Without a doubt, Deck & Fences gets 5 Stars. AJ and his team said they would be at the house at 8:30 a.m. By 8:40 they were offloading material and staging it in the backyard. It was very evident from the start that each member of his team knew their assignments and were well versed in what had to be done. AJ was on sight the entire day working side by side with the other three. His entire team are professional, polite, and willing to chat when the opportunity would allow. They did the entire 10’x12’ deck in one day and there were no issues with their craftmanship. The reason we selected Deck and Fences was from a referral and had seen their work before, and was impressed with the quality. AJ did not pressure us into a sale when he came out for an estimate. He asked what we envisioned and provide sound recommendations with multiple designs/color options. Bottom line: If you need a deck refurbished Deck & Fences should be the first contractor that you call. You will not be disappointed.

Contract signed on 07/03/2020. They took care of ensuring Miss Utility marked the area. Work began and completed on 08/18/2020. Crew arrived on time and on schedule. They were very professional and took great care to not damage my many shrubs along the fence line. They constructed a beautiful Shoreline Wicomico White Vinyl fence. Cleanup was excellent. I Have received many compliments from neighbors. I am very happy with my new fence and highly recommend this company.

Great! We wanted to replace an aging deck and fence with something new, and to fence in a garden to keep our dog out of it. We received three quotes, and Northern Virginia Deck and Fence was both competitively priced and the most professional in handling the initial appointments. Oscar, their sales representative, arrived on time and carrying samples for different colors of Trex, which we had indicated we wanted. He spent about an hour measuring the yard. Permitting took some time due to the county's slowdown during the coronavirus crisis. But once the company was cleared to work, they did so. Their manager wore a mask any time we talked through next steps. The final product is sturdy, and the deck is beautiful.

Initially, great responsiveness. Work went according to plan. Even one hiccup was quickly remediated. One piece of wall art was damaged. It happens. I identified leaking in shed roof immediately below upper deck as work was ongoing and asked them to address it. Got nodding agreement. Project was finished with no further word. Called again after a few months and asked them to look at roof. Was told they don't do such work, though they build decks and sheds. Got feeling its a matter that they don't want to do it. Sorry, otherwise thought it was a successful engagement.
Response from Northern Virginia Deck & Fence

"I called and spoke with our client to thank him for his business and for this review. Before I called I did speak to my lead Foreman and our Sales Rep so that I could be briefed. They explained to me that when our client asked us about the leak to his shed roof we did inform him that this type of work was not under our purview as we don't do any type of roofing. The deck that we worked on was above the shed & not in contact, we replaced some railing on this deck as well as some other work that was not near the shed so it was not the belief that we did anything to cause a leak to the shed below the deck. I had an excellent conversation with our client and he explained to me that the shed was built years ago & the contractor subcontracted the work after promising that they would not and the roof had a leak when it was first built. But that after calling enough times the original contractor finally did come back to fix and used a rubber product to stop the leak. It seems that after all these years this rubber has worn out and needs fixed or replaced. I took the time to explain that the reason we could not do any roof repairs to a shed is simply because we specialize in decks & fences and I do not subcontract our work so I just don't have anyone on my crew who has roofing experience so I did not want to undertake something for which we lack expertise. Further I explained that while yes we do build about 2-3 sheds a year in those cases we are building a brand new shed from scratch and thus we can be confident in the project and in those cases we do hire a professional roofer to do the roofs but that it would not be prudent for us to start doing stand alone roof repairs. Finally I mentioned that we have found a good handyman company that has really helped us a lot for such minor things as when we damage a screen during a deck demo or what not so I gave the information of this handyman company to our client and I wished him good luck with them hoping that they could fix the leak on the roof of his shed."

Great experience. Small outfit, very responsive. Estimator dropped off samples in advance of our I had a chance to study-up on my options before our appointment. They secured the building permit and scheduled the inspections. Crews showed up on time, worked efficiently. Very happy with the quality of the work.

We hired Northern Virginia Fence to replace our backyard pine fence and two gates. The representative provided a very clear estimate and was responsive to all phone calls and emails. The estimator was very professional (and punctual). The quoted price was competitive (although it was not the lowest). Because DC weather was abnormally wet and unpredictable, it did take extra time to schedule the fence installation. The job took two days to complete. One year later, the fence still looks great. The gates work very well.

My credentials: retired engineering/ construction engineer with 40 years experience. I only write reviews for exceptionally good or bad work. I researched about six firms, selected from BBB and Angie’s List reviews. I read every review for each firm and ignored those I felt to be unreasonable to get a short list of preferred contractors. I then selected the fence style I thought I wanted and asked for bids. Afterwards, I refined my choice of fence style and wrote my own, “Scope of Work,” and asked for comments from those on my “short list.” I picked Northern Virginia Deck and Fence because they: Were licensed bonded and insured. Had favorable reviews on Angie’s List. Were a local firm with their own construction team. Knew their stuff. Value their reputation: see their response to the single critical review they received from someone for whom they did not even work!! One of couple prepared to address and resolve every issue in my, “Scope of Work.” The contract essentially consisted of agreed price, scope and schedule- nothing turns me off more than multi-paragraph legalese. Results: The Project Manager kept me constantly updated during the pre-construction phase. The two man construction team did everything efficiently and correctly- a pleasure to watch them. The extra out-of-scope work I requested was reasonably priced. We have a beautiful fence which exceeds our expectations. Good luck with your project.

NV Deck & Fence did an outstanding job on our fence replacement. When we called them they promptly scheduled an appointment to look at the job, came when they promised, and promptly provided an estimate (which was very reasonable). The work was done in only a day and a half and the finished product met all our expectations. While pulling out the old fence and installing the new they were very careful of all the plants adjacent to the fence which resulted in little or no damage to the plants. They did an excellent job cleaning up the job site when they were done. I would use this company again and can recommend them to others looking for fence installation.

After some initial back and forth the fence work went extremely smoothly, especially since it was a non-traditional fence design utilizing horizontal boards with two different widths. The fence installation was done quickly and took 1.5 days. The on-site crew was great and worked closely with me to take into account last minute changes to account for grades in the yard. Very pleased with the work.

The bottom line is it went very well. The original quote of approximately $7,500 was modified when it became obvious that more work was needed to meet the Fairfax County building code for decks. NOVA Deck & Fence recommended bringing down the entire deck and replace everything with Trex as described above, attach the deck more securely to the house, add upright beams, bring the floor beams closer together (a code requirement), add lighting on the new stairs. The Fairfax County inspectors were very complementary of the work performed. I am ecstatic.

1st of all I interviewed 7 or 8 companies, large ones, small, etc., but all with good reputations. I had people telling me site unseen my deck had to be torn down because its 20 years old, (the structure though was in perfect condition. I had quotea ranging from $14K for wood replacement to over $46K for Trex... Larry with Northern Virginia Deck & Fence, was very responsive and communicated very well from getting his guy here to do the estimate and then all the way through to getting us on their schedule and getting the work done a timely fashion. The people, work and professionalism were all top notch. Their price was extremely fair and it was about what I had calculated this would cost. Their square footage estimate was only 2' off from mine! (I'm sure I was wring though) I'd recommend these guys to anyone for deck builds or upgrades like mine.

Did good job of cleaning up, removed old fence. Very responsive on estimates.  They were very professional when they were there and timely in scheduling. We did compare them to other fence companies and we thought their pricing was very fair.  They enclosed a 14,000sq ft yard. I was very happy with all their work.  They were professional all the way around.

Great. Jason (estimator) walked me thru process, and called me early as asked when there was a cancellation. Workers arrived on time before 8am, asked if I had any questions, & worked until they were finished. Product looks good and their clean up was appreciated.

I contracted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence to build a deck on the back of my townhouse back in 2009.  I was a young, new homeowner but no dummy, so I had 3 companies come out and provide me with an estimate. Two of those other estimates were higher in cost and came with a high pressure salesman.  However, I did my research before-hand regarding the approximate cost AND wasn't comfortable using either of these other companies.

So I contacted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence.  It was a small business and not one of these big deck companies. The business owner Larry came out himself and provided me with a no pressure estimate and was honest and knowledgeable.  He quoted me a fair price, about $1,000 to $1,500 less than the other guys.  He was organized, prompt, and a down to earth, hard-working type guy so I felt comfortable using his company.

Once I agreed to the contract and was on the schedule, he was very good at keeping communication open and let me know when to expect his crew since there were some weather delays.  I had Larry pull all of the necessary building permits since I didn't have time to get out to the county to do so myself.  His crew was prompt every morning and Larry came by everyday to check on the progress and quality of workmanship.

I was extremely happy with the results.  Everything went so well that the following year I had Larry and his company build a lower level deck to complete my back yard.  I would recommend using NoVa D&F if you are looking for a fair price with excellent results.

We needed to have our rear fence replaced, and I selected four companies based on AL reviews, discounting what I judged as unwarranted low grades.  I solicited bids via AL with a Statement of Work, site plat, and pictures of the existing fence attached.  I followed up with a direct email to those I hadn't heard from after two business days.  Two companies arranged for site visits and followed up with proposals; two others provided estimates without a site visit.  I evaluated the companies based foremost on responsiveness to the SOW.  Other aspects in order of importance included management factors, email and voice communications, warranty services, cost, incentives, and payment terms.

Northern Virginia Deck & Fence (100% A's & B's) responded a couple days after the solicitation was launched.  After I resent the SOW (AL seems to drop attachments from time to time), we scheduled a site visit.  The site visit was exactly what I expected; all of my questions were answered satisfactorily, and the representative handed me the cost proposal as he was leaving.

The proposal was reasonable and very competitive.  The evaluations of NV Deck & Fence and its closest competitor were nearly identical, both receiving top or near-top scores in all of my evaluation factors.  The determining factor turned out to be one with a lesser priority:  NV Deck & Fence's cost proposal was the lower, both before and after applying discounts.

My only hesitation was that NV Deck & Fence has only two or three crews.  Nevertheless, the project began consistent with the projected start date.  The crew consisted of two workers, who completed about 80% of the project the first day and wrapped it up the following morning.  They did a fantastic job:  The fence is solid and straight, it looks great, and the gate opens and closes easily with no indications of future binding.  The representative encouraged me several times to call them if any adjustments needed to be made, including after the warranty period had expired!

The only negative aspect of this project was a minor one.  NV Deck & Fence will add a 3% surcharge for using a credit card unless the transactions occur in their office.  I was willing to make the trips for the 50% down payment and final payment in order to avoid the surcharge.

I highly recommend Northern Virginia Deck & Fence and would use them again without reservation.

Working with Northern Virginia Deck and Fence has been a breeze from the first time I called.  Everyone I have worked with or spoken to has been responsive and professional.  I got two quotes for the fence, and I went with NVD&F because their quote came in the lower, and because they seemed much more professional and friendly than the other company.  I have been impressed as NVD&F has used top quality supplies and has performed top quality work.  My fence is exactly as I dreamed it would be!!  A fence is a big investment, and I am THRILLED that I trusted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence.

They were outstanding, as always. They had built a wood fence and composite deck at our previous home, as well as regular fence repair from falling trees as that house backed to woods. So we called Larry again to build the fence and deck stairs at our new home when we moved. The fence is aluminum on the front of the property with multiple gates and wood on the side and back. Part of the fence had to be finished several months later as we were building a pool. The quality of the work was top notch, they were always on time and their crew worked quickly and hard. Their price was also one of the lowest. We will continue to use them for all deck and fence work and cannot recommend them highly enough.

I received an email that they would be getting in touch with me soon.  I then received another email, from the President of the company, informing me that they do work in Prince William county but, "because of [their] location and [my] location, all bid estimates are done via email."  I was then asked to provide the elevation of my deck and the way it was secured (to the house or not), along with other questions about the deck.  The same email directed me to another website to look at fencing and to select the one I wanted to go with.
SERIOUSLY?
Exactly what could I expect from this company that can't be bothered to drive to my home to give me an estimate?  Customer Service is a foreign concept here.  This is how a company actually does business in 2014?  This company obviously does not want to do any business in Prince William County.  Save yourself the aggravation and don't bother contacting them for anything.
Response from Northern Virginia Deck & Fence

"For prospective customers outside of a 20 minute radius we offer an initial estimate via email if they are interested. We were very polite with this member, she elected to not have us provide an estimate for her as she needed an onsite consultation. This is understandable and we certainly wish her the best of luck, she is beyond our onsite estimators service area and if this offended her I apologize however I have offered to prepare email estimates to prospective clients outside of our immediate radius for years and no one has ever had an issue with this, until just now for whatever reason. For us to effectively service the areas that comprise 95% of our business, which are Alexandria, Arlington, Annandale, Springfield, Burke, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Great Falls, Lorton and Fairfax it is prudent for us to limit our onsite appointments to these areas. If this offended this member that is unfortunate but we can not spend hours in traffic to prepare one proposal when we could do multiple appointments close to our office. We focus our energy on the areas that we work every day, I regret this offended her and I have updated our Angie's List profile to not include Prince William county simply because of this member. This is unfortunate because we have done many projects in Prince William county for years and everyone else has understood the dynamic of us preparing the initial estimate via email, or they simply were courteous and moved forward in another direction. We very much appreciate Angie's List and look forward to remaining with this service, however I will say that we were not aware that anyone whom we never worked for or even met for an estimate would be posting trivial complaints that get positioned right next to the postings of our actual clients, all of whom are very happy, I feel this is simply not appropriate. Our reviews should be from homeowners who have done business with us, not from someone who is offended because it would take us over an hour in traffic to get to her location. So for anyone in Prince William county who would be offended as this member was, I would wish them the best of luck and I would be courteous. For us to maintain a tight control on matters, effectively bid our projects, and service our customers as we always have it is prudent for us to not go beyond a radius for estimates as traffic in this area makes this not prudent. I look forward to more reviews, hopefully from members who we have done business with and we will continue to meet or exceed your expectations. In this day and age of how busy we all are......... at least that I am as a business owner working 90-100 hour weeks I find it trivial for those who deem it prudent to bash businesses online simply because we are not near them and don't travel that far to meet them, yet we were courteous, gave her the option of having us prepare the proposal, and followed our standard practice by informing them from the outset of our protocol. Perhaps some have an abundance of spare time to spend online, I do not and would prefer to not be allocating any of my time responding to those who we have not done business with and simply wish to complain. I do wish this member the best of luck on her project and all the best moving forward."

Upon my follow up phone call to find out when they were coming out to provide the estimate, I was told that they do not travel to Prince William County for estimates.  I would have to give them specifications over the telephone or via email.  Sorry, I do not do business with a contractor with whom I cannot see their face or witness their body language.

While the initial build-out of the fence was crooked and didn't follow the property line, the owner followed up with me to get the situation rectified.  They rebuilt the enclosure to be symmetric and in-line with the property lines and neighbor's fencing.  We are completely satisfied and will look to do business with this company in the future should the need arise.
