We checked NFCU web site for mortgage rates and read the detail terms and conditions, so we decided to use them for my son's first mortgage application. Web site did NOT indicate rate based on downpayment. We got pre-approval, rates were provided, knowing that we will be putting 20% down. We got a contract for a condo. We submitted ratified contract to get the loan processed. 1st shock was that the rates on web site are for people with 30% downpayment, so our rate went up; the 2nd shock was that we have to pay 0.75% to 1.5% more points for the loan (in addition to the origination and discount points), depending on the condo questionnaire they need from the condo association! You think with the honor of being a Navy Credit Union, they wouldn't to such tactics to get you to apply for loan. I am going somewhere else! I am very disturbed by such loan practice. I would not advise anyone to apply thru NFCU. I am in the process of using them to sell one of my properties, I am going to cancel it! I don't trust them!

I've been with them since 1973 and they are extremely attentive and they have a lot of services. They have not only banking but investment credit cards, rebate programs, loans and my car loan is with them. They have very competitive rates with everybody else. So it's really good one stop shopping for us for matters financial.
Description of Work: Navy Federal Credit Union is who we do all of our banking with.

I have refinanced four times in the last 30 years (2 different homes), and my closing costs were around $2,500. When I called for an explanation, I was told each 1/8 of a point cost $1,000, so two points costs me $16,000 and 4.5%. I'm at 6.2%, so why would I refinance for a higher rate? The other charge that astounded me was their processing cost--over $3,000. Interesting to note--It was no problem canceling the application; no arguments!
Description of Work: I was looking to refinance. I filled out the forms on-line and received a quote the next day. There were approximately $20,000 inclosing costs

I have been a member for 52 years; my mother enrolled me when I was a baby and she worked for the department of the Navy. I like their services because they have been there when I need them. They give me honest opinions and appraisals and I do my brokerage through them. I also use their credit cards and they are great for active duty navy, which I was. I have referred people from other branches of the military to this credit union. They are the only credit union that I have ever belonged to and I prefer credit unions to banks because I am an owner, a shareholder. When I have a problem my the listen to my opinions. They are very low on fees and they don't have a lot of other things that banks charge fees for. Someone got hold of my card while I was overseas and tried to use it but the credit union would not even honor the charges made. They called me in order to save my account. I have never had a bad experience when I have visited this credit union.

I have been using them for as long as I can remember. I like that they are at multiple places, and have reasonable credit card offers. They don't charge anything for the accounts.

I like their customer service and that is the most important thing to me. I also like the credits that they offer. They offer more credits than other credit unions. I bank with them so I use them all the time.

See above. Althouth the staff at the local branch are very nice they have no idea how their computer systems even works.
Description of Work: Applied for a mortgage loan and equity line on December 19, 2011. I knew my ratios would be high but I asked for the largest equity line possible. February 4 I received an approval from a paper pushing processor. Wow they approved the amount requested. I'm self employed and was again asked for my 1099s from the paper pusher. Again I told her I'm self employed no one sends me 1099s. She then asked what about your W-2s. Again I'm self employed and no one sends me W-2s either. She responds I guess we will need to go by your P&L and your last two years of tax returns which we have had for a month in a half. Now I have no confidence my loan is really approved. I ask "has the underwriter approved my loan" . She says yes we just need to have our tax return expert review your tax returns. We need to bill you for $400. for you appraisal. I say no way. Have your expert review my tax returns then I will authorize the appraisal. Three weeks later the paper pusher calls and says the tax return expert says you indicated you own a home on Rosehaven Drive also. You failed to disclose this home to us. I respond that the home was sold last year. Tax returns also indicate the property was sold. I ask if she would like a settlement statement for proof. She say no that's OK. I send her the settlement statement showing proof of sale anyway. 2 weeks later I receive a denial of credit. Insufficient income. I was asking for a $300k equity line. No phone no email no letter asking to reduce the equity or even offering a lower amount. The staff in the mortgage and equity line dept. are totally ignorant to W2 1099 and self employed borrows. Tax return expert was no expert. Were my ratios high? Sure, I knew that but they could have had some communication. $700 wasted. Non-refundable application fee. The best part is the paper pusher was pushing for the appraisal because my loan lock was going to expire in 10 day. 60 days to process an equity line in this market is ridiculous. I was about to lose my lock because they could not process the loan fast enough.... Update March 10, 2012...Paper pusher says first trust was approved. I asked why was I sent a denial letter then. Paper pusher had no explanation. So I ask what loan amount can I get approved for on an equity line. Paper pusher responded with "zero'. We will not allow you to count your income on the sale of real real estate. I explain to her that I have been buying and selling real estate for 10 years. It is my business. No explanation from paper pusher. Asked to talk to her supervisor or the underwriter to explain the source of my income. Paper pusher says they do not allow any contact with her supervisor or the underwriter. Stay to tuned. I will continue to push this ignorant bank.

They have held our mortgage for the last 30 years. We have used them because of the great rates and the way they service our mortgage. They have never sold our mortgage in the last 30 years. Prior to that anybody that held our mortgage would sell it every couple of months. We would highly recommend them. Most of our family and friends have accounts with them.

This would not be the place to go for a first time mortgage or perhaps even a first refinance. It was very hard to understand the process before hand. They simply want you to fill out all the information and then they will tell you what to do. Comparing potential other mortage services is difficult and it is hard to determine decision points. We had some faith in NFCU as long time customers and experience with previous mortgages and refinancing. That got us through long periods of no information/call back. Although NFCU has an online application process, we did not use it. The terms of agreement appeared to commit us to its use without giving us flexibility on the use of documents. In other words, it read to me like we had ot use it completely or not at all. Mortgage services is an area sadly lacking in consumer information. It was not a pleasant experience but we paid a reasonable amount for a good rate and paid only a few minor fees.
Description of Work: Refinanced our mortgage with NFCU. They were the prime on the existing mortgage. All of the upfront paperwork was slow and confusing. The woman on the phone was non-native English speaker and hard to understand. Being an existing customer didn't seem an advantage. We were charged 3/4 point for the service which was low. Home appraisal was thorough and fortunately agreed with our own lowered evaluation of the property. Title & escrow service was superior and funds have moved as predicted. Our new rate of 4.625% was not the lowest but close.

I chose NFCU as my bank after having a bad experience w/ Bank of America about 2 years ago. There's a branch very close to my home. Most of them know me by name and greet me every time I'm there. They're very helpful - opening CDs for my children, getting checks delivered to the branch (for safety) and, most recently, waiving a charge on a stop payment on a lost check because the check amount was smaller than the stop payment fee. My online bill-paying and account access is equally exceptional. The format is very user-friendly and allows me to check my data before I submit it and add notes to each bill. It also allows me to receive my bills online and setup reminders when they're due. I am completely satisfied with NFCU as my daily banker. I don't pay a monthly account fee since my husband is active duty military.

I like Navy Federal. I wouldn't get into markets anywhere else. They are a credit union. They are not out to make a profit. I don't feel like I am being charged on a ton of fees. I don't think they make you get a loan you can't really afford.

I love them. I have had an account with them since I was 10 years old. I bought my first condo in 2004 and now this new town house is financed through them. They have good rates, good customer service and they referred me to an excellent Realtor. I don't have to worry about them selling my loan to somebody else.
Description of Work: I bought a 900 square foot, 3 bedroom and 1 bath town house financing it through them.
