Never did get the estimate. Had to hire another company.
Response from Newborg Drainage & Landscaping Company

"It is hard to recall the specifics of what happened so long ago but we apologize we didn't live up to your expectations and will try harder in the future. Our goal is to return all calls and provide everything we said we would, and primarily to leave every customer satisfied."

I did not hire this company because another company proposed a solution I preferred, but Newborg's price was in line with other estimates I received for my drainage problem. When I made the appointment I wasn't told that the estimate cost $75 (applicable to the bill if I hired them) so it was a bit of an awkward surprise. I gave B for quality and professionalism because the estimator talked a lot about his many years of experience in the construction industry, but he didn't seem so knowledgeable about drainage problems.

The person that came to visit (Richard?) was very nice and thorough. We discussed ideas and options and finally agreed that he would provide two estimates. The first was to be a bare bones regrading and the second a more elaborate landscaping project, each with drawings. Ultimately we only received the latter and that was only after we called and hounded for the drawings. It was as if the person that came to our house was completely different from the person that was tasked with finishing the project. They explained the delay was because of a vacation. That's a totally valid reason except it should have been articulated before the vacation so we weren't left wondering and it does not justify why the first set of drawings were never completed.

They're an excellent company, but their estimate was a little high, so I didn't go with them.

We had used Newborg once before, for clearing exterior drainage, and were satisfied with their work. When they did the sump/pump installation, however, they plugged the opening with a piece of wood and put on top of it a plastic piece with what appeared to be drainage holes. Another company installed the exterior electrical connection (which worked fine). When the next heavy rain occured that area overflowed into the basement and caused extensive damage to the carpet, etc. When we contacted Newborg they blamed it on water flow from the roof, supposedly blocked by the eaves and downspouts. Several excuses. Then we removed the flat, circular plastic covering -- to discover that there were no drainage holes in the wooden plug! Of course water collected -- it had no way to go into the sump! We talked to the lead supervisor (Pablo) and left messages for Mr Newborg, saying they owed us the cost of the cleanup. No response. Then we deducted that cost from Newborg's final billing, providing them a copy of the cleanup company's bill -- and said they owed us an apology. However, not only were they negligent, causing damage to our property, but they also didn't have the professionalism to at least apologize!!! I wouldn't trust them again.

It went extremely well. They were very professional - very much like old world craftsmen, even laying the stones in the dry creek bed with great care and precision. They worked long and hard in the heat of the summer, hardly taking breaks and always striving for perfection.

EXCELLENT!! Newborg arrived on time and stayed till the work was done (it was a long day for them). Everything was done to my satisfaction and a follow-up call was handled within two hours. Pablo is incredible and Christine is a gem to work with. In Northern Virginia, it was totally refreshing to find a company that "does what they say they will do" - no hassles, no arguing. I give Newborg a FIVE STAR rating!!!

I've forgotten the estimator's name. He recommended "Terra Flow" as a product that would eliminate standing surface water. Estimate was for around $4k to $5K. He offered to repair the box at no additional charge if I was having the other work done. He claimed he used the "Terra Flow" product at his home and it eliminated his problem completely. I couldn't find any other references on the product so we weren't comfortable with having the product installed.

Everything did not go well. They came out in January to give me the estimate but I haven't heard back from them since.
Response from Newborg Drainage & Landscaping Company

"The $75 fee involves about an hour of our consultants' time and included a detailed solutions report. The fee is refunded if you decide to have us complete the work. If you are not satisfied with the consultation, that fee may also be refunded. It is hard to know the specifics of what happened almost two years ago but we apologize we didn't live up to your expectations and will try harder in the future. Our goal is to leave every customer satisfied."

Thorough consultation to look at drainage problems and identify recommended solutions. Clear quote with optional items explained and as additional cost. Workforce arrived on time and worked very hard over two days to complete project. Garden left spotless at end of work both days. Basement has remained dry after several heavy rains since work completed. I cannot praise this company highly enough - expertise, local knowledge, quality of work, and value for money are spot on.

After getting water in my basement, I called Newborg to come out and give me an estimate to fix it. I met the consultant, he looked at my yard for about 4 minutes, then he went back to his truck to draw up the plans. He explained what needed to be done, didn't seem like anything unusual. He also explained that I had too much mulch in the backyard (too deep) and it should be more shallow. It all looked great, I paid him $75 and called to schedule the work. This was in January, the work was done in late February. In early May we had more drenching rain over a number of days. Water came into the basement again. I called Newborg to see if they could send someone out to take another look, to see it while the water was there, and to see if they had any more ideas to improve the work. I knew their work was not guaranteed to prevent water from coming in, but I figured I wouldn't mind spending more if it was needed. The receptionist said someone would call me back. No one ever called me back. I ended up calling a waterproofing company instead (MER/morrison) who came out that very day, and I scheduled the work for the next week. Following the waterproofing, we had more drenching rain, and at that point someone from Newborg finally called me - to check in on how the basement was holding up. I explained that I had called the last time I had water and no one had ever called me back, so I had to spend many thousand more dollars with an entirely different company/approach. He was very apologetic, but I would not recommend using them since they were not responsive whatsoever when I called to have someone come out and evaluate the situation.

This was to have been our third project with Newborg, and we called them first because we were very happy with the two earlier jobs they had done for us. We walked through this project with their consultant, Jim Ford, who promised us a proposal within days. When it didn't arrive, we followed up twice by telephone, with no response. As a result, we've lost three weeks and are in danger of not meeting our other deadlines as we prepare to put the house on the market. What is dismaying is the absolute lack of response. If Newborg concluded this was not a project they wished to bid on, why not simply say so? If there are some other circumstances that are causing the delay, why not let the client know? Very sorry performance by Newborg all around, sad to say, and we won't be using them in the future.

Overall the experience was positive they do excellent work and everyone is professional and knowledgeable. The problem was getting a prompt response and being kept in the loop as to what was going on as far as when they could start the job, etc. Further on the day they began working, the crew arrived before the foreman and that caused confusion due to a language barrier.

Excellent. Richard Schoen came out to our house and did a very thorough inspection of our property to determine how to avoid flooding into the areaway. He spent about an hour outside and then sent us a report outlining a proposal for exterior drainage. Their bid was less extensive and less expensive than others. He also picked up a shovel and dug to show me how we can temporarily remediate the problem ourselves. He was willing to make DIY suggestions to help us offset the cost. We really liked that they were not trying to "sell" us or push a very expensive solution. When we get the work done, we will be calling them.

After we submitted the contract, Newborg called to schedule the work and the crew then showed up on the appointed day at the appointed hour. The crew was a pleasure to have around. During the course of the day, they spotted a couple of minor things (such as cutting out some tree roots that partially blocked a buried drain) that they could do to improve the flow of water away from the house and they simply took care of them even though they were not specified in the contract. At they end of the day they cleaned up the work site so thoroughly that you could not tell they had even worked on the house, if you did not know what they had done. All in all, it was one of the best experiences we have ever had with a home repair/ home improvement contractor.

I could not be more thrilled with the outcome of this project! For years we have had increasingly severe flooding downstairs whenever there was a very heavy rain. The work that Newborg did completely solved the problem. We had a very heavy rain a few weeks ago, and the system passed the test with flying colors - not a drop of moisture in the house. The estimator came to my house at the scheduled time and drew up a plan and an estimate for the drainage improvement and explained it to me clearly. We put down a deposit for the work, and it was scheduled. The installers came exactly on time, were very professional, and accomplished the work in a day and a half, as expected. They planted grass seed over the area which had to be dug up.

It was an excellent experience. They had a very personable and knowledgable consultant come out to assess the situation and to give us a quote. The quote was accurate. The price was very reasonable. The workers stayed until dark so they could finish in one day. They did a good job of cleaning up. The quality of the work was great. The crew was very personable as well.

Newborg was the very essence of professionalism. Instead of recommending expensive and unnecessary work, their representative was honest and said that exterior piping was not necessary for our property. Newborg did not even charge me a consult fee because their representative was able to diagnose the issue quickly. The level of professionalism he exhibited and his refusal to exploit the situation for profit was impressive and ensures that I will go back to them if I ever have any water problems in the future. Through their obvious competence and honesty they have built a high level of trust with me.

I wanted to give information on this company since I was impressed with their explanation of the drainage problem. I wish I could have reached them about coming back out to do the job. They did not return my calls in a timely manner so I ended up using another company.

I was very pleased and fortunate that I called Newborg out to look at the problem because they gave me a honest assessment of the problem and told us that we could easily have our landscapers correct the problem and it should not cost a lot of money.

This company is very efficient and true to its word. My phone call was promptly handled, an appointment made with an engineer, Jim Ford, (a little bit of a wait for the appointment but worth it), the engineer arrived exactly on time. He was beyond helpful in assessing my problem, even giving me advice on other remedies that are beyond their scope of work, drawing a schematic of the work they would do that mostly involved backfilling eroded areas, putting in clean outs for the drains, re-routing and replacing some of the drain pipes. The workers also arrived on time and did an amazing job of preserving the many plantings I have around the areas, replacing sod and cleaning up. Best of all, we have had at least 2 gully washers since the work and my basement is dry! I expected to have to pay at least $5,000 to do this work, but the charge was under $1500.
