Initial Quote Process
- I called 5 different contractors and received 4 quotes. (BNW builders didn't provide a quote)
- Skyline's quote for vinyl windows was within $800 of the cheapest quote and $7000 less then the most expensive quote. I should mention that I went with the more expensive composite windows which put it around $2400 higher than the cheapest quote.
- No high pressure sales tactics, straight to the point.
- I like the fact that I was dealing with the owner of the company rather than a sales person.
- I had my initial appoint in the morning and received my quote within the same day.
- I was informed it would take 3-5 weeks to order the windows once I signed the contract.
- Skyline estimated that it would take 2 days to install the windows.
- Windows arrived within 3 weeks which was earlier than I expected since I was told 3-5 weeks.
- It took a total of 3 days to install all of the windows.
- They showed up when they said they would.
- They did everything they said they would.
I do a lot of home improvements projects myself (built-ins, molding, tile work, flooring) and I am very happy with the work that Skyline has done for me. I was initially a bit worried when they said it would only take 2 days to install the windows. I didn't want them to do a rush job, happily it was not a rush job and they did excellent work. The windows were installed before hurricane Irene and survived the storm without any leaks or problems. I would recommend Skyline Windows to anyone and will probably use them to replace my patio doors in the future.
Now the bad... There is really only one major flaw with Skyline. Their communication (with customers and internally) is absolutely terrible! I waited days for an estimate when other companies were able to give me a quote on the spot. It took weeks to get the windows ordered and other work started after I gave them the OK. I left numerous messages that went unanswered. Apparently Randy is the only person that can make a decision at Skyline and he is impossible to get in touch with - both by me and his employees. If he ever does contact you, it will be via email. I have yet to speak with him on the phone.
Even though it was a hassle to work with Skyline, I was willing to let them do one more small job for me - wrapping the exterior trim around my new windows. I finally got their quote. It seemed a little high, so I tried to negotiate for a better price. Here is Randy's response (via email of course): "Call some other companies and have them price it. Good luck."
Thanks for the advice, Randy. I will call another company - for this and every other job I have in the future.
**Reply to Skyline's response: Thank you. I believe this proves just how unprofessional you are.
And for the record - I was not expecting your sub to be waiting at my door when I got home from work the same day the job was completed, and therefore did not have the correct checkbook. However, I did write him a check that day, from a different account, and asked that he allow 2 days for funds to be transferred into that account before depositing. The check cleared 4 days after the work was completed.
"I wish we could please everyone all of the time. We do try our best and are always willing to learn. There are times we just fall short of others expectations. Here are the facts regarding this situation. All chronicled and logged into our database. āThe Rest of the Storyā regarding Customer comments I waited days for an estimate when other companies were able to give me a quote on the spot.. Observation: Apparently Skyline offered the best product and price instead of just throwing an immediate price to the customer. Also this customer failed to mention that he rejected our original estimate which led to delays. (Wanted a lower price) I waited days for an estimate when other companies were able to give me a quote on the spot. Observation: Your initial appointment was on July 20. After receiving our estimate the customer wanted to make a number of changes(i.e. not ordering a door) and also wanted a cheaper price. After coming to an agreement the member asked us to place the order on August 10. On August 11 The member received an acknowledgement that his windows had been ordered and would arrive in Richmond on August 24. The windows were delivered to him the next day. Let us know if this works for you. Thank you, Customers response $700 sounds expensive, and I've already spent a lot of money with you guys. How about $500? I'll pay cash and you can start ASAP. -Member Our response Call some other companies and have them price it. Good luck. Customers response Are you serious? I've spent over $7000 with you in the last few weeks and you're telling me to go somewhere else over a couple hundred bucks? Unbelievable. Further observations- Actually the member paid Skyline $3760.00- Not 7,200.00. We recommended two companies that the member contracted to do work. After all work was completed he did not have the funds available to pay one of these companies when that was the agreement. He said to the siding company, āYou will have to wait for your moneyā."
