They were referred along with other insurance agencies on Bankrate and indicated that they could save customers hundreds of dollars if they switched over to them. I called them for a quote and after providing my personal and automobile information (including VIN number), the agent provided a quote that was actually less than my current insurance policy. Since it appeared that they were actually saving me money, I activated a policy and provided my bank account information in order to begin making payments via automatic deductions. When I received my binder, I spent some time comparing the policy to my current policy to confirm that I was actually saving money by switching to Allstate. I noticed immediately that Allstate omitted one of the coverages that was included in my current policy and realized that omission accounted for the savings. The agent left out the Mechanical Breakdown coverage, and as senior citizens, my spouse and I must have that in our coverage. About a week had passed by the time I noticed this discrepancy, and I called the Toll Free number and placed a cancellation request. The lady on the phone said that it was taken care of and I asked if I could get a confirmation number for my files. She said I would be receiving a confirmation by email but instead, I later received a confirmation thanking me for signing up for "Easy Pay.) I called back the next day and spoke to another lady who was rude but insisted that it had in fact been cancelled. I logged into my new account only to see the Easy Pay message that I had received via email the day before. I called back on a 3rd time (day 3) and was told that it would take several days for the cancellation to take effect and 5 to 7 business days in order for me to receive a partial refund. I finally received a partial refund in my bank account which was less than it would have been had they cancelled my coverage on the day that I called and requested it. I was so glad to finally have them out of my life that I did not bother complaining about being short-changed. This was early July 2013, and I thought the company was in my review mirror never to be in my life again, two days ago (September 11, 2013) more than two months later, I received separate Notices by mail from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. They were Insurance Verification Inquiries stating that Allstate has notified DMV that liability insurance for both of my vehicles has been terminated. I never did cancel my policy with my current insurance company and told them that when I called to cancel with them. If you've ever had to deal with DMV, I don't have to remind you how unpleasant they can be with all of their threats of what will happen to you if you don't comply and respond by a certain deadline. Needless to say, I had to prepare and mail two separate documents no later than September 26, 2013 in order to avoid suspension of my wife's and my driver's licenses and vehicle license plates. Based on my conversations with the slick fast talking agent who initiated my policy with Allstate, I believe their actions were taken to punish me and teach me a lesson for canceling my policy with them. Since I cancelled the policy 4 or 5 days from the time the account was opened during the first week of July, it makes no sense that I received these threatening DMV letter more than 2 months later. I will encourage anyone who will listen to avoid Allstate Insurance companies.
