We used Shreve-McGonegal because they were able to come out the very next morning to unclog our kitchen sink. (We called at noon.) A plumber and a carpenter came first thing (~8AM). We didn't ask why the carpenter, but suspect that their next job may have been bigger. Regardless, it was nice to know that should the issue have been far worse than anticipated, they were ready to get behind the cabinets.

Service was professional, thorough, and as swift as can be (without looking like they were in a hurry to go to the next job, but rather like they knew what they were doing and didn't have to waste any time). They even fixed a minor pipe problem while there and provided some plumbing advice.

Unfortunately, I have to give Shreve a failing grade. I say and quot;unfortunatelyand quot; because the plumber who came to my house, Mr. Hai, was beyond good. He was perfect. If he goes elsewhere, I will follow him. However, the management seems unwilling or unable to honor the $50 discount they promise to Angie's List members. Their prices strike me as high to begin with--and I went with them because of the Angies review. But I've been unable to get management to deduct the $50 from the bill they promise on your site .
Response from Shreve-McGonegal

"We did grant this request to refund the member the coupon amount even though it was not presented at time of service. Please note the date and time credit was run on the credit card approval. We have spoken with the member on a couple of occasions explaining the credit was run and to check his statement."

Very well. He left the bathroom cleaner than it was before his arrival and even followed up with me on other shower arms I could try.

This was our second use of the company for the same issue -- sewage line back-up. Both times, plumbers arrived at the house the same day and completed work in a quick, efficient and professional manner. The second time, in a late-day emergency call, after power-snaking the line and running into problems, the crew suggested it was a more serious pipe issue outside the house -- and outside of their services. They provided a recommendation, which worked out. However, they left the toilet off the drain, claiming it was a convenience to any subsequent plumbing crew who would need to access that pipe in the coming days. That was incorrect and non-standard. They also nicked the stairwell wall moving the power equipment in and out. To the company's credit, after calling them to fix the situation, they dispatched a second crew several days later to reset the toilet.

Overall, any plumbing issue can become very costly, so the prices are going to be and quot;highand quot; in most cases. It's also hard to complain when a crew works past 8pm to get sewage out of your house. But it's those finishing touches that separate good crews from great ones. The lesson for me was to ask a lot of questions and get smart on your options. I'd use these guys again but be much more vigilant.

I called at 8:30 on a Monday morning, after discovering the shower problem on Sunday evening. The person who answered the phone was courteous and asked a few questions about the problem. She then said that a service person would be at the house within two hours . . . he arrived 75 minutes later. After showing him the two separate plumbing problems, he went to work and was finished by 11:00 am. He was friendly, courteous, and seemingly quite competent. He showed me exactly what he'd done to repair both problems which, appeared to be substantial fixes rather than simple patches.

I will never use this company again. I needed a battery back up for my sump pump and what I got was a lot of incompetence. They were the only company willing to come out when a storm was approaching so I was really pleased about that. They charged a fortune for the battery backup but I didn't want to take the chance of a flooded basement so I told them to go ahead. Funny thing was the technician told me that it was highway robbery and I shouldn't do it. I told him to do it anyway. In the process of installing the battery he flooded our basement and didn't tell us. It wasn't until later that evening when I went to check on it that I saw an inch of muddy water covering the floor and all of our belongings. I called Shreve but they blew me off. I cleaned the mess and chalked it up to incompetence, but it got worse. After a few weeks we started to smell sulphur in the air and we were getting headaches. With a newborn baby and a young child in the house I called someone to help me determine what was going on. Turned out that the battery was sizzling (getting ready to blow) and the sulphur smell was terrible in the furnace room. I called Shreve back and they were dismissive. They finally sent someone out who installed a new battery. They told me the sensor wasn't working and that it would take 3 weeks for the part to come in. 3 weeks later I received no call. I called them back and they acted like this had never happened. I was also told I was going to get a new sump pump that was industrial strength (for my troubles) but never received that as well. I followed up again with a call to Chuck who said he would call me back. No call. Bottom line is that my experience was awful and I believe them to be unscrupulous in their practices. I will go out of my way to not recommend them for their awful service.

Came to repair malfunctioning faucet (was leaking; screaming with "washer chatter." Helped define possible solution, but did not resolve it. Will require at least 1/2 more service call(s) to resolve, if I do not determine solution through the manufacturer. Given the facts, I cannot complain. Gent was pleasant and very flexible on arrival time (had to cancel once and reschedule for later in day).

I would not use this company again. It was not an emergency situation. However, the plumber who attended for the service was rude and talked back to me in a way that made me feel uncomfortable and threatened that he would leave the service as it was in the midst of the work as I questioned the amount paid. I did speak to a manager and it was not fully resolved.

Other plumbers had said they would find a solution or tear out the wall -- they never called back. I went to Shreve McGonagal plumbing supply shop and ordered a new fixture set that would meet dimensions of old one (they were very helpful in making sure sizes would work.) When they came to install the new fixture, the plumber was so skilled that he was able to reach inside the opening in the tile and replace the valve -- including soldering it -- with no damage to the tile and without having to make any holes in the wall behind. (No, this house does not have an access panel -- great 1970's construction.) Brilliant job -- looks wonderful.

Overall, the experience went really well. We used a number of different plumbers in the past, and it was really hit or miss. These plumbers arrived on time, explained to us what was happening before they did the work, and then unclogged the drain. They did a lot of testing when they finished the work to make sure that the drain was truly unblocked. It worked out really well.

I called Shreve and they had someone in my area who arrived very soon afterwards, which was wonderful. The plumber was pleasant and professional. He quickly changed out the faucet cartridge. The job took MAYBE thirty minutes. I was very happy until after he left. I checked the price of the cartridge he replaced because I had no idea what they cost. At Home Depot the exact same part (same brand and part number) costs $19.97. So the labor for this repair was $260.00. That seems excessive for a thirty minute, easy job. I realize plumbing is expensive, but $260 for thirty minutes?

I inadvertently dropped a hard plastic piece of a drain plug down our basement floor drain. I could not reach the obstruction and water started baking up on the basement floor. After checking Angie's List, I called Shreve-McGonegal who dispatched a plumber in short order. The plumber arrived early and with great dexterity was able to remove the object from the drain after about 30 minutes. I cannot thank Shreve-McGonegal enough for the outstanding job and the professionalism of their plumber. I also appreciated the $50.00 off Angie's List coupon.

The service rendered by the technician is better than the dispatch center. When I called the company, the woman at the dispatch center was not very patient. She said the technician will diagnose when he arrives and give me a quote. If I do not want to have the service done, then there will be a dispatch fee of $50. All I asked was if the dispatch fee will also be added if I decide to use the service. Then the woman lost her patience: and quot;I can give you my supervisor if you want, but I didn't decide on the pricing.and quot; All I asked was a clarification on the dispatch fee. That was all. If this company did not have an A rating, I would have aborted by then.

The technician Gerry was late in the designated window because he was held up by the previous appointment and because he was lost. When he finally showed up, the only description on the ticket was and quot;broken toiletand quot; although I spent a long time with the woman at the dispatch center. Again the dispatch center had the worst service. Then I was disappointed that he did not attempt to repair the broken valve. But I think this is the trend --- no one tries to fix anything any longer. When he suggested replacing both the valve and the flapper, I wasn't too happy. Why are you suggesting me to replace the flapper that is clearly not broken???

On the second thought, it makes sense from a price perspective. Replacing both parts costs $215 (minus $50 first-time customer coupon). Replacing the valve or the flapper alone each costs $180, so why not replacing both to save the trouble?

In addition, they provide one-year warranty so that makes me feel slightly better. (p.s. But I have to say the original valve broken shortly after one-year manufacture warranty.)

This is a very simple job. What I like about the technician is that he has excellent customer service skills and never loses his patience. The last thing I want is to have a hot-tempered technician at my house. I don't want to pay for the lack of professionalism.

I am generally happy with the service overall, but I am not very happy about the attitude dispatch center and that the technician did not have the latest maps on his GPS.

Excelled experience. Plumber came as stated. A four hour window, but he arrived early and completed the work as required.

They have a standard bill established for each routine task. The fee seemed high but frankly they are allowing for labor time to snake under a kitchen sink, especially an old house takes time. They normally have to remove the garbage disposal and frequently replace the shut off valves.

Done within an hour, and done well. We are glad we chose them for this task.

Called at midnight for emergency service due to sewer back in basement. Friendly, courteous direct contact with plumber (Gerry) over the phone. He told me upfront the cost of the after hours charge which I appreciated. And, he said he would arrive in two hours because he needed to go to the office to pick up certain equipment. He arrived sooner, identified problem and resolved it. Despite having been working since 7 am this morning, he was personable, polite and professional. He was careful to be be neat when moving equipment/walking through the house. I paid the $ 150 after hours charge plus fee for snaking the drain. I would definitely use the company again and was very impressed.

Some companies advertise emergency services but when you call, you get an answering machine only. This company truly does have emergency services. My only suggestion is that they indicate clearly on the after hours recording, what number to push to reach someone. It's a bit unclear on the recording. A+ experience.

I had had a similar problem with another frost-free faucet and had used another company so I knew it could be expensive to replace. When I asked for an estimate, the employee on the phone said not all of the faucets had to be replaced; some could be repaired. I asked if he had a list of prices for different services, but he did not answer me. He did, however, say the cost of repairing the faucet would be about $175. He did not give me a price for replacement even though I asked. Since I had an Angie's coupon for 10/% off, I decided to go ahead and schedule a visit. The technician came at the scheduled time, replaced the faucet (It could not be repaired), and was thorough and professional. My only complaint was that the employee I spoke with on the phone was not forthcoming about the price. Since the technician arrived with a notebook with prices for each job, I can only assume the man on the phone had one, too.

Next time I won't use this company if I can't get an answer to fixed pricing when I call.

While I wasn't really unhappy with the attitude of the first plumber, he really wasn't very professional compared to the more sober second plumber. He also had an attitude about the plumbing design which admittedly was old and probably antiquated in today's terms, but that's what plumbers sometimes have to deal with, so complaining about the system won't solve my problem. The fact that the solution to S-M's problem was so obvious leads me to believe that either S-M doesn't supply its employees with the equipment needed or maybe that they either fail to properly train or hire plumbers with the knowledge needed for situations like this. In view of the high prices charged by S-M and any plumbing operation, one should expect better preparation than this.

One thing I and anyone needing plumbing services should do in general is to check with home owner's associations ahead of time to see if a problem such as this is covered by the HOA and also to see if neighbors with adjoining sewage systems are experiencing the same problems. This depends on the sewage system in place, as well as the HOA agreement.
