Description of Work: We used Commonwealth for a few years at our previous home (we had found them on Angies List). I contacted them about 1 1/2 weeks ago to get a price for replacing the system at our new home. I received an auto-response that my message had been received and they would contact me. I have not heard anything from them.

Dear Ms. [Member Name Removed], I am just now seeing your review. First I apologize that no one ever responded to your online web lead. I am not sure why our office did not receive the information. Please know that we will look into the matter with our website provider to see what the problem could have been. If in the future you need any service it is best to call our office directly at 703-339-7739. We do value you as a customer and are saddened that you gave us an F review on Angie's List for something that could have been a technical problem. Furthermore, I did not receive notification from Angie's List that there was an F review for us. Again I will contact Angie's List to find out if it is something on there end. We have had problems with them not notifying us of reviews in the past. Sincerely, Amanda Johnson

Description of Work: We sent an email request since our a/c had ceased to work. This was on a Saturday night and they returned our call almost immediately. The owner came to our home on Saturday and was able to have it cooling again but, since our HVAC was 19 years old, we decided to have a new system installed. after choosing from the options offered, the work was completed within a few days.

I had my system checked after purchasing a home. I communicated with their office via e-mail and found them to be very helpful and responsive. I was scheduled within the week. Brian came to check the system on a Friday. It was found to have serious issues and would be in need of replacement. On Monday, they completed the new install of the furnace and related components. Happy to have heat and look forward to working with them to maintain my HVAC in the future.

I re-signed up for my annual service agreement when they were last here. That pays for them to come out in the spring and winter to check our units. They are nearby and they are locally owned by an individual. They are super good at coming out and answering a service call. They have even come out on a Sunday before, which was great. I have been able to explain the problem over the phone and they have been able to explain what to do sometimes so I could fix it myself. That is really, really nice. One time they said that I didn't have my filter pushed in far enough. They told me that over the phone. Our old service was gnarly and rusty and it wasn't working anymore so they did a good job on the installation. It was an old crappy construction grade quality and now we have a much better unit in there.

Commonwealth H&C Technician replaced the Capacitor and Start Assist. It was a very basic job involving less than 8 screws. It took 15 minutes. I knew about the obligatory $79.95 service charge (which is for the diagnosis). Commonwealth charged me $235 dollars for the capacitor and $195 dollars for the Start Assist installation. This totalled $509.95 dollars (including the diagnosis fee of $79.95). While he was installing, I searched the internet for these parts for my HVAC system and found them both for about $50. dollars total! My guess, Commonwealth gets them even cheaper. So, that means they charged me $509.95 total, minus the $79.95 service, and approximately $50. in parts, leaving $380. dollars for about 15 minutes of labor!!! I get it...we all expect to be gouged by HVAC repair, plumbing etc...but please, let's keep it within some not-so insane boundries? Are you kidding? I told the tech that his prices were rediculous and he went on to tell me about his expenses with rent, and insurance. He didn't address the pricess I showed him on my computer. Anyway, if we use some simple math, $380. dollars for 15 minutes means Commonwealth makes $1,520 an hour! I'm planning to take this to small claims. I don't know if this is the "standard" rip off price for all Capacitor replacements, but someone has got to do something! Beware of this company.

I had called 6 other AC people on Thursday to try to get our system fixed. The best anyone else could offer was Monday. Commonwealth was able to come the same evening, for an "emergency call" charge, and get us back to proper indoor temperatures before the kids went to bed. A comfortable night's sleep was completely worth the extra fee.

They are very punctual. They do give you a window of time of when they a re going to come and someone from the office will call and let you know they are on their way. They are very thorough. I am very pleased with them. Since they work with the condo where I live they do not have to wait to get into areas without the maintenance man. Their prices are comparable and they are good and accurate.

I am in charge of taking care of maintenance at my boss's house in Old Town Alexandria.I have utilized Commonwealth Cooling & Heating for a number of years for regular maintenace services on the heating and airconditioning systems at this location. The fall check also involves service to a gas hot water heater. The service has always been first class. The technicians always arrive during the time period scheduled and perform the service in a quality, professional manner. They are respectful of the property and always clean up after their work. We also call on Brian and Commonwealth any time we have had trouble with the systems and repairs have been made quickly and efficiently and at prices quoted. I also have a rental property in Springfield, Virginia and I use Commonwealth Cooling & Heating on that property as well for the Spring and Fall checks as well as any maintenance problems that might arise. They also did a fine job when I replaced my hot water heater in Springfield doing the work as estimated and within the cost quoted.

We were very impressed with their knowledge and expertise. We weren't sure what type of unit we should install and actually ended up spending less than anticipated. He explained the pros and cons of the various systems and what would make the most sense for how we were using the space and its size. Once we signed off on the work, the work was completed very quickly. A team of guys came out over multiple days to do all the work. They were very professional and cleaned up the job site at the end of every day (that was impressive). Brian, the owner, was there when the work was over to make sure we were happy with the outcome, and we were. We really appreciated the "consultative" approach we received rather than the "hard sell". We will definitely be using them again.

They insisted permits were not required but they were. They lied about that. The furnace was not installed correctly. It took six months and countless phone calls to get this resolved. I had to file complaints with the county to get him to take out the permits. I had to get the manufacturer involved to get him to fix the problems.

Response from Commonwealth Cooling & Heating LLC
We were contracted by the customer two months after installation for a problem with the heat. Upon arrival we discovered that the system was clogged with drywall dust from renovations being performed in the home and not properly sealing the return grills. We cleaned the control board and inside the furnace to the best of our abilities and gave a quote to have duct cleaning done. The customer was not interested in having this recommended service preformed. The customer said that his wife had the checkbook and that we would need to bill him for the service. Later the customer refused to pay the bill because we didn’t tell him that he needed to keep his system clean and it was our fault that the furnace was damaged from the drywall dust. The customer, after continued problems that we were unaware of, later elected to have another company come out and replace the control board. This voided all warranty with our company, as per our signed contract with the customer. We did however at the suggestion of the manufacturer go back out to shift the coil over 1 ½ “ on top of the furnace to try and correct the problems that the customer was having. After performing this work there was still no change in the air flow. Our technician check the control board that had been installed by the other company and found that the switches were not on the correct setting and this was the reason for the lack of air flow. The customer verbally and via email agreed to pay her open balance for the control board cleaning and inspection after the damage was done by drywall dust. She still has not paid that balance.

After receiving a couple of estimates from Garneski and United Air Temp (worst HVAC company ever) I called Commonwealth. I faxed over my estimate to Bryan (the owner) from Garneski. Bryan explained to me in detail what needed to be done and worked with me on the pricing. It wasn't until after hearing the numerous praises from both my uncle and cousin about Commonwealth's work that I decided to go with them. They were courteous, professional, and cleaned up every piece of their installation debris after the work was completed. I will continue to use them.

Had called another (large name) company to fix the problem. The guy was there for over 2 hours, then said he couldn't fix it because it needed several new parts that would cost $900+! Even though he couldn't fix it, I still shelled out $160 for the service call. Then I called this company! He came over right away, took a look and 20 minutes later, my furnace was fixed! Problem? A clogged hose!!! He did say that my motor would go out eventually, and couldn't say how long it would last. He gave me an estimate, that included labor. When I decided to get the part replaced (I was selling the house and thought I should), I called, they ordered it, it came in quickly, he installed it, and charged me the price he had quoted! Great company, great workers, very knowledgeable, and definitely a great bargain! I would use them again (in fact they did my spring maintenance checkup) and highly recommend them!

Spring 2006. Heat pump condenser failed... Replacement with a new unit went smoothly and all seemed lovely at the time, although the price seemed steep for a Bryant heat pump of routine type, sized for the house's cooling requirements (house is a modest tract house, not large). However in November or December 2006 during a cold heavy rain, the heat pump iced up. Indoor air handler worked fine, and heat had not stopped working, but pump outside got heavy coat of ice. When Commonwealth arrived they immediately tried to tell me I needed to have the indoor air handler replaced, argued for this, in fact. This gave me a very distrustful feeling and I didn't want them back. The next day I found a different technician with a reputation for honesty (replace units only when needed, otherwise, replace parts with proper troubleshooting analysis). His diagnosis was that the condenser and pump itself was OK, and there were no freon leaks (system still properly charged to correct amount), but two problems with parts in the unit: Freon not circulating sufficiently because the flow valve that controls freon movement in and out of the unit itself is one that is known to have a barely adequate or too narrow a fluid opening, and also the defrost timer had failed to operate normally. Icing up typically happens on cold rainy days, when either of these things fail: the defrost cycle, the freon flow, or if freon leak causes low levels of freon. Ironically, the expensive, warrantied main component of the outdoor heat pump was functional and ok... it was just other parts that had failed, though they shouldn't have so early in the heat pump's life. He also checked my indoor air handler unit carefully and it was completely functional and OK. I used indoor "emergency" heat coil for heat until heat pump repair (not as expensive on power as one would think). I would not recommend this company for heating and cooling. They charged top dollar for a unit with cheap or insufficient parts quality, and then tried to argue me into an even more expensive replacement of the indoor air handler when it was OK, and the outdoor heat pump only needed parts replacement. Furthermore for over $2000 expenditure that year, the heat pump should have been trouble-free for several years.
Description of Work: Replaced outdoor heat pump for single family house (not large). Cost was for heat pump plus labor to diagnose & replace.

Our records indicate that we have only been out to this customer two times, once for the original estimate on 4/3/2006 and once for the installation on 4/6/2006. Unfortunately that makes it difficult to offer an appropriate response to the customers concerns and complaints. We would however like to offer our apologies to the customer for their unfavorable experience with our company, and would love to have the opportunity to change their opinion of us.
