Description of Work: Examined camera for free, determined it was unrepairable. We found a new, and better, camera there at a price that was competitive to what we could have bought it for online.

See above- did not go well!
Description of Work: I was steered in the wrong direction for a camera that was not what I wanted. I tried to return it but they convinced me to keep it for awhile longer. I still did not like this camera. When I tried to return it again they wanted double the restocking fee. I got them to call the owner but only after I requested this. The manager wanted me to come back when the owner would be there. Not great customer service and the manager was rude. Finally we got the transaction completed, but it was not pleasant. I like to patronize local businesses. But, I was not happy with this shop.

They have a high-end setup where you upload the photo file(s) yourself and choose your own options. The printer is in the back so you can't see whether it's anything special, but the prints I received seem perfect. Officially the print prices are quite a bit higher if the staff sets them up for you, but the staff member in the store helped me through it and charged the self-service price. Overall I like this store -- it's the only independent photo store anywhere nearby and the people in the store know their business. Unfortunately, reality is that prices for larger items are higher than online, so I go there mostly for accessories and occasional printing for special photos I want to frame. In general, if you want good advice and the personal touch and don't mind paying a bit more for it, consider Dominion Camera.
Description of Work: Made nice 8 x 10 prints of a family photo we had done by a friend who is a professional photographer.

Description of Work: I inherited an old slide projector and some un-developed roll film. I took both to Dominion. They evaluated the slide projector for free and the cost to repair it was not worth doing. They developed the film and recovered as many photographs as possible. I was very pleased with the service for both the slide projector and the film.

The salesman took the camera out of the box and said he wasn't allowed to put a battery in. I was astonished --- I'd called in advance to make sure they carried the item I wanted to see, and now they weren't going to demonstrate it for me ! The manager reluctantly agreed to power it up, provided I didn't release the shutter. Then neither the salesman nor the manager knew anything about the camera (and quot;it's a new item for usand quot;) and so couldn't demonstrate it or answer questions. Finally, they were charging full list price for the camera. They were rude rather than apologetic, a poor experience and complete waste of my driving time. This was one of my worst service experiences I've had in Virginia (I moved here a year ago). It's topped only by the time I ordered a sundae in a NOVA restaurant and was charged EXTRA for the ice cream.
Description of Work: Went in to look at a high-end, mirror-less digital camera. Dominion carries the item, but was unwilling and unable to demonstrate it !

On 4/26 I tried to return the fisheye lens to Dominion Camera and they refused to take it back, stating that it was purchased on 4/13 and that their return policy requires that items be retuened within 10 days. I explained my conversation with their employee on 4/13 and that he agreed that I can return it as soon as I had an appropriate replacement from Amazon. They would not hear of it and forced me to take a gift certificate. I would prefer to have a refund, as I intend to have nothing more to do with a store that does not have the best interest of its customers in mind. And it gets even stranger. I was dealing with two lower level employees, one of whom admitted that he did not understand why I was sold the fisheye lens for theater work and the other who admitted that he was not authorized to make an exception to hteir return policy. The owner of the store was in the shop and heard most of the discussion, and came over to comment that the lens was custom ordered for me and was therefore not returnable. I responded that 4/13 was the first time I was in the shop and that the lens came from his shelf, I ordered nothing. One of the other employees agreed with me that the lens came from the store shelf. He walked away and did not get involved in the discussion ( I was polite, but made it clear that I was not happy) It was obviousr that the problem was not resolved, but he occupied himself with busywork and when another customer came in, rather than passing that customer over to one of his two employee sso he could deal with the issue that only he could resolve, he chose to ignore it. So I took the gift certificate and left in disgust. By the way, both of the lenses from Amazon cost about $150 each and are very highly rated for the type of work I intend to do. Amazon has a 30 day return policy, so I will need to return the 1st lens soon. Just for grins, I looked up the price of the fisheye lens sold to me by Dominion Camera and found that the Amazon price was $32 for the identical item, about 40% of the $80 I paid at Dominion. In principle, I do not mind paying more - I understand that independent retailers do not have the volume and the buying power of retailers like Amazon, but this markup of more than double seemed excessive. When I mentioned this just before leaving, I was told that the fisheye lens on Amazon was probably a grey market product. I doubt it, the item had the identical markings and it is not a camera or a fancy mechanical lens - we are talking about a hunk of glass a metal ring and some threads. If you are an amateur, do not go to this bunch for advice. They may try to sell you what they can even though it clearly is not what you need. Who needs a headache like this? If you are not an amateur I would advise that you do a lot of homework before visiting so that you know what you want and how much it supposed to cost. You don't need these headaches either.
Description of Work: I came looking for 4 items for my digital Canon Vixia HG20 camcorder, which has a 37 mm ring diameter.. 1. a Canon replacement battery,. I was not interested in a off brand, having had one in the past that broke after a few months. 2. a Canon battery charger for above battery. Again, I wanted a Canon, not an off-brand. 3. a Canon or a Rode directional microphone for above camcorder. I knew that the Rode was better, but the Canon would be good enough for me. 4. A wide angle lens suitable for filming theater with my camcorder from the first row in the audience. I did not expect that this be a Canon product. I explained that I was an amateur and that I was looking for him to help me choose an appropriate lens. I gave him a ballpark figure of under $200 or so as my budget. The salesman I spoke to acknowledged that they did not have any of those items, on hand. That was disappointing, but OK, since I knew that the shop specialized in still photography, not in video photography. He then found something and proceeded to sell me an off brand fisheye 43mm lens for $80, saying that it will do the theater filming I described. I believed him. However, when I took the lens home, I discovered that it distorted the edges of the image, making them curved. I then did some research and discovered that is what fisheye lenses to do. It was completely unsuitable for making videos of theater - everytime the actors walked to the edge of the stage, the image would be bent by the lens and the actors would look curved. Why did he sell me this? Could he have been frustarated that he did not have a single item to sell me, so he did the best he could even though it was inappriopriate? Is the the way a professional should treat an amateur that asks for advice? I called back immediately, saying that I needed to return the lens he sold me and that I would do so as soon as I got a proper replacement from Amazon. He said that that was fine. I ordered a lensthe same day using the 43mm specification of the lens that he sold me. When the Canon WD-H43mm 0.7x wide angle converter lens arrived, it would not fit on my camera. That is when I noted that my Canon Vixia had a 37 mm thread in front, and that no way was it possible for a 43 mm thread to fit on a camera with a 37 mm thread. I cannot explain how the lens with the 43 mm thread they sold me fit - they must have used an adapter. So I ordered yet another replacement from Amazon and received, the Canon WD-H37II 0.7x wide conversion lens for 37 mm filter diameter optimized for high definition camcorders a few days later, on 4/25/2011. When I tested it I found that the lens was great - it fit perfectly. This is when I ran into trouble with Dominion Camera.

Why did I bother to give them my phone numbers! They never called me then made delivery promises that never happened. Needless to say, I will never use them again.
Description of Work: Paid for a $25.00 diagnosis with a quote to repair within 3 weeks. Called after 3 weeks and camera was never even looked at. Was told the next day it would be evaluated. Again I called a few days later only to be told that the repairs would cost $75.00 and would be ready the next day before 2pm. I arrived at the store near noon the next day to be told the camera still had not been looked at. I was not happy.

They were right up front with us in saying that it probably wasn't going to be fixable, but if we wanted to invest the money and if it wasn't fixable we could put that money toward another camera and they would give us a store credit. They were pretty honest. It was unfortunate that it was one of the repairs that they thought the part was going to be way too expensive to make it worthwhile to repair. I didn't consider anybody else. The experience went well. It is like a mom and pop camera shop. You can pretty much guarantee that they know what they are talking about from personal experience.

What we did not know was that there was a battery in the camera that was dead and the gentleman who handled the camera appeared to know what he was talking about. He handled the camera well and said that they needed to send it to Florida to have the shutter repaired. So in the end we spent money just to have a battery replaced.
Description of Work: My wife had a 25-year-old 30-mm traditional film camera and the shutter would not open to take a picture anymore and we took it to Dominion.

I dropped off the negatives/pictures on a Monday and I picked them up on Thursday (they were officially ready on Wednesday). These were meant for a special gift and all three reproductions turned out great!
Description of Work: I had an old 35mm photo negative that I wanted developed as a 5x7 and wanted some touch-up work to remove some of the "garrish" effects of fluorescent lighting in the picture. Also wanted copies and enlargements made from two photo prints for which I did not have negatives: a 4x6 copied to a 5x7 and a 3x5 copied to a 4x6.

Very well. They spent time with us discussing the cost of repair vs. the cost of a new, more modern camera. They didn't push us to buy a camera then and there and they did a good job of saving the tape that was trapped and damaged inside the camera.
Description of Work: Evaluated damaged three year-old JVC VH-C video camera for possible repairs. Helped us decide that the camera was a total loss. Extracted trapped tape from the camera and transfered contents to DVD.

Dominion Camera and Photo Lab was the only camera shop that was willing to do this service. They made it possible for my son to take my camera to Europe with him. We were very happy with their work. The price was very good, as well.
Description of Work: They cleaned the lens of my digital camera. I needed this done so that my son could take it on a trip with him. They did this on site.
