The work went exceptionally well considering that I had to get all the materials picked out from the end of October to the middle of November when I left for a three week vacation to Africa.  Rick provided me with a kitchen/bath planner.  She arrived on time and provided preliminary drawings.  The cabinets that she recommended were not what I expected.  I set up a meeting and went out to her work location to look at other kitchen cabinet options and to rework some of the design. It took several phone calls to get the new design and cabinet costs.  I did not feel that we were able to communicate and asked Rick/Dave (his assistant) for another company.  They provided one within a couple of hours.  I made an appointment and met with this new company and was able to select the cherry cabinets, molding and knobs/handles within a couple of hours. The new designer made quite a few recommendations including a custom design inside the kitchen sink cabinet that was a man made material to protect the cabinet from water and a change to make the upper cabinets fit more efficiently (less gap).  She priced two different lines and I accepted the lowest cost ones which was my first choice.  We priced two lines because one company was having a sale and she thought it would cost less.

Rick provided several tile places and I used two of them to pick out tile for the bathrooms. Both places were ideal to work with and provided help in selecting their products and then sending the quote directly to Thomas Custom Builders.  Before the work started, Dave went by and picked up samples of the tile selected.  It was a good thing he did because one of the wall tiles selected did not go with the rest of the tile.  We don't know if I selected the wrong tile or the store inadvertently entered the wrong stock number.  It didn't matter a quick trip out to the store fixed the problem and a disaster was averted.

To enlarge the shower area, a linen closet door in the master bath had to be removed.  Since the closet had to remain.  We closed off the closet in the master batch and opened up the wall in the 2nd master closet to provide an opening to the linen closet.  Dave drew an outline on the bathroom floor for both the shower and the bathtub.  Based on the outline, we enlarged the shower slightly and decided to build a 1/2 wall to enclose one end of the tub.  This wall also provided a shelf to store soap etc for the bathtub.  All this was done with the tile company present to make sure we had agreement on tile pattern layout, tile size to minimize cuts, placement of the custom made linear drain.  I couldn't install a regular linear drain because we were not able to open up the floor. Dave found a solution that worked.   The water pipes for the original bathtub were moved from their current location through the back wall of the bathroom to be able to center them on the bathtub and an extension drain had to be ordered to connect to the center drain on the tub and the existing drain in the condo.  The renovation of the 2nd bath was basically a remove and replace with no issues.

The bathrooms were renovated during the same time the flooring contractor was removing the old bamboo flooring.  The removal went smoothly and they staring installing the new floor.  Immediately problems occurred.  This put a dent in the schedule as the wood flooring needed to be completed before the kitchen could be started.  It took a month for the flooring problems to be resolved.  In the mean time, the cabinets arrived and had to be stored in the condo.  Thomas Custom Builders worked with the flooring installers to move cabinets, appliances and flooring materials back and forth several times to help with finishing the floor installation and finishing their job.  Both companies worked well together.

The kitchen cabinets were installed according to the plan.  It was determined the molding for the top of the cabinets was the wrong size.  They reordered the correct molding.  There was electrical plugs on the wall where the pantry cabinets were going to be installed along with a cable tv outlet.  Holes were cut in the back of the cabinets to accommodate the electrical and the tv outlet was rerouted to another location.  I brought the lights from my old house and Brian installed them.  The original light fixture in the kitchen was located between the island and the cabinets.  This caused shadows and very little light over the sink.  Brian extended the electrical to allow the light to be placed over the sink and island.  Lighting under the cabinets was installed. A new hood over the stove was installed that vented to the outside (I was luck they vent was already installed and I didn't have to use a vent less hood).

The ordering of the granite counter top did not go as smoothly.  The granite supplier was in Rockville/Bethesda Maryland area.  They had  a store in Springfield and it was suggested that I go there to pick out the granite.  I was told that the bathroom counter tops would be remnants and they would be picked from existing pieces and I would not be able to select them.  The Springfield store did not have any slabs for the colors selected.  I had to go to a granite warehouse in Maryland.  This took another trip.  The warehouse personnel were very knowledgeable and I was able to pick the slabs for the kitchen counter.  Several days later, I was informed that I needed to pick out the slab for the master bath.  I was unable to make another trip out in time so the granite folks went to the supplier and took pictures of several granite slabs and I was able to pick one to complement the tile in the master bath.  In the end the granite was delivered on time and the colors worked well.

I made a few changes along the way.  To add crown molding and re-tile the front entry way.  Had to pick more tile -- Brian, the onsite project manager and chief problem solver went to the store to pick up the tiles.  They were no longer made and he had to make a special trip to the only store that had them.  One of their junior employees started installing the crown molding and didn't realize that he needed to measure each corner and therefore there were larger than normal gaps. I let Rick/Brian know and they removed the previously installed molding the next day and correctly installed it.  They lived up to their motto to do it right with attention to detail.

Since I was not living in the condo, there was no need to pick up tools etc. each evening.  Even so, the area was broom swept and tools all put in one location each evening.  Cardboard etc was stacked to be removed.  Some items were sent to Habitat for Humanity Restore per their suggestion.

Throughout the job both Dave and Brian were available.  They asked for my preferences i.e,. where did I want the knobs/handles installed on the cabinets, where did I want to install the towel bars etc.

Thomas Custom Builders did an exceptional job.  They ordered all the materials and re-ordered the material sent incorrectly. They coordinated all their sub-contractors - i.e. tile and granite. While there are always problems with any renovation, they were there with  help in resolving any issues.  They returned phone call/emails promptly.  The renovation was exactly as I had envisioned. Despite the month long problem with the flooring (not within Thomas Custom Builders control), the job was only one week late in being completed within our initial timeline.  The new completion date was communicated in a timely manner and did not cause any problems.

As with any project there are things that go wrong after the work is completed.  A tile in the bathroom was chipped and they had it replaced. The front door

Our entire experience with Thomas Custom Builders was wonderful from start to finish. Rick walked us through every step from our first meeting, and was always a help with the many questions we had.

After years of hearing nightmares about contractors & home renovations, I am so glad that we found Thomas Custom Builders. They were finished within the timeline quoted, with no hidden expenses added to our project. The quality of the work was superb. We are constantly receiving compliments on the work done.

We look forward to working with TCB again on any other home improvement projects. In the future.

In seeking bids for the renovation, I contacted Thomas Custom Builders based on their positive reviews on Angie's List. Unlike some companies I called, I spoke immediately with the president, Rick, who understood exactly why I was calling and provided the information I needed to know. We scheduled an appointment a few days later. In that meeting, Rick made the process of working with a general contractor clear and gave me some very good advice based on our drawings. During the conversation, he mentioned a nearby project they were doing and arranged for me to visit the same day. I met Dave at the site and was impressed with their handling of the work. As we made our decision over the next two weeks, Rick immediately answered my phone calls and emails with the information I sought. They also provided me with regular email information on the process of a renovation and what to look for in a contractor. Ultimately we decided to go with a different contractor who made a cheaper offer based on unique circumstances.

Based on my positive experience, I will consider Thomas Custom Builders for future work.

"Dear Member, Thank you for your great review. We love seeing that you utilized Angie's List and contacted us based on our A rating. In your review, you listed many of the reasons why we do indeed receive such high grades and complimentary comments, the first being that Rick Thomas is always upfront and hands on, ready to help you understand and navigate through the entire process of renovation. Our clients are always very happy and willing to "show and tell" you of their experience with Thomas Custom Builders and Dave Holmes takes great pride in the work that takes place under his supervision along with his crews. We would have loved to complete your project for you, but understand that the initial contractor you were working with came back into the picture and there were some previous obligations. We look forward to working with you in any upcoming projects! Kind Regards, Rick Thomas and Dave Holmes"

The whole Thomas Custom Builders team is great. They came in exactly at the timeline on the contract and exactly on budget. When we started working together, they were very clear on what we could get with our budget. The kitchen designer they work with, Rachel Krush, is also outstanding. They don't use a lot of subcontractors, but the ones they use are subs they use all the time, which makes it like they are part of the team. A Thomas employee is always on site if a sub is working. The work they do is outstanding- great attention to detail and professionalism. The team that was on site with us for three months became like family. I have three little kids (3 years old and younger) so it was very important to me that the people working here were people I could trust. They were very careful to clean up at the end of the day so nothing dangerous was left out. We lived here during the renovation except for when the hardwood floors were being refinished, and even with the extent of the work being done, because they were so careful and neat, we could live here. Bottom line- I now have my dream house! I definitely recommend them? They also have done kitchen and bathroom remodels on my parents' house.
Response from Thomas Custom Builders Inc

"Dear Member, Thank you for the wonderful review! We loved to read your mention that the TCB team on your job "became like family". What an awesome compliment! As parents ourselves, we understand the importance of showing respect and gaining the trust of the families who allow us to be part of their daily lives during the project. Thank you for recognizing our efforts in that respect as well as our efforts on quality, timing and budget. It is certainly a high compliment when family members refer each other to us, and that is greatly appreciated! We will also pass on your kind words to Rachel and look forward to working with you in the future! Kind Regards, Rick Thomas and David Holmes"

While I am sure that Thomas Custom Builders (TCB) will get plenty of reviews about the quality of their work (which is excellent), I wanted to take the time to complement them on their professionalism, attention to customer service, and overall impression. Our project was a fairly major addition, with all the steps of building the whole house. The project (from initial concept to completion took about 8 months). About 4 months of that was the planning/permitting phase and about 4 months of actual construction. Rick Thomas spent the first months with us planning and working with their architect to meet our vision on paper. He was always prompt to meetings, attentive to phone calls, spent as much time as needed answering questions, and wrote a fair, complete and thorough proposal that included a detailed description of work, what the expected outcome was, start and end dates, costs. He spent a lot of time with us without charging us to come up with a ball park figure. His estimates came very close to the 'end' cost that was in the statement of work. Also detailed were total cost and payment schedules. Payments were broken down very reasonably and we only paid for work that was already completed or in process. Once work was started, we had a 'core' group of TCB people. There was always at least one TCB person here to supervise sub-contractors and TCB uses many of the same subs for their jobs. They TCB people were extremely friendly and courteous and made sure that the house was left in as livable a state as was reasonably expected at the end of each work day. Subcontractors were also polite and did their best to not disturb people. If a problem arose or a TCB person would not be there one day because they didn't have work that day (that only happened a few times), they would let us know the day before or that morning. Work was kept on schedule and if the schedule would fall behind, David would knock some heads together and get things moving again. The biggest thing is that on a project of our scale, several unexpected things or problems arose along the way and TCB did their best to resolve the situations without adding time or cost to the schedule. This was a big deal as I have worked with some contractors that if anything went wrong would not cover costs etc. TCB stayed to their original cost quotation, with the only increase coming from our change requests and the increase in cost was quoted in writing, an additional statement of work was written, and cost agreed upon before work was started. The extensive work on the statement of work, creation of and meeting the schedule, and management of costs and personnel are all things that made TCB an outstanding group to work with.

Brian and Mike arrived on time, helped me decide on the exact design of the interior wall.  I explained what I wanted, a wall to make my dining room look more like a separate room, but not totally close it in.  Their suggestions and expertise made the wall turn out exactly the way I hoped it would.  Their work was excellent, and they were very careful about cleaning the area after they were finished.  I was very pleased with the results and would hire them again.

We have been incredibly impressed with the work and professionalism of ALL of the folks from TCB.  Several things are important to us beyond a good price:  Responsiveness, professionalism, attention to detail, and schedule.  TCB exceeded our expectations on all of these points.  As with all projects we requested some change requests, these were tracked and priced by TCB with good detail and attention to the schedule.
I can't say enough about the quality of their folks.  The team that worked on our project were the same folks over the 2+ mos of our project.  They were like clockwork at our house every morning, with a smile...and cleaned up everyday.  I'll relay one story that really impressed us and speaks to TCB's customer focus....They had hired a sub to replace our garage doors.  This was an all day project that unexpectedly lasted until about 8:30 pm.  Most contractors would have just left us to look after the contractor, however TCB has a policy that there will always be one of their folks on-site, when a sub-contractor is present.  Even though TCB had to pay his guy OT on a Friday, they stayed without being asked.  I travel a good deal for my job, having peace of mind that I could have TCB's folks in my house everyday with my family was huge....these are really great guys.

Finally, TCB knew that quality and attention to detail are important to us.  They never cut corners and never hit us with price escalations and finished on-time.

TCB has my highest recommendation.  Please feel free to contact me as a reference.

Response from Thomas Custom Builders Inc

When my husband and I decided that it was time for a kitchen renovation, we didn't know what we wanted but we definitely knew who we wanted to do the project - Thomas Custom Builders. Both of my husband's brothers had used this company for major projects and recommended them highly. Plus we could see their amazing results for ourselves and we wanted our home to look that beautiful too.
Rick Thomas came to our small Arlington colonial to discuss the renovation. We wanted to expand our inadequate kitchen. Rick told us that the only way to do that was to knock down a wall. Since we didn't want to change the exterior footprint, we opted to combine the kitchen with the dining room. Of course, that was only step one. Rick recommended a wonderful kitchen designer who listened to our concerns and wishes and came up with a brilliant design. She drew up a plan and revised it when we changed our minds. Then she helped us select cabinets and hardware. This was only one of the sub-contractors and/or suppliers that Rick suggested and we were happy with all of these professionals.
The contract carefully spelled out what work would be done, the time required for each phase of the project and the cost of each element. We took things off the table and then put some of them back on the table and then added stuff that was never part of the original plan. Renovations take on a life of their own and evolve after the work begins. Thomas Custom Builders and their wonderful employees (Rick, Dave Holmes and our project foreman, Kenny Holmes) never lost patience as we stumbled through the process to our finished project. No matter what we asked for, the response was always "No problem. We can do that". If the change was substantial, Rick would send us an amendment to the contract showing the additional cost and additional time involved. Work would not commence until we agreed to the revision.
The quality of the workmanship of Thomas Custom Builders was first rate and they held all of their sub-contractors to the same high standards. Plus, Kenny was always on site when a sub-contractor was in our home. It gave us a real feeling of security to know that he was observing their work and bringing any problems to our attention. Kenny and his crew always left the work area as neat as possible when they left for the day.
So, in conclusion, Thomas Custom Builders gave us the house of our dreams. They treated us and our home with concern and respect. Thomas Custom Builders earned our gratitude with their dependability, flexibility, availability, accountability, reliability, quality workmanship and excellent communication. My husband and I would not hesitate to use them again for future renovations and we recommend Thomas Custom Builders to anyone considering a home improvement project.

Thomas Custom Builders was recommended to us by two people: a close relative and a neighbor. We saw first-hand the high quality work TCB did on those two projects, so we didn?t shop around for a contractor, we hired Rick after our first meeting with him. From the start, Rick understood the kind of end result we wanted. We felt comfortable with him, his designers, and his workmen throughout the entire process. Our crew was headed up by Brian Smith, who arrived every day on time---and Brian skillfully, thoughtfully, and cheerfully oversaw our entire project. Dave came over nearly every day to make sure Brian had all the needed resources. Brian and the crew cleaned up the work site every day. TCB removed every bit of debris from the demo of the kitchen and the shower.

We added several items to the initial scope of work---and those add-ons were handled professionally. We?d make a request, Rick would send us a change order showing the additional cost, and the work would be completed after we approved the order. Everything we added made sense to add right then---while skilled experts were on hand to see that everything was done properly. Our project stayed on track and finished exactly when Rick had initially scheduled it to finish. It took only about 4 weeks to complete our entire job. TCB has a cool on-line calendar, so we could keep track of what would be happening throughout the process. The calendar even included pictures of our project!
Every single day we would take note of something, large or small, that made us know we had the right people handling our project. We are very pleased with the results, and would highly recommend Thomas Custom Builders to anyone who?d like quality work done. We feel like we have a new house!!

They would not give me a final price on estimate. They gave me their hourly rate but didn't know how long it would take & the suggested repair sounded too extensive for the problem. That made me a little nervous so I went another route.
Response from Thomas Custom Builders Inc

"Dear Member, this is a perfect example of what seems to the home owner to be a “simple” fix. Quality contractors with many years of experience know that there could be underlying structural issues and damage that would make the job, and the cost, much more complicated. We would not give you a final price at initial viewing of your leak for several reasons. We would have had to do more investigation that may have involved some demo work to find out where the leak was coming from and what unseen damage might be present. This could have resulted in a short and easy fix, or depending on the heart of the problem, a much more complicated one. It would have been unfair to you to set a price in the consultation, then begin the work to find out you would have had to be charged more than was stated. As part of our highly rated level of customer service, we like to be very up front with our customers. We don’t like surprises any more than you do. Kind Regards, Rick and Dave"

Rick, Dave, and the guys did a fabulous job. They were always on time, professional, and meticulous in their attention to detail. It's only taken me this long to write a review because back in 2006 I didn't even know about Angie's List. Thomas Custom Builders is truly a professional organization who will give you quality. They aren't the cheapest, but if you want a home renovation or remodel that stands the test of time, they are your men!

"Dear Member, Thank you for your great review! Your review means so much more to us because even after so many years have past, you still felt strongly enough about your great experience with Thomas Custom Builders to post your review so others could benefit. We feel confident that although your smaller space might not have room for improvement anytime soon, your word of mouth referrals to friends, family and co-workers will be positive, and for that, we again thank you! Kind Regards, Rick Thomas and Dave Holmes"

The experience was just fine overall. We just decided to go with another company for the project.

Initially he didn’t give us the correct estimate, then wasn’t very responsive, so we went with a different company. He was a nice guy, but he was inaccurate with his estimate and non-responsive.
Response from Thomas Custom Builders Inc

"Dear Member, I would like to thank you for your feedback and to also take this opportunity to personally apologize for not meeting your expectations. This is a rare occurrence, and I wish we had been able to perform your project so you could experience the true reality of working with the TCB team. I see many, many clients, and each come with their own set of ideas, budgets, job sizes, cost theories, and timelines. Sometimes, it is hard to fully understand their vision as they do. For this exact reason, we produce a Preliminary Proposal (not the initial verbal idea of cost ranges at the first meeting), to use as a mutual benchmark to work from. I am saddened that we did not have the opportunity to reach this point in our discussions to allow a firm vision and cost expectation. Thank you again for your feedback. We learn from every experience. Kind regards, Rick Thomas"

We were amazed with Rick's professionalism, attention to detail, and awesome communication. He showed up at our initial meeting with huge blueprint sized drawings of our plans (we sent him PDFs of our plans prior to the meeting), and invited 4 of his subcontractors to meet us at that time as well in order to get a more accurate estimate. His subs were great and gave us many ideas that we hadn't thought of before. Rick's estimate was extremely fair, and he even recommended a few tweaks from the beginning in order to help us save money. We ended up going in another direction, but we wouldn't hesitate to contact Rick and TCB again in the future, especially based on the glowing recommendations we heard from his references.
