+ -1 moreI want to take a few minutes to publicly thank William and the installation team who removed and replaced our worn unit with the new Carrier unit. My wife and I find the new system heats our house so much more rapidly, and to a warmer level than the original setting. We have to reduce the settings from the earlier temperature selections. The crew arrived at 9:00 AM as promised and began work with little delay. They placed protective cloth over the walkways they planned to use, and were very careful taking the old unit out to the driveway. They installed the replacement unit, and positioned the copper lines and wires professionally and in tidy runs clamped with wire ties to keep them out of the way. They cleaned up after themselves such that it was hard to know someone had been there. I asked questions about the new and different types of equipment and I received full answers. The installers left all the equipment manuals and provided training on the programmable thermostadt they installed. Overall, very good work and I would recommend Richards to anyone who is looking for a good contractor to replace/update a home heating/cooling system.
Description of Work: The workers removed the outside compressor unit and the inside air exchange unit. They cut new ductwork to match the newer and smaller system to the existing house ductwork. They reinstalled the humidifier to the new unit and made sure it worked before they left at the end of the day. They mounted the new outside unit on a new base which they placed on a bed of stones I provided to further elevate. They replaced the existing programmable thermostadt with a new and more capable unit.

water heater repair
+ -1 moreOur 5 year old Ruud power vent water heater stopped working Friday night (ECO failure). According to our research and after speaking with various contractors were advised that is an expensive, difficult, and not advised repair. Due to the structure of our home, we needed to replace it with another power vent water heater. A tankless solution was considered; however, the time involved for meeting a sales repre., reviewing proposals, obtaining permits, cost, etc. to install one at this time was not feasilbe as we did not want to wait that long in the middle of winter. After some research, we found that Bradford White was a far superior brand of water heater than the brand we had before. We contacted three different vendors for proposals for this brand and, similiar to when our home air conditioning unit went out last summer at the start of a major heat wave, Richard's came in with the best price ($1,000 less than the competitors!) and the best delivery/installation time. We were very pleased with the work and the new water heater has been working wonderfully!
Description of Work: Our 5 year old Ruud power vent, 50 gallon water heater stopped working Friday night (ECO failure) and was replaced with a Bradford White power vent 50 gallon water heater. Richard's staff (two gentlemen) arrived when scheduled, finished the work within 3 hours (involved some work to the vent piping since the new unit is not as tall as the old model), professionally, cleaned up well after themselves and hauled off the old water heater.

I was able to save over $2500.00 due to them taking the time upfront to present the economics of standard vs high efficiency furnaces, and in the end I got a Carrier Infinity system installed that provides both performance and value. The install crew was punctual, respectful of my home, and when they left, you couldn't even tell they were there. I would highly recommend this service provider to anyone.

+ -1 moreRichards Heating & A/C was very sensitive to the fact that nearly all of the homes on our street were flooded and we all needed new furnaces and A/C units. +They were extremely responsive (next day service) considering the flood situation. +The project manager came on site and ensured the work was scoped and started off properly. In my case, they replaced an old supply plenum after they had installed the entire furnace and duct work already causing additional re-work and time spent. Awesome and responsive to my needs! +They seem to have the best prices for Carrier units since that is all they carry as a sole source provider. +The onsite team was friendly and very respectful of our living space and time. I left them alone to do their work while I was at the office. They called me when it was done and they asked to lock and leave the house if I did not need to see them. CONS: +Their service plans don't seem very good though. They have a 3-tiered service plan and of course the "Cadillac" plan is the only one that includes any cleaning of the condenser (the fan unit outside). I think M.E. Flow has a better and cheaper service plan.
Description of Work: They replaced my furnace/blower, all of the duct work (return and supply plenums) and the outside condenser. They even re-routed my condensate pump line so that it drains into my utility sink underneath the drywall. They finished the work in less than two days! They tested the system and then showed me how it works. They even showed me how they had made a more logical layout of the gas line, humidifier, and return duct for servicing and cleaning. The entire system was thoughtfully laid out as every home is different. It was apparent the crew that helped me had likely installed systems in dozens of homes. This was perhaps one of the best contractor services I have ever hired. Prompt, courteous, responsive, customer is always right attitude (very rare these days). Well done!

He was very honest and actually told me it would be a waste of our money to install two heat pumps when I thought we would need both. As soon as the contract was signed, they installed the unit within two days despite the massive heat wave going on at the time. The install team was quick and professional and they cleaned up their mess. I would recommend this company to anyone!

+ -1 moreGreat experience. Sales rep helped us get the $1000 limited time credit offered by the manufacturer. Installed the entire system in a few hours. The field crew that was sent to the house was very professional an courteous. They hauled off the old unit and explained how to use the new control panel. Got an error message on the panel after about 7 months. Called the phone number that showed up on the panel late one night and was told that I would get a call about setting up an appointment to find out what caused the error message. Got a call 1st thing the next morning to set up an appointment for the same day. The tech came out, showed me exactly what was wrong and how to prevent/fix it in the future. Excellent service and the company is a local & family owned business which is always nice.

+ -1 moreIn terms of overall grade, other guys caught a bunch of stuff that Richards never pointed out. They are pretty responsive when I call. I do not know whether I would be using their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I use the services of Richards Heating & Air Conditioning Co. They do our service as we have a service plan with them. The last time they were out was a month and a half or two months ago. I spent around $100 for the work done.

The only problem we had was that they removed and threw away a perfectly good, almost new Honeywell thermostat which we had planned to put elsewhere. They installed the Carrier thermostat that came with the new heat pump etc. It was partly our fault for missing the information on the contract, but we were sorry to lose a perfectly serviceable thermostat, worth over $100. New unit works well and is as described. Will see how the heating does in the winter as we have only tried the A/C so far. We have used Richards for several years and find them reliable.

+ -1 moreOur old a/c unit died Monday afternoon.....at the start of a major heatwave...a couple days before my elderly mother was due in town....five days before leaving for vacation..... Our contracted service provider's "best" price was $700 higher than Richard's and the "best" installation date was the Monday after our vacation departure - NOT acceptable at all considering the circumstances. Tuesday morning at opening time, I spoke with Richard Smith who was very kind, informative with our options and patient with our concerns/questions. Of the three bids we solicited, Richards came in with the best price and installation delivery time. Wednesday morning, a crew of two men were waiting prior to 8:30am and by 2:30pm, we were up and running. Everything has been working wonderfully since then - great job! :-)

The technician that came to install the new water heater was on time, laid down protection for the hardwood floors, installed the new unit quickly, and cleaned up thoroughly after the installation. He also was thorough in explaining the operation of the new water heater and took all the time that was necessary to respond to my questions.

+ -1 moreRichards performed the annual air conditioning inspection (they also perform an annual furnace inspection for us). There was a part that was worn out and required replacement. The whole process took no more than a half hour.
Description of Work: My father used Richards Heating and Air Conditioning Company years ago to install central air conditioning and a new gas furnace in our home. He signed a long term contract with them, and when he passed on and I inherited the house, I continued that contract. During the years, Richards has always been very prompt, professional, courteous, and has done good work. Whether for routine maintenance or emergency repairs, they have been consistently excellent in my family's experience.

Description of Work: I used Richards twice. Once last year for a new Carrier heating and cooling system for our upstairs and more recently to have them look at our downstairs air conditioner. They did a pretty good quote but after during the install they did not put in a duct that was long enough to reach the new air conditioner so I had an unairconditioned room and the air conditioner blowing cold air into my attic. The intsall guys did not tell me that the duct line was too short or tell me that I needed a follow up to intsall a new duct line. I had to call the company and have a technician come out and tell me that the duct was too short. It then took them almost a week to come out and install a new duct line. The owner actually came and fixed it, but at that point I was pretty ticked off that I spent $7,000 for a new system only to not have it done correctly. They did give me a pretty decent quote however compared to the other companies who wanted much more. The second time I had Richards come out and I got a really crummy tech guy who barely looked at the system only to tell me that I needed a new air conditioner. I paid $125 for that pleasure and really wished I would have argued that charge.

Description of Work: Water heater pilot would not stay on - air intake to the heater combustion chamber was cleaned from the outside but unit failed again a couple days later. Richards returned at no additional charge and took the chamber apart and cleaned it inside and out. Unit has been working fine since the second visit. Richards installed a new Carrier central air system 2008 and a new Carrier furnace a couple years prior to that. I have always been statisfied with thier work. My only negative comment would pertain to price which a think may be a bit above average. However, I have always been willing to pay more than the lowest bid if warranted by the quality. For this reason, I have continued to return to Richards for my heating, air-conditioning and water heater installation and service.
