Removed a window Air Conditioner that was installed with no intention of being removed! All went well, except they did not put down any protective covering on the rug in the area. About 2 pints of old dirty water spilled out onto the rug, but they worked diligently to clean it up. If you didn't know it had happened you would not notice it on the rug.
He tightened up some outdoor flood lights that had become loose. He checked the other set, just to make sure. Also, he repaired a downspout that had detached. A very clever repair that has worked perfectly since he did it.
Overall the work was completed satisfactorily.
Thanks to power washing, the exterior of my house really sparkled during the holidays.
I've already talked to Ryan Services about doing other maintenance and repair projects at my home this year.
It was a really good deal since the loose gutter would have become a much larger problem.
I am very pleased with the good service
"Dear [removed member name]: I do not appreciate you mentioning a 'FAMILY EMERGENCY' as an EXCUSE!!!! You have NO idea about Kevin's family medical issues of his two remaining brothers ( one had brain cancer and has now sinced past on ). At the time of the " scheduling " I had mentioned to you that Kevin was on a job near Moyock and that he could not be pulled off the job."
"This customer had purchased a Big Deal coupon for $69 x 2. She had originally wanted us to install ceiling fans which take approx 45 to 1 hr per fan to install plus several light fixtures. The coupon clearly stated 2 hrs for 1 man 1 hr for 2 men which Mr. Ryan had ( himself and a helper ) so that would be 2 hrs of work, correct! We had to charge extra per electrical install and the customer could not grasp what I was talking about! ;If you had read THE COUPON correctly and had listened to the estimated time allotted per item she would of been able to calculate the amount of items with the 2 hr time limit. Thank you for reading!"
The bottom line is that the service was never used. Could not coordinate the schedules. The repair person canceled 3 times, twice due to illness. After the third time, I did not want them in my house. May be a lot of good reasons, but I just did not feel comfortable with them in the house after this experience.
My biggest complaint involved the communication with his office (his wife, I believe). I bought a special deal offered by Angie's list. I had no choice as to who was sent to my condo, but trusted Angie to send me a reputable Handyman. I am a widow and am not handy around the house, so need handyman help. My deceased husband could do anything and everything handyman related!
I called Ryan's Repair Services to schedule a date after getting the confirmation from Angie's list. We discussed the jobs I had on my list and the parts that would be involved. I already had the 2 door handles. I was told to e-mail pictures of what I had currently in my shower and so they would know what to replace them with. I did that right away.
But, my scheduled date was cancelled due to a storm and then was put off because he had "contracts" that took him to the outer banks for 3 weeks. So, my work was considered a lesser contract that could be set aside?
Two days prior (yes, only 2 days) to the rescheduled date, the office notified me that he would NOT have the shower parts and I would need to get them. The whole reason I was hiring someone to replace the fixtures in my shower was because I did not know how to do it nor did I know what parts would be needed or where to get them.
Finding the proper shower valve cover proved to be extremely difficult, as it was a Kohler part and the valve was a size that nobody carried any longer - including the Kohler company! We wound up having to reschedule again because I was going to have to order that part and wait 3 weeks for delivery (This was finally resolved after I ran around for 2 days to 3 hardware stores, a plumbing store and a trip to a wholesaler's address Ryan's Repair Services gave me - that turned out to be a distribution warehouse only for contractors - not a showroom for Joe Public ). Guess I thought part of any Handyman service would include coming out to survey the jobs that are to be done and determine what parts would be required. This was NOT done. If I was required to get these unknown parts ahead of time, I obviously needed more than 2 days notice! NOT professional!
I had a rescheduled date of December 21st. Their office emailed me that week and wanted to reschedule but made it sound like it was my idea! Again, NOT professional!
Finally, December 31st rolled around - the day Kevin was to come out and finally get started on the job list! I made arrangements to get off work early to meet him there. Two hours before the scheduled time, I get an e-mail at my work place from his office telling me he will be cutting his work time short because of an unexpected arrival of family members of his wife. What?! Again, UNPROFESSIONAL! Another irritation was that he arrived earlier than the arranged time, causing my mother to have to let him.
Okay - now to Kevin's actual visit on December 31, 2012: He installed the doorbell - great! One of the door handles gave him a problem, so much so that he had to call the manufacturer's Customer Service center. He argued with them about what he had and then abruptly hung up on them. He obviously figured out they had been right all along and it was he who was misunderstanding! Then the handle was installed properly.
He replaced the shower head only in my shower (not the valve), as the discontinued valve part had not come in yet.... He went into my shower wearing his shoes without putting anything down on the shower floor first. After doing the work, he then stepped out onto my white bath mat..... (as a result, it is no longer completely white - now it has a really nice partial footprint!)
The cabinet door hinge I had purchased turned out to be the wrong part (he would have known this had he come out and surveyed the job ahead of time!) But in the meantime, he placed my cabinet door on my glass cooktop and proceeded to use his drill on the cabinet door - Using a drill on my glass cooktop?! What?!!
Turns out this hinge is no longer carried in the local hardware stores now either! Had to order from the manufacturer. The good thing is the hinge is under warranty and there was no charge but I did have to wait a month for the correct part to come in! A sympathetic handy friend replaced the hinge for me. Kevin Ryan was willing to return and complete the 4 hours I had purchased, but I was so disgusted with how the whole thing happened, I said no thanks. So this deal turned out not to be such a great deal.
One more note - the van did not speak well for this business either - don't know what the inside looked like, but the outside was badly banged up, rusty and even his sign had seen better days - pretty sad looking. Not a good impression for any future business with other condo owners in my building.
Would NOT recommend this company.
"Dear [member name removed]: I am sorry you feel that way. As stated in the Angie's List Big Deal stipulations it clearly states that the customer is to have ALL NECESSARY MATERIALS TO COMPLETE JOB. It is NOT our responsibility to purchase and SHOP for your materials. He was in the Outerbanks, which is North Carolina. And yes, that job takes precidence over any other jobs coming in as it is a SIGNED CONTRACT. We cannot sway from the dates. I am sorry you do not understand. Perhaps you should of had the necessary materials needed to complete your job prior to purchasing and scheduling your COUPON BIG DEAL. Take care and God Bless. RYAN'S REPAIR SERVICES, LLC"
The first job was replacing the mortar and securing the wrought iron railing. The job was messy, Ryan and one assistant worked to replace the missing mortar. Unfortunately, a lot of the mortar ended up on top of the bricks and not between the bricks. It looks terrible and the mortar that got between the bricks is, at the time of this review, cracked. Additionally, the wrought iron railing wobbles as bad as it did before.
However, when installing the "Grab Bars" in the shower, the area around them got scratched.
It is unfortunate that neither of us knew anything about mortar work, perhaps we may have known not to let just anyone do that job. But, I did not expect the walls of the shower to get scratches.
