They correctly diagnosed the issue and were able to fix the problem at a great rate. We were about to leave town for a family trip, and they helped us get everything squared away quickly before our trip. They're also just lovely folks - kind, generous, and trustworthy. I'm a big fan.

They always work with me and my budget.  They break down the different repair needs and plans of attack to get them done within my budget.  I also like they always send hand-written thank you notes after each repair.

Wiygul's has done routine maintenance, replaced tires, and done major updates on four different brands of cars we've owned. We try to make advance appointments for time-consuming work but they've also helped us in a jam. If we drop in for something minor, like a tire or fluid check, they do their best to help in a timely manner.

Result: I did not have the work done by Wiygul, and did not end up replacing the rack and pinion at all. Wiygul correctly passed the car on re-inspection. Here are the chronology and details: My wife had taken it to Wiygul and got the above rejection and quote. I was immediately suspicious, as the steering worked fine, we had no drips on the driveway, and the power steering fluid level was normal. I looked under the car and did see that the rack and pinion boot (rubber sheath covering the end and protecting the part from dirt and weather) was torn, but I did not see any leaking. I put cardboard under it three nights in a row to check for drips. There were none. I looked up the State Inspection guidelines to see what their grounds for rejection that meant replacing an entire rack and pinion unit were. Based on the rules, it seemed to me that the car should not have been rejected, but I thought I'd get the story from Wiygul. I called Wiygul to ask about the diagnosis. Where was the leak? The boot was, in fact, covered in dirty grease or smudge, but I hadn't witnessed any power steering fluid leaking for two nights [at that point], and the fluid level was normal. Had they filled it with fluid during the inspection? No, they had not. Why would we replace the whole rack and pinion when it worked fine and wasn't leaking? And what about the fact that the State Inspection guidelines state that the steering should be rejected for: "...obvious leak of power steering fluid. Do not reject for dampness." The response was they see this all the time, and so they know it's no good and must be replaced. Why $1650, when the part costs $360 at Autozone? Was it going to take more than ten hours to install? The response was that they only use the best parts with long warranties, and that it takes about six hours. My interlocutor at Wiygul did not at any point suggest that: a) it's possible that there was not a real issue requiring a failed inspection (in this case, after all, the inspection rules don't say it has to be perfect, just not characterized by an "obvious leak"); or b) there might be other ways to fix the problem. His establishment's opinion was that the only solution was to replace the entire rack and pinion unit. For that, they charged $1650. Within a couple of hours, I had quotes for $1400, $1240, and $750 (the latter without alignment) from three other shops I sometimes take my cars to. In the end, I took the car to the cheapest of the three. They cleaned up everything, inspected carefully, did not find a leak, and put a new boot on. I paid less than $100. I took it back to Wiygul for re-inspection. To their credit, they passed it without any comment. So the bottom line is that an extremely borderline inspection rejection was accompanied by a very high estimate for a repair that was not, in fact, needed. Wiygul has a good reputation in general, so I hope this was just a blip. Here is what Wiygul could have done to avoid this review: In light of the information I provided when I called (normal fluid level, no leaks on cardboard, state Inspection rules, etc), they could have offered to take a second look at it. They could have suggested that there might be other ways to fix this borderline problem ENOUGH TO PASS INSPECTION (which just requires that it not be visibly leaking), such as replace the torn boot and put in power steering treatment and observe for a while. A Google search finds lots of ways owners of that exact car have skinned this cat successfully. In short, they could have treated me like an informed customer who knows how to Google and how to make a few phone calls. They did not. (I won't argue with their most-expensive-among-those-I-checked-by-far price, because their pricing structure is not part of the problem I'm describing.)
