John Nugent & Sons is Northern Virginia's Air Conditioning, Heating, Plumbing and Electrical Experts. Since 1975, we have been providing residential and commercial services that have helped people reduce their utility costs and increase their home or businesses temperature, plumbing, and electrical efficiency. Whether you need maintenance, repair or replacement, we want to be your heating and cooling service provider in McLean, Arlington, Falls Church, Vienna, Great Falls, Sterling, Ashburn, Reston, Herndon, Chantilly, Centreville, Fairfax, Dulles or anywhere in the surrounding areas. Additional phone number - (703) 291-1926.
I contacted John Nugent & Sons approximately 3 weeks in advance of the service date to schedule my annual gas furnace and whole house humidifier inspection, activation, and filter replacements. Greg, the Nugent technican arrived within the scheduled time frame. I very much appreciated the phone call from the company about 30 minutes prior to his arrival to confirm the appointment. Greg inspected the unit and replaced the filters as needed. The whole house humidifier can be temperamental, but Greg persisted and was successful regulating the water flow and filter function. I was interested in purchasing an annual service contract for the furnace and A/C, so the $199 includes an A/C inspection and service in the spring. I was very pleased with the service provided by John Nugent & Sons and recommend them for any residential HVAC needs.
Description of Work: Annual gas furnace and whole house humidifier inspection and filter replacement.

Moved on to another company more interested in serving its customers.
Description of Work: Called with an interest in getting a heat pump hybrid water heater installed. They recommended I switch to a hybrid product they support which was perfectly acceptable. I asked if they could come out and do an estimate, see if a hybrid was appropriate for my circumstances since there are some special requirements. I made it clear that even if a hybrid was not appropriate, I would still need a new water heater. I was told to go look up the requirements myself for the hybrid they recommended on the internet and see if it was appropriate. They did not seem to want to come out or really to work with me at all. They seemed less than knowledgeable in hybrid water heaters which might explain their reluctance, but it was still sad to me that I called them as the experts and they told me to go figure it out. I called this company due to its high ratings here but was disappointed by their obvious reluctance to work with a potential customer. They were polite, but if you are the experts, you shouldn't ask me to do the research, that is why I call you. I have called another company and they are coming out to do a survey tomorrow for the same model of water heater to see if it is appropriate. If so, they will instal, if not, they will recommend a more appropriate model and install.

The sales representative explained to us that we could install a bypass whole house humidifier at the same time that we replaced our old furnace. The work was scheduled within a few days. The workers arrived on time and moved our water heater in order to have room to remove the old furnace and install the new one. The work was done in a few hours. The technicians cleaned everything up when they were finished and took the time to show me how to use the new thermostat. They were professional and efficient. A few days later I noticed that there was a small leak coming from the water heater. A representative came and fixed it within an hour of my call.

1. HVAC - When I changed my air filter in the HVAC, I noticed rusting in the filter and then noticed some dripping in the unit. The technician was prompt and professional. He tested several options and determined the leak was simply condensation from the line (it was during the height of summer), rather than a leak. He simply taped up the line for insulation and charged the standard fee for an assessment ($95). I was pleased that he explained everything he was doing (overfilling the pan, cranking up the air) and the reasoning behind his assessment. 2. Plumbing - The plumber (Danny) initially diagnosed the smell was simply from dry traps and stated he wouldn't even charge me, which was certainly more than generous considering he had made the trip. I said thanks, but explained that probably wasn't the case. He did a more thorough inspection and decided the tank needed to be sealed. When I called Nugent and expressed my doubts on that conclusion (for a variety of reasons), the technician's boss (Oscar?) explained why that step needed to be taken first even if it was unlikely to be the cause (kind of like a differential diagnosis by a medical doctor, it seems). Nugent later decided they couldn't do the work, but referred me to a septic company, who hasn't fixed the problem (yet) - but does seem knowledgeable. This is a long way of saying, even though they didn't fix the problem, Nugent has been a pleasure to deal with due to their professionalism, knowledge, prompt responses, business contacts, and great customer service. 3. I called for a chandelier installation and the receptionist said they no longer had an electrician on staff at Nugent, but referred me to Benchmark Electric. Benchmark was excellent - very prompt and even came before my work hours (7am) to install one of the chandeliers. Two chandeliers were installed ($150 per trip) and both were done very well. In one instance, when the electrician removed the original light fixture, he discovered an extremely outdated and incompatible box (my house is 100 years old), but the was able to reconfigure the box to fit the more modern chandelier apparatus. Prompt, courteous, and professional.
Description of Work: 1. HVAC - assessment of possible line leak 2. Plumbing - sewage smell in bathroom 3. Chandelier installation (x2) - they don't actually do this any longer, but gave me an excellent referral - Benchmark Electric (which unfortunately doesn't seem to be listed on Angie's List yet)

When we returned home to a cold house on Friday evening we knew that there was a problem with the furnace. After calling three companies, I received a reply from two . The first company would charge me a $165 weekend service fee plus parts. Nugent & Sons quoted me a fee of only $95. Neither company would come and fix the problem on that Friday night. So, we made an appointment with Nugent for Saturday morning. They showed up promptly and found the problem was a burned out igniter. After getting an estimate, I decided that for a few dollars more, I could purchase a one year service contract. The original price was a $95 weekend charge plus about $335 for the part. I thought that the price for the part was rather high. Other than the high priced part, I was satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: The broken/burned out gas igniter was replaced on our furnace.

They scheduled me for about 3 weeks out, since it was heavy inspection season for their maintenance contract holders. When the day came, Michael showed up about an hour into my 4 hour window. They called 30 minutes before he got there to tell me. He did a full inspection of the system, took the panels off, asked questions, described everything he was doing and checking (and why! awesome) to the clueless homeowner. He gave helpful hints for maintenance and troubleshooting. He changed out the filter and cleaned my humidifier, and showed me how to do it from here on out. He then found a problem with air flow through the unit, which he did a good bit of troubleshooting on. We had the sense that the unit wasn't working quite as well as it should. When he checked the parts, they were pretty dirty, and we talked about the floor refinishing we'd had done earlier in the year. The dust and particles from that had clogged up the heat coil, we thought, restricting the air flow. Michael scheduled me for the next morning to come in for two hours to clean. Again, they called before and he was right on time. On the second day I left him alone to do his cleaning, which he had to take the whole unit apart to do on three different areas. Once clean, he retested the system and we have better airflow, good temp readings and proper operation, which should save us some money and a lot of wear and tear on the unit itself. I am extremely happy I called. It was worth the money to get the repair done properly, and I feel now that I know enough to troubleshoot and know when to call in the pros at Nugent again in the future. We couldn't have been happier with Michael's service, the help he gave us and the professional manner in which he did his job.
Description of Work: I called Nugent and sons based on the excellent reviews on Angie's list. I scheduled an HVAC Inspection, which was listed on their website special at $80, since I had some questions about how my furnace/AC and humidifier were working and functioning. I planned to have just the inspection done to learn more about my systems, but they ended up doing a full cleaning of all the blower, heat exchange and heat coil parts too.

Had another appointment with Nugent for HVAC a few days later, so they scheduled the plumber to come at the same day/time window, which was really helpful. They said they'd call 30 minutes before he came, they did and he was on time. The cost of the visit was supposed to be $95, and they said if we had work done that day, they'd apply the $95 visit charge to the work. Fair enough. The plumber got there, took a look (and a smell) at the sinks, and explained that the smell was not sewer gas, but bacteria built up under the drain and up into the sink overflow areas under the drain. He showed me how to take out the drain plug, by loosening the one screw under the sink and pulling it out, then showed me where to clean. He did that on two sinks. He then charged me $140. The extra $45 was for, I guess, unscrewing the drain plugs, an operation which took him about as long as it took you to read this sentence. I thought this was an unprofessional upcharge on top of the $95 bucks which I paid to have him come out, and the fact that this call required no work at all on his part (he didn't even bring tools to the door, which I suspect might have been due to the fact that they probably get a lot of "funny smell" calls which end up being the same thing). I'm an adult and was ready to pay the $95 for my own education, which I will hopefully leverage to save plumber calls in the future to really important plumbing matters. The extra charge seemed like a lot of overkill. Whether driven by company policy or commission or whatever, I don't know, but I had also had Nugent's HVAC team out at the house doing over $500 worth of work on my HVAC system on the same day, so, again, just kind of seemed like salt in the wound. That said, the plumber was personally very professional, on time, helpful and I would call Nugent again based upon their reputation if I had a real plumbing problem. Hopefully my loyalty would be recognized next time.
Description of Work: We had a funny smell coming from a few of our sinks. Sewer gas/rotting kind of smell. Called to schedule a plumber. The plumber came and told us how to clean our sinks to eliminate the smell. It wasn't plumbing related.

It went extremely well. Dave and Brian arrived on time, were very friendly and professional, fixed our problem, and provided helpful advice on how to prevent a recurrance of the issue. And they even provided us a pleasant surprise by giving us a special discount for being an Angie's List member, even though they had not publicized such a discount. We called a number of companies for quotes. The salesperson for Nugent and Sons arrived on time and went over the system with me. While the labor and material he described was in line with the other companies we spoke to, the amount of detail and information he shared with us regarding the process was much more detailed than any other company we spoke to. He thoroughly inspected our home and our system and we felt comfortable with Nugent's understanding of our current HVAC system. The price we were quoted stood solidly in between the highest and lowest quotes we received and in addition their schedule fit well with ours. It took two days to replace the two systems; the crew was professional and courteous. They installed the system on one of the days where we had an extreme amount of rain and ran upstairs to point out a seeping area underneath the chimney that they had noticed as they were working. Once the job was complete they explained the systems to me, and showed me the details of all the work they had done. The salesman came by to make sure I was happy with the installation. Overall, my wife and I were extremely pleased with the level of service provided.

Description of Work: I called for a winter furnace service/inspection, and to have someone educate me on the humidifier since I’ve never own one before until we brought this house. The technician showed up on time. He inspected the furnace and said everything seemed to be in order, but he did note some rust given its age (’79) and suggested in a year or two that we get it replaced. He recommended that we install carbon monoxide detectors in the house to be safe. He also explained how the humidifier worked and how to operate it, and he replaced humidifier’s filter which was pretty rusted.

I called the company. They came at the agreed time to give the estimate. They explained how only the 600 series humidifier would fit (other companies gave an estimate over the phone for a 700 series without looking at my furnace setup). On the day of the install, they arrived on time and did a good job. They explained the operation before they left. They very professional and courteous. They even installed a new thermostat for me even though that was not included in the quote and showed me how to operate the programmable thermostat. I would definitely use them again. Description of Work: Water leaking from HVAC system. I called Nugent this morning and Greg and Brian came out this morning and not only fixed my leak problem but corrected the wiring on my humidifier and cleaned my furnace. The humidifier wasn't connected correctly so that it ran all the time vice just in the winter. They were extremely professional and made helpful suggestions such as buying a water sensor alarm to put on the floor so if I get water on the floor again it will alert me before it soaks my carpet. I also signed up for the yearly maintenance contract so the furnace cleaning was done under that and I was not charged extra. I would highly recommend this company.

On Friday morning I went downstairs and heard water dripping (and I had nothing turned on), and when I opened the door to our laundry room, I discovered that our water heater had sprung a leak! Water was coming out at a steady rate and had already flooded that room and part of our bottom floor. I immediately called John Nugent & Sons, and they were spectacular. The extremely calm woman who answers the phone (in my panic I've forgotten everyone's name, unfortunately) connected me to a supervisor, who calmly and patiently walked me through turning off the main water valve (for some reason I had no idea where it was located) and the water to the water heater. A very short time later two technicians arrived and replaced the water heater and answered all of my questions. I can't adequately describe just how frantic I was and just how helpful they all were. I called John Nugent & Sons because I had had a very good experience with them in the past regarding our furnace and our air conditioner. They were excellent in every regard. To anyone reading this: If your water heater is near 15 years old (as ours was), you might consider replacing it before you experience the same situation.

Record rains and what happens, the sump pump stops working! To make matters worse, floods everywhere have every contractor busy for weeks! I logged-on to Angieslist, and found John Nugent & Sons Inc. When I called and explained my situation and how I got their number, they indicated they could have someone out to my house within 3 hours! Of course, they wanted to know if I could get the swimming pool in my basement drained by then! I assured them that I could. With that being said, 3 hours later, Oscar arrived to replace the pump! WOW - is all I can say! You just can't find service like that anymore!

There was massive basement flooding, which cut off our hot water heater. The heater says to contact a professional before re-lighting the pilot light after water has gotten into the unit so we called Nugent and Sons. The receptionist and the technician were both really professional and prompt, giving us a 4 hour time window and calling 30 min prior to his arrival to let me know he was on his way. They ended up giving me a break on the price as well. He also checked to be sure my sump pumps were working - and did not charge me for that, which gave me extra peace of mind given the crazy flooding.

John Nugent and Sons, Inc. is the best company that I ever dealt with from the beginning until the end of the job! All of their people were honest, polite, reliable, efficient, punctual, knowledgeable and very professional. My air conditioner was not working in the middle of a heat wave and the gentlemen who gave me the estimate returned the next day to charge my old air conditioner unit for free, while the company that had repaired it six weeks earlier gave me an appointment for two weeks later. The foreman from John Nugent and Sons, Inc. came the day after the estimator to take measurements and two other gentleman successfully installed the new unit within a weeks time. I highly recommend this company to anyone and everyone! I could not be happier with their performance!

They initially came out once because the AC stopped. He filled it with freeon and told me that it was just a temporary fix. They came back the next day when it stopped due to freon leaking. We talked about looking for the leak and fixing the problem, but I made the decision to buy a new air conditioner due to the age of the unit and the cost of the repair. He said it might take some time to install the air conditioner and offered to bring me a window air conditioner while I was waiting, but I said I would be fine. They called the next day to tell me they had a unit and the time to install it. I said that would be fine and they came out and did the work and everything is working wonderfully.
Description of Work: They installed a new air conditioner for me.
