Merrifield Garden Center - Fair Oaks

The thing that I liked most was that the work was done well. They did everything that I asked them to do but the communication was very poor. I had to work with Tomasene and he did not respond to e-mails. I sent him a full e-mail with a layout of all the pieces of the project that needed to be done and he showed up on the morning of the work, which by the way was very hard to schedule with them. He didn't have a clue as to what I actually expected him to do because he apparently never read the e-mail that I sent him. The communications with the foreman who actually did the project on the site was hard because he didn't speak English very well. It was hard for me to tell him how I wanted things to be done and he couldn't explain to me as why things needed to be done in a particular manner and he kind of got frustrated with me. The plus side was that they worked out cheaper than a lot of other places and the work was completed relatively quickly. One of the things that I had communicated to them in my e-mail was the removal of a holly bush in the middle of my backyard. He never removed the bush and has not contacted me on when they are going to remove it. We are withholding the final payment on the project until they actually do remove it. I would use them again but I wouldn't like to work with Tomasene. In fact, I did use them again on a separate project. They were so poor and inattentive on the landscaping, but they did an electrical project and they have an electrician who was phenomenal. He came out and was very responsive. He was quick and responded to all my e-mails. We communicated clearly. His people who worked on site were smart and clean and they did their work so well. I don't feel bad about the whole company because it obviously looks like it is just Tom and the people who work with him that don't work well.

they have a fee of $75 to come out and give estimate or somwhat of an idea or design however they charge more to put anything down on paper. I agreed to have them do it as $75 is supposed to be re-applied later when you use them towards materials. It was a nice idea, however they don't keep budget in mind at all. I would have appreciated if they worked with me to do a stepwise approach, but it seemed to be more all or none. I didn't get any follow up from them and it was difficult to get in touch in the first place. They have not done work - I may reach out one more time (so I don't completely lose my money) to see if they can do a part of it, but I think I'm the one at a loss here.

It went well. Their service was excellent. They were puncutal, quick and neat.

I contacted Merrifield thru their website and was contacted by Sharon Ross within 2 days. I received a questionaire to fill out and had an appointment in early April. I spent time with Sharon outside talking about different plants and the look I wanted and she stood there and sketched a design with the names of all of the plants. She also did a sketch of an area in my backyard that I have decided to do at a later time. She was able to give me a ballpark price for all areas on the spot and also websites where I could go and check out the plants she listed to see if I liked them.
It took me about a month to hire Sharon for two reasons; I was kept waiting for a design plan by another landscaper that I contacted the same time as Sharon and with all of the heavy rains we had in April there were some water issues in my basement that had to be dealt with first. The June time frame worked for me perfectly and had my water issues taken care of the week before. The job took almost 2 days and Sharon was here twice the first day and once the second to check on things. My husband and I were able to question Sharon about plant care and she gave us tips on pruning some bushes we were able to keep, her knowledge is endless. The main reasons I hired Sharon was her design plan, her passion for her job,her landscaping knowledge and her detail to colors used in the plantings with regards to the color of my house and my bluestone walkway. She split and reused all of my liriope and took into account the many deer that roam our neighborhood. It was fun working with Sharon and she told us if we had any gardening questions to contact her which we feel extremely comfortable in doing so.

They did the design and implemented that design for us. They gave us advice and options on which trees would do best in the location we were having it planted and also which flowers and other shrubs would do well in that area. They did all the work in one day and it is beautiful. They gave us all the information and advice we would need on watering and upkeep and everything still looks great. We really liked them.

Merrifield is very responsive. Although the lawn service price seemed a bit high, I would select them in the future because I am convinced of their quality based on their service and information they gave during the quote process.

They did a design that was too expensive. They came back and gave us other designs and told us how much it would cost in phases, so that was helpful for us. When they put forth the first plan, we felt it was more than what we wanted to spend at the time. They brought ideas to the table, but they were willing to be flexible with them. Their employees were capable, professional, and pleasant.

I had wanted them to come earlier to do planting, but it took them several weeks to get here. I am working with a person who has about 40 years of experience. He is the best person that I have found that knows about plants and how to deal with deer problems and other problems. I have interviewed a lot of people, and he seemed to have had the most knowledge. I don’t know how the rest of his staff is like. I have already used them twice, and I am planning on using them again.

Excellent. We were greeted by Alan and he stayed with us until we made our decisions, helped us sort through heavy stones, and even loaded the truck. It was a quick in and out and we got exactly what we wanted. Overall it was a very pleasant and informative experience. Exceptional service.

They were great. They had very good reviews on top of an amazing architecture and they came through on it. They were professional. They did great work at all of our needs which guaranteed that they were a solid company. They backed us up great. They were comparable to the other estimates that we had got. Their price was slightly above the market value, from what we saw.

We have dealt with them a lot. They are great but are really expensive. They are great if we just want to putter around and buy a few things, but their quotes are breathtaking. They are very convenient and are probably the only ones who provide this service in the area. We are in an urban environment, and they are in the middle of it, so they have got a monopoly. We may have to go 25 to 30 miles in terrible traffic to the next place.

It went very well. The plan they drew up for us was perfect and really addressed the top issues we cared about. We had looked at about 5 or 6 other companies and their plan definitely paid the most attention to our wants. They started on time, were responsive to our concerns, did not nickle and dime us for everything, and were very communicative and flexible. They finished within the expected amount of time and didn't go over budget.

Great. After all this time I still have one of the best looking yards in my neighborhood. I always get compliments. The quality and experience of Merrifield can't be beat.

We scheduled and appointment with the arborist, Seth. He was very prompt for his appointment. We discussed what we thought needed to be done. He made some very good suggestions and we signed the contract. The work was done as scheduled. All aspects of out experience was very professional

Tom Wallerich came to our house. We told him we were interested in landscape design, and afterwards a contractor to carry out the work. He told us that a design would cost $250. We agreed, and he asked us what we wanted the yard to look like. After we spoke, He measured the yard, took photographs, and returned several weeks later with a design and an estimate for doing the work (around $50K). The design was useful to us in clarifying our own ideas, and worth the modest cost, but he cannot have spent much time on it--we wouldn't expect him to for $250--and it was not well tailored to our needs. For that, we will have to be more precise about what we want, then prepare to pay a designer for the time necessary to understand our needs and work out a plan consistent with them. We will consider Merrifield for the construction work itself.

over the yard was much improved by the work merrifield did. they still seem to be the most knowledgeable in the area about the appropriate native plants that will work in this region. they come out and survey the area, provide a design, and then give an accurate cost estimate as to what it will take to complete the job. one day, you come home from work, and the yard is transformed. we have had some shrubs die on us several times - they have an excellent warranty program but at the same time it is frustrating to have be continually calling back to redo work that has already been completed.

Overall it went very well. They did quality work.

The price they quoted us was $14,000 and we thought that they were way overpriced. The person that came out and gave us the quote was lovely. The problem was that she did not understand what we wanted to have done and was more interested in designing something that was fun and cute versus what we really needed. We worked with them before and we had them do our front yard.

They are really great! So helpful! And EVERYONE there is extremely friendly and helpful. Kevin assisted me and he was fantastic. He also helped me have plants transferred from another location. He followed up and made sure I received everything as promised.

ok. trees were very heavy and I had to have 2 men help lift them. Planted in ground quite easily. Trees are blooming now.

Great experience, very professional, though on certain things they can be more expensive. Would use them again (and have!), nice that they have everything in a single place.

I get supplies from them. I am one of their customers. They are very professional. It is a very neat and enjoyable place to go. I always enjoy going there. I have been to both their locations a dozen times each. I haven’t been there since two years, as the landscaping work at my home is now completed. They are not the cheapest, but they have great quality. They helped me pick up plants. They are definitely a premier garden center. I will use them again in the future.

The advice of the salesman was completely consistent with that of an unbiased County arborist, and the tree planting was done well, within a few days after purchasing the tree.
