"I called and spoke with our client to thank him for his business and for this review. Before I called I did speak to my lead Foreman and our Sales Rep so that I could be briefed. They explained to me that when our client asked us about the leak to his shed roof we did inform him that this type of work was not under our purview as we don't do any type of roofing. The deck that we worked on was above the shed & not in contact, we replaced some railing on this deck as well as some other work that was not near the shed so it was not the belief that we did anything to cause a leak to the shed below the deck. I had an excellent conversation with our client and he explained to me that the shed was built years ago & the contractor subcontracted the work after promising that they would not and the roof had a leak when it was first built. But that after calling enough times the original contractor finally did come back to fix and used a rubber product to stop the leak. It seems that after all these years this rubber has worn out and needs fixed or replaced. I took the time to explain that the reason we could not do any roof repairs to a shed is simply because we specialize in decks & fences and I do not subcontract our work so I just don't have anyone on my crew who has roofing experience so I did not want to undertake something for which we lack expertise. Further I explained that while yes we do build about 2-3 sheds a year in those cases we are building a brand new shed from scratch and thus we can be confident in the project and in those cases we do hire a professional roofer to do the roofs but that it would not be prudent for us to start doing stand alone roof repairs. Finally I mentioned that we have found a good handyman company that has really helped us a lot for such minor things as when we damage a screen during a deck demo or what not so I gave the information of this handyman company to our client and I wished him good luck with them hoping that they could fix the leak on the roof of his shed."
So I contacted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence. It was a small business and not one of these big deck companies. The business owner Larry came out himself and provided me with a no pressure estimate and was honest and knowledgeable. He quoted me a fair price, about $1,000 to $1,500 less than the other guys. He was organized, prompt, and a down to earth, hard-working type guy so I felt comfortable using his company.
Once I agreed to the contract and was on the schedule, he was very good at keeping communication open and let me know when to expect his crew since there were some weather delays. I had Larry pull all of the necessary building permits since I didn't have time to get out to the county to do so myself. His crew was prompt every morning and Larry came by everyday to check on the progress and quality of workmanship.
I was extremely happy with the results. Everything went so well that the following year I had Larry and his company build a lower level deck to complete my back yard. I would recommend using NoVa D&F if you are looking for a fair price with excellent results.
My contact was Larry who was very thoughtful and responsive. He worked with me to understand what I wanted and to ensure I was happy with the final product. They take pride in their work and reputation.
We needed to have our rear fence replaced, and I selected four companies based on AL reviews, discounting what I judged as unwarranted low grades. I solicited bids via AL with a Statement of Work, site plat, and pictures of the existing fence attached. I followed up with a direct email to those I hadn't heard from after two business days. Two companies arranged for site visits and followed up with proposals; two others provided estimates without a site visit. I evaluated the companies based foremost on responsiveness to the SOW. Other aspects in order of importance included management factors, email and voice communications, warranty services, cost, incentives, and payment terms.
Northern Virginia Deck & Fence (100% A's & B's) responded a couple days after the solicitation was launched. After I resent the SOW (AL seems to drop attachments from time to time), we scheduled a site visit. The site visit was exactly what I expected; all of my questions were answered satisfactorily, and the representative handed me the cost proposal as he was leaving.
The proposal was reasonable and very competitive. The evaluations of NV Deck & Fence and its closest competitor were nearly identical, both receiving top or near-top scores in all of my evaluation factors. The determining factor turned out to be one with a lesser priority: NV Deck & Fence's cost proposal was the lower, both before and after applying discounts.
My only hesitation was that NV Deck & Fence has only two or three crews. Nevertheless, the project began consistent with the projected start date. The crew consisted of two workers, who completed about 80% of the project the first day and wrapped it up the following morning. They did a fantastic job: The fence is solid and straight, it looks great, and the gate opens and closes easily with no indications of future binding. The representative encouraged me several times to call them if any adjustments needed to be made, including after the warranty period had expired!
The only negative aspect of this project was a minor one. NV Deck & Fence will add a 3% surcharge for using a credit card unless the transactions occur in their office. I was willing to make the trips for the 50% down payment and final payment in order to avoid the surcharge.
I highly recommend Northern Virginia Deck & Fence and would use them again without reservation.
SERIOUSLY?
Exactly what could I expect from this company that can't be bothered to drive to my home to give me an estimate? Customer Service is a foreign concept here. This is how a company actually does business in 2014? This company obviously does not want to do any business in Prince William County. Save yourself the aggravation and don't bother contacting them for anything.
"For prospective customers outside of a 20 minute radius we offer an initial estimate via email if they are interested. We were very polite with this member, she elected to not have us provide an estimate for her as she needed an onsite consultation. This is understandable and we certainly wish her the best of luck, she is beyond our onsite estimators service area and if this offended her I apologize however I have offered to prepare email estimates to prospective clients outside of our immediate radius for years and no one has ever had an issue with this, until just now for whatever reason. For us to effectively service the areas that comprise 95% of our business, which are Alexandria, Arlington, Annandale, Springfield, Burke, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Great Falls, Lorton and Fairfax it is prudent for us to limit our onsite appointments to these areas. If this offended this member that is unfortunate but we can not spend hours in traffic to prepare one proposal when we could do multiple appointments close to our office. We focus our energy on the areas that we work every day, I regret this offended her and I have updated our Angie's List profile to not include Prince William county simply because of this member. This is unfortunate because we have done many projects in Prince William county for years and everyone else has understood the dynamic of us preparing the initial estimate via email, or they simply were courteous and moved forward in another direction. We very much appreciate Angie's List and look forward to remaining with this service, however I will say that we were not aware that anyone whom we never worked for or even met for an estimate would be posting trivial complaints that get positioned right next to the postings of our actual clients, all of whom are very happy, I feel this is simply not appropriate. Our reviews should be from homeowners who have done business with us, not from someone who is offended because it would take us over an hour in traffic to get to her location. So for anyone in Prince William county who would be offended as this member was, I would wish them the best of luck and I would be courteous. For us to maintain a tight control on matters, effectively bid our projects, and service our customers as we always have it is prudent for us to not go beyond a radius for estimates as traffic in this area makes this not prudent. I look forward to more reviews, hopefully from members who we have done business with and we will continue to meet or exceed your expectations. In this day and age of how busy we all are......... at least that I am as a business owner working 90-100 hour weeks I find it trivial for those who deem it prudent to bash businesses online simply because we are not near them and don't travel that far to meet them, yet we were courteous, gave her the option of having us prepare the proposal, and followed our standard practice by informing them from the outset of our protocol. Perhaps some have an abundance of spare time to spend online, I do not and would prefer to not be allocating any of my time responding to those who we have not done business with and simply wish to complain. I do wish this member the best of luck on her project and all the best moving forward."
