After calling Joe for an estimate he kept me up to date on his timing being very considerate of my time so that I didn't wait for him.
Was available the next week for the job. Was on time, cleaned up, protected surroundings.  Very polite and personable.

We are looking forward to his return for other jobs needed around our home.  All in all a fantastic experience.  He is a keeper!

very pleased to find an honest handyman and a person who is punctual and know what he is doing  Work was performed at my son's home and I paid for the job since the doors were a gift and we did not know how to install them.

Joe's an upfront guy with what he is going to do, when he's going to do it and how much it's going to cost.  Never had an issue, he completed all the work as he described and charges a fair rate for his time.  I plan on using his services again.

Joe is a marvelous craftsman who prides himself in perfection.
I needed to build a  section of a wall first prior to building a cabinet in my kitchen.  This is where Joe comes in.  Joe first  put up the frame-studs in order for electricians to lay the wiring.  Once the electricians were finished with wiring, Joe made four separate trips to put up the drywall and sand down the joint compound.  He even used water sponge, instead of sand paper, to control the dust.
Perhaps most importantly, Joe does absolute phenomenal work.  Not only is he courteous and always on time, but he also does safe repair work.  I cannot recommend him more.

This professional is a talented carpenter who does effective, safe repair work.  I had numerous projects--and the finished product on each one exceeded expectations while being more value priced than expected.  As I prepare my house for sale, and prepare to move, Joe Cox has been a key element to successful progress, and become a trusted agent.  After having some lighting fixtures added to the basement (by an electrician), the drop ceiling collapsed.  Joe was able to repair the problem completely, while improving the overall strength of the drop ceiling, all within my short time frames to prepare for a house inspection!  He suggested a clever, effective solution for a stairwell gap (too much space under a bannister -- a danger for children), which more than fixed the problem, and cost less than expected.  Joe replaced four interior doors, adjusting appropriately for this 35+ year old house -- they look very simply perfect.  His attention to detail is meticulous, and he is a trusted advisor for suggestions on repairs -- often suggesting lesser cost options when they will ensure the quality and safety I need.  He is extremely clean, leaving no traces of his work, other than the completed product. His work to conceal some pipes in the basement was exemplary -- excellent carpentry work that covered unsightly pipes blends in so well with the existing wall the work is all but invisible.  Can you tell I just keep using him for all my long-overdue projects??  He's that good.  Joe Cox is a classic example of why Angie's List works so well.  He's busy, but still works with my schedule.  A true find.

Joe promptly replied to our call. He was very accomodating to our schedule when setting up an appointment to come and see our job needs. His estimate was prompt and reasonable. On the morning of the job, he arrived early, worked hard, and cleaned up all evidence of the work. He was friendly and courteous. The end product was superior. We definitely plan to call Joe again for other jobs we have.

I was disappointed that Joe couldn't help me because he came so highly recommended. It seems he gets a lot of calls and can pick and choose with whom he works.
Response from JOE COX CONSTRUCTION & HANDYMAN
"It appears the only people that have a problem with me are the one's that I refuse to work for. If I called this Lady back 20 minutes later( and I really don't remember talking to her )it was because upon further consideration I felt it was better to decline the job.Saving both of us time by refusing the job seems to me to be the professional thing to do. I try to help everyone that calls me but being a one man company limits me and in hindsight I feel I made absolutely the correct decision in this case."

Excellent workmanship, punctual, neat, communicative, considerate and fair priced,   Had to purchase own doors, knobs & locks, but he procured the other hardware and showed us how to get the doors  knobs we wanted quickly.  Adhered to quote.  Unfortunately, he had to back out of replacing exterior doors -- not sure why but I'd hire him again.

Joe is extremely pleasant and reliable.  He always responds to calls and shows up promptly when he schedules an appointment. He honors his estimates and his prices are fair. While there are some "handyman" tasks he won't undertake (for instance painting), he does an excellent job with everything he agrees to do.  He knows how to solve many minor household problems.  Most importantly, he is an expert craftsman whose carpentry skills are commendable.  We get many compliments on the crown molding he intalled and we are as pleased as anyone could be with the fireplace surround and bookshelves he designed and built after we asked for his suggestions on improving an ugly mantlepiece.  Highly recommended!

After the visit, the following day, he gave the estimate over the phone and asked that we pick out a trim to give an accurate estimate. This is quite understandable. However, several days later, I  called him and informed him that we will be deciding on a trim  that day, but wanted to  I see a GENERAL breakdown in writing/email of how he came about prices. i.e (10 windows, 11 doors, etc). I didn't need details. just a sentence or two of price breakdown as to compare. Also, it was not to nickel and dime him or to remove aspects of the job, but it was to compare against others and make note to ourselves on how much material would cost etc. He stated that he doesn?t break down prices and this is his way of doing things and how he's always done them in the past. Also, he doesn?t give measurements etc because then some other contractor may use his measurements. I found this to be interesting because, why would another contractor use his measurements. Why wouldn?t any contractor do their own measurements? I didn?t wantto argue with him, so left it at that.He then continued to state that  it took him several hours to calculate the estimate he gave me over the phone. So I said well then, that means he has these notes somewhere and he can give me a GENERAL breakdown of the price. He kept coming up with various excuses. While I was speaking, he kept telling me to ?let me finish?.? Several times, and did not let me interject.   He then said he also can?t give breakdown because we didn?t chose trim style. So then I told him, how about we use the ?sanitary? style as the reference (because that?s the style he used to come up with the stimate)   He then said, that he still can?t break it down. That?s not how he does it. He just gives one figure/number and you can assume Its about 50/50 between labor and material.  I then decided to email him thank him for his time and that we will take a different route. He then emailed stating exactly what he stated on the phone, it was the exact same sentence, just 5 different ways and extremely repetiive and confusing. Did not clarify anything. He seems to not like to hear the customer?s perspective and does things only his way. Which is fine if works for him and other customers. Not for us. I can only imagine if this is the frustrating process early on, how it will be if we did have issues later on. I am not here to bad mouth him. I am sure he does great quality work. I am just sharing my experience, because I believe that is what Angie?s list is about. I am paying to hear honest reviews.     I?m sure he will reference his glowing reviews, it still does not mean that I have to agree with the way he goes about things. I have never heard of a company not being able to provide a general breakdown and WRITTEN estimate. It leads me to believe that if we had an issue it would be a debate. I frankly don?t have the time or energy to go through that.
Response from JOE COX CONSTRUCTION & HANDYMAN
"This customer called me for an estimate and I came and spent over an hour with them helping them decide how things should be done and explaining how trim is done- how you can replace door slabs only or the entire frame etc.-I then spent considerable time compiling a list for the estimate without final decisions being made. I have had similar situations where incorrect info was used and confusion came soon after this and this is why I would not proceed without final decisions being made. This customer had several projects going on at the time of my estimate with contractors working in the house already. My reluctance at breaking down an incorrect list for them was due to my feeling that I was being used without the benefit of a contract and to go further would be unwise. I try to help all my potential customers as much as I can but her insistance on a breakdown seemed suspect to me. I e-mailed her to say that I understood her decision completly and wished her luck with her project.I would point anyone with questions about me to my reviews of people I have done business with as an accurate guage of my quality of work and as a business man."

Overall, working with Joe has been fantastic! He's a truly honest and forthright guy and an excellent carpenter and handyman. He has innovative solutions to difficult problems. He's very clear about what he's best at and what are his weaknesses (and may be a better fit for another company or handyman).

For the first job described above, I had never done much remodeling or work with a handyman (I'm a relatively new homeowner), and Joe made me feel really comfortable with entrusting my home repair to him. I usually book 3-4 estimates - Joe was the first estimate that came to see me. After meeting with him, I immediately canceled the others (which I wouldn't recommend that most people do). I had a great gut feeling about working with Joe, which worked out really well. We met again and walked through all of the work that he would do, and he drew up a contract. Joe had some innovative ideas, for example, I had hoped that he would be able to replace the ceiling tiles in my basement, as they were drooping from recent water damage. However, he showed me why this was impossible, but then suggested nailing them up, which worked out just as well (we already had the water damage problem taken care of). We stayed in contact throughout the next couple days while he was completing the work, which was great. When the work was completed, it was all excellent quality work, particularly the carpentry work.

For the second job, I was hoping to get a source of water damage in the basement fixed (getting an old basement door replaced and getting the frame caulked and puttied to keep out water - old door frame was full of holes), and also added in a toekick repair in the kitchen that was rotted away. This went really well and the quality of the door was fantastic.

For the third job, I had mentioned to Joe much earlier that I needed to close up the deck hole. He quoted me a price and I thought I'd check to see if any decking companies could come close that price. He very explicitly said that the majority of the price was for materials, as a good number of boards had to be replaced on my deck to cover up this previous hot tub hole. I checked with one other company and the price was double Joe's quoted price, so I decided to go with him again, knowing that he's a great carpenter and would do a great job. You just have to see the photos to see the work that he did - the level of craftsmanship is amazing, and I much preferred working with Joe over a large decking company that would probably do something wrong.

In short, Joe is the best person to go to if you're looking for a trustworthy and honest handyman. I plan on working with him in the future, and am looking forward to it.

Originally contacted to replace drywall on bulk head in kitchen/sunroom, install baseboards in sitting room in basement, extend a wall in kitchen, and repair rotted wood on second floor bay window. Agreed to perform the first two items. Added two more projects--replacement of crown moulding in basement sitting room and construction of built-in entertainment unit and bookcases. We are very pleased with the end result (especially the built-in entertainment unit) and would definitely contact Joe for future projects. (Oh, one thing you should know--Joe does not paint. We painted the drywall, baseboards, crown moulding, and entertainment unit. Not a big deal for us, but it should be noted...)

All went very well from start to finish.  Joe responded to initial call same evening and set appointment to estimate the projects; he was very responsive and informative and provided ideas and solutions to the problem areas we had.  We were very pleased with his approach; he was detailed as to what he would do to take care of each of our areas of concern.  Joe was great to work with, and we would definitely contact him again.
