"I'm very sorry this estimating/bidding attempt has "fallen through the cracks" and I will be back in touch to see if we can get this worked out still. This was a difficult job to figure out and was during an overly busy time when Angie's List sold many more of "The Big Deal" than were able to cope with and I had to ask them not to sell any more! As you can read from our other reviews, we do well when we get hired and fully engaged in a job."

He was easy to get ahold of and prompt at responding. The plumber and contractor who helped with the project were great - professional, pleasant, cleaned up and most importantly, did great work. Simon came by many times to bring items needed to complete the project and make sure all was going well. I especially was grateful that he dealt with the Home Improvement store, to make sure that missing parts were made available. All in all, he made the whole experience very pleasant and I'm sure I'll be calling him for my next project.

"Thank you, thank you. What we love about the Angie's list experience is meeting people like you who know there's nothing easy about remodeling, and you appreciate what we do and are willing to say so. You made our day! Simon"

We had several contractors come out to look at and bid our project, with the majority of the bids coming out to right around $5K. So we expected to pay right around this amount and this is pretty much where Simon's bid came out. We were told that it would take 4-6 days to finish the work (40 hours of labor).
First off, SCS was able to get started right away, which was nice and initially progress seemed very quick.
Originally, the beams were not going to be hidden into the attic and that was not part of the bid, but Simon told us that it would be $985 and add 1-2 days to the project to hide both beams in the attic, so we told him to proceed with that.
A second addition to the job that was not part of the original bid was re-texturing a hallway ceiling and a small section at the bottom of the stairs that had popcorn ceiling. I did all of the removal and cleanup of the popcorn and got it prepped for texturing. Simon said that the extra texturing would add a couple hours to the project, which he basically brushed off as a non-issue, so we agreed and I told them to proceed with that as well.
Once the basic demo and framing was done (by the third day if memory serves), we hit a snag when the inspector came out and said that the stairs that were worked on were not to code and would have to be redone. This added a half day of rip out and repair.
Now that the construction was complete, it was time to drywall and then finish. This is where time really started to stack up, with some days seeming like very little was completed (from what we could see, a couple of pieces of drywall cut and screwed up per day for a couple of days). Next came taping and mudding, which again, took days and days.
At the end of the second week, we were asking how close we were, and told it would hopefully be done by the beginning of the following week. When we would ask if everything was going well or if anything was wrong, we were simply told that it takes a lot of work to get the drywall right so that it will look good in the end.
The end of the third week was the same, keep in mind, pretty much all of this was just to mud and prep the drywall for texturing.
A couple of the areas I have concern with and point out that they seem to be a bit of a hard line in the mud, which I am told will completely disappear with texture and painting.
The texturing was finally done mid-4th week. Hooray!
Remember how I said that I had some concerns with some of the areas having lines, and was told that they would disappear with texture and paint? Well, those lines are still there and after several coats of expensive paint (hoping that more would help them disappear), we can still see, and feel, where most of the patching was done (which gets pretty obvious at night when shadows fall across the walls).
Several weeks go by and we hear from Simon that he has been looking at the job and wants to come talk numbers, we say OK.

Simon arrives and drops a bill in our laps that is over $2,000 above what we were expecting (and that includes the $985 we agreed to for the extra work add on).  $2,000 over a $5,000 bill is a 40% addition, which shocked us, especially since we asked Simon initially before work started if his bid included a contingency and he indicated that it did.
After expressing concern, pointing out some of the mistakes, and pointing out the fact that we never, not once, received a call from Simon stating that we were blowing past the budget, only then did Simon drop the bill by $1,000, which was still well over what we were expecting.
So the taste that we are left with is:
1) A job that took 3 weeks longer than we were told (with no real major problems along the way except for the stairs that were not built to code that had to be fixed in order to pass inspection)
2) A job that was well over budget
3) Worst of all, a job that does not look very good (and if you are wondering, no, Simon did not offer to fix the mistakes)

Update:
After reading the negative review Simon called and offered to fix the bulges and obvious lines in the drywall. We had Fred, one of Simon's subs that was very good by the way, come out to fix the drywall. He got it done and now it looks quite a bit better.

Still do not recommend, but at least the worst of the eyesores are gone.
Response from Simon's Construction Services
"Thanks very much for the accountability, which I share with my team - we had some difficulty with texture matching there it's true, but succeeded quite well in the end - and you did say it was a good job the day I came back to see you, so I'm sorry I did not know you needed any mistakes fixed. However I will be calling to offer to fix any thing you would like to be fixed, no problem. At the time you both seemed to agree the very substantial reduction in the bill was fair, but since it now seems not to have been enough we will still endeavor to make you happier. We found you to be very nice people and I think we can still achieve your satisfaction - With our best regards, Simon & crew."

This was a major undertaking, due to the placement of the cabin on the lot we could not get any heavy equipment down to the site. Everything had to be dug, carried and built by hand. Simon and his subcontractor Eric were great throughout the process providing improvement ideas as we went that made the final product exceed our expectations. Simon was transparent in his dealings with us and we always felt comfortable with the timing, billing and overall quality of the project. I would highly recommend this company for any type of home improvement project you are considering.

"Since apologies and thank you - but I think you may have us mixed up with another service provider - we have not yet been hired by you and no money has changed hands. "Thank you for your call, will be waiting for a bid. [Member Name Removed]" - This is your last message to me yesterday. And we just had a cordial conversation about how I am going to see the job today 7/8/15. Readers of this review should realize that ever since Angie's list awarded our company 3 Super Service Awards (3 separate categories) for 2014, our phones ring constantly - and even though we have hired more people there is sometimes a delay in being able to get to see everyone. But we will respond and visit everyone as soon as possible.Thank you Angie's List for a wonderful problem to have! SW"

It went very smoothly.  I talked with Simon every day; sometimes several times in one day.  The resources he provided were very skilled and listen to all our suggestion; good and bad!  Although the project went over estimate by about 20% we were so happy with the result we didn't mind much.

We recently hired Simon's Construction Service/SCS Contracting to paint the exterior of our house.  We have dealt with Simon Way and his workers before and knew we could count on getting a reasonable bid and the best workers.  The painting job went seamlessly, thanks in large part to painter Dave Robin (such a good worker!).  They scraped and sanded and primed and painted (cleaning up as they went ? much appreciated).  The final painting made our house look its best and I am sure will last a long time.  Thanks again, Simon, for a job well done.  Also, Simon assisted us in getting a bid on some updated attic insulation we needed, and that will help us keep more of an even temp in our house (Simon?s sources are always good ones).

It went very well. SCS Contracting used their judgement on what was needed and the best way to repair the house. They were in excellent communication with me throughout the process. Each additional cost (from what we originally thought) was asked before it was undertaken. The final product was very impressive.

The "Big deal" included contractor drawings, which was one of the main reasons I went with him. I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated. I've been more than patient with his continued "misunderstandings" on what it was that I wanted and the length of time it has taken (purchased on 11/23/14).  He read my first review (this is the edited version) and put a response on his "side" that was extremely upsetting.  Here is his response and my response in BOLD:

Thank you for letting us know how you feel. Please remember we took no money from you for any of this. Here's my side of the story: Originally you paid $49 to Angie's list (not to me) for "The Big Deal" for a kitchen remodel. (It was for a BATHROOM remodel!) (I can refund that). Upon arriving at your house and meeting you and your husband, in conversation you said you were more interested in several other remodel items, ( I did tell him of other jobs in conversation as he was there for the bathroom remodel (just moved into my home and we are remodeling etc. many areas).  I told him several times that he was there for the bathroom as I wanted to make sure that there were no misunderstandings.  Again I got the "big deal" in order to get the drawings as this was something offered not by other deals. A drawing obviously would not be included on any other remodeling jobs we may have agreed to in addition to the bathroom). including basement windows and exterior walk up - and also an enlarged basement bathroom. I told you this might not be straightforward and we wouldn't have the computerized drawings (that easily are accomplished by our kitchen cabinet company). (He did say he could get me drawings of the bathroom but it wouldn't be the same as a kitchen remodel. Why isn't this clear on Angie's list??) You said the priority was the exterior walk up several times. (HMMM... I did say I wanted it done as we we are remodeling and moving master bedroom to basement, hence the need for bathroom expansion!  Again, I made it VERY clear his priority was to the bathroom.  I know I made it clear as it was a fear of mine that he would only do the basement easement and forget about the bathroom and drawings.  This fear was due to the fact that he did not spend much time on reviewing the existing bathroom, and did not even take measurements!) My concrete subcontractor and I had at least four visits (He and the subcontractor came out one time, and he himself came out two additional times.....)  to your house discussing the scope and location of the work, and you changed it at least twice, (the second time he came out was to review again the easement windows and door area and to take measurements as he didn't previously.... ) including one place where it would have been impossible to get our digging machines in. (I told him about two areas that the basement door could go... one I would like more than the other but not knowing if possible... I am not a contractor so how would I know that machines would or would not fit? FYI I have received from 2 other businesses an estimate to do the door no problems. I did change what we would do for the easement job as he told me that it could not be done where I wanted it so I had to change the windows that would have been replaced etc.to help be conducive to the limitations). The drawings of the walk up were not completed because there are still questions about the location and plumbing pipes hidden in the ground etc. (Huh? Thought it couldn't be done??? Also, I gave him $15.00 to have the lines spray painted) You had begun doing some of the demolition work yourself on the inside of the house which caused us some concern as to how well we could together. (WHAT? The demolition was removal of drywall in a basement room due to a leak!! This had NOTHING to do with the work he would do! ALSO I did ask about what there was that we could do to help with the cost of both jobs, including possibly digging the dirt, and he did not mention that it would be a problem). We gave you two bids on two versions of the job, with the discount, and also gave an estimate on the enlarged bathroom. ( Yes, the first estimate, which did include the basement door???? AFTER he said that it could not be done... so I pointed it out and that is why another estimate was done that was wrong as well!! This is after repeating to him several times as he didn't seem to get it! How hard is it... 4 total easement windows to be replaced??? When he came to the house I had to go over again what it was that was needed to be done in the bathroom, it was then that he actually took measurements for the bathroom!! The bathroom estimate included things like new toilet and movement...which the original was staying and not being moved and a new door, which I told him I wanted to use the existing door so all doors would match...and to save money. This was only a few issues i had with this estimate.  ALSO, a drawing was not given.  After asking where the drawing was he told me that he could draw something up but the kitchen remodels is where he gives the drawing.  This was where I felt I had been more than patient and this was more hassle then I wanted to deal with, can't imagine him actually doing the work and what issues would arise!!! FYI all these conversations can be backed up with not only my husband but my 21 year old daughter as they were there as well). Cordially, and sincerely wishing you all the best, Simon Estimated cost: 24000.0

"Here is a letter I am sending out explaining our recent business situation. I have more to do for you still I know and I will do it. Well I have to admit some fault.......Let me say the Angie’s List community has been wonderful to us and has blessed our lives amazingly. Your kind words on these pages gave us 3 awards here in 2014 (credit to our craftsmen), and the amount of work that has come to us through you all is astonishing; plus you have all been so very nice to know. We have had to expand our crew size (including an apprentice) and re-structure the business as a corporation with the help of a CPA. This takes effect in a few days before the end of April. There has been much time & energy spent on this which has taken focus away from our estimating and client relations. I apologize for these lapses in bidding and communication but I will make sure they are rectified by whatever compensation is appropriate. Some health problems amongst the crew and myself have also been a factor in the recent time period. I believe we will be back on track after our new corporation (SCS Contracting Inc.) becomes active and then we will have a fresh start in May next month to serve you better- please bear with us, and thank you for your patience. Simon & Janet Way & Crew."

Simon Way, the general contractor, was great to work with.  He kept me informed of what needed to be done throughout the project and hired sub-contractors (electrician and plumbers) who did a wonderful job.  They just came in, did what was needed and left.  They didn't leave a big mess for me to clean up either.  The whole project was pretty much handled by Fred Stevens, the finish carpenter.  I can't say enough good things about Fred, except that he knows what he's doing, is a perfectionist with his work and a real craftsman.  All the people I came into contact with were very pleasant and professional, and I highly recommend SCS Contracting.
The work went very smoothly considering several problems they encountered:  the wrong type of sub-floor material had been installed, lights in the bathroom weren't a suitable type, trim around kitchen fluorescent light box needed to be made, new doors and frames to replace existing ones were a slightly different size than the cut out space available, plumbing and faucet in one room in the garage present a challenge to use existing materials.
There was a lot of work involved with both the remodeling and completing the new construction work that was never finished.  The project took longer than any of us anticipated but the end result is outstanding.

He brought in Huntwood Cabinets and provided a kitchen design for new cabinets and full set of contractor drawings based on what I wanted with my changeover to a regular range instead of an in-wall oven and current setup.
Since he is so busy right now, I decided to go with someone else for the renovation since I had a faster timeline to get it done.  I will probably have him do one of the other projects that I have scheduled earlier next year.
