CertaPro Painters of Arlington did a fantastic job on the outside of our house. First they are extremely responsive, detail-oriented, and specific. Steven Choi, the owner, came out and inspected the house, taking lots of pictures, and gave us a detailed estimate. He is super knowledgeable and answered our many, complicated questions easily.
The paint on our house was in very bad shape. The CertaPro estimate was SLIGHTLY higher than some others--and less than some. The agreement for the job was also detailed, stating exactly what would be done. The job was scheduled quickly. Yeong-Min Choi, who is the liaison once the contract is signed, was amazingly responsive and right on top of everything. We added some work after the contract was signed, and there was no problem with that process. The crew and their leader were great -- extremely careful with our house and checking in with us every step of the way to be sure we were satisfied. They showed us the colors on the house before doing large amounts of work.
Unfortunately, I had picked one color that was one shade too light, and they worked with us seamlessly to have the paint store re-mix without wasting the paint. FABULOUS cooperation. They finished the job right on time, and on budget. Really, the job could not have gone better (except if I'd chosen the right paint color to begin with!). CertaPro is a big company but this franchise is locally owned and operated, and of course the crew is local. Working with them was like working with the best next-door neighbor you ever had.
We did have one problem in that the painters did begin work with a power-washer, there was some blame pushed around but the issue was resolved to our satisfaction in that our warranty was extended for a few months (to insure there was no damage or parts would have been replaced) and the worker who didn't thoroughly read the work order came to our home to apologize on his own time.
Nine moths later, no damage was done from the power washer and the work looks great. The team doing the work was punctual and professional and they were incredibly neat by containing the entire work-space in plastic. I recommend Certa Pro and will use them again.
I would highly recommend again and would probably use them for another big job and would encourage anyone hiring them to take advantage of their desire to get your job done the way you want it.
Our garage door panels (original 1928 door) were not quite done to my satisfaction but, after I mentioned it, the panels were worked on and finished to look like new.
Our front porch iron railings (original 1928) were terribly rusted, peeling, and even in several places crooked. Oscar and his crew scraped all the paint and rust off, down to the original iron, then primed and painted. The railings look new, and the paint should last because it is now on solid iron instead of on rust and peeling paint.
I recommend without hesitation!
The good: Again, CertaPro reps could not have been easier to work with. The job was scheduled promptly , and the workmen were both punctual and as neat as could reasonably be expected. The prep work was exceptional.
The not so good: At first glance, the painting itself looked good, considering that it was still drying . However, upon closer inspection, there were a couple of areas that were missed - somewhat disconcerting as there were supposed to be two coats - smudges/drips/splatter, and some trim work was a bit dodgy. Frankly, I attribute this primarily to an attempt by the workmen to work through the day without lunch, and the paint was not drying quickly. CertaPro came back to address the problems initially found (ceiling / door / selected wall areas). However, considering the price, while the quality of the prep work was an "A", the painting itself would be closer to a "C".
"Hi [member name removed]. We at CertaPro Painters take our customer comments and concerns VERY seriously. We are dismayed to find that although you appreciated our service, you were not pleased with our painting despite a follow-up visit by our painter. Might you let us know what is still "not right" with our produced work? We would be more than happy to take the necessary steps to correct any technical issues with our work, put a smile back on everyone's face (or at least on my face), and to regain your faith in CertaPro. Please contact our office at your earliest convenience!"
Saturday came and no one showed up at the designated time. At 1230pm I called and the oeprator stated that the they should have been there and then tried to reach the estimator (after putting me on hold). She came back online and said that she left a message and would call me back as soon as she found out what was going on. At 1 pm I called back to figure out what the deal was. The new operator put me on hold again and then came back after a bit and told me the story that their online reservation system didn't seem to transmit the reservation to the scheduler/estimator and as such we would have to reschedule. She then attempted to explain that this wasn't the company's fault. I explained that reasonably it was, as I did my due diligence and reserved online, recieved a confirmation. I then called the business a few days before hand to verify that the reservation was still on and they stated that I was all set. As such, I explained, that a reasonable person (even if it's a technology error) could conclude that the business is at fault for missing a reservation. She then did another reservation for me, but not until twoweeks from now. I stated that I am expecting the company to apologize and make this right (a discount or something that would keep me as a customer) before signing any contract.....I am more than willing to change this review if the company honors their commitment to excellence.
UPDATE 11/9/2012: After the franchise owners saw the above, they quickly stepped up to the plate and called me to express their sincere apologies. Seems appointments are scheduled by a central call center that is not under the direction of the franchises. They expressed their frustration with what happened and the co-owner was quickly dispatched to my house on 'my time' to do a full and complete estimate. Steven was extraordinarily detailed in his estimate. complete with pictures and a 3-4 page full write up of expectations, notes, and extras that we discussed during his estimate. He even went the extra mile to educate us on paint and gave us recommendations on colors. We decided to go with them, NOT Because they were cheaper than other estimates (which they were not), but rather because the proposal was so incredibly detailed, that it left no room for error on their part. In addition, his partner and co-owner was meticulous in her follow-up and communication. because of the foul up on the schedulers part, they also offered a discount on their proposal.
The painting project manager was named Eduardo and I cannot express my appreciation for his detailed work. He arrived exactly on time every day and the work was not only meticulous, but so was the cleanup (not a DROP of paint where it should not be). He also strongly suggested some extra trim work that the original contractors who reconstructed the room had left out.
We will certainly use them again! However, I do have to keep a C on responsiveness (moved up from an F) due to their central call center. Seems some retraining is in order.....
"We want to thank the Customer for giving us the opportunity to paint for you despite your initial experience with us and our scheduling system. We at CertaPro Painters work very hard to earn the trust and confidence of our customers. We hope that after experiencing our detailed and customized proposal for your project with Steven Choi and having experienced the attention to detail to deliver what we stated in our proposal by our job site supervisor, Eduardo, that we have earned you both as customers for life. We look forward to talking to you soon for your next painting project. Thank you again for giving us a chance to show you how we work, what we can deliver and who we are. Your reviews and comments are important to us. We are working with IT and our call center to improve our scheduling and customer response process. Thank for your choosing CertaPro Painters! Steven and Yeong-Min Choi Owners, CertaPro Painters of Arlington 6201 Leesburg Pike, Suite 301, Falls Church, VA 22044"
Steven Choi is the owner of the business which is a franchised with CertaPro Painters. My comments apply to Mr. Choi, not the franchising firm. I know almost nothing about the franchising firm. Mr. Choi's workmen did excellent work. They made minor repairs to the drywall. They carefully scraped and repaired the surfaces to be painted before applying paint. They applied paint with brushes instead of rollers. The resulting work is more uniform than painting done with rollers. They installed new heating vents.
Mr. Choi uses nine crews. Some crews apply paint with rollers. Mr. Choi charges lower prices for roller-applied paint than the brush applied paint.
I live out of state. Mr. Choi telephoned me while he examined my house. We discussed the problems related to the existing carpentry and drywall while he was looking at the house. We discussed what he recommended doing about them. He prepared a detailed description of the proposed work.
The house is a rental property. I wanted beige walls. Mr. Choi selected the exact color after considering the effects of daylight when the largest room was used. He is very knowledgeable.
Mr. Choi's communication skills are excellent. He explained all of the details in terms that I could understand.
There were no surprises when the work was compete.
