My roof turned out to be about twice the size as covered by the coupon and and had a pitch much steeper. However, Tom priced the differences fairly and proceeded to do the work. Perfection is the word I would use for the quality of the job. Tom even came back to see me on a Saturday to make sure I was satisfied. The entire work crew was punctual, courteous, and careful to leave the grounds how they found them. This was an outstanding overall contracting experience. I give Lyons, Tom and his crew my highest praise.

Tom Petrelli was always punctual and called if he was running late...never more than 10 minutes. At our appointed time, he described the product and service he could provide and gave us a written estimate. He answered all of our questions completely and was honest with the assessment he made of what we would need to have done to replace the roof. There were no surprises or hidden charges. He made repeated trips back to us with shingle samples until I decided on one. Once my final decision was made, the supplies were ordered and tom gave us an estimated date for delivery of materials. Although he didn't do downspouts, gutters and gutter covers, he shared his expertise about various products and said he could arrange for someone to do that work if that is what we wanted. All of the roofing materials were delivered early the morning before work was to start. The delivery guys were professional and polite. The morning the job was to begin, it looked like it was going to rain. There was a half hour delay before work started (8:45 a.m.). After two layers of old shingles were removed, they discovered the plywood was dried out and desintegrating. That was something Tom said may occur when he walked on the roof before he prepared the estimate. The men worked tirelessly all day and the last truck left the driveway at 6:00 p.m. The yard was left the way it was found before the job started, and the roof was complete. Tom was back and forth to the job during the day, making sure work was progressing according to plan. Tom said the gutters wold be installed the next day. At 7:30 a.m. the next morning, the gutter guy arrived. He was professional and worked with just one helpter and cut and installed gutters, downspouts and gutter covers. They finished and were gone by noon. This was the best home improvement job experience ever and we are more than pleased with the new roof. Kudos to Tom and his reliable crew.

We saw Angie's Big Deal Coupon offer for a new roof from Lyons Contracting, Inc. We had some questions as to whether we would meet all the requirements set out in the coupon, so we contacted Tom Petrilli with our questions. Almost immediately, he came out and addresses our questions. We signed a contract for the work to be done and less that a week after purchasing the Coupon, Tom and his crew were working on our new roof. Before the work began, Tom told us how to prepare for the job by covering all items in the attic so they would not have the dust nd grit fall on them. He told us about vibrations that would occur during the roofing and how to secure items that may fall. The crew was very punctual, arriving at 7:30a.m. to start the job. They worked steadily and carefully throughout the entire day. After the job was done, their clean-up of the debris was incredible. They even went over the house and windows with airbrooms to make sure there was no dirt and/or grit on any surface. The yard was left in a wonderfully clean condition. They were finished by 5:00p.m. They were so kind and careful of our yard, that as they were driving the truck with the debris in it out of the gate, one of the crew members went over and held back the branches of a small tree that we have so that the truck would not accidently break any of the branches. Great job, beautiful roof, happy homeowners!

I called Lyons Contracting in early July and received a very fair quote about 1 week later. Tom, the President of the Company, was very forthright and easy to work with. Once I let him know that we decided to go with Lyons Contracting, he let me know the process and scheduled a date for my new roof to be replaced. His crew was in and out in one day and left no trace of their work (other than a brand new roof!). I would definitely recommend Lyons Contracting for their promptness, fairness and overall quality of work/ clean-up.

After our roof was blown off in a huge storm, we immediately contacted our insurance company and began the process of fixing our home. We came across Lyons Contracting on Angie’s List and saw on their website that they had a lot of experience in flat roofs. After talking to Tom, he explained a number of different options and pointed us to a page on his website that went point by point though the process of installing our roof of choice. We were immediately relieved with his expertise and attentiveness helping us to understand his suggestions. He came by to look at the condition of the roof the day after we first contacted him and he provided us with options and estimates a few hours later. We had the roof installed a few days later and everything went very smoothly. Both he and his foreman arrived on time and kept us apprised of their progress throughout the day. When the project was wrapped up Tom sent us two emails full of pictures of our roof at all stages of the install and our backyard was immaculate. Even after the job was completed, he would answer miscellaneous questions over email in a matter of hours and worked with us to make sure our insurance company had all the information they needed. We would recommend Tom, as he is reliable, experienced, and responsive - and we have a fantastic new roof to prove it.
Description of Work: Our existing flat roof was removed and hauled away, roof decking was repaired and a new Thermoplastic Olefin roof was installed. We also had a SolaTube installed as a skylight-alternative in our upstairs bathroom.

Simply outstanding service throughout. My phone calls and email messages were responded to immediately. An appointment was made with Tom Petrilli, and he arrived right on time. He was both professional and warm, and these qualities were present in every subsequent interaction. We surveyed the project, and an estimate was sent the very next day. Tom emailed me the roof color options. I delayed the installation because I could not settle on the color. I emailed Tom with the colors I was thinking of, and he delivered samples that were placed on my old roof to look at. I finally chose a color, and within a day or two the rook was installed. I will absolutely use Lyons Contracting for any subsequent roofing needs I might have.

This was a positive experience from start to finish. The material was delivered on time and the installers came on time. They finished the job in one day although they had to come back the next morning for some cleanup. I am very meticulous but the owner (Tom Petrilli) was even more meticulous than I am and he ensured that everything was cleaned up and left looking great. Everyone was polite and responsive and the roof looks great. I would absolutely recommend Lyons Contracting without hesitation and if I ever need another roof I would go with them again.
Description of Work: We had a leak in the upstairs bathroom. Lyons Contracting (Mike) came and looked at the entire roof and took photographs - very helpful as we have a VERY tall roof. He showed us several areas that had issues including nail holes in almost all of the shingles. We discussed the options for replacing or repairing the roof. He explained things in a way that made sense. As we plan to stay in the house for 10-plus years, we decided that it made sense to go ahead and replace the roof with upgraded shingles. We had gotten another estimate/opinion but Lyons was much more knowledgeable.

Tom Petrilli and his associate,Mike Simpson, really love roofing! You can tell by the way they talk about it with such knowledge and enthusiasm! I had had a flat, EPDM rubber membrane roof, which was only 7 years old. It had been leaking at various times for the entire 7 years and I always felt that the company that installed it did not install it properly since they were never able to fix the leaks. I found Lyons on Angie's list and was very impressed with Mike Simpson when he came to give me estimates to both repair and ieplace my roof. I decided to replace my entire roof for $9,873. Tom Petrilli was super to communicate with via email and answered all my questions and addressed my concerns very promptly & thoroughly. The day of the work the crew arrived first and then Tom. Tom stayed and worked all day long until it got dark. This impressed me, Not many owners even show up at a work-site these days never mind to do some actual work!. They finished up the work the next morning. They cleaned up after themselves and took all the old roofing away -- did not leave a trace or any debris behind, which is very important to me and the sign of a conscientious and respectful owner. And now I have a brand new white reinforced TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing membrane covering my entire townhouse! I am so happy with my new roof -- I actually welcome rain storms now! And I can sleep at night without worry! Tom and his team do such excellent work that I have complete confidence in them and can highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I had my flat, black EPDM rubber roof replaced on my townhouse with a white reinforced TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing membrane by Tom Petrilli and his team. My 7 year old roof had been leaking for 7 years and the company that installed is not capable or competent enough to fix it. I finally gave up on them and found Lyons on Angie's List and I am glad I did. The 7-year old roof cost me $10,000 when it was new so I felt I had to stick it out with that company for a while. But enough was enough. it was worth it to me to replace the roof and spend another $9,873 for peace of mind.

The workmen arrived on time, did the promised work, and cleaned up after themselves. It couldn't have been easier for me. Tom made it easy to communicate via email and I never had a worry about the work getting done in a fantastic manner. They did a great job and I'd happily work with them again.
Description of Work: A tree had fallen on my roof during the hurricane back in October. Tom Petrelli came out and did an estimate in November to replace my roof as well as an estimate on my neighbor's side of the duplex--the roof was old enough to be due for replacement for both of us. The estimate was extremely reasonable and we both jumped at the chance to get the work done, including adding gutter guards to the project.

We had a leak in our roof, so after looking around on Angie's List we called Lyons. They sent someone out to look at the issue. The gentleman was polite, but didn't even get on the roof to look for the issue. he looked from the ground and said it had to be our vent and gave us a verbal quote of ~$800 to replace the vent and flashing. We mentioned that our roof was pretty old and probably needs replaced anyways - could we also get a quote for a complete replace so we could decide if we want to do that now. He said sure, he would email it to us and gave me an email address so I could contact him. I emailed him immediately so he would be able to respond and got a response back from the owner saying the tech he sent out didn't have access to email, so please just call him. Well, long story short - I never heard back with a quote or follow-up. Also had three other contractors come out and it ended up it was not the vent, we had holes in through the shingles (possible hail but more likely the previous owners had nailed down a cord). So not only did he not get back to me, but by not going onto the roof he didn't actually diagnose our issue and we could have just wasted the $800 not fixing the issue.
Description of Work: Had Lyons come out to determine leak source and get quote for repair/replacement

I'm sorry we didn't follow up with you six months ago when we looked at your roof; this doesn't seem like our style of operation. Since it was so long ago, no one here has an accurate memory of the actual events so I won't even attempt to explain. The reviewer must have an incredible memory. I've learned that negative reviews are much more likely to be read than positive reviews; so I'm going to use this space to try to do some good in the world. My D rating from this person is nothing compared to the horrific and brutal conditions that children in Uganda are living under right now. Rape, murder, sexual enslavement, purposeful disfiguring of faces- all being committed against children; these crimes are often committed by other children that have been kidnapped and turned into soldiers as young as 7 years old. I have a 7 year old son, he's afraid of puppets; I couldn't imagine him living in a hell like this. Please google Joseph Kony and Lord's Resistance Army, read about these unfathomable crimes committed against children and hopefully you will be as sickened as I was. Then write a letter to any lawmaker you can and ask them to continue to support the Northern Uganda Recovery Act. Some of you reading this work in government, please do what you can to keep the US military advisors in place until Joseph Kony is arrested and the LRA is stopped. Two weeks ago I sent back a plate of food at a restaurant because the fries were cold; a week ago I read about Uganda and was over come with embarrassment about what I had done. We are so lucky to live where we live and how we live. There are people out there that truly need help, little kids, just like the ones you know need help. Thanks for reading and thanks to Angie's List for allowing me to use my response space, I will not make a habit of it. Tom

Overall the job was a complete success, The guys were nothing but professional you wouldn't even know they had been there to replace the roof as there was nothing disturbed in the yard. Not a single piece of the old roof was on the ground. They went above and beyond in the finishing touches on the roof as well. Tom made a new furnace cap - to replace the old rusted out one. They sealed the existing fan vent and even put a fresh coat of paint on the black trim. Something that wasn't expected but greatly appreciated. I have nothing but good things to say about Tom, Mike and the crew from Lyons Contracting and would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Mike from Lyons Contracting came out to assess a leak in my roof on the 12/10/2011 - he found the cause of the leak - a nail had worked its way up from the old roof. And found some other danger spots while he was up there. Including missing shingles, and a rusted out furnace cap. He gave me an estimate of the quick repairs and an estimate for the entire roof. Mike came back the next day and made the initial spot repairs - patched up the hole and replaced the few missing shingles. I was on the schedule for a full roof repair for the beginning of January. Sure enough Tom Petrilli called and said I was on the schedule for Friday, January 13th if that fit my schedule - so needless to say the entire job was finished on that Friday.

It went very well overall. I was very impressed with Tom Petrelli and his crew. They worked hard, were efficient and respectful of the property. At the outset, Tom was the only one of three bidders who identified, without my volunteering it, a problem area on our roof. (It was an area I was concerned about, and neither of the other bidders mentioned it.) His attention to detail is excellent. (As an example: we have a TV satellite dish on our roof. When Tom's crew remounted it after replacing the roof, we didn't have to call the satellite company to reset the position of the dish! Tom couldn't guarantee that would be the case, but it was pretty cool when it happened!) The work was done very well, on time, on budget. Scheduling the work was challenging because the county scheduled street repairs and closed our street the day before work on our roof was to begin. I called Tom and he was very flexible with rescheduling. He was easy to work with and his communications with us were excellent. Tom's bid was slightly higher than the others, so I'd give him a B+. But we also got peace of mind with him doing the work, and what is that worth? The problem area on the roof, where water would kind of sit, drains so much better now! Very importantly, Tom Petrelli is a man of his word. He cares a lot about making sure the job is done right. In the time he was here, I felt confident about his integrity. I would definitely use Lyons Contracting again.

Member, We switched to a google calendar to schedule appointments; it was supposed to show all of our schedules and availability and update across all phones and computers. We have since abandonned the communal calendar because of problems like this; the day before and after your appointment I missed two others- the other clients called to check to see if I was still coming when their appointment time came and went. Calling to find out where your roofer is certainly isn't your duty. Anyone who's ever hired me has given me an A rating, I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet; but I will be working extra hard to bury this F under another pile of A's. Good luck and I hope you are happy and able to give an A to whoever you hired and that you can leave your anger in the past. Tom

First, let me say that if you read nothing else here, Lyons did a great job, I would hire them again although I suspect I may not own the house the next time it needs to be replaced since everything's supposedly warranteed for many many years. There are probably many competent roofing contractors out there. Some may have even given me estimates on my house (I got a couple). But none were quite like Lyons Contracting. Start with their web site--which is how I stumbled onto them the first time. They have a roofer's blog on their website with lots of pictures and lots of interesting roofing challenges. It's clear these guys are good at what they do, they like challenges. And then I found it, in their blog, a chronology with pictures of a re-roof job on a 1930s brick colonial in Arlington. It wasn't mine, or even in my neighborhood, but it looked close enough to my house that I took notice. And not just, "yeah, we did it" but a whole tome about the way the roof timbers on these houses are constructed and how they can take lots of nails, etc. While other roofers sites were full of glossy pictures of 4,000 square foot McMansions with complicated rooflines and fancy fake-slate-look shingles, here was somebody that was saying, hey, these old houses are great and I like doing them. Best marketing tool in the world. (If you look deeper in the blog there are several like that). It's clear from their site and the reviews I have been able to find here on Angies and elsewhere that these guys are good and like what they do. I called them initially about a roof leak whereby the side shed-roof for the patio had started to separate from the house enough to let water in (perhaps because of the earthquake, I am not sure). But I knew in my heart the roof was old and probably needed replacement (the home inspector had told us 5 years previously upon buying the house that we had about 5 years left...). Mike Simpson (who is Lyons repair specialist) came out and ascertained the problem and very quickly informed me that the porch roof was so old it would probably be a waste to do much of a repair without replacing it altogether. And it would be most cost effective to replace the whole roof. Sure, it was an "upsell" but I knew he was right. He then told me a lot about how these houses were constructed, and how there probably weren't many problems underneath (although he couldn't tell for sure of course). He did say one interesting thing in his sales pitch--about how 1930s houses with their slatted construction (instead of plywood) require a more careful attention when nailing in the nails and not a lot of roofing companies train their people to take the time not to just shoot nails into the airspace between boards. Seemed an interesting point, but one that I had noted many times from inside the attic with the previous roof. Mike had Tom (the owner) put together a replacemetn propoposal for me, which Tom forwarded to me within a few days via email. I did get a couple of other estimates (using some recommendations from others) but I felt that unless their price came in horribly high my decision had largely been made. His price actually came in lower than the other two written bids I got (i got another lower bid over the phone but never saw any contract). We had some shceduling challenges because of the weather but that affects all roofers. Tom kept me informed each day, talked me through all the color choices, etc. and answered all my questions patiently via email. Finally, after several rainouts, the crew arrived one morning about 8:15. Tom was not there at first, but his foreman got the crew going and they had 90% of the old roof off before I came back from dropping the kids off at school. They worked feverishly and about 2 hours later I went outside to check on progress and they were mostly done with the main roof already. The entire crew of about 6 or 7 was friendly and they kept working away, finishing up a little before 2. They did a great job cleaning up all the mess of the old roof. Tom was in and out during the day to check on things. Bottom line is that Tom (and Mike) really like roofs. I mean, they clearly have found a way to make money doing it, but it's clear these guys like what they do and are more than happy to show off their work. Tom spent almost an hour with me later that afternoon (yes, he had come to pick up his check, but this was after I had paid him) telling me all sorts of things about the shingles, the roof, the house in general, etc. It's clear he likes roofs, and he loves talking about copper flashing. I say this not as a bad thing--no far from it--isn't this the guy you WANT making your copper flashing (which, by the way, looks fabulous)? He followed up with me a few days later as well, and he'll be back in a year to check up on everything. All in all, a great experience. I almost hate to admit to Tom I don't care much about roofs and shingles but I am glad that he does. And my house does look much better.

I will give this contractor serious consideration when it comes to for roof/gutter replacement.
Description of Work: As my roof is getting old and the gutters behaved poorly during Hurricanes Irene and Lee, I left messages with two companies to examine the situation for determining whether it was time for replacements. Of course, the timing was inappropriate on my part as people with leaks and roof damage were undoubtedly given much higher priority. Therefore it is just a little understandable that after two weeks, my call still hasn't been answered by the other roofer. However, Tom Petrilli of Lyons Contracting called the very next day and came one week later. He very honestly assessed that there was no urgent need to replace the roof and he actually fixed the problems with the gutters at no cost. He sent me an estimate for replacements and a promise to keep me updated as those estimates increase with time.

Tom discussed a number of options for consideration concerning my gutters as well as the roof. He gave me honest and candid feedback about whether some of the options were even necessary. I highly recommend Lyons Consulting based on my experience and interactions. Top notch service all around; no complaints whatsoever.
Description of Work: Thought I had a leak in the roof but Tom helped diagnose over the phone that my A/C unit drains were clogged (unit is in the attic). He was right. He told me to feel free to get back in touch after the A/C repairman came in case I needed anything else. A day later I asked him to come out and check my roof and gutters a few days in advance of Hurricane Irene approaching. Even though we were having spotty rain showers (not associated with the hurricane) the day of the appointment, he kept in touch about delays in his arrival due to the weather. I appreciated his prompt calls because it kept me from wasting time. He inspected my roof and cleaned the gutters on the spot, and the gutters were a mess--I had no idea they were as badly clogged as they were. He wasn't even expecting to clean my gutters but did so once he saw how badly they needed it. I thank him for this as the reports are we are going to get tons of rain from the hurricane.

Lyons' president Tom Petrilli allowed ample time to answer all of our questions about what would be included and what additional charges might be encountered if rotted decking was encountered (which it was in one small area). The work was completed in one day, right on schedule, and all work was performed in a high quality manner. There was no sign of any of the old roof and it was removed and placed in the truck with meticulous precision. This was for my dad's house and he qualified for a 10% senior discount. Overall we are extremely happy with the end result.
Description of Work: Lyons Contracting performed a tear off of two layers of shingles and roof replacement. We had gotten three estimates and they were all quite close in price.

From start to finish, our experience with Tom and Lyons Contracting was excellent. We got three other estimates for the roof repair and Tom was the only person who 1) called us back right away and 2) actually got on our roof and took pictures of the problems to show us. The work was scheduled to take place within a week of the estimate. Tom's team showed up right on time and finished same day. Tom sent us pictures of their progress throughout the day since my husband and I were both at work. When we got home, we couldn't even tell that they had been there, except that the roof was fixed. It has been a month since the work was done and we have not experienced any more leaks.
Description of Work: Replaced low pitch section of roof with new membrane roof.

Tom Petrilli, the owner, was very easy to get along with. After the initial inspection and estimate, I dealt directly with him by email and phone. We had some delays due to weather and my travel, but when he found an opening the crew showed up on time and worked all day and into the early evening. One small task remained for followup the next day and again Tom was on the scene. He took many pictures of the job before, during and after so I could see what they had to deal with and what the finished job looked like. He said that if there were any issues with the work, call him immediately and I'm sure he meant that. As my grades for the work indicate, I was pleased with the entire project and can unqualifiedly recommend Lyons Contracting to anyone.
Description of Work: Replaced entirely a flat rubber topped roof covering one-half of townhouse, including two skylights and chimney, vents, etc. Due to water damage, some underlying wood base was also replaced.

They tacked down a couple loose shingles damaged in the high winds and repaired nail holes and flashing. Also, put back in several loose gutter guards.
Description of Work: We thought we needed a new roof, but they suggested repairing it because it should last another 5 years. That saved us money and was very helpful.

This experience could not have gone better. They came exactly when they said they would - no excuses. Tom Petrilli explained in detail the entire process and why their product was a good fit for our needs and how it would work. He was patient with questions and felt confident in his product and workforce. On the day of installation, we received email updates of work done and if there were any obstacles or unexpected issues. He sent pictures of the work being done and final clean-up which was impeccable. Tom and his company condected themselves as professionally as any company I've worked with.

Excellent responsivness and service overall. Relatively few roofing contractors in this area are available for emergency repairs, but Lyons is -- and they came through for me in less than 18 hours from my initial call. I got one other estimate for the repair, and that outfit's bid was more than twice the price of Lyons's final price -- and besides, they couldn't tackle it for several more days. Still, the overall price I paid Lyons initially struck me as steep -- but considering how quickly they got my roof weather-sealed and then permanently repaired, it was well worth it! The owner, who took my initial call, assured me he'd send a knowledgable foreman to make the estimate -- and he sure did! The foreman was expert at diagnosing the cause of the repair and its solution -- and with no assistance from any crew, he quickly made my roof weather-tight and made the final repair as soon as the weather allowed. I'd recommend Lyons to anyone needing quick, reliable, quality service for their roof.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced wind-damaged shingles from 2 locations on front roof (approx. 30 s.f. in total area), which had been installed in 1999. Responding promptly to my request for emergency service after the 2/25 windstorm, the contractor installed temporary shingles of a different color on 2/26 to weather-seal the roof while he obtained permanent replacement shingles to match the rest of the roof. The contractor installed these on 3/2 -- the earliest break in the weather after he got the permanent shingles -- and left me the unused portion of the pack of replacement shingles he'd obtained.

Originally, I needed to have a ventilation system for the roof installed because the extreme heat and cold would do a number on my roof and require that I have to get it replaced sooner rather than later Initially, the contractor called me and rescheduled the estimate appointment as he had to go to the doctor. I could understand that because medical problems happen. I was very happy the fact he called right away and offered some quick alternatives and was very apologetic about the whole mess. He came over a few days later when I had some time and explained to me the costs and the benefits of a couple of roof vent options that I had heard about. He encouraged me to talk to some other contractors and research what they said. But, I had already done my research. I liked the fact that there was no pressure for me to get the deposit and give a go ahead. During my initial roof inspection, he noticed some bubbling and that some shingles had fallen off. He said that while he's up there he'll get that fixed as well tout suite. It was all external work and because they didn't need to be let inside, I did not have to be home during the installation. They told me that if there was a parking spot, they could grab that and get started with the work. Their price was just about the average of other quotes that I had received. It was in line with everything else. I am planning on using their services again in the future. They were good folks who wanted to be sure I was happy with what was done.
Description of Work: I have used the services of Lyons Contracting Incorporated on the 14th of August 2010. They replaced a couple of shingles on the roof as there was some bubble thing going on. They also installed a brand new roof ridge vent system and checked out for any irregularities with the bathroom vent tops.
