Alan Lynch came out to give an estimate. Before he could give the estimate he went on the carport and house roof to look at them. Afterwards, he gave me the estimate of about $ 8,200.00 and a folder which has their reference, insurance, business license and handouts info for the roof material as well as a sample of the EPDM. Alan even had shingle samples in his truck that my husband and I were able to look at so that we could pick the color we like for our roof. I was impressed by this because I had an estimate from a different company who came and just looked at the house and quoted me for $ 15,000 without even looking at the roof. I felt they were over priced. On June 14, their workers came and took off the old roof of the house and carport. I saw how bad the carport was especially the plywood because they were old and rotten that's why it was leaking. They put new plywood on the carport, installed the skylight and shingles on the house. There was a miscommunication about the skylight. The workers did not know that my husband and I wanted it. It was written on the proposal form by Alan but the work order that the workers had did not have it. They already removed the old roof which my husband marked to indicate where the skylight would go. I called the office about this and the person I talked to cleared it up by apologizing for his oversight and calling the workers that a skylight does need to be installed. The workers then asked me where I would like it put and they marked the spot. It was off from my husband's original mark but it was not that much. Overall, they did a good job and cleaned-up. The following week I got a call from their office to set-up a walk through with Michael on June 22 at noon. He came and told me of the 21 plywood they placed and added that to the bill which amounted to $9,290.32. He then gave me a copy of the bill. However, what I didn't expect was that he wanted payment right then. I thought he was just going to talk about what they did. This should have been communicated to me over the phone so that I got the payment ready. Fortunately, my credit union is not that far so I asked Michael to follow me there so I could get a cashier's check. My only complaint is the breakdown in communication about the skylight and that what the walk through appointment meant was that they're collecting payment. Hopefully they work on this in the future. Otherwise I'm pleased with their work.
Description of Work: A Better Roofing replaced our leaky carport and house roofing. They replaced all the old and rotten plywood on the carport as well as some on the house. They put EPDM on the carport and a skylight as well as a 30-yr Landmark laminated shingle on the house.

Alan showed up 5 minutes before the initial estimate and was very helpful and knowledgeable throughout, without trying to pressure me. Once I decided to bring them in for the work, they were able to push up the date of the work due to flexibility in both schedules and also due to unpredictably good weather. The crew showed up on time and acted very professionally, starting the work right away by placing protective plastic and plywood around shrubs, bushes, trees and flowerbeds. The work proceeded very quickly, and when the crew discovered cracked decking under the existing materials, a call went out to me immediately for approval to replace it. When I showed up on the job site to see the damaged decking, they showed it to me with no fuss. They were able to work through intermittent rain showers and finish in a single day - a week earlier than their initial estimate! Clean up was thorough. Overall, it was a very positive experience.
Description of Work: I had found a leak around one of the vents in my small, 20+ year-old roof, which I had planned on getting re-done anyway. By the end of it all, the team had removed and replaced cracked decking, vent covers, flashing and shingles with a new 30 year roof. All done quickly with a minimum of collateral damage to the yard!

Initial quote was professional and quick. Agreed on a date to do the roof. A Better Roofing left a roll of clear plastic to cover all things in my garage. A team of approx 6 guys showed up at 8 a.m., I briefly spoke to them. They started working through the rain periods in the day (rained off and on most of the day). Finished by 6 pm. Found about 6 nails in my yard and some misc roof pieces. Not pleased about the nails, as I have two dogs that like to eat things. But, I kept an eye out and walked around the yard multiple times to find these 6 nails. A Better Roofing employee came out the following week to ask if I had questions, review what was done and collect payment. He was professional. I accidentally wrote a check and charged $5000, A Better Roofing called me the next day to let me know they did not cash the check, it seemed like an error. Definitely appreciate the fact that they are paying attention. I mailed a check the next day and they discarded the $5000 check. No pictures but, both the garage and the house look fantastic.

The company was very responsive from the beginning. Quick to set up time to inspect roof and take measurements to provide bid. Alan came to do this work and was very professional and efficient and was able to provide a quote in about an hour. We asked for separate bids to just do the garage (since it was leaking) and a bid for the house and garage. Alan was upfront about all the details that the work would include. He outlined areas where costs could potentially increase including whether plywood would need to be replaced under the roofing shingles due to rot and if the skylights that were being replaced had to be custom made. Once we decided to go forward with this company, they were able to set up a scheduled time to start the work very quickly. A dumpster was put in our driveway. The crew wasn't able to start the first day due to the weather but this was expected. The crew worked two long days and I believe did some additional work on the third day. They added the required venting caps which were missing from the old roof to keep up with codes. They were even willing to remove the old antenna that was attached to the chimney (yeah!). The crew were good at cleaning up at the end of the day with the exception of the alley behind our house/garage (old shingles were found here and there). We had been told that during this process that 2 of the 3 skylights being replaced had to be custom made. Once the roof was complete, Michael came with one of the crew members to put in the skylights. He showed me how to operate the larger skylight which we elected to be one that we could open to help with venting. The final cost of the project was less than $200 more than what we initally were told in the bid. Michael did state that he had concerns about the drainage of the water from the flat section of our roof. He indicated that he would send someone out to cut an addtional hole in the overhanging section of that roof so we could attach another drain pipe to help with this issue. To my knowledge, no one has returned to perform this work yet and it has been over a month. Overall, we are VERY pleased with the work that A Better Roofing Company performed and would highly recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Had new roof put on house and detached garage. This consisted of removing off old, single layer of composite shingle roof and then putting on new 30 year composite shingle. Work also included replacing roof on a small flat section that had be done with a different material. Also, had the company remove leaking skylight in garage (and not replace) and replace three skylights on the house.

Very good. Price was competitive, they arrived on time each day (after a rain delay moved the date). They forgot to install one roof jack and when Michael came out for payment and found out he made a call and had guys out there the same day to install it. So, they still get an A. THe new roof looks great and the work seems very good quality. They recommended a great gutter guy that i wound up using too. Great guys to work with.

I found them on Angie’s List. I even got a coupon for the work from Angie’s List. They came out on time; in fact, they came out before time. It was freezing. I even gave them some hot chocolate as it was so cold outside. They did a good job on the roof. I was a little afraid because it was going to be done when it was really cold. However, they were good and I would really recommend them. I was really happy because they were recommended to me by my kids. Then, I searched them on Angie’s List and I even got a coupon for using them. I think I got $100 off on the price. I think I paid around $6,600 on the job. They cleaned up the yard and my garden. They were very careful about my garden and my plants. They cleaned up afterwards, which was the best thing. I had never had a roof put on before, but they were great. I had called a couple of other companies and their price was the best. They were local, too. I am satisfied with the quality of their work. I would use them again in the future if required. I have already recommended them to others.

The job went very well. I had to wait few weeks for the install due to their busy schedule but it was well worth the wait. I liked the salesman, and the crew headed by Mike. I would use them again.
Description of Work: A Better Roofing Co. installed EPDM roofing over my two car garage/shop with a flat roof. They came each time they were scheduled for the estimate, contract signing and installation. They finished the job punctually and did a neat and clean installation with attention to detail. I originally was looking for torch-down roofing but after hearing about the benefits of EPDM, I'm glad that A Better Roofing Co. recommended EPDM and I'm very happy with the work and materials they provided. This is a very good alternative to torch-down: safer with no open flames and a less bulky membrane that can follow contours more closely.

The crew came out on the 6th and went right to work. The crew was unbelievable! They were very hard working, and didn't stand around. The only break I saw them take was lunch. Even when I gave them bottled water, they took it to the roof with them. Before and after, we had it inspected by the inspector from the city of Des Moines, and he took a look at the roof and said, "good job"! Their own inspector was pleased, too. The work was expensive, but worth it in the longrun. I'm sure that we'll enjoy a good roof for a long time and we are so glad for Angie's List and "A BetterRoofing".
Description of Work: The crew came out on the 6th of September and went right to work. They removed the old roof, replaced some rotten boards underneath, put down new plywood and roofing material, and added roof-vents (for the attic underneath). They also replaced the satalitte dish they had to remove and some of the flashing.

He came out and based on our situation he told us going forward who I would actually need to call as I have a town home and they were not able to go that high. He told me what I would need to ask the contractor as far as requesting for what I needed. He suggested I ask the contractor if they do three story houses and what to ask about the shingles and all the different problems that we were having. They were not able to service us beyond coming out and looking and surveying the damage. He was very honest and upfront. He told us that he was not able to do it as he did only traditional roofs. He wrote down all the things that were needed. He actually took time to go up stairs and look at our skylight that was leaking. He went to see what was going on and based on that what he was seeing he wrote down what I would need to ask the contractor going forward. He was a very nice. If we were ever able to use him I would use him again in the future.

The entire process went very well. It was about 6 weeks out before they could replace my roof, but in the meantime, since my old roof was leaking in one area, they came out to do a temporary fix until their scheduled roof replacement date. Everyone I dealt with was very professional. The workers spent about 1.5 days on the roof - they were extremely hard working. I would definitely recommend them to others.

excellent service, communication, and honesty. They worked well with my tenants and neighbors. The work appears to be high quality. There was no BS regarding the price. As you may know, when roofing there is always an unknown as to areas under the roof where they cannot estimate exactly the cost of replace/fix. My extra cost came in around $650, which was great considering how old and dilapidated the roof was. I would definitely recommend and use this co again.

My experience with this roofing company was outstanding, from beginning to end. The estimator, Al, was exceptionally knowledgeable, courteous, considerate, and professional, and gladly answered my multitude of questions. I had earlier obtained estimates from two other well-known roofing companies. Not only was A Better Roofing Company's estimate significantly lower than the estimates from the other companies, but Al was by far the most personable and responsive of the estimators. The actual re-roofing of my house was performed a couple of months later, and was conducted in an efficient, skillful, and highly professional manner. The foreman of the crew told me the work would take 4 days, and that's exactly how long it took. The roofers put in 10-12-hour days and worked very hard. The finished roof looked great, the crew and foreman were very pleasant to deal with, and they cleaned up thoroughly after they finished. I couldn't have been more pleased. Over the past three years my new roof has not leaked or had any problems, and still looks brand new. It's a 50-year roof, so it should last a long time. A Better Roofing Company gets my highest recommendation for anyone contemplating a roof replacement.

They had the lowest estimate of the three we called and they were also recommended by a friend. The estimate was quick and professional. Originally we were scheduled for the 6th of December, but they warned us that with the rain their schedule gets out of whack. In any case, we counted each rain day and we actually expected them to come on the 13th. About a week before they called us up and gave us an updated date of the 10th. About a day before they brought in the dump truck. The next day they worked throughout the day and until noon on the next, just before a big rainstorm hit. We didn't have to leave the house ( although it was noisy ) and while they created a big mess during the process they cleaned up well enough after the first day and after they were done. We had some existing damage to a gutter which got worse during the roofing, but we were planning on replacing the whole thing pretty soon anyways. Super fast, and we are pretty happy with the roof.
Description of Work: Ripped off one layer of shingles on a '41 roof along with two layers of old composite. We have a simple roof, a little steep, because it encompasses a second story, 10-11 squares I believe. They laid down some new plywood and a composite layer in about a day and a half in the middle of December.

Working with this company was comfortable. I got an estimate back in April. It came with a reduction in price if I hired them within 30 days. I wasn't able to hire them so quickly, but even a few months later, I was a given half of the offered discount. I was told the job should take two days. It actually took four. The crew started at different times each day, so it's hard to comment about punctuality. But once the crew was here, they worked steadily through the day. All through the process, the crew worked to protect flower beds and to collect debris so that it could be cleaned up. Clean up was done well. I paid exactly the price that was quoted to me.
Description of Work: There was a tear off of three old layers of roofing and installation of a new roof along with routine related parts such as vents.
We were so impressed by the professionalism of every person we were in contact with...the estimator (friendly, thorough, and fair), the foreman (attentive and knowledgeable), the installers (hard working - quality workmanship), the office receptionist (helpful and personable) and the co-owner (sincerely interested in our 100% satisfaction). We made the mistake of having our house painted just prior to roofing. Kurt MacMillan, co-owner, without hesitation, reimbursed us immediately for our painter to come back and touch up some accidentally damaged paint surfaces. The house looks great with the new roof! We couldn't be more pleased.
Description of Work: Remove existing layers of roofing material, installed felt for vapor barrier, drip edge metal, new plumbing pipe flashings, 6 vents, chimney stepflashing, plywood, 30-yr laminate shingles, hip and ridge caps...gutters, downspouts cleaned, debris removed, thorough cleanup.

Company is very fast and professional, and I felt their price was very fair. The quality of material and workmanship seems to be very good. The only thing that went askew was the building permit. The estimator told us that they normally didn't pull permits for residential reroofs, and that the permit would be my responsibility if I wanted to get one. When I checked with the city, they were shocked to hear this. The contractor is registered with them, and certainly should know that a permit is required. I went ahead and bought the permit. Contractors may come and go, but I have to live with the local building department as long as I own my home. I'd like to avoid souring that relationship. I discussed this issue with the foreman who came by after completion of the job. He felt that the building departments are mostly doing sham inspections (signing off permits with little or no actual inspection) because they have cut their budgets and have fewer inspectors, who are often overworked. I do know from my own experience in another trade that inspectors have been cut. The contractor did have the nailing inspection on the plywood deck overlay done, which is probably the most crucial for me, because of the wind. I actually ended up calling the building inspector for the final. This means that if the inspector had any issues with the installation of the roofing itself (something like overdriven nails in the shingles, a common complaint when pneumatic nailers are used) the contractor was already gone from the site. Compliance with the building code is the responsibility of the contractor, and they should be present for all inspections, in order to get their feedback first-hand from the inspector. Leaving the homeowner to pull a permit if desired is a bad practice. It could cause trouble with the building inspector, and it might also give an opportunity for the property insurance company to deny a claim later. As an owner, I want the extra set of eyes on the job and I want the city at least a little bit on the hook for code compliance. If the city is doing drive-by inspections, there are ways to get that corrected.
Description of Work: Complete reroof of house. Remove old comp roofing, fully overlay existing plywood deck with another layer of 1/2 inch plywood due to high wind area. New laminated composition shingles. New vents, new flashings.
