Stuart Niven advised us regarding these matters. We will be able to keep the Globus hedge (but it may take awhile and some smart pruning to coax them back). In the future we will know not to let the Globus grow to such a size that they can be toppled over like dominoes by a heavy snowfall! Meanwhile, based on Stuart's advice, we have been able to confidently prune our maple trees as needed by ourselves. Doing the pruning ourselves is important to us because a large part of having a yard (for us) is the enjoyment we experience in the lives of our plants. In summary, Stuart provided us with a site map including specific observations and recommendations for us.
Description of Work: We needed sound advice regarding several of our plantings, including special care for our five maple trees and perimeter landscape "Globus" bushing. The winter of 2011-12 seriously injured our Globus hedge, and a disease ravaged one of our maple trees. We needed to decide whether to keep (or remove) the Globus hedge (a BIG decision for us) as well as help deciding how best to prune our maple trees, particularly the one recuperating from a fungal disease.

The consultation with the arborist was useful and informative. The money spent was for that consultation. Their quote for the overall project was considerably higher than competitors and we elected to go with another company. While we ended up not using this company for the removal of the hazard trees, I will definitely consider them for future pruning of other trees within my yard when they become to large for my to managed myself.
Description of Work: The task was to remove a couple of aged alders that posed a threat to several properties and perform major pruning to a third. The entire project was complicated by the fact that the trees were located at the edge of a protected wetland area and sensitivity to the environment was required.

The arborists arrived on time and then further explained the procedures on our trees. They both were very thorough and professional. The clean-up they provided was impeccable as well. Also, the followup provided by Tree Resource was very helpful -- offered free weekly emails to optimize healthy pruning advice. Highly recommend this company without hesitation! Nancy B.
Description of Work: An arborist first came out to survey our two fruit trees, took pictures, and then emailed us the procedures. I then contacted Tree Resource to schedule an appointment suitable to my availability. The staff were very courteous throughout this process. A big limb on our apple tree was rotting and the pear tree needed to be thinned out. There were two arborists, both very knowledgeable, who worked on our trees.

Tree Resource provided excellent service from initial consultation through the actual hands-on pruning, and even followed up with a request for feedback. The employees along the way were all knowledgeable, flexible, skilled, personable and extraordinarily responsive ? truly a pleasure to work with. I wanted to hear their professional opinions about shaping and thinning, and felt confident in what they said. I gained real respect for their business practices, especially from the way they responded to my feedback. Highly recommended.

I really liked the woman who came out & did the estimate but I was very surprised at the price. The men who did the work however didn't do a very good job. They didn't pick up after themselves as well as other people I've used before - I'm still picking up trimmings & the work was done months ago. I was very disappointed & wouldn't use them in the future.
Description of Work: I purchased 2 Big Deals for $99 each for $200 Worth of Tree Resource Credit each. They gave me an estimate that meant the only thing they could do with the deal would be to trim an 8' tall Cyprus hedge. I'd wanted them to trim a tree too but it would've been more.

There were 3 maples in the yard that had been badly pruned and topped leaving stubs all over the trees. First an arborist evaluated the trees to see if they should be removed or not. She convinced me to keep them and have them pruuned correctly. The crew that did the work were highly professional and skilled. They shaped the maples beautifully and removed some dangerous branches on other trees. They also removed a sheared douglas fir that had outgrown it's site. They chipped all the debris along with 4 Xmas treees that were discarded. When they were finished the yard was cleaner than when they arrived and no plantings were harmed or disturbed. They really earned an "A".

Description of Work: After getting an estimate for the work I needed done, I thought it was high. So I got 2 other bids for the same work. One was 4 times less and the other was 6 times less. Thus, I asked Angie's List for my money back on this "Great Deal." The money was quickly refunded.

Response from Tree Resource
We endeavor to price our tree services in a fair and consistent manner that allows us to perform high quality tree care while paying for all of the associated costs of operating a successful business. When writing up a tree work agreement we consider how much plant material will be removed, from where on the tree, the tree’s current health, access to the trees and vehicle access at the job site. Other factors involved in establishing price are costs of taxes, professional insurance, general liability insurance, training and continued education of arborists, vehicle maintenance, vehicle insurance, advertising, taxes, licensing, and more taxes. We have absolutely no control over how much or little a competitor will quote to perform similar tasks.

They came out the next day to do an evaluation. They showed up four days later to perform the work on the tree. They cleaned up my 70' douglass fur tree. They were professional, on time, and curteous. THey cleaned up well when finished. I would actually give them a triple "A" rating. I couldn't have been more pleased. This was a VERY Big Deal.

The crew arrived on time, worked diligently the whole day and kept me apprised of progress. They accomplished more than I thought they would, including removal of a couple of trees that weren't included on the original work list.. My trees look much better, and maybe it's just me, but they seem happier after their trim :-) I have a reminder in my calendar for late 2017 to contact Tree Resource again regarding a potential problem in my tallest fir that your team identified.
Description of Work: 1) Crown clean and inspect top of largest Douglas-fir tree at NE corner of property. GOAL is to remove all dead and/or damaged branches larger than 1 inch in diameter. 2) Crown clean and possible cabling of two stem Douglas-fir South of driveway. Determination of need to cable to be decided by climbing arborist on the day. GOAL is to remove all dead and/or damaged branches larger than 1 inch in diameter. 3) Structural pruning of sweet-gum by corner of garage. GOAL is to reduce co-dominant leader and prune tree to encourage good growth habit for the future. 4) Crown clean, clearance and separation pruning of all other trees (10) along East and South edge of property. GOAL is to remove dead and broken branches; prune trees in relation to their adjacent trees in such a way that each tree has adequate room to grow and there is clearance over sidewalk and road.

I'd like to speak to previous work done. Zeb is a professional arborist who has taken care of my beloved Atlas cedar in the past. After the storm there was alot of damage of course. I went with a bid I got (about 1/2) from a different tree service because I could not afford to pay more. That was the ONLY reason I looked elsewhere. Looking back, I shouldn't have let anyone else touch it. Highly recommend Tree Resource.ar

These guys were professionals right from the very beginning and know their job well. Aside from doing everything they could to please the customer (me), safety was their number one priority and it showed. I watched every branch, top and tree hit the ground and considering the inherent danger of this type of work, I do not believe that the workers could have been any safer or that my property could have been in better hands. Everything came down right were it was supposed to land and I couldn't be happier. By the way, the price was great as well. I know a person that payed nearly $800 more than I did, to have just 2 smaller Douglas firs removed.
Description of Work: They cut down 4 large 100+ year old Douglas fir trees that were in the 90-100 foot range while dodging the house, shop, pump house, shrubs, fruit and ornamental trees. Two of the trees needed to be limbed and topped in order to clear everything.

Thanks to the member for the kind review. Just a quick note, the member purchased two Big Deal coupons for $200 valued at a total of $400 and contracted for services that totaled a little but less than the coupon value. In other words, using the Big Deal coupons resulted in a discount of 27% including taxes.

Pay a consultation fee of $125..... Oh wait, we can do an assessment for only $45..... Forget it.
Description of Work: Just got off the phone with Tree Resource. I have 2 trees that I need cut down ASAP. I was also hoping for an estimate on pruning of my other bushes. I know pretty much what the average price should be as I have had 2 trees cut down last year. Unfortunately the company I have used is in the past in undergoing problems and is unable to do the job. I gave Tree Resource a call because of their high ratings on Angie's List. I was told that I would have to pay a consultation fee of $125. When I pretty much balked at that, I was told an assessment fee of $45 could be made instead. We own three properties in the area and have had a total of 6 trees removed since 2007 (most due to the 2012 ice storm). This is the first time I have ever been asked to pay a fee of any kind. I immediately called another recommended tree service, they offered to come out the next day, No fees involved :)

Response from Tree Resource
The member is very correct in her assessment, we have a long standing practice of charging a consulting fee to look at trees and give our advice, even for removals. How large are the trees? What is the condition of the trees? What site factors are involved in the removal process? What methods will result in the safest and most efficient operation for the job? Would our customer be better served with preservation of the trees? These are just some of the questions that our professional ISA Certified Arborists consider. We do not try to be the cheapest and are not interested in competing based on price alone. We endeavor to charge a fair price for appropriate work. The two different levels of consulting fees are based on a published national standard for tree assessment. (The ANSI A300 part 9) Our Standard Tree Health and Risk Assessment (STRaHA) is used to develop a recommendation on a complete set of data measured for each tree and situation and costs $125. We have a more basic assessment, the Preliminary Visual Assessment (PVA) for $45. It costs less because we can limit our data collection to species identification, health condition, and structural condition. Every person that receives either level of consultation gets our professional and unbiased opinion of their trees/project and a written report, usually used by our clients to enable good decision making. Members who purchase discount promotions through Angie’s List receive their tree evaluation complimentary. It is very important to understand that there is a difference between professional consulting and free estimates. A “free estimate” is a sales call. A consultation is valuable information. Our experience is that paying for good advice will help you to keep your trees healthy and safe and will likely save you money in the long run. It sounds like this member and our company are not a good match at this point, but we would like to let the member know that we are always available for professional advice and safe, efficient tree work if she ever needs help with her trees. A side note, though purely speculative, is that the trees removed at her three properties since last year’s ice storm were very likely salvageable through good pruning practices. Just one more reason to not shy away from paying for good advice.

I have some tall fir trees, one of which was looking a little sickly. It had been about 5 years since the last tree check up, so I had Tree Resource come out. I had bought the all day coupon, so the first visit was a consultation about what I would like to have done. We made a list up, and then they came out and did the work. Most of the trees were in pretty good shape, there were a couple of problem areas that needed to be worked on, and they did that. They also tackled my rhododendrons, which had gotten a bit out of control. At the end of the day, my trees looked better. They did a great job on clean up, even cleaned up a huge branch that had fallen the previous week in a windstorm. As a bonus, I kept the mulch from the clean up, so now I'm ready for the next phase of my yard work.
Description of Work: Examine fir trees for signs of disease, remove branches that are interfering or dead, trim ornamental trees, trim rhododendrons, secure a 2 stemmed fir with cable.

This was the second time in the last several months that Tree Resource worked on my trees: first to prune/thin trees in my back yard, and then to prune branches entangled with power lines in my front yard. In both cases they were very responsive, timely, and professional in the consultation and the work performed. I would highly recommend them.
