and explained the problem and he said someone would drive by, take a look and get back to me. The same week he called to give me a price, and told me he would have to order the coil since he did not have my green in stock. I asked if I could keep the coil in case this happens somewhere else and he agreed.

2 men came out on a Saturday morning and got right to work. Replacing the ripped off trim did not take but 30 minutes. They bent the trim to match the peak and all went well. There really wasn't anything to clean up but they were courteous and professional.

I would not hesitate to call and use them on a larger job.

They were listed on Angie's List and there were some reports written on them.  They did a good job.  They did it all in one day which was good.  Apparently, they have their resources.  I called other people and a lot of them that were on Angie's List and some said that it would take 2 days, 3 days, or maybe even 5 days.  I was impressed with that about J & J Contractor.  They said they would do it in good weather, but it was overcast that day.  It didn't end up raining.  It sprinkled a little bit.  I hoped that they might have held off, but they said that they worked the year around.  If the weather gets too bad, then they cover it up and wait for better weather.  The forecast was calling for a chance of rain.  They just took the chance and went ahead.  They took the risk and as it turned out everything worked out okay.  I was a little nervous at 3 or 4 in the afternoon when it did start to sprinkle.  It sprinkled a little bit and held off and they were able to finish.  They finished at 6.30 or 7 at night.  The after clean-up was very good.  They gave me one of the better prices I received.  They weren't the lowest, but I was a little hesitant to go with the lowest price.  They gave me a good price.  The quality was also good.  I would use them again in the future.  They did a good job but not a great job.  I was expecting a great job after talking to the owner personally.  There was a little bit of lack of information between me and the owner.  He came out personally and booked the job.  The lack of information is the only thing holding me back from giving them all A's.  I didn't get back to posting any information on them just for the fact that I wanted to see how the roof held up for some time.  It was done in April and it's rained on it.  I wanted to see how it went through the winter now.  I live in Cudahy Wisconsin which is in Milwaukee area.  We get our share of snow and when the snow comes at times we get ice damming where the water works its way up under the shingles.  I wanted to see how that went this winter.

[Note: I added a final update on the project at the end of the review]

Now that the project is mostly finished, the roof and siding look great.

The project itself was not so pretty. They started two weeks after the date that they told me they would start, then it was a rainy week, so they ended up starting even later. They did the tear off and coverend the exposed roof with a tarp during the rain, so it seemed to stay fairly dry. The guys who did the work were great - very friendly and thourogh.

Somehow there was damage to the wiring coming in from the house that they discovered after taking the siding off. I was told that they couldn't put new siding on until it was repaired, and they recommended an electrician to do the work. I was worried about leaving everything exposed while I tried to get other electricians come out to do estimates, so I went with the guy they recommended. $1500 and almost one month later, there still is electical tape holding the wires together. I do not fault J & J for that, but I am disappointed with the electrician that they recommended.

They did a great job of cleaning up the yard after the project and took care of several vents and other things that I needed. I thought that the price was very fair. Their estimate was the best from amongst several companies I spoke to. It was higher after the electrical work though.

***Update, J&J helped me to get the electrical sorted out. The electrical did not initially pass inspection. Mark made sure that the electrician came back and fixed everything correctly. It then passed and the project is complete (December 2011)! It really looks great, and I have recommended them to other people.

It was excellent and I can't say enough about them. The company is owned by a father and his son. They did an excellent job and very efficiently. Their employees were all very pleasant. They did the work in extremely cold weather. I wanted the weather shield to overlap onto the fascia and they had to take off the gutters to do that. They took off the gutters and I told them that the gutters had icing on them and it would be very difficult to put them back on again. Jerry, one of the two owners, told me that they would put in new gutters at no cost to me. They put in new gutters on the whole house at no additional cost. I was looking for a good firm and I found a good firm, and they happened to have the lowest price of any of the firms by far. They put in the type of roof that I wanted. They had to do additional carpentry work.

They did a very good job. They were here when they were supposed to be here. They did the job the way they were supposed to and stood by their price. They had someone else paint when they were done and I don't know the sub-contractor's name but they also did a good job.

We selected J&J Contractor I LLC because they were honest with us from the beginning and didn't make a big flashy presentation.  We wanted to know what work would be performed, how much and how long it would take. They were very straight forward and there were no surprises of any extra work that needed to be done in the contract.  They told us everything up front.  They told us we would need our dormers siding redone and why.  Other company's never mentioned this to us, but put it in the estimate. After receiving the contract it took a few weeks to hear back from J&J Contractor I LLC.  But once we got that call everything happened pretty fast. They were able to come out later that week!  They arrived on time and finished within a few days. The gutters took a little longer to get installed due to the weather.  Everyone we talked with was very courteous.  We will definitely have them come back and replace the siding on the house.  They will be our first go to company for other remodeling projects.

They were very thorough. If there were unexpected things that came up during the course of the replacement, they took care of them in a quality manner. They had kind, friendly workers. They are reasonably priced, and they do a thorough, quality job.

I called J&J to ask them for an estimate for a complete roof replacement. This would include a tear off and to have them install a new designer series roof. This would be done on an 1900 square 'L' shaped ranch. Jason came within 3 days of my calling and measured the roof (this was done while I was at work).. The day after he looked at the job I received the estimate. It was very competitive. I signed the contract and found the entire J&J organization to be very professional. Within 1.5 days I had a new roof. When they were done putting on the roof you would not even know they were there. They left the landscape immaculate, all scrap from the roof was removed. I have dealt with many contractors through the years and they are excellent. From the time of calling for the estimate, signing the contract and the work...top notch.
