"We believe in being upfront with potential customers...your job was such a small repair we recommended that you consider a handyman type service/company, perhaps a Class B or Class C contractor. We say that because Class A Contractors are generally "restoration" companies and for us to send our crew and equipment out there isn't cost effective for either the homeowner or us. A small handyman working out of his/her home could do the small repair for less and we were trying to save you money. Please keep us in mind for other projects such as roofs, siding, trim, windows, or a full gutter job. Thank you"

"We appreciate your feedback, it is important to us. Constructive criticism can be a vital tool for a company to improve, of which we are always striving to do! There are instances, however, when a company needs to plant its feet to the ground and defend itself against unfair criticism. We respectfully disagree with the notion that we were "wasting" the homeowner's time by doing our "pitch". We, in fact, take great pride in EDUCATING all homeowners to enable them to make a sound, informed decision. We seriously doubt consumers walk into a car dealership and simply buy a vehicle just because of its color! Rather, all of the vehicle's features, i.e. gas mileage, navigational system, cruise control, etc., play a part in the value and cost of the vehicle, as well as the warranty, craftsmanship, make of vehicle, and dealership reputation. Well, roofing is very similar. There are, quite frankly, generic shingles out there that are absolutely no comparison in quality to what we offer with our Golden Pledge Master Elite Roofing Systems. Often times, it is companies that are run out of their home or a P.O. Box (or no other professional business office) that offers generic and/or even "irregular" shingles and of course, offer them at a lesser price. The problem is, more times than not, homeowners that choose to go this route will often experience problems because of poor craftsmanship and/or defective materials. And, to go further, many times when these type contractors do roofs, they promise warranties that are not thru the manufacturer and then go out of business or change their name to void the warranty. We have numerous examples of homeowners that tried to go "cheap" with a non-certified or non-Master Elite roofer only to get frustrated to the point where just a couple of years into the life of the roof they decide to rip it off and hire a reputable Master Elite Roofing Company to "get the job done right". The problem is, now they've paid twice!! We believe in doing the job correct the first time. We offer Golden Pledge and Systems Plus Warranties that are true lifetime warranties. We have third party inspectors that examine the roof after completion to make sure all the specs of the roof have been reached. We offer top of the line shingles and accessories. Simply put, only 3% of all Roofing Contractors in the nation earn "MASTER ELITE" status, and we are proud to say we have worked extremely hard to build our foundation as a top roofer in Hampton Roads. One final note, we are not the lowest price in town, nor are we trying to be. Because you can't have top notch quality for the lowest price. We are also NOT the highest price in town, either. We generally fall in the middle, but continually strive to BE THE BEST "VALUE" COMPARED TO PRICE. We also have a price match guarantee, but it requires homeowners to compare apples to apples. We have not had to issue one check in over 5 years for this guarantee, because the fact is a lesser price is a company cutting corners on quality, install, warranty, or all of the above! The old adage proves to be true in that "If it's too good to be true, then IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE". In roofing, you get what you pay for and choosing price without factoring quality is almost always a recipe for years of problems, leaks, drywall damage, mold, mildew, etc. rather than getting it done right the first time and in the end paying less (with a lot less headaches, too!). "Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it. The concerns you pointed out were addressed, please be assured. We would like to point out, however, that when issues arose, we took care of them in a prompt manner. Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather and even despite checking the radar numerous times throughout the day, rain and thunderstorms do pop up quickly in this region. Had it not been for the storms, the roof would have been finished in one day. Please be assured that we do not RUSH just to finish a job and sacrifice quality. We believe in taking the time necessary to ensure a quality job every time but sometimes unfortunate situations occur such as in this case where the thunderstorms developed quickly and caused delays. We made sure the roof was totally sealed and no weather damage occurred, the trailer was removed before the storms hit, the screen was repaired promptly, and we completed the job in its entirety as soon as weather permitted. We are always on call and our showroom/offices are open Monday thru Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m."

That being said, the estimate that is "too good to be true... Is simply too good to be true! Homeowners often find that out the hard way by realizing that contractor either was not qualified to install that job, The quality of Products is inferior, and the warranties are not backed up by reputable manufacturers. Greatly disappointed, homeowners then hire a reputable contractor with excellent credentials and products and and up paying much more than if they would have gotten the job done correctly in the first place. In this case, after careful review of accurate details, this customer's windows were installed 39 days from the day the contract became official after the mandatory three day right of rescission. The windows were installed November 9th and customer made final payment on November 13, 2013. We have the deposit slip to prove our details. So, we take it as a compliment that customers want their products installed ASAP and the anticipation can make the wait seem longer than what it really is! Put another way, excellent restaurants usually have a wait time, especially during prime time hours. "Not so good" restaurants will not only have no wait time, but most tables will be empty as well! Here at Custom Home Improvements, we believe in excellent products, service, install, and warranties. The unfortunate reality though is, like excellent restaurants, sometimes there is a backup. With the tax credit rebates that were coming to an end on December 31, 2013, our window orders more than tripled! Still, a 39 day turnaround is more than reasonable. Plus we appreciate that this customer was very satisfied with our windows and install. Thank you again for your input, it is very valuable to us!"

"We take all reviews to heart and investigate all situations, especially when they don't add up. To this homeowner, we ask, "When you have a warranty or service issue with either of the two other bids you got, where are you going to meet the owner, in their KITCHEN, in their BATHROOM, or in their DRIVEWAY??? We called the homeowner and are very grateful for her candor. She shared with us the other companies that gave her quotes. Both companies she compared us to RUN THEIR BUSINESSES OUT OF THEIR HOUSE AND HAVE NO OFFICE! Conversely, we have offices at 2000 General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach as well as a large showroom with our product displays. We also have an office in Newport News for our Peninsula clients and BOTH OFFICES/SHOWROOM are on COMMERCIAL OFFICE PROPERTY for BUSINESS, not a "Residential Neighborhood"! Next, we are a GAF "Master Elite" contractor, of which the other two bids this homeowner got are NOT. There is a huge difference in the quality of install, quality of products, and VALID WARRANTIES between "Master Elite" and non-Master Elite (or just certified) contractors. The price we quoted this homeowner was on a GAF "Golden-Pledge" roof, which is the top of the line roofing system, products, and warranty that GAF offers! Golden-Pledge Roofs MAY ONLY BE OFFERED BY MASTER ELITE CONTRACTORS so there is NO WAY POSSIBLE the quotes are comparing apples to apples. Third, MASTER ELITE contractors who offer Golden-Pledge Roofing Systems get a third party inspector from GAF to do a complete inspection of the entire roof to ensure all products and install have been perfected according to specifications. Non Master Elite contractors have no such inspection and validation. To sum up, a consumer can't get a Mercedes-Benz for Kia pricing. They also can't get a Tempur-Pedic bed for an "econo" mattress price. So is it wrong for Mercedes-Benz or Tempur-Pedic to be higher in price? The best way to answer that is "You get what you pay for" and home improvement is no different. The other two contractors are offering scaled down basic roofs with lesser warranties and no 3rd party manufacturer inspection. And most of all, they run their business out of their home which could really put consumers at a DISADVANTAGE should ANY ISSUES ARISE! We stand behind our products, quality install, and top notch warranties. We truly feel it is better to get it done right the first time rather than cut corners and end up paying twice. We have many clients who tried to go "cheap" with home improvements and cut corners, only to become frustrated to the point of starting over and costing more! We also offer a price match guarantee when comparing "apples to apples" in terms of company credentials, product quality, install craftsmanship, and the best warranties in the industry. We hope our response helps consumers make intelligent decisions and gives feedback on what to look for in choosing a home improvement contractor....It is SO MUCH MORE than just price and price alone!"
