I had already checked with several other tree services and scheduled free estimates so I did not use Tree Resource services. It seems odd to me that a company wants to charge me $125.00 before I know anything about them.
Description of Work: I spoke with a very professional lady on the phone about their services. She was very pleasant and empathetic when I told her I was surprised about their $125.00 fee to get an estimate. She said that she understood other companies give free estimates.

Response from Tree Resource
I want to thank the member for recognizing the professionalism we try to offer here at our little company. We are fond of the definition of professionalism as knowing, doing and supporting at a high level the aspects of our industry. To that end we have implemented a policy of paid consulting to begin the process of caring for our customers and their trees. A paid consult allows us to give unbiased opinions as to the best options for tree care regardless of the type or amount of work needed. When another company provides a “free” estimate they are in effect on a sales call. Their business model requires that they sell work in order to pay for the estimator’s time. Therefor the estimator is obligated to sell work in order to keep his job. A free estimate sets the table for potentially bad and unnecessary tree work; bad for trees and bad for customers. We believe that by providing a high-quality, informative evaluation of customer’s trees before they make any decisions for tree work is extremely valuable, and especially so when they end up doing less work to their trees then they initially may have thought or that another service provider was trying to sell them on. We have more written on this topic at our company website in the blog entitled, “How to Get a Good Competitive Bid from a Tree Service.” You can read the blog for yourself and even download a sample evaluation at the following web address: http://treeresource.com/how-to-get-a-good-competitive-bid-from-a-tree-service/

I have read all the advertisements, seen the comercials that 'save with Angie's list'. I immediately responded to the "special" for tree service "a $200.00 value for services for $99.00. All I wanted was some pruning etc. I received a call from the 'tree service', stating that an appointment could be made. There was to be a $175.00 "consultation fee" that would be deducted from my $200.00 savings coupon. So I paid $99.00 to save $25.00. I have found other many other providers that were glad to come out and give an estimate without having to pay them a $175.00 fee. Needless to say I am EXTREMELY dissapointed in your representation of this special. I can not and will not recommend Angie's List or this tree service to anyone .

Response from Tree Resource
There seems to be some miscommunication between us and the member here. I will try to clarify the process of hiring Tree Resource with my response. We charge a consulting fee to begin every relationship with new customers. It is a standard procedure that keeps our initial assessment without bias towards selling work. Currently the standard fee is $125. For this we provide a complete follow-up in writing of our best recommendations for the appropriate care of a customer’s trees. We are very diligent in giving folks a set of job specifications that will be both good for their trees, understandable to the customer, and followable by any competent arborist. I’ve written about this at length on our company website. (You can read the blog at length here: http://treeresource.com/how-to-get-a-good-competitive-bid-from-a-tree-service/) However, when a member purchases a discount coupon from Angie’s List we perform this service complimentarily. We do not add it into the price nor do we give any less than our best effort because of the heavily discounted nature of the Big Deal. We do this because we are true professional arborists. So in effect, members that purchase the Big Deal often get an extra discounted service from us. This was explained in an email to the member from 6/18 where we wrote, “Our normal consultation is $125.00; however this service is included at no charge with your Angie’s List purchase.” Other than that email from us to the member the only other communication we have had is a voice mail we left with the member on 6/19. If the member wishes to redeem his coupon we are still happy to help.

Tree Resource were very good. They did a respectable job. It was a little pricey, but we expected that. They did a good job, so I'm happy with their prices. He's good and professional.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's Big Deal to trimming out a very old cedar tree, thinning it out. It had a lot of branches inside that weren't really necessary. I didn't pay anything extra. I only paid the initial price of the Big Deal.

Michael came out to see what we needed done with a large cedar tree overhanging our deck. We didn't want it removed as it provides afternoon shade but it was encroaching too close to the house. He also took a look at two ornamental cherry trees that needed reshaping and that had a lot of dead branches entwined with new growth. Michael gave us a bid and was able to schedule us in on a cancellation, which was nice since we had to have the work done before our house could be painted. Michael and another arborist arrived promptly and got right to work. He managed to remove the overhanging branches from the cedar while maintaining an attractive shape to the tree. The other arborist got started on the cherry trees. She climbed right up inside the trees to removed all the dead branches and Michael worked on shaping the outside canopy. Thinning the branches allows light to get to the center again. We were delighted to see the two trees looking healthy again! We were happy with the results of the work that was done and would definitely call Tree Resource again. Michael was not only professional and knowledgeable but very friendly and personable too. He was great to work with.

We bought a Big Deal from Angie's List from Tree Resource, in fact we bought 2 because we knew our heavily treed and overgrown property was in need of extensive help. Stuart came out promptly and walked the property with us to investigate what we needed to have done. It was obvious that he was very knowledgable about trees and vegetation, was respectful of the natural setting that we have as he explained many details and offered suggestions along the way. This analysis was "free" because we had purchased the DEAL and it was very valuable to help us to prioritize and understand what could be done now and what might need to wait for another season. Stuart is very personable and easy to work with. He took pictures of the areas along the way and told us that he would provide us a detailed written assessment of what needed to be done and pricing for each item so we could pick what we wanted now and what we might want to do later. Two days later we received an email with the pictures with detailed outline of what it would cost for each item. We were really impressed! We have never had this level of detail when working with a tree specialist....we knew exactly what we wanted to do after reviewing the descriptions. We called for the appointment to the work and were happy that we could be accommodated within our timeframe. We requested Stuart because he had been so helpful in the initial interview and assessment. Stuart and his colleague Mike showed up promptly on the day of service and did a great job with our plants, consulting with us along the way when there was a choice point along the way. They were an excellent team! We are VERY happy with the huge difference in our landscaping due to the expertise of Stu and Mike. They will be our "tree people" from now on.

They were very responsive from initial contact on. Katy, a consultant came out and reviewed all potential work with me and gave me suggestions for what I could do to the yard. The yard hadn't been taken care of in many years and was extremely overgrown. Bushes and trees that had been pruned had just been cut back with no regard for anything but making them smaller. I was also looking at major pruning or removal of a neighbor's western red cedar. Tree resource sent me a written, detailed proposal with a site map and all the bushes/trees circled and labeled. The proposal stated what was trying to be accomplished by each pruning, for example, "structural pruning of two azaleas in front by the sidewalk. Renovation pruning of one Pieris under the front window. The OBJECTIVES are to reduce azalea foliage growing into the sidewalk as much as possible without destroying the original form and to prune the Pieris to remove up to 50 percent of the living foliage to start renovating it's original structure". The price was a bit higher than I could afford for all the work, and when I shared this with Abigail in the office, we discussed a scaled down plan that included pruning just 3 extremely overgrown bushes that had lots of potential. From Katy, the consultant who came out to my house, Abigail in the office, and the two men who actually came out and performed the work, they were excellent. ladder, hand pruners, loppers.

I purchased a $199 coupon toward some tree removal services for my home in Wallingford. It look more than a week for the provider to come out and do an estimate on the service (something they charge for). The estimate stated that my "mountain ash" trees were in good health and needed to be trimmed only. Well, you see I don't have any mountain ash trees. My home has several Sumak's. They had misidentified the species of tree. This was the first clue that they didn't know what they were doing. Second, the estimate stated that the trees were in good health. They weren't. One of the trees had root rot and was leaning dangerously into the driveway so that cars couldn't get in. How on earth does this constitute a tree in good health? Third, the original estimate was around $400-$450 total. When I called the owner of Tree Resource to complain, it took several days and a second phone call before he responded. He objected to the characterization that the trees were not in good health but conceded that they had misidentified the trees. He did, however, agree to take another look--which of course took another couple days. When the revised estimate finally came through, he conceded that all the trees in question had to be removed AND he would charge approximately $550 for this service. I was apoplectic. After all the fuss, he was going to charge me MORE to do the service. It is unbelievable to me both how incompetent and untrustworthy the entire operation was. When I asked for a refund, they refused and referred me back to Angie's List. The bottom line was that I was essentially ripped off for $200 bucks. In the end, I found a service in the neighborhood (Wallingford) who did a same-day estimate and a next-day tree removal for $250-300. It was better to cut my losses than deal with an untrustworthy service provider on Angie's List. My advice for folks buying a service like this is to get independent estimates from other providers before buying coupons on Angie's List. When they say "$199 for $400 Worth of Service", what you quickly find out is that "$400 worth of service" may cost you half that from another provider. The coupon sets you up to make a commitment for a great deal MORE than $400 worth of service when all is said and done. Lesson learned.

Response from Tree Resource
I feel the need to respond to several points the member is making in his review. I will say first however, that indeed, we did drop the ball on this – our apologies to the member. Our arborist did misidentify the tree and we did not communicate effectively enough to understand what the member was asking from us. In response to the refund arrangement and the member feeling that he was ripped off; we did not collect any money from the member. He prepaid (to Angie’s List) for a dollar discount and should have received a refund directly from them. (We’ll be checking into that to make sure that he did.) Members are not committed to utilizing our services when they purchase a Big Deal. We encourage every member to read though our reviews and our Angie’s List profile page. Please also visit our website and give us a call before pre-purchasing a discount coupon to make sure that members and we are the right fit for the job. We try very hard to treat all of our customers and their trees with respect and give them the appropriate care. Sometimes that means that we will tell folks not to cut down their trees if we feel that preservation better serves their interests. Our business does not operate on the basis of trying to be the cheapest tree service in town; we are building a world class tree service. To that end, we employ ISA Certified Arborists. Our company and our individual employees are members of all of the professional industry associations. We have a dedicated office staff that answers the phone from 9 to 5 and returns calls and emails same day. And we diligently work through our work requests to keep our schedule no more than two to three weeks out. If you want the very best care for your trees, don’t be afraid to give us a try.

We purchased a Big Deal through Angie's List for two arborists for the day (6.5 hours). I knew there was a lot to be done and that we could keep two people busy for at least a day. An arborist was sent out to do a site visit and set up a list of priorities for work to be done. Stewart (? I think) spent a good amount of time surveying the property and talking to me about what we would like and what they would recommend. He also said he would request to be one of the arborists who came back to do the work. (Made sense since he had spent so much time already talking to me). We scheduled the work and the office e-mailed me a list of priorities and requested comments. I e-mailed them back with a few changes and then called to ask if there was a plan to reschedule in the event of bad weather (forecast for rain). The two guys who came out worked very hard in pouring rain and I cannot fault them at all. BUT I was surprised the company did not cancel given the SERIOUS rain we were having. Again, the guys themselves worked very hard in spite of the weather, but I am quite sure more could have been finished in the same time frame in good weather. I was also surprised that Stewart wasn't one of the arborists who came out and that there was no mention of this from the company in advance. I had also asked during the initial site visit about whether we could pay an hourly rate to have the guys stay and finish up a few things before they left. I was advised this would be possible, but then when the guys were here they were obviously not willing to do that and wanted to get on the road before rush hour. So about an hour before the ending time they let us know there wasn't time to do any of the additional items on the list so they began tidying up the yard and woodchipping branches. (Appreciated, but we had hoped to do this part ourselves to leave them free for the more serious work we couldn't handle). So all in all it was a good experience and the arborists were skilled and respectful. But for future tree work I would get a bid for the specific work to be done. Comparing the work that was actually finished to previous bids I had received, I don't think the Big Deal was much of a deal.

After purchasing the deal, I received an e-mail from Tree Resource with a contract that they wanted me to sign. Within the e-mail, they advised of an appointment date and that they would book the appointment once they received the contract back. After reviewing the contract, there were clauses within it that said they did not have any responsibility for anything that might go wrong – damage or losses. If anything would go wrong, I would have to prove that they directly intended to do something bad to my property. I have decided not to use them due to this contract.

When they returned 2 weeks later one of the branches on the large Japanese Cherry tree had died, so they removed the branch and trimmed up some of the canopy but not as much work was needed. Before their arrival in the wind storm a large branch fell off an Alder in the buffer area behind our house. Since they didn't have to do as much work on the cherry trees they cut up and removed the Alder branch for us under the original cost of the work. It was greatly appreciated and it was a large branch reaching from the buffer and actually clipping the gutter on the house. We were quite pleased with their work.

There were basic communication issues with the arborist, who after the estimate took a long time returning with a bid. He also never answered my questions about a lower rate if I kept the firewood. Their quote was (3) times the price of another bid I received. The deal was not really what we were looking for. The owner was very reasonable and advised to have the deals refunded. We ending up having the work done through another company. The owner and office staff were pleasant and responsive. My main issues were with the arborist and price.

First off, I had purchased a coupon for $200 worth of service. They came out to look at 3 specific trees that were diseased and noticed 2 others that were dead. I was told how to treat the 3 diseased ones. The consultation was free since I had purchased a coupon. I wanted the 2 dead trees removed and asked about the priced. When I spoke with them over the phone I thought I was told the coupon would cover everything but the $27 tax. I was going to have my husband remove them and use the coupon for the labor on a new tree planting. I was told I could not do that and they sent a statement with the tree removal costs. At that time I realized that my cost for tree removal would be $127 ($300 for removal minus the $200 coupon plus tax). At the time, I wrote to them and stated I would just have my husband remove the trees and decide the coupon was a loss. They then called me and stated they would remove the trees if I just paid the tax. They would send out a crew when they were already in my area so that they would not incur extra travel costs. After that I was playing back old phone messages I had not listened to and one was from Tree Resource where they stated that the cost would be5 $327 minus the coupon. I then informed them of my mistake but they went ahead and removed the trees and I am happy with the job.

I had an estimate done a few months ago after initial purchasing an Angie?s List coupon for services. The arborist?s report/map was clear and thorough based on direction I provided as to which areas of the yard needed trimming. After finally scheduling the work to be done, the two-man crew arrived right on time early Monday morning. We walked both yards together to go over the scope of work and clarify any issues. The guys were quite knowledgeable about all our species of trees. Throughout a steady rain all day they were in full battle gear as they climbed up in the trees to begin trimming, thinning, and shaping. At our common fences they stopped to let the neighbor?s know they would be working on clipping some extending branches. After the bulk of the work was done we walked the yard again to make sure everything had been completed to my expectations in terms of the overall trimming. The most impressive part was the clean up process. All branches were taken to the chipper parked on the street. They raked everything up in our yard and neighbors' and then used a blower to completely clean off the driveway and street area where the chipper was. I was very impressed with the job overall and would absolutely hire and/or recommend them in the future. Note: the services they provide are complete tree services, this is different from trimming your typical yard shrubs or general landscape maintenance. I'm quite active in the yard but knew where to draw the line and hire professionals. The workers wore helmets and had tie-off equipment for climbing up and around the trees and there knowledge of selective trimming, shaping, and restructuring for tree health and growth was quite evident.

Right after getting the coupon - Kathy called me to schedule an appointment with the Arborist! This was SUPER helpful - I am famous for getting coupons and having them expire because I never remember to call in! I really appreciate this. Kathy explained the program to me, answered all my questions and set an appointment. Today, Zeb - the owner arrived at my house as promised. He did a walk around and we discussed the places I needed new trees and the settings - light, soil conditions and my existing trees. Zeb then left for the nursery to select the trees that would fit my site and my needs. He then returned to plant them - checking with me first to make sure I agreed with the placement. He talked to me in detail about the plants that he had selected and how I need to care for them - especially while they are new - in order to keep them healthy and happy. Everyone was VERY helpful and professional. Starting with the call to help me use my coupon, to the careful instructions on how to care for my new trees. I will contact Tree Resource again.
Description of Work: Using an Angie's list coupon - I had three trees selected for my lot and planted in place.
