A Smith & Keene van tried to run me off the road (I was on a bicycle).  The driver was obnoxious: beeping the horn, yelling obscenities out the window and driving recklessly; I feared for my life.  We were in a low traffic, nearly deserted area in the middle of the day (it was not rush hour).  I called the complaint number on their website but the voice mailbox was nearly full; I was only able to record a brief complaint.  No one ever called me back to address it.
There's a whole section on their website that talks about establishing trust and building relationships; I doubt any of this is true.  To build to respect you have to give respect, to current and future customers.  Anyone operating in the service industry has to recognize that everyone in their community is a potential customer.  Smith & Keene obviously does not understand this.  They disrespected me; I would never trust them to do anything.
There are a ton of good HVAC contractors in the Hampton Roads area; don't waste your time on this one.

The service was fine. The furnace would not fire up and I suspected the igniter had failed. I called Smith and Keene who sent a technician the next day. He opened the furnace, saw that the existing igniter was dead and replaced it with one he had on his truck. Total repair time - about twenty minutes. Then he presented me with the bill. $90 for the service call and $262 for the igniter. I paid the bill under protest and resolved to contact the S&K office to correct what HAD to be an error because this igniter is a common generic part that can be bought for $20-30 just about anywhere. I did so. To make a long story short, I got no satisfaction and was told this 1000% markup OVER RETAIL value was not an error and that I just did not understand business. Actually I do and would not have objected to a 100% markup but not 1000%. This amounted to a $200 OVERCHARGE on a routine service call. I will not do business with Smith and Keene again.

Smith and Keene was contracted through Balance Builders to install HVAC in our home three years ago.  The home is separated into two areas, the main home and an in-law suite.  The home was built very tight using spray foam insulation and r-49 in the attic.  This should make the sizing of the HVAC equipment less than what you would expect it to be.
Smith and Keene installed a 1.5 ton A/C in the 360 sqft in-law suite.  We knew this would be a problem from day one because that unit is way too large for the space and would cause major humidity issues.  We were told that the unit was sized right over and over.  Three years later and we are still having the same problems.  The unit runs for 3-4 minutes at a time, the humidity inside the space stays at about 70% and there is an indoor air quality issue.  Smith and Keene would have you believe that this is OK and there is nothing they can do.  Not one person from Smith and Keene has been to our house to look at the problem.  The person that lives in that suite has severe breathing issues and COPD, yet Smith and Keene have no response.
Do not trust the big name here, they do not stand behind their work.

Smith and Keene came out and hanged my fans the way I asked them to, added security lights on our property and fixed some switches. They always do great work.

I have a special needs son that cannot control his body temperature, so it was really important that we get that done, so that my son could be comfortable. It was great. They did a fantastic job. They were much less expensive than everybody else. I was really thrilled with how they helped us. The only incident we had, we have  a dog in the backyard and so things got kind of busy toward the end because I am sure they were trying to hurry and wrap it up, but they walked on the carpet that went to the upstairs to get to the attic and put a little bit of mud, some grass and debris. After they vacuumed it up, it was still stained. So they hired someone to come back and steam clean the stairs for us. That cleaned it just fine. I think it was an oversight because of them trying to wrap up things really quickly. They fixed the problem and I really appreciated their service. It was very reasonable. It was great, my heating and air conditioning is still working quite well. We called and they were out to do the repairs in a timely fashion, just a couple of days or maybe not even that much. We didn't have to wait to long because I have a special needs son and he was a priority for us. It took them 2 days I think to do the work. They were very professional.

I've used them before and had a good experience.  There were no problems this time either.  They were on time, did a good job and the water heater has been operating properly.
