First and foremost, the sales rep arrived at my door better prepared than anyone I have ever had come and make a bid for work on my home. He not only had a scale drawing of my home, but a Google map photo of it. He was able to talk dimensions with me from the get go. After we had spoken about options and my desire to have a metal roof installed he was able to go out to his vehicle and come back in five minutes with a detailed, typed, contract proposal. It was great to have that in hand as I considered other bids. It did, however, lead to a couple problems because changes we discussed verbally did not get entered except in handwriting and those did not get to the workcrew. None were price factors nor quality issues and it actually caused Katchmark's crew more work, but it did raise a flag in that I realized later I should have gone over the revisions with the company rep who followed up with me before they came on the job - and then with the crew chief (a guy who really knew his stuff - he keep a sizable crew working efficiently for a week). As far as the work crew and workmanship, I could not be happier. They showed up early and worked throughout the day. Everything specified was done. They had to do a lot of cutting of materials and needed to fabricate a ridge vent, all done with perfection as far as I can tell (I have been up on my roof looking for issues and have found none and there were zero leaks during recent heavy downpours). Katchmark says that their crews are their employees, not people they pick up to do jobs - and it shows in the quality of their work. As for the problems. The biggest issue was that the contract called for a new attic fan. I told the sales rep a new one was not needed - the existing one was less than five years old. In addition, there were a number of old vent pipes on the roof, none of them in use after a remodel some 20 years ago. After a conversation as to whether an attic fan was even needed with a metal roof and ridge vent we agreed that they would just take it out along with the vent pipes. None of that got passed on to the work crew. They cut roof sheets around the vents and sealed around them. They cut a larger hole in my roof for the new fan (that was the biggest problem as the attic is a storage area and there is debris over all the items stored there - mainly boxes so nothing was damaged - just messy). And they did not fully install the fan they put in place. I realized they did not have the revised information too late - the work was all but done. I spoke to Katchmark later and they sent their own tech out to fully re-install the fan, no problem. Overall I have to say that Katchmark was pretty impressive to work with, despite the communication snafu. They know their business, hire quality people, and follow though and follow-up (the latter being just as important). I paid a little more to get that quality and am glad I did.
Description of Work: Removed existing roof and underlying tar paper. Install metal roof with water/ice shield and 30lb felt paper underlining. Replace sheathing as needed, fabricate and install ridge vents, clean out gutters, replace chimney flashing, remove and cart away 30 year old solar panel, and install new attic fan.

Their initial bid was $16,000 but then everything was priced individually. If they had to make cuts in the membrane it was going to go up and all these things were adding up. It was going to cost me close to $24,000. They were also using an outdated product. I got that information from the EPA website. That's what I was looking to base my decision on. My decision was based on the EPA website and how long they talk about products lasting and the continued reflection time. I was going from a black roof to a white roof so I didn't want something that wasn't going to break down.

The work was scheduled very quickly. The crew arrived early and got to work putting down ground covers to catch the old material as it was taken off. And just like they said, they took it all to the front side of the townhouse for disposal. There was minimal roofing material in the back. When they finished up they went over the front and back yard, the front lawn and the parking areas using magnets to pick up any roofing staples that might have escaped attention. There were only a couple of pieces of roofing and a couple roofing staples that they missed but, given the amount of material they had to remove, they got at least 99% of the waste materials. They were quick and efficient.
Description of Work: Re-roofed our townhouse. Took off two layers of asphalt shingles and replaced them with a new, more durable set of asphalt shingles. Two of the plywood roofing sheet were replaced (not bad for 42 years in place).

The workers from Katchmark Construction Company were very professional. I never had any problems with them throughout the work. They provided me with the roofing materials I needed. They were very honest in explaining the different options I had. They did a perfect job. They completed the entire work in less than a day. It was a very pleasant experience. They are certainly the best one out of the other companies I’ve dealt with in this area. We had six roofing companies out to give me a bid and Katchmark Construction Company was the most competitive. I would use them again in the future.

It was a wonderful experience. I had a lot of questions for the salesperson. He took the time to sit with me and answer all my questions and explain everything, which was good. They came when they were supposed to. The work went well. They went out of their way to work with me. I am going to be pursuing a claim with the original roof and they worked with me to get pictures on the roof to send to the other roofing company. It was a little thing but it was a big thing to me. They replaced the gutter screens, which another company had said they wouldn't do. They damaged a gutter and they came back to repair it in a short amount of time. They did a great cleanup job. They were the best to work with financially for me. They had the lowest bid and they did what they could to work with me and they put together the most advantageous financing plan. We've had several high wind days and the roof has been holding up beautifully. I asked them if they could also send the pictures through the US Post and they did that. I would absolutely use them again and I immediately recommend them to anyone that I talk to when roofing issues come up.
Description of Work: I used Katchmark Construction to install a new roof and they also covered exterior wooden parts of the roof that were exposed. They covered them with metal shielding so they wouldn't deteriorate as fast.

We were very happy with them. The quality of the work was outstanding. There was a minor cosmetic issue that I wasn't happy with when they were done. I called and they came back and redid that whole area. The quality was very good and they were very responsive. It was an expensive job but it was fair. We had gotten two other estimates and they were all about the same.

A treee hit house just after christmass and damaged corner of roof, gutter, and part of siding. I dutifully went thru ther process and got 3 estimates, Katchmark's wasn;'t the lowest or highest, but I liked the responsiveness of the company and the estimater. It took a couple of weeks to get in the replacement siding to match the color of the house, but overall the job went extremely well. Roof was repaired, new gutter installed, siding fixed. No sign left that they had been there working on the house.

The work was performed on three separate days by three separate crews. All crews were punctual, professional and efficient. A crew chief identified themselves before work began, and remained on-site for each of the jobs. They were very patient with me, answering my questions about various aspects of the job, and showing me anything that was unexpected or outside expected parameters. For example, the roofing crew chief informed me at the beginning of the day that they would let me know how many plywood sheets would need to be replaced after the old roof had been removed. The roof was inspected, and they then took me up on the roof to show me which sheets were damaged, what constituted "damage," and what the next steps would be. The siding crew followed the same process when working on the soffits. After the work was completed, I needed to contact the siding crew chief about some outstanding issues. She was responsive, and able to address all the issues in a timely manner. Overall, the work done by Katchmark was superb, used quality materials, and was done by employees that were competent, professional and efficient. Follow-up after job completion was also excellent.
Description of Work: Remove and replace roof, siding, gutters and downspouts. Roof: Repairs were done to wood under roof, and a raised-ridge vent was installed. Siding: Tyvec was installed under the new siding, soffit vents were drilled and installed and the vents at the peak were covered. Gutters: New gutters with leaf-guards and downspouts were installed.

Katchmark was one of about five contractors giving me bids for the re-roofing project. The estimator was the brother of the owner of the company; he was came at the appointed time and was thorough in his explanation. Katchmark's estimate was the lowest of the five companies and was the only company using GAF roofing materials. After a little research, I discovered that there is not much -- if any -- difference between GAF shingles and CertainTeed, the other major brand. We went with a 30 year, charcoal-colored architectural style, a "middle-of-the-road" level shingle. When I agreed to the project, they expected a 4-6 week wait time, but there was a cancellation and they came within 10 days. In fact, they did the project on the last day of the year. They had a big crew working -- maybe 8 guys. During the job, expect that your property will look like a disaster -- with tarps and debris all over the place. I told the crew chief that we had a party that night and it had to be cleaned up. They finished the entire project in a day and did a relatively thorough clean up. I found only a few pieces of roofing material around the house and a couple of nails. Chris handled my account at Katchmark and was very responsive and helpful. In the department of "stuff happens," I discovered that my car had a roofing nail in it a day after the crew left. Unfortunately, I had to replace the tire because it could not be repaired. I talked to Chris about it and, without missing a beat, told me to send the invoice for the tire replacement and he would deduct it from the invoice amount. Amazing customer service. Also, I mentioned to Chris that the stack pipe on the front of the house was supposed to be painted black -- to match the roof. He got someone on it and it was done in quick order -- even after I paid the invoice. I was very pleased with the entire experience. Given that it is such an important and expensive job for a house, I was pretty nervous about how it would go. Consequently, I did a lot of research, talked to a number of roofers, and talked to friends who had recent roofing experiences. I would recommend that everyone do the same. In the end, Katchmark was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend them to others. Don't forget the Katchmark coupon on Angie's List, also.

From the estimate to the completion of gutter installation, Katchmark Construction took care of every detail. The old siding was removed, insulation placed and the vinyl siding applied. The workmanship is superb for each aspect of the job. Knowledgeable people performed or supervised the work. We were kept informed of possible scheduling changes due to the snow. Eric patiently worked with me to change the way the routing of the gutters several times. The resulting work is beautiful. Great job!

Katchmark was the low bid on this project. They did the job in one day and cleaned up. A supervisor called me midway through the job to let me know the beams were bowing and might lead to water pooling on the roof -- which would cost about $8,000 to fix, doubling the cost of the project. But they recommended we NOT do that, because the roof material could take a bit of water sitting there. They added some extra insulation in the area that might pool, in order to make any puddles as shallow as possible, and put extra flashing on any seams in the area, which added five more years to the warranty for that section -- at no cost. I would definitely recommend Katchmark's work.

Poor workmanship, no quality control, and damaged property. I entered into a contract with Katchmark Construction for installation of a new roof, gutters, downspouts, and skylight to include minor exterior repairs. I paid a 1/3 deposit and the work was to be completed on 11/4 (roof) and 11/6 (gutters). On the day of the roof installation, I sat in my car for approx 30 minutes watching the crew work on my home. I witnessed the crew recklessly flinging debris off the roof which hit the siding of my home as well as my neighbor. The debris caused dents, scuffs, and chipped paint on the siding, dents/marks on the wood trim, dents/scratches on a new storm door I just installed, as well as broke several branches off expensive landscaped trees in the front yard. One of the trees is a Japanese maple which I paid 250 dollars for. In addition to the property damage, Katchmark did not install the correct color of roof shingles as stated in the contract, broke my skylight, and did not replace the downspouts. They departed my property without saying a word about the property damage they caused. The crew left debris and nails in my yard, deck, as well as the neighbor's deck, yard, roof. Furthermore, some Azek used to replace existing fascia boards appears used and not in new condition. The Azek is dirty and marked up with brown splotches of paint or old caulk. Bottom line: Katchmark is in breach of contract. Replacing the gutter is the only item they got right, but even that part of the job reflects poor workmanship. The corner gutter is slanted the wrong way (away from the downspout). In good faith I agreed to work with the company in resolving this issue. The first order of business was to address the roof as it is the wrong color and I reside within an association. I was assured by the production manager (who inspected the roof personally) that the roof was installed correctly and there were no deficiencies. However, independent inspection by a trained industry professional revealed several deficiencies which once again demonstrated a lack of candor on the part of Katchmark even after I gave them a second chance. Furthermore, one of the "best" workers sent to replace the broken skylight didn't even replace the counter flashing which was included in the contract. From the interior, the skylight installation also looks horrible. As all of this happened after my meeting with the production manager, I have lost confidence in the company to get anything correct. I met with the owner who was less than forthright and is still trying to make a profit from this disaster by charging me double the price for siding materials. I also allowed him to inspect the roof but did not tell him I had hired an independent inspection. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he would be honest and point out the deficiencies; he did not. Bottom line: Katchmark has delivered a breach of contract, material misrepresentations, property damages, and poor workmanship. 1/17/2011 UPDATE: My BBB complaint against Katchmark has been closed as unresolved due to no response from Katchmark. I also sent Katchmark a certified letter dated 12/10/2010 olffering to resolve this matter and gave them seven business days upon receipt to respond. To date, I have received to written response. Their disregard for the BBB dispute resolution process and my December 10th letter is not what I would expect from a customer serivce oriented company who is sincere about resolving this matter. Since they have not completed the terms of the contract I was forced to file a credit card dispute to obtain a refund for desposits paid.
Description of Work: 1/17/2011 UPDATE: My BBB complaint against Katchmark has been closed as unresolved due to no response from Katchmark. This company was contracted for replacement of existing roof, gutters, downspouts, and skylights. They failed at every aspect of the written contract beginning with installing the wrong color shingles; the contract called for slate gray but they installed gray frost. I live in a neighborhood with an HOA and having a roof that is not the same color as surrounding homes is a problem. Moreover, some of the services were never performed and if I had not hired an independent inspection I would've been charged for work/services not received which would be tantamont to fraud. I came home early and sat in my car across the street observing the work crews and was appalled to see the level of disrespect for my property. They recklessly flung debris off the roof which hit the side of the house and onto my landscaping. There was damage (dents, scuffs, paint chips) to my home as well as my neighbor's siding. They left trash and nails in the yard, on the deck, and on the neighbor's roof. In addition to the property damage, they have no quality control and workmanship was poor. For example, the shingles and keyways are crooked, an entire section of roof along the chimney was never replaced, and protruding nails are keeping shingles from lying flat -- even though the company told me the raised shingles were normal and would eventually lay flat. Perhaps most disappointing is the lack of candor demonstrated by the company. Honesty can be a mitigating factor in circumstances such as this but Katchmark has not extended this courtesy even after I agreed to allow the a chance to resolve this matter. The company does deliver a great sales pitch and is excellent in marketing -- "packaging" is good but the product is terrible.

Response from Katchmark Construction Inc
Katchmark Construction prides itself on its excellent reputation for quality and customer service. While customer problems are very infrequent, we do not like to have any dissatisfied customers. When a problem arises, we attempt to properly and quickly resolve the situation. The Member's factual recitation is inaccurate and she also neglects to mention Katchmark’s efforts to respond to the legitimate concerns she raised. We proposed reasonable corrective measures but in our opinion the Member was not interested in reasonable solutions. Thereafter, prior to the Member's posting on November 20, 2010, we contacted her on November 19th and offered a refund of all sums paid plus compensation for verifiable damage. We received no reply from the Member.

This past summer I researched and got estimates for gutter/soffit/fascia replacement. (Due to the 'snowpocalypse'.) One of the companies from whom I requested an estimate was Katchmark. It is highly rated by several consumer services including Angie's List and had excellent feedback. The representative that provided the estimate impressed me as a courteous, knowledgeable and capable professional. The estimate he provided to me was completely in line with the other estimates I received. (Both for the work that needed to be done as well as the cost of doing that work.) He also took the time to go over options and alternatives as well as some suggestions on how to choose amongst them. While I ended up going with another company, I would have no concerns or hesitation in using Katchmark.

Everything went wonderfully. Steve Katchmark, Jr. showed up promptly and gave us an estimate which was right on par with all of the estimates that we received. They were able to schedule us promptly (the following week) and were even able to schedule us on Saturday to accomodate our schedule. They showed up promptly on Saturday morning and went to work immediately. The crew was meticulous about their work from the drip edge all the way to the roof vent. They finished the job in one day (as promised) and triple-checked the yard for nails and debris to keep our dog from hurting herself. Everything went extremely well and our new roof looks fantastic.

Katchmark did an excellent job. Worked with sales manager, David Hill. The job was done in conjunction with a replacement of the roof-mounted AC unit (done by another vendor). Katchmark coordinated with the AC vendor so that both jobs were completed in 3 days, as promised. During roof replacement, we could not be home. The on-site coordinate kept us informed on the status of all phases as the job progressed. They did a good job of cleanup before leaving.
Description of Work: Flat roof replacement. Removed all existing layers. Replaced plywood base. Installed tapered installation. Installed 60 mil TPO. Added flashing around penetrations and plumbing pipes. Installed walk pad around roof-mounted AC unit. Installed metal coping cap on parapet. Replaced gutters and cladding on rear of roof.

I was extremely dissapointed with my experience with Katchmark. I had 4 companies come out and give me an estimate and went with Katchmark because of their experience and roof warranty. Professionalism - We were having a roof replaced because we had hail damage. They came out and gave us an estimate on replacing the roof. When they came out to do the work and removed the existing shingles, they said that the plywood under the shingles did not have "H-clips" and all the plywood needed to be replaced to be up to Code(which was created in 2006). They told us it would cost $5k to replace all 70 sheets of plywood. The plywood had previously been replaced in 2000 so it was 10 years old. The peices of plywood near the gutters were damaged due to all of the ice and snow over the winter but the rest of the shingles were in good condition. When they initially removed the shingles they even said it was in good condition but that we were just replacing it so that we had the necessary H-clips. We did not have the additional $5k(almost doubling the original estimate) so we asked if there was any way that we could just replace the plywood around the edges which would cost $1k. They agreed but said they needed to substantially decrease our warranty since we did not replace all of the plywood. So what they are saying is that basically unless you have the h-clips and get all new plywood they are not going to honor their full warranty. If that is the way they are going to operate then they should quote the plywood replacement upfront. Pretty much any roof that is being replaced would have been installed prior to 2006 so they know that it is not going to have the h-clips or new plywood. This just put a really bad taste in my mouth. Beware that if they quote a roof replacement and don't add in the cost of all new plywood you could be in for a much larger cost than originally estimated. Punctuality - They called me on a Friday and told me that the shingles would be delivered on Tuesday and work would be done Wednesday. The shingles were delivered Tuesday but workers did not show up Wed or Thur. Thur afternoon I called and they said it was a scheduling mistake on their part and they would have someone out on Friday. Not a huge deal but a bit of an inconvenience.

Response from Katchmark Construction Inc
The plywood on this home at the time of our install was replaced because it was 3/8" thickness, not because there were no "H" clips. The current code requires 1/2" plywood. She now has 1/2" plywood with "H" clips, and the roof deck integrity is much better as a result of this. If a homeowner has 3/8" plywood roof decking, Katchmark recommends that they replace it with 1/2" plywood so that our 10 year warranty can be given. The 3/8" plywood gives too much, and if walked on, can and usually will collapse, especially if it has been on a roof since 1986, which is when this home was built.

The person that came out to give the estimate was clearly very knowledgeable and was able to answer all my questions. I had started with a national roofing assoc list of questions and their estimate came in close to the one other quote I received but with better materials. They scheduled the work a few weeks later and arrived as scheduled. It took them 2 days for the job. I wasn't available for a walk through when they were here, but I got out the ladder that weekend and found a couple items that needed to be finished - one corner of the sealing wasn't completely sealed and one piece of gutter guard wasn't completely attached. It took a couple weeks to get someone out to finish these items, and the company rep insisted I not pay the final 30% until it was completed. Everything looks great and I haven't had to clean the gutters!
Description of Work: We have lived in our house for 20 years and never had the roofd replaced. We seemed to remember that it was replaced about 5 yrs before we bought it. So we had them replace the roof, and the gutters and downspouts, along with installing gutter guards, new sofficts and sealing the woodwork around the roof.
