The technician, Jason Yim, called me about 15 minutes prior to arriving to ensure that I was ready for the services to be performed. He proceeded to check the thermostat and then the various units to determine if there were any issues present. After a thorough inspection he recommended that we replace the entire unit. He mentioned that they have a financing program available and then he provided me with the costs of the various options that I could select. He was very knowledgeable and provided me with the answers of the questions that I had. My wife and I decided that we would ultimately get another opinion since it was such a large financial decision and Jason was very open to that choice. He completely understood our decision despite taking the extra time to go through the initial paper work. We are strongly going to consider Nugent & Sons in the event that we do replace the unit due to the company's professional nature and respect of our decision.
Description of Work: As part of the Angie's List offer, the provider performed a general inspection of our AC Unit. It was discovered that our refrigerant was low so he added a pound to the unit.

I was at the service contract with them by then and they helped me installed a new furnace and water heater early 2014. The installation was a great job. Very professional. However, when a technician showed up for the spring AC turn up in 2015, he said I need to add 3 pounds freon without mentioning anything about freon leaking. So we added 3 pounds freon and then this summer my AC stopped working and I had to add another 3 pounds freon. If the technician told me about the leaking or did a leaking test, no such thing would happen this year. I called them saying I like their service and would like to have them back in the future but wanted to figure out first why no leaking test was done. They said they would talk to the technician and call me back. It never happens. I am very disappointed. Not sure whether the way the technician dealt with the freon issue is a company policy because they don't bother to call back.

We needed a new hot water; they came out within a couple of hours of our call to assess the situation. Ben, our technician was able to fix it where we could use cold water until the next day, when the new water heater would come in to be installed. Ben was able to get the hot water heater installed within a couple of hours. We've been customers of John Nugent for 21 years, and we are pleased with their service.

We had a Carrier mini-split system installed in 2013. The tech who installed the system was no longer with the original company, and no longer works on Carrier systems. He suggested John Nugent & Sons. After checking reviews here on Angie's List, I called Sarah, and explained that one of our mini-split units wouldn't turn on, and was showing an E6 error message. According to the user manual, this indicates a communication issue between the unit and the condenser. Sarah assured me that John Nugent & Sons can service Carrier systems, and sent out a tech on Monday, 16 May. He was punctual, but his demeanor was something akin to Denis Leary's more sarcastic side. Now, this is FINE; I don't mind some wit and humor with my home maintenance projects. But he kept asking (or announcing, rather), "why is the condenser running when all the units are turned off?" Well, that's why I called you guys! Like I could possibly know. So I got the impression that not only was this tech unprepared to diagnose or service a Carrier system, but it seems that John Nugent and Sons doesn't really specialize in Carrier systems! Okay, so this is one of those universal cases where the techs in the field may not be on the same page as the staff in the office. But seriously? He suggested I call Carrier directly. REALLY? He called someone at Carrier, who told him to cut the power, wait five minutes, and then turn it back on again. Um... that's the joke about computer repair, too... So he seemed puzzled, but he wasn't particularly rude. It was just an odd experience for me, because it seems that I shouldn't have bought the $49 service call Deal after all. I am just a customer who doesn't really know anything about A/C diagnostics, so of course I would call a repair service. But to be told that I needed to call Carrier directly was just ... odd. So what do you guys do?
Description of Work: I needed maintenance on a Carrier Mini-Split unit that was giving me an E6 error message (communication). The maintenance was done, somewhat. Basically, the technician called Carrier, who suggested he turn the condenser unit off and then back on again.

The salesman (Matt?) who came out listened to what we wanted to accomplish in our limited space and made several recommendations to improve our access to the plumbing, in addition to recommending a tankless water heater that would perform as well as the old tank. The workers were all quite capable, the work was done promptly, and we have had no problems since the installation.

I contacted John Nugent & Sons for an estimate for a gas line installation in the back yard for a deck that I am building. There is already a connection coming out of the house. The line is less than 20 feet long. It is a straight forward, simple job as I have been told by each plumber that has come to take a look. My issue is twofold. 1) the cost and 2) the follow up. 1) estimate: the estimate was $1,550. This cost was over double what others have quoted. A company is within it's right to charge whatever they like and a consumer has the right to pay that amount or refuse as I did in my case, refuse. However, the consumer also as the right to notify others when they feel the price or any other action is unjustified or unwarranted. In this case it's a rip-off and I don't use that term lightly. If any consumer contacts this company beware of their cost structure. Make sure to get at least one other estimate before contracting with John Nugent & Sons. You will be happy you did. 2) follow up: I called the company several times. The woman who answered the phone was polite and professional. I stated that an estimate was done for me and I felt that cost was high and wanted to get an explanation of the actual work that would be preformed to justify this cost. Each time the woman said she would contact the individual who did the estimate as he was in the field and he would get back to me that day. I have never gotten a call back. I believe this is because there is no way they can justify the amount they wanted to charge and realize that if I am questing it I am probably not going to contract with them. On this point they are now correct. I am disappointed in this company. Their cost was too high and their communication was too low. Not a good combination. I am not telling anyone not to use them just make sure you check out other companies before committing to this one.

The service personnel arrived on time. The work was both inside the house and outside. They laid down tarps in the house and always wore shoe coverings. Their work ethic was excellent and their attitude was cheerful. They were always ready to explain what and why they were doing. Even when the rain came and they were standing in mud and getting soaked, they had a smile on their faces and worked like the sun was out. When the work was completed, they cleaned up, both inside and out, so well that the house was cleaner than when they started. I am very happy with the work they did, the system they installed (a Carrier Infinity). The installed equipment looks like a showcase job, nothing out of alignment or not quite fitting. I will continue to use John Nugent & Sons for future work (owning a house means that there will always be something that needs fixing). I recommend this company without hesitation.

A successful project is largely dependent on homeowners educating themselves. So, here is the approach that I used to ensure success - I had two factors for evaluation: (a) Price, and (b) Quality of workmanship. Quality and Price had a 60:40 weighted ratio. Key Steps: (a) Selected 4 vendors from Anjies List, and Checkbook.org, (b) Invited them to provide bids/quotes in Dec. 2015. John Nugent and sons were late arrivals to the bid process. Caution: Judge your instinct about vendors. If someone comes across off, dis-invite them from the party. The bidders list included SSI, Argent, Costco, John Nugent. The bid prices ranged from $12,000 to $17,500 for the same job. My mind was made up to select Argent Heating and Cooling; One review on Anjies list concerned me. So, I decided to focus on John Nugent. Was not happy with them either - I called a woman named, Nancy Nugent (must be the owner), left a voice mail to call me back. NEVER HEARD BACK. In my playbook, this is BAD and receives a "C" rating. I called the Sales Rep who had provided the original bid. I referred to one specific extremely negative review on Anjies list. I asked him to explain the issue - the explanation was plausible enough to give them the benefit of doubt; especially, after a lot more positive feedback on Checkbook.org. It is also important to structure the payment terms in the final contract - 25% upfront with the remaining 75% to be paid after final county inspection. For larger projects, I would include penalty clauses. Overall, John Nugent was the winner, and as expected performed very well with overall rating of A. They were not the lowest priced vendor - they came in at $13,400.

Carl and his co-workers did a fantastic job, promptly and quickly. We plan on working with them again and would absolutely recommend them to others. The quality of the work appears excellent and the Nugent and Sons folks were very clear and straightforward in all their assessments and advice. After coming out to the house to work on relocating our ductwork, Carl found that our ancient furnace was leaking gases into the house, a major problem! He recommended a few options for new furnaces and they were able to bring one out and install it on the same schedule as the original job. The new furnace and ducts are great and really made a difference for us. Other companies simply declined this job or offered unworkable ideas, so I'm glad we found these guys.

They did a nice job. We will probably hire them for summer when we get ready for summer air conditioning. We've had them for years. They are very reliable. We like them very much. If there is a problem, they come back without extra costs and on time. They have a good write-up in our local book that says who is reliable and so forth. They are always listed in it. I haven't seen any change in it.

Several concerns regarding the installation. First, before installation, I did walk through with the work supervisor to identify where vents should be cut. Company cut three holes in floor in areas that were different from our discussions. I was able to address this during the construction and the vents were recut in the appropriate locations. This would have been a huge problem, except that I would soon be redoing then entire floor in the specified areas. Second, when installing the split system on the second floor, the installers cut my electrical wiring to the outside spot light and indoor light/fan. This was never repaired because I believed that this area would also be renovated, I did not bother to bring this to their attention. Third, the day that they completed the job, one of the workers called me at work to demand that I leave work to write him a check for the final installment on the work. Mind you I had not even been able to determine if the job was completed appropriately and the city inspectors had not been out to o.k. the work. I called the company to inquire how I could sign off on a job when they had not even obtained the final certification from the inspectors. That prompted the company to set up the inspection. I was told before the inspection not to ask any questions. After the inspection, I paid the balance. The inspector was impressed with the work that was done on the central heating unit (he did not inspect the mini split which was not a required part of the inspection). However, and most disappointingly, within a few months of the work, birds began to eat the foam insulation that was used to cover the outside copper pipes for the mini split system. I called and inquired with the company because I had recalled during the installation that I had been told that there would be a covering over the coils. When I called, the salesmen acknowledge that he knew birds eating the insulation was a potential problem. However, the salesman said that he didn't know what the workmen told me and that "he did not know why I was never told that there was a casing that could be purchased to cover the outside pipes." However, it was the company's position that the foam insulation was standard for installation of the mini split system and that they would charge me another $1,200 for them to cover the pipes with the non-edible material. Having already paid top dollar to have the system put into the house and even having provided a sizable tip to the workers despite the mistakes (I was unaware of the electrical mistake at the time) and the rudeness of one of its employees in demanding payment before the inspector had even cleared the job, I was not agreed to pay the company another $1,200 to do what should have originally been part of the contract and undertaken by the company. This company was at the top of my estimates for the work, but I had confidence that they would advise me well regarding what needed to be done and execute well. The installation of the central HVAC was up to code. The mini split did not have to undergo inspection and the company did not provide me with information concerning their installation of the mini split that will cause me problems from here on out. Therefore, I can't recommend them for any future project. I contracted to get the best job done and every time I see a bird, I feel I got short changed.

He was right on time, and did a great job. He spent about 30 minutes assessing our units on both floors and gave us a diagnostic on its overall condition. He was honest and did not try to tell us to upgrade or that it required a whole bunch of work. I was then able to follow up with my regular repair company on the small improvements that were needed, and we were good to go. We've had no problems!

It went very well! The 3 installers, Ronnie, Michael, and Jack, showed up on time and were very professional and nice. They took precautions to keep the walkways and area clean. One worked on removing the heat pump from the attic and one worked on removing the outside unit and one was between both of them helping and managing. They all were positive, hardworking, and collaborative individuals. They explained to me what I needed to know when i needed to know. They took most all day as planned and everything went off without a hitch. The salesperson , M Jackson was great too. Not pushy at all. I had used them once before and the two service people were great which is why I wanted to use them again. They matched the lowest price of all the companies I had out for an estimate. They used carrier brands for everything. The installer working outside even went steps ahead to properly secure some other random wiring which was hanging down along the siding of my house. I would absolutely use them again. This company is consistent with their outstanding customer service.
