This first meeting with Joe Harris occurred between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16, 2012 as I signed paperwork with Tom on Oct. 16 and began my search for a town home. To my shock I had been approved for a $150,000. loan. After 4 months of searching, in Feb. 2013 I found my town home and it was under the approved loan amount ($135,000.) and I was ecstatic. Began more paperwork on Feb. 20 with Tom and Feb. 28 with Joe. Contract was to be re-written on March 8 as property had not been on the market long enough. Closing date was to be March 20. Then the nightmare began. Home inspection was completed on March 1. While waiting for appraisal to be completed, I began taking paperwork over to Old Virginia Mortgage, in the beginning maybe once or twice but during the last two weeks of this horror story, I was going everyday and sometimes twice a day. When I would ask "why didn't you ask me for this sooner", Joe's answer was ALWAYS "how did I know they were going to need this". I started to feel very uncomfortable about the way the process was being handled. I would be tag teamed by Joe and his sidekick Doug Bills ( Business Internet Manager) on their speaker phone. I felt somewhat bullied with "well, we have to have this right now". I had another meeting with Doug on Sat. 3-16 and while sitting in the office I noticed I was still on the chart for closing on 3-20. I knew at this point we were still waiting for the appraisal to be completed as repairs had not yet been done on the town home but Doug assured me we were still closing on that date. I called my agent when I came home who then called Joe on Monday to find out if the appraisal had been completed and were we closing on the 20th? Well, no surprise, the appraisal was not done yet - Joe blamed the appraisal company for being busy - so the closing was postponed to March 26.
Description of Work: This was a copy of a complaint filed with FHA and VHDA.This concerns a nightmare story that I need to tell so that no one ever has to go through what Old Virginia Mortgage, Virginia Beach, Va put me through. In Oct. 2012 my rent was going up again and in talking with my daughter (who used to handle real estate closings), she suggested that I talk with a real estate agent that she knew well. I have a financial history of bankruptcy/foreclosure from Michigan in April 2008 and had no reserve cash, so I really didn't think I could be a home owner again. Tom White from William E. Wood & Associates was now my agent. He indicated that there was a FHA/VHDA loan that I may qualify for. The VHDA loan would basically be a second mortgage that would pay for the down payment. I was excited!! At this point I met with a loan officer from Town Bank who collected initial paperwork (tax forms, bank statements, income info. etc.) but also asked for the bankruptcy/foreclosure papers. As I was unable to locate them, I contacted my attorney in Michigan and asked him to send paperwork - he just needed a money order for $30.00 for copies. Enveloped addressed and stamped - just needed to pick up a money order when Joe Harris from Old Virginia Mortgage came into my life.. Joe Harris had apparently seen me looking at town homes on the internet and sent me an e-mail on Oct. 12, 2012. After a couple of short e-mails back and forth (I already had Chuck from Town Bank) he sent "I will beat Town Bank's rate and offer a free appraisal". "I can really save you a lot of money". Well I was sucked in. But I really needed to save all the money I could, so I met with Joe Harris along with my agent, Tom White. I handed over the paperwork Tom had received back from Chuck and it was given to Joe. I also told Joe I was in the process of getting my bankruptcy/foreclosure paperwork from my attorney in Michigan. Joe asked when the bankruptcy/foreclosure occurred and then stated since it was 5 years old, he wouldn't need that paperwork. OK - so I just saved another $30.00, called my attorney and indicated to him that apparently the paperwork was not needed.
