In my opinion I may have. spent $4800 on a faulty Honeywell Thermostat. I contacted West Mechanical after receiving their name through HomeAdvisor. They sent a rep down, who was polite, followed Covid protocols, clean, and very thorough in getting all information for replacing my Air Comfort Systems furnace. He immediately noticed the 1999 install year, then went on taking down plenty of info, taking pictures, measurements for vent return, and checking breaker service. We talked about how furnace was working fine then just shut down, would later restart, then just shut down. He basically stated that itâ s an old unit, time to replace. Average age about 15 years. Provided three estimates. So it seemed I needed a new furnace. So after a little decision, decided on the Trane 80 unit, with a T6 Honeywell thermostat. Before install date, I tried replacing the batteries in the thermostat, the furnace started working fine. So I delayed the install. Then after another day and half., the problem came back. My failure was that I didnâ t recognize that the thermostat being defective at that point. A replacement would have cost under $100. So I rescheduled the install. The office staff was very helpful in trying to get it done even though my original date was now taken. The initial rep offered space heaters. Then the install tech showed up, was by himself, did a great job removing and installing the new unit. He was glad I had taken out the fan unit since it was a heavy unit. He was able to man handle the units, both new and old even though no lift gate on truck. Was able to get the unit up and running. I removed the old thermostat, but then noticed that the contacts had corrosion where the battery compartment was removed. So now I figure out why the furnace could be dropping out, It was being told to by the thermostat loosing connection. The install tech had a little problem trying to connect the wiring back together since it was a four gang box with multiple outlets, so he scheduled a West Electrician to stop by. He was very capable in all other aspects, setting up the thermostat and taking the time and efforts to clean and remove all excess thrash and materials. The electrician showed up the next day, was able to quickly wire in all the outlets and returned the furnace and outlets as required to ensure proper operation. I then noticed that the wrong thermostat was installed, since a few days before install I had decided to go with the initial reps recommendation of a WiFi thermostat so I could monitor it while going on my upcoming trip. Even though ordered ahead of time, the WiFi Lyric Round was not part of the initial install, well it wasnâ t ordered until after initial install. When Lyric installed, it would not connect to WiFi under the Honeywell Lyric app, had to be used under Honeywell Home. So I had no way to verify the new unit was working properly while on two weeks trip. Now it all works great but I am still wondering. Did I replace the hard working, heavy duty looking, was working great furnace with only three cool nights failures over fifteen years because of a faulty, common replaceable thermostat? New Thermostat are not age related. The newer Trane doesnâ t appear to be as heavy duty as the old, but newer technologies could prove just as efficient. Why wasnâ t any repairs offered? Was it replaced because of age of unit? Is so, why is West Mechanical driving trucks around 2005, 2006 models when Van usually are replaced after11.7 years according to US Department of Transportation? Could it be February being a slow month for installs and the Owner told reps they could offer a 10% discount on units installed in February so installers would have jobs? Yes I still recommend West Mechanical, even though I still feel I paid $4800 due to no troubleshooting of possible bad thermostat. Otherwise a great install by Ryan and rest of crew.
Response from West Mechanical, Inc.

"George, My name is Brent DePauw, one of the owners of West Mechanical. I would like to apologize for any confusion with your furnace project. Your original HomeAdvisor lead that came to us was to look at replacement of your existing furnace, that is why we sent out one of our Comfort Advisors to look at replacement options and not one of our repair technicians. At 22 years of age, working or not your best option is replacement if you want to have a reliable heat source. George, I will also give you a follow up phone call to see if there is anything else we can do. As you know 100% satisfaction is our goal."

Make sure you communicate all your concerns to estimator when taking bids. Don't assume that something is included in total job proposal.

I appreciated that the company rep did a wonderful job explaining the workings of a heat pump. His explanation made it easy for me to decide to change to a heat pump from my tried and true (and old) gas wall heater. I appreciate the installers, the electricians, and the followup by the company rep after the installation. Love my quiet warm air! I highly recommend West Mechanical!

From the free bid, to the actual install, I couldn't have asked for a more professional team - including the girls in the office (who were always friendly and kind). This is an A+ operation and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a repair or installation.

They broke the drywall in the ceiling, they leave big messes behind, their customer service is very poor. The new system they put in broke down, and they would not even come out to fix it in the freezing temperatures we are a retired couple in our 70s they told us to use our other furnace. They came out at least a dozen times trying to repair their mess. They didnt seem to care at all how inconvenient they made things for us. In my 50 years in construction I have never had such poor service in my lifetime. I finally had to just pay them off, and I had to get another company to come out and fix the problem they couldnt fix, $50,000 later. I am telling you that they shouldnt even be in business. Even the folks that recommended this company, couldnt believe the Poor Work they performed here.

Our project included the purchase and installation of a new gas furnace together with a new central air conditioning system. The installation team was very professional, on time and and left the place spotless upon completion of the project. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Thank you again for making this project such a pleasant experience!

Timely, knowledgeable, neat. Upgraded from wood stove to ductless heat pump. This unit with MHK1 wireless remote thermostat are exactly what we want to maintain a consistent temperature when we are not there to stoke a stove. I would recommend them.

Our new water heater was installed quickly, and it seems to be working. However, we are still waiting for the rebate form we were promised by the consultant. Also, the water heater itself is less than satisfactory. The temperature varies wildly, so taking a shower is an adventure.

They were very responsive when our furnace went out before the new one could be installed. They loaned us heaters and tried to get the old one to limp on until the new one could be installed. When that didn't work they rearranged their schedule and installed the furnace the next day and came back to do the AC.

Technician was very knowledgeable and helpful diagnosing and explaining the problem. The quote for part replacement and labor to install was quite expensive. I ended up purchasing the part online and installing it myself.
