After having consultations and designs presented by 3 different companies, we chose Mark due to his initial professionalism, design quality, and guaranteed speed and efficiency. Despite his price being at LEAST 10% more than the other companies, we felt as though the added cost would equal better quality workmanship and professionalism for such an extensive home project. WE WERE WRONG!!! The project was contracted with HOA to take 6 weeks, and to date, the project has taken 9 weeks, and yet to be completed. This is not due to permits or paperwork; this is lack of communication and poor workmanship that continues to be avoided by Mark. I was fortunate enough to be present for overseeing the daily work, as Mark is completely absent from the worksite. I caught problem after problem in regards to incorrect materials ordered, design changes that were not discussed, the large dirt pile his team dumped on “common grounds” within the community, and the concrete his team left in the backyard covered by dirt. We leave countless messages with Mark’s secretary, and rarely are called back. When he does make contact, it is through email to avoid being told about another fault in the construction of our home addition. Yesterday he scheduled an appointment for a pre-final walk through to discuss our concerns, and never SHOWED nor CALLED. The frustration and stress Mark Shriner has caused us led me to write this review. We spent a significant amount of money on a project that has caused us stress and regret. I would NEVER recommend Distinctive Deck Designs by Mark Shriner.
I was really excited about doing business with them, but sadly - I'm going to move on and find another company to build my porch for me.
"I did provide pricing for a Deck remodel and a New Porch, my company had all intentions of bulding this for [member name removed]. [member name removed] was out of town for over month and the scheduling did become a challenge. I do not agree with [member name removed] thougths on my company being rated an F, especially when no services were performed and no money was exchanged. My company requires a 10% deposit, which [member name removed] never forwarded to me and my company. I asked that Angies List members review and evaluate all the very positive ratings from Member and non members whom have rated Distinctive Deck Designs as excellent. Thanks for your time. - Mark took the time to meet with me and my wife on separate occasions to help make us both comfortable working with him.
- Mark had some very creative ideas that fit very well with our concept of what we wanted
- Mark was clear in his communication and always responsive (and patient) with our questions
- Mark uses one team that is very efficient and I was very impressed with how quickly they progressed
- Mark and the crew leader communicated during the process to keep me posted as a couple unpredictable issues came up
- Mark worked with me and was open to my input ( I was being indecisive about a couple things) as things progressed
- In the end there were NO surprises and Mark stayed true to everything he said he would
I was slow to write this review, but I'm glad because I get to tell you about what just happened. They installed my deck in late February when the weather was cold. Now that it's summer some of the wood has expanded in the heat, and the screen door was sticking.
I emailed Mark and he had someone come by within a couple days to fix it.
Mark does quality work and he stands behind it. I would not hesitate to recommend him and his crew.
Overall, we couldn't be happier with how the new patio turned out and we would highly recommend his company to everybody.

"Once again the Angies List Report card comes back with Poor grades from persons who choose not to do business with my company. I really feel that this type of a report should be given no weight and not even show up. I personally spent over 8 hours working for and providing this customer with Free drawings, Samples, Designs and Pricing. No Calls or commitments or the customers part, no interest other than their own personal gain, at my expense. I must say, I have been building Decks for 20 years and I can tell when a customer is interested in having a project done. We concentrate our time on serious customers, not shoppers just wanting Free designs and not willing to have a little skin in the game."
"She is correct, she wasnt even home, didnt want to be home, Just wanted a contractor to visit her home and provide a Free Estimate for the work she wanted done. Most Customer who are serious about getting the job done by a professional would want to be part of the Estimate and more importantly to meet the owner of the contracting company. This customer was neither. I provided a Detailed Written estimate of the work they requested and sent to them via email. Our pricing is far from expensive, just read some of the reviews on Angie's List from Customers whom we have completed work for. I really do not think that Angie's list should allow Customers whom do not use Contractor to submit inquires, it just does'nt seem fair. The Deck in Question was old and worn out and had safety concerns. As I professional, I advised replacement of the Deck, this is what needs done to be done properly. We are professionals and very nice to deal with as she noted, we provide free inspections and free estimates with a no cost or obligation from the owner. If putting a band- aid on her deck is what she wants, we are not the company for her, we do top shelf work and have Hundreds of very satisfied customers year in and year out. I wish her luck with her project."
