I selected Joe Cox, based on his Angie's List reviews, to complete upgrades on a recently purchased single family home in Fairfax, VA.
Joe was very quick to return my initial call and flexible in scheduling an on-site estimate. He was exactly on time for the appointment and was very thorough in asking me about my intended project. Within a day, he had provided me a detailed, written estimate. While working, he kept me updated and informed every step of the way. When finished, the work areas were spotless. The work was completed on time and the final cost was as estimated.
The best word to describe Joe Cox is craftsman. His work is detailed and well planned. He radiates competence and expertise.
I will be using Joe Cox again in the future for my other projects.

Everything went really well. He didn’t charge too much; I thought the price was reasonable for what he did.

It was a pleasure to work with Joe and we would highly recommend him. The drywall repair came out beautifully, as did the installation of the outlet box. After we primed and painted there is no indication that the drywall had ever been redone. He did the repair in stages over a few days to make sure we had the highest quality results. Joe's attention to detail made for great results. He also cut out the back of our specially ordered vanity to fit around the plumbing from the wall. It came out perfect. We were very happy with the entire experience and will definitely call him back for future jobs.

This guy is obviously very experienced, and fixed things that you would normally need a specialitst for. He is the best handyman I've had in 25 years. His demonstrated competence and reliability are so much better than anyone else's.

Joe did a great job. I?m very happy with the quality of his work and his responsiveness. Based solely upon my experience with Joe, I would use him again.
However, my neighbor had a bad experience with Joe. I witnessed a heated dispute between Joe and my neighbor over the price of the materials. Later, my neighbor told me that Joe did not speak to her in a professional manner and that he overcharged her for the work.
Joe told me that her charged my neighbor a premium price because the project involved a lot of dirty work. My neighbor had the opportunity to get other estimates, but she chose not to do so. Joe also stated that my neighbor tried to change the price of the contract after the work was already completed and paid for. Joe acknowledged that he got upset after she accused him of lying about the type/cost of materials that he used.
With that said, I would be reluctant to hire Joe out of respect to my neighbor who is a good friend. It is less complicated to find another carpenter. If my neighbor wasn't an issue, I would probably hire Joe again. The moral of the story is that homeowners should always get more than 1 estimate and then make sure the contract clearly describes the type of materials expected to complete the work.

Response from JOE COX CONSTRUCTION & HANDYMAN
"Regarding my customers comments about her neighbor, I never said that I " over charged "her, I told her that I charged a premium price to remove her severely rotted siding and install new. The neighbor was one of those instances where you cannot do enough to please them and if you check my other reviews you will see the care I take with my customers."

Joe was on time, helpful, efficient and entirely reliable. I had spent a small fortune having this bookcase custom made, and he was extremely careful with it as he did his work. He cleaned up behind himself and left everything in pristine condition. I would not hesitate to use him again.

I called Joe after reading positive reviews on Angies List and was not disappointed. Joe was courteous, punctual, professional, and quick--from first contact on the phone through the final point of the project. He provided helpful initial designs and was receptive to ideas from us, too. We would work with him again, without question.

Joe did a great job on the project. On the day that I initially called he came a gave a very competitive estimate. He was very punctual and professional, showing up on time and finishing the job at about in half a day. He has a great attention to detal; for example, the corner looks great. He was careful not to scuff the walls which we had just painted. We'll be using his services again in the future.

Joe Cox Construction and Handyman is exactly the type of small business that Angie's List was established to highlight. A quick read of the website and its many reports from very satisfied customers demonstrated that he was exactly the type of contractor we were looking for. I don't recall ever seeing an Angie's List service provider with the glowing reviews that appear for Joe Cox Construction. Now that the work is complete, we can say unequivocally that Joe Cox is a master at his trade and a truely special person. He returned our first call within a matter of minutes of leaving a message requesting that he phone to discuss our needs. He arrived at our home later that day on his way home to discuss the myriad of small projects that we had identified. He described his approach to the work and how he would intend to handle each assignment. The next day he provided a verbal estimate and an anticipated start date in about 7-10 days. Within a few days, he brought us the written estimate and contract which was exactly as he had described verbally. The work began a couple of days later and, as he had indicated, took about 1 1/2 days to complete. Joe arrived on the date we had agreed and at the precise moment he said he would arrive at our home. He treated our home as if it were his own. He did each of the jobs quickly and efficiently. The quality of each job was exceptional and in many respects the result was "better than new". We are so thankful for Angie's List and its customers for pointing out Joe Cox to us. He will be the first and only call we ever make when we need a a master craftsman/handyman again. I is truely a pleasure to recommend him if others ever need the services he provides. .

Joe did a great job. He gave us an estimate explaining everything he would do, when he would do it, and how much it would cost. He kept us informed by phone often and was a great communicator. He was a quick worker and did an excellent job.

I was very happy with the crown molding that was installed. Joe arrived on time, was professional and friendly. Provided me a free estimate and brought a sample of the molding that he recommended. I called to schedule for the work to be done and it was easy to get a date and time established. One area of my ceiling was fairly uneven so I was concerned about how that would look after the molding was installed. Joe explained how he would deal with that area and it didn't cause a problem. It's been a couple weeks since the installation and I've just painted the molding. The end result was very nice.

Joe returned my first call within a couple of hours and he actually stopped by my house to give me an estimate on his way home from a job that same day! He carefully looked over the problem area around the door to determine where and how water was probably getting in and rotting the door jamb. He explained how he could fix the problem and gave me an estimate. I phoned him back to schedule a time for the repair. As a courtesy, Joe checked in with us the night before the appointment. He arrived right on time, got to work, and completed the job to our great satisfaction. As agreed earlier, he also brought a ladder in order to check out and caulk a window that had been leaking. Before he left, I asked Joe to look at a few other items on our "list." Just as before, Joe gave me a fair price, called the night before, and arrived right on time. In each case, Joe protected my floor area with large sheets of cardboard and he cleaned up the area when finished. Some of the repair jobs may have been small ones, but it's a nice feeling to have these issues resolved. Joe is very responsive, courteous, and professional. He certainly seems to know what he's doing and works skillfully and efficiently. Thanks to Angie's List, we found Joe Cox!

He returned my call within an hour. He tried to call my home phone and then cell phone to reach me. When I told him that we could go ahead with the work, he stopped by my house on his way back home. He was very responsive. He told me that a good percentage of his business was from the Angie's List recommendations. He tried to be responsive because he knew that the callers would try different service providers and hence he jumped on it. He seemed to know what he was doing and he was honest. He had a great sense of humour and seemed to use every minute to do his work. So far he has been great. I have already asked him to check on something else as well and see if he could fix it. He would be charging me $300. The jamb could take some time if it required cutting it out or replacing a piece to fix it. He would be putting a new weather stripping for me and doing some re-corking around the door. But I think it was really worth it as my husband could not do. I thought he gave me a honest figure for his time and the materials. I have painted the door but he would repaint it. I am not sure if the price was too much or too little. I just wanted the work to be done. He was neat as he covered everything that needed to be covered and was very careful with certain things. He was not wearing a suit but was very professional in terms of other things like calling me ahead of time, responsiveness and wanting to do the work. He has stepped out to get a cup of coffee as he has kept something for drying. He said that he would be back in half an hour and that is when he would be back.

Joe responded promptly to my call for an estimate and provided the estimate within 24 hours. He was very helpful in suggesting the type of wood to use and agreed to paint the gate as well, even though he normally does not do painting. My work was scheduled within a week and was finished as promised. I am very pleased with the work done and highly recommend Joe.

Joe Cox did a great job! He answered the phone when I called and came out to give a free estimate within a day or two. Less than a week later he returned on a Sunday morning to fit us into his busy schedule at the exact time he said he would arrive. He worked quickly and the door came out great. He is very pleasant and knowledgeable. It's so nice to have a fence door that works! There were only two small negatives. One, we thought the price was a little high. But he did tell me in advance that he has a minimum charge to come out and the job was fairly small so if I had any other very small jobs to add, he would throw them in at no charge. So I asked him to rehang a single board that had fallen off our fence. He did that without a problem. He also said that he walked around the fence and hammered in any loose boards. We certainly appreciated that. The other small negative was that he had to replace two boards on the fence door and he did not stain them to match the rest of the wood (which we recently had power-washed and stained). I just assumed he would do that as part of the job, but did not specifically request that he do it. (We will pick up some stain and finish the job ourselves.) Overall, the two small negatives did not affect our opinion of Joe. He was friendly, approachable, and he did the job quickly and with high quality. We would definitely recommend him to friends and would use him again.
