I think emails will speak for themselves!!!! Please read the following:

Heather Chapel yesterday Looking to add 2 rooms and a deck. Will be going thru bank on a renovation loan. Member suggested dates to schedule service: Morning (AM) on 11/10/2015 Morning (AM) on 11/13/2015 Morning (AM) on 11/16/2015 Mike Fusco Builder yesterday Hi, Will not be available any of those days. Please contact me at 919.901.2399 to see if there is anything I can do for you. There are things we need to discuss first. This process is way more complicated. I may also have to charge for the bid. Have a great day! Mike Mike Fusco Builder 21 hours ago Hi Heather, I was very busy when I typed the email earlier. I will need to talk with you before I proceed further. I also would like to know if you have plans and specifications drawn up? If not we will need plans and specifications. This is not a free service and is a lot of work. I need to see where your budget is at also. There are reasons for this. I do not work up bids for everyone that calls me. 98% of the people will waste my time. I do not have time for that. Hope you understand. I am interested but have to prescreen potential clients. Too many individuals waste my time. Have a great evening! Mike Fusco Heather Chapel 21 hours ago Thanks for your response. I completely understand about people wasting time. I have had 4 different people come and we go over everything with them and then we never hear back from them. We started this process back the first part of August. We want to begin renovation in the next 2-3 weeks. I doubt this will be possible since the lack of work ethic that the ones around here have. No we have no plans or drawings. We are just needing an estimate of what the cost might be. I would be happy to send you pics of what the house looks like and what we are wanting. I don't mean to sound ugly but I will not pay for an estimate. If had done so I would be out of a lot of money. We are going thru Wells Fargo with a renovation loan. If this isn't something that you are interested in I understand. Mike Fusco Builder 20 hours ago Hi Heather, I will need plans for my sub contractors and for myself to construct the project. Let's talk on the phone. Bidding projects properly is not that simple. You can talk with past and current clients. There is no way to start any project in 3 weeks. More like 3 months and winter will mess up pouring footers. This will require a phone conversation first. This way I can get you to grasp the process. A architect nis going to charge you $150.00 a hour to draw plans. I do not cost that much. There is a lot to cover. A phone conversation is a must first. I can give you a ball park number rather quickly that is why we need to talk email will not cover what needs to be discussed before a possible visit. I am very busy and it will be months before any construction begins. Call me at 919.901.2399 or send me your number Mike Fusco Builder 20 hours ago You also may not have realistic expectations on the costs to construct a project properly. It can take 2 to 3 weeks to get a building permit. Mike Fusco Builder 18 hours ago If you do not want to talk on the phone I do not have time I am very busy. Heather Chapel 1 hour ago I want to thank you for your time. I don't think you and I will work well together. I don't know if you are so busy that you don't take to the time to read your emails completely but you really need to start. There are several things that I have stated that you have obviously misconstrued. Im not a stupid women by any means. I am a nurse and as far as the construction business I have a aunt that builds 1-3 million dollar homes. She retired last year and has helped me know what my cost should be and the process involved. Im not expecting a job to start in 2-3 weeks. If you had taken the time to read the email you would have seen that I said I started this in Aug and was hoping to start it around Dec. As far as the "I don't have time!" "Im busy!" comment. You got it!! You don't have to worry about this job. You are very rude! I will be reporting you to Angie List and leaving feedback. Mike Fusco Builder 1 hour ago Ms. Chapel, I did read your emails. I do not appreciate your approach. I do not care about your aunt. I have been in this business 36 years. I am that busy and no we can not work together. I read your emails and the other contractors have not returned a bid. I do not have time right now. That is being honest. Wanting to start in 3 weeks is not realistic. Good luck in your search for a contractor I could not break ground on your project for at least 4 months. As far as the multi million dollar homes many times they are the worst people to work with. I will write a reply. I charge for bids and drawing plans. You are out of line. Have a Good Day! Mike Fusco Mike Fusco Builder 54 minutes ago I do not have time and am too busy for the time frames you want to meet with me. You are rude. My current clients waited for 8 months for me to start and I do not job hop. If your aunt knows so much then she should know you will need a set of plans and specifications to bid this properly. If you need a designer hire a architect if you will not pay me for my time. 2-3 weeks is harassment of me on your part. I am out over a month just to meet with you. On a addition you are looking at starting price of roughly $140.00 a sq ft and the price goes up from there. Decks I am at $35 a sq ft and up from there. You can put $200 a sq ft or more in a house or addition not hard to do. I can understand why the other contractors have not contacted you. The problem is you not everyone else. I offered to talk with you to explain things on the phone and you refused, obviously. Again I have a process to this for good reason. You are out of line. I am not your slave. Have a Good Day!

Response from Mike Fusco Builder

"Hi to all, closer to I could not get past Ms. [member name removed] attitude. As I let her know once I was tired of her attitude I need to talk on the phone first. Yes I am actually that busy right now. When I said a month to meet with her possibly that is the truth, I am that far out with meeting with people. I do not have time to waste. I will prescreen you as a potential client. This is a two way street. 1.) To see if you can afford the project you are wanting to construct. 2.) If I need to draw plans I charge for this service it is not free. 3.) If you do not want to pay me hire an architect. 4.) Be realistic when contacting a contractor. 5.) I do not have time to waste with frivolous people thus pre screening. 6.) I am a quality contractor and not here to build for everyone out here. 7.) Do not send me a email and say here are the times I have available. Better be ready to talk on the phone. 8.) I do not want everyone for a client some people are best to not work for. 9.) See we both agree we do not want to work together that is great! If you are cheap seeking low bidder or anything like that do not contact me. Sincere clients with the money that can afford my professionalism only. I am very good at what I do, but it will not be for a deal where I lose money. I will not be taken advantage of. Contact me and be prepared to talk on the phone, You will see if we can work together or not. I have had to become this way because too many people wasted my time. Do you work for free? Watch property brothers and get the reality house [member name removed]. That simple. I do not and will not work for people like you. Been in this business too long to put up with a client like you. Four contractors never came back with bids according to you. Take a hint. Good luck in your search for a contractor. 4 were not interested guess I am number 5. Be kind to whoever you hire [member name removed] might find out they are really good people heart and soul. You kicked a good person in the teeth here. You lost a chance to have a good honest contractor."

There were quite a few glitches getting the work scheduled. Mike was very apologetic about this. My schedule was not critical, so I could deal with it. But some people might not be happy about that. That is the reason for the B on punctuality.
Overall, the quality of work was good to excellent. Mike is especially good at carpentry and wood repair, but he did well on all of the jobs. Mike is very easy to get along with and very professional. He provided suggestions and advice on the most economic solutions to the various issues. He advised me when it would be better to use a different contractor e.g. an Angie's List painter for a day deal was more economical than having Mike do the painting. And he advised me when he was not the right man for the job, such as repairing the under counter sink. He pointed out some additional work that I might need to consider in the future. He was very concerned about the safety of the hammock for my son. He seems very genuine.
Response from Mike Fusco Builder

"Thank You [member name removed], I am very busy. It is not time to staff up yet so scheduling is rough right now, plus the winter weather. I know I have a lot of irons in the fire. I understand the B and thank you for your patience. Between winter weather and other projects I was stretched very thin(lots of people calling and trying to get their projects completed. Small projects can be rough on scheduling especially when weather keeps messing things up). Hopefully if the economy continues to recover I may be able to hire employees to handle more projects. I was also busy trying to get things lined up for building an addition onto a house. Thank you very much Ian and I enjoyed working with you and knowing you as a person. I do understand the B. I am just swamped with work. Doing the best I can. This is why I am now letting people know I am a few months out of scheduling work at this time. Also AM and PM time frames. Thank you again for your patience [member name removed] the hammock anchoring system was a lot of research to find. Had to scratch me head on that one. Never installed a hammock indoors before. Thank You [member name removed], hope all goes well for you!"

This experience was not good.  Mike was originally supposed to do the work starting at 11 AM on January 30th.  I took a vacation day to accommodate this schedule and moved furniture in preparation of the work.  At 10:30 AM on the day he was supposed to be here he called to tell me he couldn't make it because he had car trouble.  I understand that these things happen so I agreed to reschedule.  We communicated via e-mail early the following week and agreed that he would be here at 10 AM on Saturday, February 7th.  At 9:30 AM he called me to let me know he was on his way.  When I asked him what time he would get here he seemed "put out" by that question but replied "a little after 10".  My reply was "okay, but since we agreed upon 10 AM I would appreciate you getting here as close to 10 as possible".  This was evidently not the thing to say because Mike got very upset and starting to raise his voice at me.  He then told me that he still needed to stop and get the lead test kit.  Knowing that he was 45 minutes away and then still had to stop to pick up supplies, it became evident to me that he was going to be more than a little late.  5 or 10 minutes, while not professional, is acceptable.  30 minutes is not acceptable.  In an effort to understand why he needed the lead test kit (we had talked about this in a previous conversation), I questioned him on it.  Again, the solid wood beams were bare when I painted them with latex paint 5 years ago so I know for a fact there's no lead in those beams OR the room in general.  At that point Mike yelled at me and told me that he is sick and tired of people "like me" telling him how to do his job.  He then told me that I could contact Angie's List for a refund and then he hung up on me.  He called back about a minute later and continued to yell about "people like me" and how sick and tired he is of being told how to do his job.  He went on a rant about how it's the law to test for lead paint and that he can be fined if he doesn't comply.  That's all well and good, I didn't care that he was insisting on testing the beams but I did take exception to the fact that he was going to be even later because he needed to stop and get the test kit.  If it was so important for him to test the beams, it's my opinion that he should have had the test on hand and been here and ready to do his job at 10 AM.  In an e-mail he later wrote to me he said he didn't show up today because I asked him to break federal and state laws.  That is not true.  He then told me that I was abusive and militaristic and that construction schedules should be flexible and that I don't know anything about construction and that I needed to adjust my attitude.  He accused me of yelling at him which again is not true.  I in fact had to request that he stop yelling at me.  Perhaps Mike was just having a bad day but when I hire a "professional" I expect them to be professional.  I expect people to be punctual and polite, not late and inappropriate.  I fully expect Mike to dispute everything I have just said because based on the contents of the e-mail he sent me, he feels he did nothing wrong.  Long story short, I paid for a service that I scheduled twice and Mike didn't show up.  My opinion of him as a professional is exceptionally low.  I would not recommend this person to anyone.  What should have been an easy 2 hour job turned into way too many phone calls, e-mails and stories about broken down trucks and how he wishes he could afford a new one.  Rather than just apologize for being late, Mike made up reasons as to why I was a bad client.  He showed no personal accountability at all.
Response from Mike Fusco Builder

"1.) I had my truck tuned up on Thursday, before I was supposed to go see [member name removed] on Friday. As I started out on Friday to see her, I was on the interstate my engine started missing horribly. I called [member name removed] and told her my truck was not running right. I told her I could come there after they fix the truck. She was very abrasive and belligerent and said I have no time for you to come here later today my time is important. I took a vacation day and so on and she rambled. I have other things to do today you can not come here later today. So she had her vacation day packed. She was abrasive and not understanding at all. Rambling on about her time. I was going to go see her later on the same day but she was busy with other things she had planned on her vacation day. I went to the Ford Dealership two times because of cracked spark plugs before the problem was corrected. [Member name removed] was too busy to see me the next day on Saturday. So I set a appointment for the next Saturday. 2.) I was going to see her on Saturday morning. I called her at about 9:25 AM to tell her I was on my way. I told her I would be there about 10:05 or 10:10 roughly. She became abrasive. I was already driving on the road when I called her. Then I told her I would have to test the beam for lead based paint. She then became extremely abrasive protesting and told me I did not have to test the beam and went on and on saying I did not need to test it. I legally have to test that beam whether she wants me to or not. I asked her, so you are telling me how to do my job now. At this point I was done and hung up the phone. I turned my truck around and headed home. I called her back after I calmed down and she was worse than ever. I told her to go ahead and write a bad review if she felt she needed to do so. 3.) I never told her I had to go to Lowes. I keep lead test kits in my office and the test kit was on the front seat of my truck and so was my digital camera for documentation. I also had a copy of the Joint EPA – HUD Curriculum Lead safety book manual issued by the government for the certified class I took just in case she had any questions. She did not want me to test the beam which is a violation of the State and Federal laws. The law requires I test painted surfaces in a house built before 1978. She may not realize this but she, can be fined as a homeowner $35,000.00 for violating this law. It is a $70,000.00 fine for me. Angieslist had a article on lead based paint safety, I suggest everyone read. What if it took more than two hours to remove the beam? What if I found lead. She would have flipped at that price! That would have been over a thousand of dollars from me. If I found lead based paint I would have referred her to a lead removal contractor. Many service businesses will only give you AM or PM service calls; I am also very busy with other clients and have a lot going on. I will only give general times for showing up from this day forward. Especially from this day forward. I do call if I am delayed and when I am in route to the job. I always call in advance. I am a very busy, one person can only do so much. At this point on small projects, I will not be working on pre 1978 homes. On larger projects we will have to discuss any projects in detail. Good Luck in your search to find a contractor that you are happy with. Sometimes two people can not work together."

Mike's work was exceptional. He took the time to answer all of my questions (and there were a lot) and did everything I asked of him with not a single word of complaining. He took a tremendous amount of pride in his work which is what I appreciate most. I found both him and his work to be beyond exceptional. He will be my first phone call if ever I need help again!!!!

Very wishy washy on the phone and was talking about all the future services he could do before he even started work.  His estimates on cost and time were high for the work stated then when he got in took less time.  He was convinced that garbage disposals were illegal in wake county.  (there was a law passed 6 years ago then it was overturned within a few weeks). At the end he wanted to tack on additional cost for his gas cost for driving.

Overall Mike did an excellent job.  He preformed quality work to a number of repairs needed for our house that we had just moved.  His experience in construction gave him the skills necessary to preform a number of different tasks.  I would recommend him to anyone.

Went exactly as committed to. Very high quality work, no short cuts. Kept good control of project and any sub-contractors used. Always showed considerable concern on doing the job right.
Came up with own excellent ideas on how best to use the space available and closet, arched entry, and stairs came out beyond expectations. If you want someone to trust and know that the job is going to be done right, I'll go to this contractor all the time.

I worked for the largest municipal housing agency in the country in New York City for 13 years. Within this agency, I had the privilege of working with some of the most sophisticated for-profit and not-for-profit developers that built and renovated homes and apartment buildings in New York City. Mike Fusco's work ethic and knowledge of construction surpassed them all. Mike genuinely cares about the quality of the finished product as well as his customers. He was accessible by email and cell phone everyday including weekends. My calls were not ignored. If I left a voice-mail, my calls were promptly returned. My experience with Mike was so pleasant that he became a close friend of my family.

Although it has been 5 years since the house has been built I continue to request his services. He knows the house and the lay of my land better than I do. I could not have asked for a more knowledgeable builder that is a man of integrity, has a strong worth ethic, is honest, reasonable and provides excellent customer service. Anyone that retains the services of Mike Fusco will realize that he is a rare find and that person will not be disappointed with the end product.
