"Thank you for your business and your review. You have been a great customer and look forward to serving you again."
In the meantime, upon a friend's suggestion, because I was worried about hiring a repair business I had no references for and because I'd had a nightmare experience in the past with a major repair agency, I looked on Angie's List and reviewed ARS. I was a little concerned because there were only two reviews of ARS, both unfavorable. I called a couple other repair shops with A-star ratings, but I didn't have as positive a phone experience as I had had with Laura. And I was displeased to hear that they charge a fee to come out and give an estimate and that fee is fixed and separate from the repair if they do it and they would charge me a separate fee to look at the dryer, and/or I didn't reach a live person or couldn't get a general idea of ballpark cost.
I decided to trust my gut feeling and go with ARS. I felt even better about it the next morning when, bright and early, Joe called me to tell me they would be coming out within a two-hour window that worked for me--between 12:00 and 2:00. He was very nice and reassuring and sounded like he knew what he was talking about, gave me an idea of what it sounded like to him and ballpark cost. Sure enough, at 11:30 Joe called again to say they would be there at noon. He arrived on time with Keith, an employee, and Keith came in to do the repair. He was also very nice and personable, went right to the washer, said he thought it was a switch, examined it, and just as they thought, that's what it was. He had the part in the truck and the repair was done quickly and efficiently. He also looked at the dryer and talked to me about their suspicions of what's wrong with my dryer--that the vent is probably clogged, suggested I look on Angie's List for a person to clean it out, and then DID NOT charge me anything for looking at the dryer. The total cost was exactly what Joe had thought and much less than I was afraid it would be. The washer is running great again, and I am so relieved at the outcome. And with such a great experience, next time one of my appliances breaks, I have the comfort of having what feels like a mom-and-pop, friendly shop to call right away that I know will take care of things and not overcharge me or be difficult to schedule. I cannot recommend ARS enough. They show up when they schedule for, are presentable and nice to work with, fair and reasonable in their charges. I think this is a company that cares about developing long-term relationships with customers, which in my experience is rare today in business.
An update: ARS was correct about my dryer vent. I hired a company from Angie's list to clean it out and the dryer is working great now.

"We always respect feedback to keep our tech'[Member Information Removed] informed on how their experience was. Thank you. Since this was so long ago, we had a crew change and have very good technicians now. We would like to be able to meet your service needs in the future."
"I'm sorry for your negative experience with Appliance Repair Specialists. It's all about who you have working for you and sometimes when it comes to independant contractors you don't get the pick of the litter. We've had issues brought to our attention here in the office with particular technicians in the past and it has resulted in them being let go because of carelessness and/or poor customer relation skills. We will continue to do all we can to provide excellent service now and in the future. I did want to point out one discrepency though, our service charge in 2005 was $55.00 for a diagnosis and estimate, if repairs are done as a result of that appointment, the $55 service fee was applied toward the total bill. Once again, I'm sorry for your negative experience with our company."
