The result is a very beautiful exterior, well worth the price paid and any inconvenience experienced or noise. The quality of the work is excellent and very professional. Every day I admire the James Hardie siding and the quality workmanship. It will not require any painting, and I will be enjoying it for many years to come. So glad this one is checked off the list. Thanks to Shiner Roofing for the outstanding job.
As above - they did 3 separate projects in 2014. The second and third after they did a very good job replacing the roofing on our house - at a price that I felt was quite reasonable.
I scheduled an appointment to have a Shiner rep come to my house to provide an estimate for window replacement. Shiner called twice the day prior to confirm but when they weren't able to reach me personally they cancelled the appointment via voicemail on the second message.
I spoke with a Shiner rep the morning of the appointment to ask why they cancelled and was told it was because they couldn't talk to me to confirm. The rep was pleasant enough, no issues there, she did a fine job. However, the issue here is that their cancellation policy was never articulated upfront.
There is a significant difference between stated policy - "you can expect us to call you 24-48 hours ahead" and what the policy is in practice, which is - if we don't speak with you the day prior we will unilaterally cancel. Had they told me this, I would have made a point to call them myself to confirm vice understanding the policy is simply a reminder call the day ahead.
There are other ways they could have accomplished their confirmation such as calling 2-3 days out and letting me know they would cancel if they didn't talk to me, or easiest of all, communicate the policy upfront so there is no confusion and subsequent inconvenience to the customer. Most other companies I have dealt with operate this way.
While Shiner's estimate was about 10 to 15% higher than the other 4
Angie's List A+ rated candidates, Shiner's quote was complete that it
included items and work not covered in any of the others. That is,.
There were no ?extras? or surprises. Shiner was very liberal in their
performing of extra work over and above the contract and simply did not
charge us for items that were identified as potential extra cost items
by the others. However, when an extra cost structural item did surface,
Shiner was extremely generous with a charges that could have only been
their cost. I'm certain that our overall cost would have greatly
exceeded any of the other estimates we received from the other
contractors, and in all likelihood, would have greatly exceeded the
final bill we received from Shiner.
Other Angies' A+ listed Contractors:
We solicited and interviewed four other Angie's A+ listed roofing
contractors . While all other four contractors were professional, polite and appeared
reasonably versed and competent on the topic of roofs, none of the
others identified the roof ventilation deficiencies or certain other
architectural nuances and intricacies with our roof. Shiner was able to
identify and discuss in sufficient technical detail ? performance
aspects, vulnerabilities as well as some history of our roof ? while,
none of the others could explain.
Because we fully expected surprises in the structure, items that could
not have possibly be predicted without a full tear down and inspection,
Shiner was the only candidate that I had any confidence in that would be
able to address and resolve whatever they came across with effective
professional execution.
We selected Shiner and we were not disappointed.
Their performance was as follows:
They carried out the work with military precision. The crews are briefed
on issues beforehand in the morning at their office and operate
effectively like a Swiss watch with all materials and tools on-hand.
The personnel are long-time Shiner employees and all are very proud of
their work and appear happy in their work. None are ?pick-up? employees.
They all speak well of their employer. I met and got to know all the
crew members. Each one was a skilled craftsman, with many being
foreman-class quality. I couldn't discern a novice among them. Moreover,
I was impressed by their ability to execute the work with the most
minimum of talk - They knew their job, they knew what the next guy was
supposed to do, and they did this many times before.
The crews Came Early and Left Late ? that is, in the morning, the crew
cars would quietly park alongside the home entrance where they would
have their coffee and prepare for the day. Often, they would show up and
coalesce at least one half hour before commencement of work. They
wouldn't leave for the day until they reached a solid stopping point,
waterproof and protect any exposed roof, tools and materials stowed and
covered, debris cleaned, and the site restored to 100%. In our case of
having many dogs, the crews were very mindful of keeping the gates
closed, and additionally, all crew members were dog friendly.
Quality:
The quality is A1++. Its been about 4 months now since Shiner
came and left, and we are so pleased we selected them. Our roof is a
show-piece and will outlast us.
"Thank you for posting. We love hearing member's comments, and will be passing on your review to the crew foreman and his manager. Enjoy your new roof!"
"The employee in question was here in our office in a Sales Meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. meeting with several managers and had several interactions with owners and officers of the company. The employee did not have any odor of alcohol at any time in meetings at our offices. The employee has been with the company for many years and has never had complaints of this nature. The employee in question does tend to wear strong cologne on a normal basis, and this may have been what the homeowner detected. Immediately after his meeting, he drove straight to the Homeowner’s for his 1:00 p.m. appointment. We strongly regret that the homeowner would make such a strong accusation that has no merit whatsoever. As for the Homeowner’s concerns of the estimate given, we show that there are 5 areas in need extensive repairs. The proposal given was a fair estimate given the extent of the repairs. Our mission is to determine and implement the right construction solution for every customer and we are sorry that the subscriber felt the estimate was too high. We wish them luck with their home improvement project. We do apologize that this Homeowner was not satisfied with our Salesman, but we do value the reviews we receive, and hope that by reading them, you will find that the customers we have serviced over the years have had many far more positive experiences than negative."
During the initial visit I was led to believe that my landscaping would be covered to protect plants and bushes. This was not the case. When I arrived home from work at 3:30 pm (they started at 9:00 am) nothing was covered and the roofers were throwing stuff off of the roof - landing where ever. There was even debris in the tree on the front side of the townhouse.
But what really has caused me to rate this vendor so low is the additional cost of $140 for "replacement of 2 sheets of plywood". What I take exception to is the fact that this was not discussed with me in advance, but simply placed on my bill. At a minimum someone should have called me in advance of my receiving the bill to tell me there would be an additional charge and the reason for the charge. And really, they couldn't eat the cost of $140 dollars out of what I expect to be a large profit margin on roofing?
Since it's a replacement roof I really can't address the issue of quality beyond how my plants were treated. Only time and lots of heavy rain storms will give me an indication of what their work quality is really like.
09/16/14 - Update: It seems I wrote my review too soon. Before contacting the company about the additional charges I took a look at the front and back of my roof. The workers had removed the external dome attic fan! I sent an email to Meghan Bowers on 09/05 asking about the charges and the missing fan. Within 5 minutes I got what seemed to be a standard reply - there was rotting wood that needed to be replaced and the attic fan isn't needed with a ridge vent. I replied that this wasn't consistent with what Dave Wahrendorff and I discussed. He told me that removal of the fan would cost extra due to labor and the plywood needed to cover the hole. I clearly told him to leave the fan in place. My contract did not specify its removal. Meghan said that Andrew Renaux or Dave Wahrendorff would get back to me the that following Monday the 8th. I never received a call or email from anyone. Today on 09/16 Tiffany from accounting called me about the payment. So much for customer service. After receiving her voice message I sent an e-mail to Meghan, Andrew and Dave telling them that I was about to settle payment and would be updating my Angies's List review. In less than 5 minutes I received an e-mail from both Andrew and Dave. Dave's e-mail basically stated that he had talked to Andrew and thought Andrew was handling it. Andrew's e-mail contained an offer to remove $70 from my bill. I declined his offer and made it clear we were pass the point of any goodwill gestures on their part. Neither one of the email messages included an explanation of why my attic fan was removed, an apology for that, why I wasn't notified in advance of the additional charges, or an apology for not getting back to me on this issue. The action I received on this issue today was clearly prompted by my mention of a review on Angie's List.
Shiner - in the person of Bill McGarvey - spent an hour going on the roof, providing us with instant photographic evidence of what work was to be done. He provided a very detailed price estimate, and worked with us on scheduling (we had to deal with our HOA given that we were changing the shingle style...)
The crew showed up on Monday at 8AM. By noon, they had the entire roof (main house, garage and screened porch) stripped, rotted wood replaced, and weatherproofing down. At about 3:00, the rain started. When I returned home at 5:30, the crew (led by foreman Isaii and field supervisor Andy) was still at work putting tarps on the unfinished roof surfaces and cleaning up the grounds.
They got washed out on Tuesday but Wednesday they returned, and when I stopped by the house at noon, they were finished and almost completely packed up. A day and a half of labor - not surprising given the crew size (at least six, maybe seven men) and the teamwork they exhibited. Every man seemed to know exactly what he was supposed to do, and when.
The gutter crew showed up on Thursday and were every bit as efficient as the roofing team.
Shiner's team excelled. We've already recommended them to two friends who need roof work.
Talk about the wrong way to try and win new business! I will never do business with this company in the future nor will I recommend them to anyone in my neighborhood!
Update: 8/18/2014
My response to Shiner Roofing's response on my review. I am posting the email sent from Sophia Jones and Shiner Roofing in order to show that their constant harassment had nothing to do with reviewing a site visit or to do a quality survey. It was nothing but using all my contact information to sell me unsolicited services. All the e-mails were exactly the same. No mention of a survey or asking me to inform them how the site visit went.

"We make a lot of effort to make and review site visits as well as answer our potential customer’s inquiries. We also like to do a quality survey to see if there is any need for improvement. If we contacted you too much, we certainly apologize. We just want to make sure that we have met your expectations and that we meet your timetable for getting the job done. We have reviewed this incident with our staff as well to make certain their messages and emails are more concise, explaining in better detail our reason for contacting."
"We strive to make accurate ranges of how long a roof will last in order to save customers money when they can repair instead of replace. While we cannot predict the life of every roof and whether or not another leak may occur from circumstances we have no control over, our consultants are instructed to give ranges instead of exact numbers of years. We make an educated predicted range of 1-5 years or 2-5 years. In this specific case, we actually reduced the price of the roof repair because our technician was able to re-use some apron flashing without replacing it. Also of note was that t the actual roof repair was $1,035 and was an insurance claim with USAA. The rest of the work was a siding repair completely unrelated to the roof repair. The new leak that this customer is experiencing is in a completely different area than the previous roof repair. Even though we feel that a one year warranty is completely reasonable on a roof repair, we would be happy to work with the customer on a solution. It would still require the visit of a consultant. The customer was not open to this at the time but we are happy to revisit if given the opportunity."
They were very professional from beginning to end and excellent value for investment. The job site was meticulous/clean, the work crew worked fast, but expertly, and were very friendly. And they knew the work to be performed and did it well.
Impressed by the pricing and attention to detail.
Would use them without hesitation the next time I need roofing, siding and gutter work done. They are one of the few companies out there that understand copper gutters and slate roofs and seem dedicated to quality.
Scheduling is very efficient and organized/professional.
Use them and you won't be disappointed.
Starting with the request for an estimate on the new roof. The office staff was
efficient and set up the appointment to meet our schedule. The estimator
arrived on time. He was polite and professional. We liked the fact that the
estimator actually went up into our attic to look for water damage before
giving us the final estimate. He answered all of our questions and discussed
the materials they planned to use. When it came time to schedule the work the
office staff kept us posted about dates and changes due to rain. We found this
very helpful. The crew that came to do the work arrived on time. They were very
respectful of our property and they cleaned everything up when they were done.
This is the second time we have used Shiner Roofing for a
home repair. The work was well done both times. We highly recommend them.
"Thank you for the review of our staff and work. We are always happy to hear from repeat happy customers. We'll be sure to pass on your kind words to our staff."
While the crew I had was very proficient in putting on the siding, they were pretty careless in treating the fixtures attached to my house. On the first day, they burst a water pipe under the kitchen sink which was feeding the water faucet on the wall outside. This happened because they were pulling the faucet way out from the wall, in order to place some backing behind it. In doing so, the water pipe under the sink was pulled along with the faucet and this caused it to rupture. A plumber had to be called to fix the situation and while he was there the crew was still pulling on the faucet and he had to shout at them to cut it out!
On the second day, the crew somehow managed to cut a wire leading from the outside heat pump/ac to the air handler in the attic which knocked out the A/C for several days. Also on the second day, someone pulled the Verizon cable on a wall right out of its connection inside the wall, which led to our WiFi upstairs. Thus no internet for several days.
These incidents were not caused by any "vibration" which we had been informed about. I would advise any Angie's List member who decides to use Shiner in the future to make sure and have a close conversation with the crew chief concerning protection of fixtures that lead into the house.
"Thank you for your comments. If the issues are still outstanding, please contact our office directly, so that we can help you get things rectified. We will work with all our crews, hoping to prevent another customer experiencing the same inconveniences that you experienced."
