I had an issue with the auxiliary heat not kicking in on my heat pump. They were very fast to respond to my call, but the technician was pushing me very hard to replace the whole system. The system is 8 years old and has never given us a problem until now. The solution was to replace the wiring running from the inside unit to the outside unit and replace the thermostat. He gave me a price of $150 for the wiring and a staggering $350 to replace a basic digital thermostat. Similar thermostats cost between $25 and $50 at Home Depot. When I questioned him and his supervisor on the cost of the thermostat, they offered a discount to $250. No thanks, I will change the thermostat myself. After I turned down the thermostat, the price for the wiring went up to $173. PS - they tracked mud into my house.

Response from Brennan's Heating & Air Conditioning Inc
We are very sorry that Members are not satisfied with our service; however we are a little confused by their comments. On December 12th, 2011 they called our office to request a service call for “No Heat”. We responded and arrived at their home that afternoon to determine the problem. We found that the wiring from the outside heat pump to the inside air handler needed to be replaced (cost of $173.00) and suspected a bad thermostat (cost of $329.00 to replace a programmable thermostat). The cost to perform both of these repairs was written on the service ticket presented to the customer. We did advise the customer that they may want to consider updating the 9 year old system due to age and condition. Also written on the service ticket. The customer accepted and scheduled to have both of the repairs done on December 16, 2011. When we arrived at the home on December 16th, 2011 to do the repairs, Member questioned the cost of the thermostat. While there are less expensive thermostats located at the local hardware store, they are not the same quality as ones install by a HVAC professional. In addition, our thermostats have a 5 year part warranty and a 1 year labor warranty. Because we were already at the home and as a good faith effort our manager offered to lower the price of the thermostat to $250.00. We even offered to have Member go to his local hardware store and purchase a thermostat and only pay the labor for the installation at a cost of $80.00. All options were declined by the customer. We did complete the wiring repair at the original cost of $173.00. We would like to apologize to the customer for any confusion and for the mud tracked into his home. Our company policy requires all technicians to wear booties when entering a customer’s home and obviously this policy was not followed. We would be glad to reimburse the customer for any cost associated with cleaning up the mud.

Of course we got the obligatory story right away the whole system needed to be replaced, but we were prepared for it. However, when we expressed doubt at replacing the whole system, they were very helpful with suggesting alternatives. We ended up replacing the system because it was going to be more economical the repairing it multiple times. Brennans arrived on time to install the new system, finished in good time and were extremely professional. We would recommend Brennans.
Description of Work: We had Brennan's inspect the furnace that came with the new home we had just purchased. There were obvious problems with the unit and our original plan was to fix it and repair it later. We ended up getting the whole system replaced by Brennans.

Their service was good. I don’t have anything to compare them with. I was able to get a rebate to the taxes. You need to get 95% efficiency rating in order to get that rebate. Overall they did a fine job. Price wise I did get two other estimates and they were all in the same ballpark. The other consideration for going with Brennan was that he had a good arrangement of buying the equipment now and pay later. They even told me that the sale is complete to service the tax rebate as they set me up with one of their finance arrangements.

On every occasion they were prompt, professional, courteous, explained all our options, and did good work. I would call them again if needed and I would recommend them to a friend. Yes it was an expensive summer, but I think their prices were fair. Their service was excellent and I am very, very happy with our new heat pump. It was worth every nickel. We were cool and comfortable during the sweltering summer and I am looking forward to a cozy winter.
Description of Work: We actually called Brennan's on 3 different occasions this past spring and summer. We were very happy with them each time. The first time in May they replaced a heat pump ($9000 minus $1000 rebate). The second time was because the pre-existing wiring for the heat pump inside the house needed to be replaced ($675). After Brennan's gave us the estimate for the wiring I called an electrician (Dave Crigger from DC Electric, also on Angie's list) and talked to him about it. After giving him the details of the proposal he confirmed that it sounded fair and reasonable. The third time was because the downstairs AC unit needed a new capacitor ($375). (The heat pump is upstairs. Downstairs has a separate AC and gas heat).

Gari Darr is the third technician (technicians from three different companies) came to see my AC. My AC was running but did not have cold air in the house. The forth technician from first company validate that his diagnostic is correct. Reason for me to pick the Brennan’s is the price and knowledgeable people.

Outstanding company and service. The unit was installed by two very professional and competent individuals and they took great care in treating my home as if it was theirs. The technician that sold me the unit did not try and push anything on me and gave me all the information I needed to make a sound decision. Last but truly not least, the office staff are a joy to work with and happily answered all questions and concerns!

Overall an excellence experience. I discovered water leaking from my A/C unit and made an appointment for a technician to come out and take a look. I was given a 4 hour window for the technician to arrive; I was called within that timeframe and told that Gari would be my technician and was on his way. Gari was friendly and walked me through the workings of the unit as he diagnosed the problem (clogged drain pipe). He quickly unclogged the pipe. We also discussed my furnace, as it was 23 yr old. He provided a very reasonable estimate. I look forward to doing business with Brennan when I replace my furnace.

We had gone four days without a/c in the extreme heat by the time of Brennan's first visit. Billy arrived within a short time of our call, explained the overall situation (we needed a new system), and replaced the pump so we could turn on the airconditioner. He explained the options for replacement in detail and we made our selection. The cost of that day's service was credited toward our purchase. As a side note, Billy showed us that our hot water heater was leaking (we just had a new heater installed in January). Although another company installed the heater, Billy made a note for the technicians to repair the leak when they came to install the HVAC system. At the time the manufacturer was offering 12 months free financing and a $1,000 rebate. Brennan's handled the entire process of getting our financing approved as well as filing for the rebate. The following week the team arrived early in the morning, installed the new system, showed us how to program the thermostat and explained how to perform regular system maintenance. They also repaired the hot water heater. Everyone we dealt with throughout the repair, purchase and installation process was extremely professional and helpful. Brennan's is truly a dedicated and professional company that we highly recommend.
Description of Work: In the midst of this summer's extreme heat our air conditioner was leaking and had soaked the carpet in our game room. The first company to come said the pump was stuck, shook it, restarted the system and left. When the system leaked again, he said he was too busy to come back and referred us to another company. That company said it was the condenser. The technician cleaned it, but said due to age and condition of the equipment we should consider a new system. When the system stopped again, they were also busy so we looked on Angie's List and found Brennan's. Brennan's responded quickly and explained why the system did in fact need to be replaced. They replaced the pump so we had a/c in the meantime, gave us an estimate (minus the cost of that repair) and installed the new system the following week.

It was embarrassing, but the house cleaners had turned off the switch to the a/c, which was high on the wall. I never stopped to look at it as it is just so high on the wall, why would anyone turn it off. I checked the breaker, but it was fine. I had to pay for a service call, but oh well. I'll look there first. The visit was quite short since there really wasn't anything to repair. The service technician did look around the furnace to check it out and told me what to look for, but unfortunately Brennan's does not service oil furnances, so I have to look elsewhere for service.

This started out as a service call as both 16 year old AC units developed leaks and weren't cooling. Since I had problems with the furnaces the previous winter I asked for a quote to replace both systems. After completing the recharge of the existing units the service man got to work on the quote. He was very patient and explained all the options to me, including available manufacturer rebates and tax credits. We were told there would be two crews, one for the attic unit and one for the basement unit. They arrived very early on the day I requested and got to work immediately. The attic crew arrived first (by about a 1/2 hour) to get a head start to beat the afternoon heat. The good news for that crew was it was a low 80 degree day. The crews were professional, courteous and respectful of the property inside and out. Wore covers over their shoes. Inside covered the entire foyer and up the stairs to the attic entrance. Had to remove trim around attic entrance and replaced it neatly. Had to remove a shrub as the new AC units were larger but dug out a large enough root ball to allow replanting in a different location. Were very careful working around the other shrubs. When they were done everything was cleaned up and hauled away. About 12 days after the install, there was a fault condition on the downstairs thermostat. Brennan was at the house in a couple of hours. Diagnosed the problem as a short in the wire from the furnace to the outside unit (apparently it is customary not to replace these wires as part of the install). Covered as a warranty item. All in all a great experience. Haven't had much use for the furnaces yet, but the AC is fine.
Description of Work: Installed replacement gas furnaces and air conditioners for both upstairs (attic placement) and downstairs units. Price is after manufacturer rebates.

I called Brennan's on 7/28 as my air conditioner was not working. Bill Smith arrived at the house within two hours. He spent a lot of time trying to repair my AC, but the compressor was dead and beyond repair. He gave me an estimate to replace the AC, heater, and thermostat, as all these appliances were long past their life expectancy. The proposal contained three different options (combining different heaters with AC) and the prices for each option. He spent a lot of time explaining the difference between the options and answered all my questions. He also told me there was a $1,000. cash rebate from Carrier, as well as, a tax rebate. I decided to go with the company the next day, and was promptly put on the schedule for the following Tuesday. The technicians that replaced the AC and heater were very knowledgeable and professional. They did the installation in one day, cleaned up after themselves, and hauled away the old equipment. Before leaving they taught me how to program the thermostat. The company registered my warranties for me and submitted all the paperwork for the cash rebate which was extremely helpful. I was given a paper to use for the tax rebate. Everyone from office staff to technicians were outstanding. I highly recommend this company.

I emailed Brennan's stating that my air conditioner was leaking on my basement floor. They called me within 10 minutes and scheduled a service with me between the window of 12:30pm-4:30pm later the same day. I received another call about 1pm to inform me that Dave, the technician was on his way. He arrived approximately 10 minutes later, introduced himself, and started working right away. He quickly identified that the unit had a clogged drain pipe which resolved the leak. He also identified that the unit had a dirty air filter which he showed me how to replace and which size filter to use. Dave checked the outside a/c unit and noticed the nearby dryer vent. When he opened one side of the outdoor unit, we both saw how dirty the inside coils had become, mostly it seemed from the dryer vent lint. Dave spent about an hour doing a thorough chemical cleaning ensuring it was clean as he best as it could be. He advised me to use pvc pipe to vent my dryer further away from the a/c unit. He provided a 10% discount on the repair because I signed up for the bi-annual service agreement. In the end, I think the price was only average, but I am very satisfied with the service and I recommend them. Dave did a great job.

We came home from vacation and found our seventeen year old heat pump no longer cooling, which wasn't a surprise.Within the hour I searched Angie's List for a local HVAC repair company,Brennan's was highly rated so I called and a repairman was there within 2 hours. He made a repair but said he couldn't guarantee the longevity of the unit since it was well over it's expected lifespan.Since I was already aware of the of the tenuous future of the unit I was open to replacement ,Gari ,the very competent and professional serviceman called the office for a range of prices on different units and explained the mfg. and state rebates and federal tax credits available and I signed on the dotted line. The installation took place 4 days later, the was a small manufacturing problem with a noisy fan,but Brennan's had the part from Carrier shipped in overnight and replaced. All in all I highly recommend Brennan's for repair or installation of HVAC products.By the way they only charged for the part on the temporary repair no labor charge.

This company did a great job installing a 16 SEER (infinity air handler with Performance outdoor unit w/ Infinity thermostat) Heat pump with a hydronics coil controller and 10KW electric heat. Will update the review again after 6 months to tell how the system is fairing. Two installers worked all day and did a great job. Nancy at office was very helpful with paperwork and estimates and always available. They come highly recommended from a lot of sources.

My AC stopped working around 4 on a Friday afternoon during the ridiculously hot heat spell (temp reached 103 that day). Called Brennan's and was pleased they could have someone out between 8-12 the next morning. They ended up being there first thing at 8. Mike Anderson was absolutely fantastic. He explained everything that he was doing and what I should do in the future to better maintain. I bought the maintenance contract since I was so impressed with their service. It was $106 for the visit (Sat), $228 for service and parts (capacitor) at the contract price and then the contract itself for $159. Would highly recommend Brennan's. I will definitely continue to use them for any AC and heating problems.
Description of Work: Diagnostic check on a broken AC and found the capacitor was blown and the coils were blocked. Replaced the capacitor and cleaned out the unit. Did a general inspection of the system as well - filters, refrigerant, etc.

During the heat spells we've recently had, the AC was not able to maintain the level of coolness as in years past. I chose Brennan's because of the good ratings on Angie's List, their location to me and the Saturday hours (albeit with a slight weekend surcharge). Mike, the technician, came out as scheduled and was very nice and neat in appearance. I told him my problem and he went to work. I was negligent in having routine maintenance done on my system and the problems he found were 1. A mouse nest in the outdoor unit with a wire partially chewed 2. An thick excess of pollen/dust on the radiator fins 3. Low coolant. Mike cleaned out the nest, washed the pollen/dust from the unit and added 1 lb. coolant. I also scheduled a yearly maintenance contract so they could monitor the coolant level to determine if there may be a leek that needs addressed. A contract will also minimize any long term animal nesting problems and it is just prudent anyway. I was very pleased with the experience.

A major system failure or malfunction is never a pleasant experience but the men and women of Brennan's provided all the options from system choices to financing to timelines in a matter of moments. Each person I spoke with was cordial, informative, and professional. Let there be no mistake, if I ever have HVAC needs in Northern Virginia there is only one place I'm calling...Brennan's!
Description of Work: A distress call from my tenants in Northern VA got the ball rolling. The A/C was not working and the 4th of July holiday weekend was fast approaching. Called Brennan's (I called from my home in Orlando, Florida) as they were one of the highest rated on Angie's List and within a couple of hours they were on scene . Got a very quick diagnosis from David and he gave me several options with which I could decide the best alternative. He suggested a spectrum of options: a modest repair of the existing system (keep it running); a complete overhaul of the HVAC system, a temporary fix for the holiday prior to installing a new 'better system' system; or an upgrade to a new high efficiency, Energy Star, 10-year warranted system. He suggested I call Nancy at the home office for details and advice on how to make any of the aforementioned options work for the long term. She was fantastic -- knowledgeable, personable, and professional. After discussing my option with her I opted for the new, upgraded system and was told that Brennan's professionals would go out to do a rapid repair for my tenants' comfort and that the new system would be installed the next business day along with a new humidifier (gratis). From my initial contact with Kelly, my discussions with David on-site to finishing the deal with Nancy it was a display of down-home, courteous, and professional demeanor that will bring me back to Brennan's for years to come! Thanks to all!

They explained everything very well. They took the time to measure my ductwork to make sure it was the right size AND a reasonable rate. We got quotes from other companies, and Brennan's was accurate and less expensive. They came one day and installed the systems. Everything was done well. It is working great now! We had never had a consistently working heating and air system until we hired Brennan's to come out. They also are a distributer, so they had certified technicians and some discounts on parts.

We knew the furnace was bad and needed to be replaced. We were hoping to do the work over the summer and get a good deal. We didn't get around to it because my husband was in an accident and was hospitalized. Naturally, that night the a/c started making a funny noise. The next morning it stopped working all together. This was Memorial Day of course. I needed to get back to the hospital but the weather was brutal and the kids were home with my sister. I called a bunch of services from the list, but Brennan's was the first to call back. They got someone out to me right away. He told me the system was pretty much shot, but meanwhile he got the old one running a little while longer to tide me over. He wrote up a proposal and walked me through it. Ordinarily I would have gotten a second opinion and at least one more estimate but I didn't this time. I didn't because when I looked up the system they were recommending it checked out well and Brennan's offered me the Angie's List discount as well as a military discount that made the price very good. We will also be getting some cash back from Carrier which brings the total price down another $1000. While I was doing some research, Brennan's came back with a window unit for the downstairs which helped us power through the worst of the hot weather. On the day of the install they called before they showed up, covered the floors and stairs and went right to work. They got the old unit out and the new one in. They demonstrated the new thermostat controls, cleaned up and left. They left my basement the cleanest it's been in years. That night when I got in from the hospital the whole house was cool and pleasant. I can't get over how quiet everything is! I used to think we had loose ductwork somewhere because of the awful rattle in the walls when the fan came on. There was only one glitch -they put something square shaped down on my front lawn and left it there for a while I guess, because the next day there was a dead patch of grass there. All in all, though I couldn't be happier. It was a terrible time for the air to go out, but Brennan's did everything in their power to help me out and they were very nice about doing it. I plan to arrange for them to become our regular seasonal checkup firm.
Description of Work: Came to repair air conditioning, got it up and running through the hot spell, and ended up replacing our old furnace and air with a brand new system and thermostat.

I think they’re very professional. They give priority to those who have a contract with them for regular maintenance, but they make that clear up front. They’re good at explaining things. They are not the cheapest, but they are reliable and I have had no trouble with their work. They seem to maintain their staff; many have been there for awhile. They are very qualified. The techs have been certified for different areas that they deal with and the patches on their sleeves indicate the level at which they are trained.

Beginning on Friday, 05/27/2011, I had contacted two other HVAC companies and neither had gotten back to me before I called Brennan's on the afternoon of 06/01/2011 for a dead AC unit, part of a 20+ year old furnace. The fan worked but there was no coolness coming out. First off, I was delighted to actually be able to talk to someone about my problem. The earliest appointment available was on Monday morning, 06/06/2011, between 10 and 2. I suspect that there was quite a backlog from the very hot Memorial Day weekend. I received a courtesy call from Brennan's at 11:35 today to let me know that their technician, Mark Dawson, was on his way. Mark arrived shortly after 12:00 and immediately donned shoe covers to protect my carpet and got right to diagnosing the problem. It didn't take long for him to locate a burned out compressor and repair it. He followed through with testing out the entire system and didn't find anything else going wrong at this time. He did warn me that I should budget for a replacement system sometime in the next year and plan to replace the floor in the furnace closet at the same time. He completed his work by shortly after 1:00. I was delighted with the professionalism, speed, and thoroughness of Mark. I will definitely be calling Brennan's for service in the future.

The Brennen tech gave me a informal special price that I checked with others who said it was good, said he would call back with a formal quote but I never heard from them again. I would have been nice for him to check the freon level and offer to try recharge but he wanted to up sell. Had another guy out and he said it was not much of a leak because I was only down less then a pound of coolent. He gave us a recharge 120.00 and we have been good since. He thought it should last the summer but also said that a replacement might be needed in 12 to 24 months.
Description of Work: Tech showed up at the end of the day for a service call on the AC. Took one look at the coil on top and said I can see the problem from here, you need a new coil I see oil stains on the piping. Then he took out his freon detector and it made a beeping sound at which point he said would recommend replaceing the entire unit (11 years old)
