They could not come out to service my AC the same day, as they were booked, but they were prompt answering my message and giving me a clear timeline as to when they'd be able to come out. I did not use them, but will definitively consider in the future.

The company had a real human being who answered my call after-hours, and the admin office contacted me as soon as they opened. Though Mannix's primary business is HVAC and installing water heaters, the company owner, Jerry Mannix, came to our home to determine whether a replacement was warranted. Our toddler was eating a meal when Mr. Mannix arrived, and things were fixed before the little one had finished his waffle and milk! The Mannix team just showed our family that integrity - above all else - can still be found in everyday business. Instead of selling us a system, the team empowered us by teaching us better troubleshooting steps, signs for when the water heater's condition merits replacement, and most of all, how to fish for ourselves. We have an unrelated repair requirement with our HVAC system, and Mannix was who we will turn to first.
Description of Work: Mannix Heating and Cooling LLC just came to our rescue by assessing our termpermental, name brand 75 gallon water heater at the end of its 6-year warranty period and whether it required replacement.

GREAT company and I will definately use them for all my HVAC needs.
Description of Work: Once again, SUPERIOR service from this company. I used Mannix last year for an AC problem and was totally impressed with them. Called them again this year for another AC problem and continue to be impressed. I had wanted to request the same technician that came to my house the first time, but it's the middle of summer, my AC was out and they were busy so I just took the first appointment I could get. Got a different technician and he was just as great. The people in the office are very nice, informative, and responsive and the technician's answer all my questions.

I will and have recommend Mannix to anyone who needs AC/furnace sales or maintenance. Our AC went out and after spending $1000 to get it "fixed" it went out again three days later. The same company who charged me $1000 then told me that I now needed a new AC unit. They also wouldnt be able to install a new unit for me until a week later. At the time, it was 90+ degrees outside and I had just had surgery. I called Mannix and explained my situation. They had the owner of the company - Jerry Mannix - out the same day to go over the AC options. He also explained that he could have the unit installed two days later. He patiently went over all of the options with us and helped us choose a model that fit within our budget. We set up the install time for two days later. Instead of being one of those companies that state they will call you between the hours of 9am and 5pm and make you waste an entire day - they gave me an exact time - and were on time!!! They had three people come in and install the AC unit. The installers were extremely polite and had the AC up and running within three hours. From the person who answered the phone, to the sales department, to the installatoin people - everyone was kind, helpful, and courteous. This is the best company I have ever worked with regarding home appliances. I would and will recommend them to anyone who needs their servies. You wont be disappointed!!!

The sales rep and service technician were punctual, knowledgable and personable. They discussed options with us and did not engage in hard sell tactics which we greatly appreciated. The tech spent considerable time assessing and testing the system and explained the results each step of the way. While the team explained the benefits of a new high energy system they did not attempt to strong arm us into purchasing now. We will utilize the maintenance services for which we contracted every six months and repair service as necessary. We will replace our system, though we are uncertain as to when. What we do know is that Mannix will be the company from which we make that purchase and we heartily recommend them to others.
Description of Work: We had Mannix come to inspect and assess the HVAC system in our newly purchased but 12 year old home. Our home inspector had identified some issues that were mitigated by the seller and were not dealbreakers. However, we wanted a second opinion by a pro working exclusively in the field and we wanted to price an annual service contract. We were pleased with the inspection/assessment and contracted for annual service. We also requested and received an estimate to replace the system with a newer and more energy efficient service. We purchased a new thermostat and have not yet made a final decision with respect to a replacement system as the costs of moving into a house and turning it into your own home are significant.

I can't say enough good things about this company and all of the individuals who work for them. In the middle of the worst two day heat wave so far this year, I had one of our two air conditioning units fail. I called Mannix first thing on a Thursday and left a message. While waiting for a return call, I continued to call other service providers and booked a service call with another provider who said they could come out that afternoon and fix the problem. BIG mistake, in fact a HUGE MISTAKE because while the other provider could come out and in fact did come out, they would only diagnose the problem and then wanted me to book another service call for the freon leak test the following day. Needless to say, I was livid about that. I also found out later that the prices they would have charged me for the same work that Mannix performed with their exceptional service, would have cost me about $375 more than Mannix charged me. The moral of this story is that just because someone else may get there quicker (as in the middle of a very busy heat wave period), it doesn't mean you will get good service. Back to Mannix. I called back on Friday morning at 8am, explained my problem and the service history to date and Mannix was only able to put me on standby for a service call for Friday, and also promised that if they did not get to me, they would get to me for certain by Monday. At 10am Mannix called me back to see if I was still at the house, because they had a technician available. Certainly a far better outlook that I could have hoped for given how busy everyone was during this heat wave. Bob their technician arrived shortly thereafter, we discussed the overall symptoms and he went straight to work, and when coming inside was careful to put on the "booties" to cover his shoes to keep my carpets clean. The freon test did not turn up any obvious leaks, and we discussed a higher pressure leak test option, but given the history and age of my A/C units, I opted to just go for a freon recharge on the failed unit. Bob was meticulous in the charge, checking temperatures of both inside controllers, and charged both the failed unit as well as my other unit. He then carefully tested both units outside, and since I had gone out to see how things were going, carefully explained what he was checking and why. He then came back inside to properly tape over the work area in the unit in the attic and also checked return air temperature and coil temperatures to ensure that everything was working properly. About 90 minutes or so after he arrived, the work was completed. It was only when we sorted out the payment, that I found out Bob was one of their field supervisors. Unlike many supervisors and managers I've known in the past, this man was happy to roll up his sleeves and dive in, and I'm hear to tell you that my attic probably qualified as a sauna in the heat today. I'd like to give a well deserved shout out to all of you at Mannix who helped me out, Celeste, Sara, and Bob... !! I'll close by saying that you guys have won me over, and when I need other A/C or furnace work done, or if I need to replace anything, you guys get the business, period!

I'm thrilled with my HVAC and water heater. The installation went off almost without a hitch while I was working that day. When I came home from work, the installation was complete. Jerry even had the installers add a cold-air return at no additional charge to ensure the HVAC had balanced air flow from throughout the house. The only small hitch in the installation was that the water heater was turned too much toward the back wall of my utility room to be able to see the temperature dial. I was told this was done to make it easier to remove and install the furnace filter, which presumably would have been more difficult to do if the water heater were facing front and center because of the tight fit in my utility room. With one call, one of Jerry's installers came out a couple of days later and made an installation adjustment so everything is just right now.
Description of Work: Mannix Heating and Cooling removed and replaced my old, worn-out water heater, gas furnace and air conditioner with all new, top-of-the-line AO Smith (water heater) and Carrier (hybrid gas/heat pump furnace and A/C unit) equipment. I was unsure about buying the hybrid heat pump/AC vs. just a gas furnace/AC combo, but Jerry Mannix helped me to decide in favor of the hybrid heat pump.

Evening of June 11, we smelled odor of burnt or melted parts coming from HVAC vents. Mannix was able to come out the next afternoon and diagnosed. They recommended replacing a capacitor in the blower motor, explaining that the motor was simply working too hard because of the disabled capacitor. In the event that didn't work, replace the motor. I accepted the recommendation, they repaced the capacitor, and the system has been working fine since then.

There are a handful of companies that are often held up as the example of what excellent service should reflect. Simply stated, Mannix should be amongst those top tier service companies. The employees are professional, knowledgeable and quite responsive. After a series of very poor experiences with other HVAC companies, Mannix saved the day for me, literally. In the midst of a 90+ degree heat wave in early spring, with no A/C, Mannix came to my rescue. Jerry came to my home, immediately triaged the issue, gave me a very competitive cost estimate, and without prompting, even went so far as to seek to identify options to save me a few hundred dollars on a new a/c install. The work was professionally and successfully completed the very next day. Very happy customer within 24 hours of my initial distress call. Simply amazing! Thanks Mannix! I look forward to future maintenance appointments.

Came home late on the hottest day of the year to realize that the AC no longer was working. Cold called Mannix at 11pm and left a message. Came out promptly to give me an estimate, and work could have been done the week I agreed to use the company. The old and new units had to be maneuvered thru the limited space in my condo to and from my balcony. They covered the carpeting and got everything in and out without bumping into anything and cleaned up afterward. The only drawback was workers could have been a little more communicative - left to do something or take a break for 15 mins. and they also left without saying the job was done so was waiting for someone to come back to formally say job was done and ask if I had any questions or show me how to set new thermostat. (Had left front door and balcony door unlocked for them to come and go.)

The process of converting to natural gas fuel took about three months, due to various steps that have to be taken involving Washington Gas, permitting from the state, and Washington Gas subcontractors. Jerry Mannix helped me fill out the various forms required by Washington Gas to start the conversion and scheduled work at our house promptly as each approval or inspections was passed. Bob and Lupe did a great job on the inside gas line installations, with amazingly minimal cuts to the walls and ceilings, and leaving everything clean when they were done. There were some challenges along the way that were handled in a positive manner. Everyone was responsive and easy to work with. I will use them for all our HVAC maintenance needs, too.

Fantastic! I am very pleased with my experience. I have dealt with many contractors and have never had such a satisfying experience. For the intial meeting Jerry was able to work with my schedule and meet late in the evening. At the meeting he provided a lot of information and at no point tried to "sell me". Ultimately I went with a higher end high efficiency unit. The install occurred one week after our initial meeting as scheduled. The install was flawless. Everything looks so neat and tidy, no wires were left unfastened and all the gas/water plumbing lines were organized and secured. This is a major compliment from me, I have frustrated many contractors insisting that things look just so.

My wife and I were out of town for the weekend. When we came home the air conditioning unit was not cooling the house. I checked the outside unit to find the fan was not working. I searched Angie's List to find a service/repair place and came across Mannix Heating & Cooling. As a result of their positive ratings, and their professional response to a recent not so positive rating I decided to give them a call. I call them at 8:00 a.m. and they promptly returned my call at 8:03 a.m. The lady said she could have someone out to my house that afternoon. I received a 30 minute pre-call from Mannix, and shortly there after Dan showed up. Within about an hour he troubleshooted and repaired my system. He explained in detail everything he was did. And in the end it turned out to be a dual capacitor and fuse replacement. Which was great news as I feared far worse. He then helped me understand proper preventive maintenance for the system, and how to better force air upstairs. This guy is great at what he does. Let me just add a personal note. In all my dealings with Northern Virginia service people, Mannix is as honest and straight forward as they get. There was no up sale, no extra costs, and no BS. They just did what I asked and fixed my AC. As a result Mannix and Dan have earned our business for life. And they did it the old fashion way with honesty and ethical business practices. Thanks guys! And keep up the good work.

Well, my visit from Mannix was certainly a unique experience, involving poor scheduling by Mannix, a nice up front service provider and KITTENS. First, the bad. When I called to make an appointment, I told the scheduler that we have TWO properties in Northern VA and would like to get a seasonal service at both, all done in one day. She scheduled appointments for both properties and gave me actual appointment times - NOT windows. The contractor would come to Property A at 10am, complete the work there, then follow me to arrive at Property B at 11am (Naively, because I was trying to fit a ton of things on my one day of leave, I also scheduled Terminix to be at Property B between 12 and 3pm). So at 9:45am I was on my way to Property A, an apartment style condo, and received a call from a representative at Mannix telling me they were running a little late and would be there "just slightly after 10am". I said "no problem". At 10:30 I called again and was told they were on their way. At this point I started watching TV on my iPhone and next thing I knew it was 11:25. They had blown BOTH appointments. Right at this point, the Mannix service provider, Bill, pulled up out front. I asked him how long the service would take, because by this point I was 20 minutes away from Property B and had an appointment window with Terminix there starting in 30 minutes. He seemed confused, said Mannix NEVER sets appointments for specific times, and stated he had called his office before 10am and told them he would be HOURS late for my appointments. Obviously this was not passed on to me in the "they will be slightly late" phone call. So, I told Bill to go ahead and get started and I would call Terminix and hope they were running late too. After looking at the interior heat pump, he asked to see the outside compressor. We went out to the side of the building where all the compressors are located in a wooden-fenced-in corral area. All of a sudden a cat jumped from behind Bill onto the top of the fence. We looked over to the corner of the corral and there was a litter of 4-week old kittens! Up until this point I had honestly still been acting somewhat miffed about the late arrival. However, there's something about finding a litter of tiny barely-eyes-open kittens that erases all animosity. To my surprise, Bill, the A/C service provider, was extremely concerned about the kittens. It was over 90 degrees out and about 100% humidity, so we put out some cold water for them (he had a cold bottle of water in his truck). Bill also helped me close a big cable television access box where one of the larger kittens was hiding - it was full of wires and hanging open - it didn't seem like a safe place for kittens. I ended up calling a friend who volunteers for animal rescue, much to Bill's relief (he was really worried!). Good news - All the kittens are now in foster homes and have been declared fully adoptable, and the mom is in foster care with them :). OK, kitten break over & back to the A/C. The A/C at Property A was in great shape, which Bill confirmed. No issues, super quick. He gave me some good advice on finding an off-the-shelf filter to fit in my odd-size system. Once he was done at Property A and the kitten rescue process was set in motion, we moved on to Property B (fortunately, Terminix was running late too...). The central A/C at our townhome is around 12 years old and should be reaching the end of its service life, but we REALLY need it to hang on at least 1 more year. Bill assured me he thought it could make it. He said it was a little low on freon which could mean the beginnings of a leak. He gave it 1Lb of freon and showed me where to check a joint outside the compressor for moistness/termperature in about a month to see if it's losing efficiency, and told me to call him back if we need to, at which point they'll look for a leak. He also advised us to keep the system at 75 or 80 degrees during the day when it's really hot out, to minimize strain on the compressor...but he said at night we can set it lower. Our exterior unit also had a crack in the fuse plate where it connects to the house. We had noted this in our home inspection when we bought the property, and thought it needed to be replaced. Bill stated that he would not advise replacing it. He said that the existing fuse plate is higher quality by far than anything he could order today and that the crack is minor and does not put the system at risk. He said he could replace it if we want, but the replacements available are flimsier than what we have. I thought this was a good indicator of honesty on his and Mannix's part. At the end of the day, despite my frustration with the scheduling (be warned!!!) we did sign a service contract for both properties with Mannix. We are hopeful that all will be well, we'll just be skeptical of timed appointments in the future.
Description of Work: Seasonal spring service (plus purchased service contract) on 5 year old Heat Pump in condominium.Seasonal spring service and freon charge (plus purchased service contract) for ~12 year old central A/C in townhome.-evaluate a cracked fuse plate at the townhome exterior A/C compressor.

Service performed at a rental house in Reston, VA. Tenants complaining there was a lack of AC. Mannix responded in 48hrs. The delayed response time was cited to recent warm weather -- seemed reasonable given that most AC units were just begining started for the first time this season so there was most likely a number of pending service calls. After 30 minutes of troubleshooting a lack of voltage to the unit, technican determined that the T-stat was dislodged and not making a solid connection with base. Technicain recommended adding a pound of R-22. We did. (Vendor has coupon for free lb of R-22 on web site). Overall pleased with the work, price and response time. Mannix contacted me via telephone for work authorization and payment. Smooth transaction. My only gripe is that I ask the technician if there are any additional service issues that were obvious with the unit. His response was that he was here for a repair call and not a maintenance service call and that I should consider getting the annual service plan if I wanted maintenance work. I told him that I work pay for the extra time to check the unit out and oil the blower, if needed. He reluctantly did a coursory look (informed me that the fan had a seal motor -- no oil required). He did a good job, I just wish he would have been more willing to put forth the extra effort to identify any other issues beyond the immediate failure, especially since I offered to pay for the time. Hence the lower rating on professionalism. Overall very pleased with the response to the service call.
Description of Work: Troubleshoot why unit was not blowing cold air due to frozen coil. Removed excess condensate from return duct caused by frozen coil melting. Reset dislodged T-stat and add 1 pound of R-22 freon.

I live in Reston, VA and my 2006 Carrier Air Conditioner stopped working on 5/27/2012. The air was still blowing from the furnace/HVAC, but the outside compressor/heat pump unit wasn't turning on. (I've owned the house since Nov 2009 and hadn't had any problems, but hadn't performed any maintenance on it either for the 2010 and 2011 cooling seasons.) I used Youtube to see if I could diagnose it myself, but I couldn't figure it out, so I called Mannix after reading their high scores on Angieslist. Although it was after hours on Sunday, a nice lady took my phone call and said they'd schedule with me in the morning. On Monday, Mannix called and scheduled with me for a normal appointment on Tuesday at 8am. (Emergency/Holiday calls are $150.) Mannix's serviceman promptly showed up at 8am, diagnosed my problem (a blown capacitor), replaced the capacitor and got the unit working again within 1 hour. He also instructed me on how to take care of my unit by cleaning the coils. He identified that that the fan blade had some vibration issues and said that I could replace the fan blade for $100 and the fan motor for $450. I decided not to do those repairs at this time, but was appreciative of the comments. (I'd noticed the vibration before and agree with their assessment.) I highly recommend Mannix and believe that they'll give you a fair deal on repairs. I paid $79.95 for the service call (referencing Angieslist, normal price is $89.95) and $75 for the new capacitor.
Description of Work: Mannix diagnosed and repaired my Air Conditioner/Compressor/Heat Pump which wasn't turning on due to a blown/faulty capacitor. They responded promptly, within 24 hours of my call, on Tuesday at 8am after Memorial Day Weekend, and fixed it within 1 hour.

The salesman, Patrick, was very thorough and took a lot of time during the appointment taking measurements and determining the best sized unit for my house. He explained the different types of systems available and did not pressure me into deciding anything right away, even though I did sign the contract during the appointment. The installers arrived promptly on the day scheduled and installed the outside and inside units with no issues, and cleaned up completely upon finishing. They showed me how the new thermostat worked and made sure I had no questions before they left. I had to call the company back for some help with a rebate question and they were extremely helpful and followed up to ensure that I had everything that I needed. This was one of the best homeowner project experiences that I have ever had, And the new system is working great!
Description of Work: I needed to replace my 12 year old heat pump system and took information from several companies, including the one that had originally installed the old system. I went with Mannix because of their competitive pricing, responsiveness, and professionalism.

I called many companies on Memorial Day weekend when my air conditioning unit failed. A representative from Mannix called back immediately and schedule the first available appointment. The technician Dan who did the work was excellent. He not only diagnosed and fixed the problem but he told us what we needed to know in order to fix the problem ourselves in the future. I couldn't have asked for better service.
Description of Work: My air conditioning unit problem was diagnosed and fixed.

I received excellent service! When my unit was repaired LAST YEAR by another company, they failed to properly install the repair which lead to my unit icing up. Mannix found the leak and was able to repair it without costing me thousands of $$$. If the other company had just done the work right last year, I wouldn't have had to spend the money to fix it this year.
Description of Work: They had to search for a leak in my air conditioning system, pumped down the unit, re-soldered connection, and charged unit.

I purchased this HVAC replacement as part of my FHA 203k mortgage. In short, this meant that I was able to throw the cost of the replacement on my loan instead of paying directly. After going through this, the process is very intense with a lot of paperwork and special rules, especially for any contractors I worked with. Mannix was very helpful in getting a lot of unique paperwork back to me quickly so I could turn around my home purchase. I was very worried about selecting contractors because of horror stories for special cases like this but Mannix was great. Once that was out of the way, they were able to schedule the replacement within a week. I was not home for the replacement but all of the old equipment and surrounding areas were completely cleaned up with no signs that they had just done a major repair. The new system looks and works GREAT so far. If I ever get another house, need a replacement in 20 years or was asked for a recommendation, I would without a doubt recommend Mannix.
Description of Work: I had Mannix replace the existing HVAC system when I purchased my new townhouse. They were quickly able to providing a quote for a replacement of a high efficiency Carrier system. In addition to a great price for a high quality item, they also provide a 10 year parts and labor warranty on the system in the price, making it even more of an amazing deal.

Dan the HVAC man was very professional and he got to work as soon as I showed him the A/C unit. Kept me informed of the progress at all times. He completed the work, cleaned up dobled check the thermostat, HVAC and cleaned the compressor unit.
Description of Work: A/C stopped working, did not know the cause. Called Mannix and they made it to my house that same day. Got a call Dan showed up and started troubleshooting the problem. He quickly established that the problem was the compressor and a leak, which he repaired within half an hour.
