We are having him back to do more interior work. He honored the big deal price and more importantly we have had no leaks in 14 months. He gives a good assessment and he tells you what his pricing is for you and he sticks to it. He is on time and he cleans up. He is a good contractor.

It went very well. It was a good experience. They were on time and they did very good work. They worked with me. They probably had to do a little more but they did it for the same price with the original contract once they got into it. So that was good. I didn't go with cheaper ones. I looked at some other folks and I just liked what they said better. They were very professional.

Everything went well.  The gentleman who came out was very knowledgeable and experienced, he showed on time, and he did a thorough inspection.  Furthermore, we appreciated that they back-dated their estimate for completing the issues that he found since we need some time to prepare the basement for all of the work.

Well we have had 2 major rains come through since Lou's crew installed the interior drainage system, and the front corner floor of our basement where the water usually came in was dry.  We are very happy with the results thus far.  There was a very small amount of water that appeared to seep on the floor against the wall at the other end of our basement, but we will follow up with Lou on that.  That was when we got 3-4 inches of rain over night, a few weeks back, so I am hoping it is a one time thing.

Service went as expected with a thorough review, feedback/guidance, and a timely response for a budgetary quote related to one item that was discovered. All communications were prompt, as was arrival on day of service.

Lou was extremely professional and punctual.   He is very knowledgeable; you can tell he has a lot of experience in the business.  He explained everything clearly to us, and gave us insights into the strong areas of the home foundation, as well as likely problem areas.   We asked him for a quote to do more follow on work, but it was more expensive than we were anticipating, so at this time we are not pursuing it

I bought this as a Big Deal, so I rated the price comparable to other structural inspections I looked up and their regular price is comparable.
After buying the deal they were proactive to let me know that I could go ahead and schedule, then when I called to schedule they were able to get me in within a one week time frame.
The inspector, Lou, had finished the previous inspection early and called to see if I could meet with him earlier, so punctuality was not an issue.  I definitely appreciated that.  I have had some companies that can arrive early, which I don't mind if I am home, but sometimes they don't call ahead, they just show up early, so I liked that he called and waited for a return call.
There were several things that taken all together worried me about the home's structural integrity and as we went around Lou was very knowledgeable about home construction including what happens to materials over time and made sure to explain why each of the issues would normally occur.
I understood wood shrinkage (one reason why kiln dried wood is much preferable in building anything needing to stay "true" over time and that wood used in construction to day is inferior to wood used 10 years ago.  So to me, taken independently, no single issue was problematic, it was that the majority had appeared in the last 6-8 months and the house was built in 1968, so why suddenly had these happened?
Lou made sure to go look at each of the items I had concerns about.  In places where I had investigated for potential water damage and found it not to be so, he was able to look at it before I said that we found no water damage, and state that it was not water damage and what the cause was, then show me why it was occurring.  Lou has a forceful personality and I might have liked him to wait until seeing all the issues before deciding there was no structural issue, however, he was teaching me more along the way.  Since I do a lot of my own repairs etc., it was nice to know that none of the concerns were beyond my abilities, as long as I am able to take my time to do it right.  I've learned from getting an old home in a swank historic district ready for sale (and the Realtor and a finicky builder friend's positive reviews) that I can do the work to a standard I am proud of, when I don't have a tight deadline, but I am learning as I go which takes time, so the additional tips from Lou were really appreciated!
Lou knows what he is doing and did not talk down to me at any point, he also did not try to sell me on services that his, or any other, company performs.  I had planned on having this inspection done, then paying for another competitor at full price, but I now feel that getting another one would be wasteful, Lou answered all the concerns.  Normally I would expect a written report, and may still get one (the inspection was just a few hours ago), but since there were no major finds I understand if there isn't one.  I will probably request a boilerplate "home is structurally sound" report to keep in my home records for when we decide to sell or rent out.
Now I can get back to completing the stairwell improvement and everything else!  Yea!

Well, I think that the price of replacing a sump pump turned out to be very high and the company was a bit odd. They called me at 5 AM the day before they were scheduled to do the inspection to try to do it earlier than scheduled. I had a meeting at work and could not change the time agreed to previously. A similar event happened on the day before the pump replacement. It was just a little strange. The pump was installed by a very good technician who tested it for me. It is a good pump overall and I wont have to worry about it for a long time.

Response from Apex Waterproofing
"Apex Waterproofing strives to keep a timely schedule and we like to inform our customers when the opportunity arises where the inspection or the project can be done earlier than previously scheduled. We respect the comments from all members but in this situation it was a smaller project that cost $750 and could be done earlier than previously mentioned. In no way did we mean to inconvenience the customer when inquiring about the time possibilities."

That one was not as good. I don't think that the person who came out to evaluate our property gave me anything customized to our home. I think he just recycled the same quote and information that he gave to everyone. They went out not too long after I purchased the deal. Essentially, I have later on realized that I had bought that deal and paid for something that lots of other contractors will provide for free. My house doesn't even have a basement. I had other contractors give me much more useful information rather than just a recycled quote. That was a lesson learned. I didn't need what that gentleman was selling. I didn't need to trench down to the bottom of my house and put my house with waterproofing. There are a lot more factors involved in the water infiltration into my house. Water coming from the ground was not one of them. His responsiveness is fine.

Instead of doing as asked, the contractor in front of the prospective buyer decided to comment on the state of the roof and what in his opinion was needed to fix it, although he was not qualified to offer such a comment. He also made comments about how the deck was "not to code" - although the home inspector had been happy with both the roof and the deck. After this he gave me a very high quote for a complete french drain around the entire basement and 2 downstairs bedrooms. I had the problem fixed with another reputable company - Mid Atlantic Waterproofing of VA for 1/3 of the price quoted by Apex, and it came with a 7 year guarantee.
Response from Apex Waterproofing
"On January 9, 2014 the Angie’s List member purchased a Bid Deal inspection. Upon arriving at the location of the inspection there was an apparent potential buyer of the home. After doing the interior inspection which included moisture reading of the lower foundation wall and the visible black stain/potential mold growth, it was determined in my professional opinion that a full perimeter system was necessary. I explained to the member and potential buyer, by doing just a partial system will only lead to future problems down the road. The quote was a good price with a very generous Angie’s List Discount and in fact would have come with a double-life warranty with the water management system. As a Class A builder/contractor Apex Waterproofing has vast knowledge with all phases of home construction. When an Angie’s List Member purchases a Big Deal coupon we do a very thorough inspection from top to bottom making sure any possible water infiltration. With that said, as a professional contractor, when I do an inspection and I see an obvious defect I feel obligated to inform the homeowner or any potential buyer. Apex certainly did not intend to cause a situation between a member and a potential buyer, nor was the potential buyer invited to the inspection by Apex."

Lou came to our home on time as we scheduled to help us figure out how water was getting in to our basement. His assessment was thorough, well explained and made sense.

Lou Peyton was the fourth person to provide an estimate on a vertical basement crack in my foundation.  In front of my foundation is a large cement slab where the front door/stoop is located.  I was concerned through other estimates that the repair would involve major work and be very costly because a concrete slab would have to be removed to repair the crack from the outside.   Although this was discussed as an option and the best approach, Lou provided a proposal within a day or so and it was the one proposal that made the most sense to me.  I felt very confident that his company was the best one to do the job because I was not dealing with a salesman who was trying to provide a pitch as to why their company's method is the best.   Rather, Lou is a person who stands behind his work because he has first-hand knowledge of how to conduct these types of repairs.  He is very confident in his work, follows-up promptly and takes the time to answer any questions or concerns.  And he is a very busy guy!
After negotiating a price, Lou is and his crew arrived prior to the 8:00 a.m. start time and set up the area to ensure everything would be kept clean.   I had to leave for work, but my wife complemented on how professional and polite the crew was.  When I returned home, I looked at the area and it was spotless.   Only time will tell as to how effective the treatment is, but I'm confident that this was the best approach under the circumstances.  He also provided a good warranty for peace of mind.
In the end, I think it's worthwhile to take your time to consider the proposals and trust your instincts as to who you are most comfortable with for the work.   And that's why I chose Apex.

Had a water problem in our town home basement - water coming in at foundation/block seam. APEX came in and properly diagnosed and resolved the condition. Now with proper grade, drainage, repairs to block wall, the basement looks as good as new (new drywall and paint helps).

Lou is awesome.

I had purchased the Big Deal offer for this service.  He looked and said that water leakage was not so bad and then he went on to say what he would do to correct it; it would cost me $5000.  So I was not prepared to pay that though he said that there isn’t much moisture in the wall but I was not prepared to pay that amount for looking around.  It was not a major crisis with it.  He was very prompt and I think he knew what he was doing.  He said that it was not a big problem and I was not prepared to pay $5000 unless there was a critical problem.

I would have appreciated a little bit more communication regarding our responsibilities (moving furniture, etc.) prior to the start of work.  Overall, Apex did a great job & I would absolutely recommend them to someone looking for basement waterproofing.
