I got an estimate from Tom a couple months before as part of the negotiation process for my new home. Once we moved in it was time for the new roof. We selected the shingles and the color from the links Tom gave us. Once we decided, it took 2 weeks for the materials to come in. They delivered to our shingles to the roof a few days before the install day. Lyon's crew came on time the day of the work with a crew of eight. They covered our bushes against debris. They really hustled. The existing roof was off in 1 1/2 hours! We were lucky as the amount plywood to be replaced was in the allowance in the estimate. The project was completed in 6 hours time. The crew were conscientious and cleaned up after themselves well. The whole experience went better than I could have expected. There has been no rework to date. I would definitely recommend them to anyone I wished to remain friends with.

I knew this was going to be expensive, so I looked for a Big Deal that might help me reduce the cost if possible. Lyons had a good rating and lived up to that rating. Tom contacted me soon after I purchased the deal to set up a time for an estimate. He arrived on time, talked to me about the house and area, took a look at the roof and broke the news about the condition of the roof as gently as he could. I got the estimate in the next few days and handled the contract and scheduling by email. The crew was there for four full days in the cold but when they were done they cleaned up and we didn't find any nails. The roof looks great, better color shingles than were on the house before, and the new roof makes the house much quieter in bad weather and feel solid. The crew cleaned up as best they could while they were working and on the last day went around the house completely to pick up nails and debris. We just had one problem during the job when the crew put a tarp to collect shingles and felt over a corner of one flowerbed that had some dwarf butterfly bushes planted there which squashed the plants. We knew they were there because we planted them but the plants were hard to see because the beds were mulched and I think the crew just didn't see anything was planted there. I did point this out to Tom and he ordered replacement bushes for us which took care of that.
Description of Work: Lyons removed the old shingles, felt and most of the plywood on the main roof, garage roof and porch, and removed the old shingles and felt on the family room and attached porch, removed and replaced the flashing around two chimneys and along the porch edges. (The house was built in 1962 and the roof had been reshingled in 1987.) The plywood needed to be replaced because it was in very poor condition and we had had leaks in a couple of places in the main part of the house. Since the 1987 work gutter guards had been added and they removed these and placed them back on the gutters after reroofing. In the ceiling of the attached porch water damage had gone through the plywood to the interior of the ceiling and they removed and replaced the plywood and the wood on the ceiling. The seam between old and new ceiling is barely visible, or will be once that section is stained.

The estimate appears to have been honest, and was consistent with the fine print in the "Big Deal." Given the significant additional cost, we got estimates from more roofers -- and decided to use another contractor with a total estimate of $9000. Most line estimates for the materials to be used, services to be provided, etc. were comparable -- except for the cost of removing a second layer of shingles. We do feel that Lyon's was professional, punctual, willing to answer questions, etc; our decision solely came down to price -- and esp the price to remove the 2nd layer of shingles.
Description of Work: We purchased a "big deal" for $6499.99 for up to 2000 square feet of roof replacement. However, in evaluating our roof size, slope, condition, etc., the contracting estimated that the total job would, in fact, cost closer to $11000.

There’s some confusion here; I’m looking at your proposal and I see your price is $9,542.00…not $11,000.00. When I first went to the property the customer (I don’t know if I should use last names) asked me to look at another building on the property and include it in my proposal. A few days later he asked me to remove the cost for the other building and I issued him another proposal which was substantially lower. This may be where the confusion lays- Customer might be looking only at the original proposal which has the main house roof and the roof for the other building. It sounds like they’ve already hired another contractor and I wish them luck with the new roof- but I think there’s a miscommunication between Mr and Mrs.

Our roof was damaged in a recent storm and we sought estimates from a number of local companies. With Lyons the estimate process was quick and easy and Tom (Lyons Contracting) was able to provide details of necessary State Codes to our insurance company to ensure that they and we fully understood the work needed. Thanks to Tom's diligence and agreement to communicate directly with the insurance company, the insurance company agreed to cover the full costs of replacing our roof. Tom sent us shingle samples before the work commenced and was quick to respond to queries. The work itself went as scheduled, the team arrived on time and worked diligently. They discovered additional rotted wood during their work and took photos to email us to seek consent before removing and replacing the wood. The work was finished in a little over a day and the team cleaned up well before leaving. We now have a lifetime warranty on the roof so hopefully will not be needing Lyons again but we would certainly recommend them to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: Lyons removed and replaced all of the shingle on our roof, they also replaced rotted wood that was revealed during the work. The result appears to be excellent.

Tom at Lyons Contracting was incredibly responsive and professional from the very beginning when I contacted him for an estimate to replace the roof. Our decision came down to two bids and Lyon's was not the lowest, but Tom gave us the confidence that he could work with the city to get the permit to start the project right away and his responsiveness, passion and knowledge for roofing made us feel that we would be very happy with the process and the end product. Once the project began, Tom was very responsive to any questions we had and often emailed pictures of the progress being made on the roof. His roofing team was also very professional and curteous. Once the roof, gutters and downspouts had been replaced, we discovered after the first rain that there was a small leak in one of the new gutters and Tom came out and resolved the issue right away. In the end we have a beautiful copper roof and were very pleased with the whole experience. This the best contracting experience we have had and would highly recommend Lyons Contracting to anyone looking for roofing services.

The owner Tom Petrilli arranged to meet me at the house to look at the roof and provide an estimate on a full replacement. I had seen the comapny's name on Angie's list and that there was a current deal that the company was running. The deal didn't exactly fit my type of roof (very steep), but Tom made it work with some additional charges. I got other estimates, but liked his company, its Angie's List ratings, and the estimate the best. I'm glad I went with them! A few days after the visit, as Hurrican Sandy was barrelling towards the mid-Atlantic, I called Tom back to see if he could patch one spot on the roof that leaks in big rains -- with the promise that after the storm passed I would sign up for the roof replacement. Tom came by and did a temporary patch right before the storm rolled in -- no charge! Tom warned me that following the storm he was going to be a bit backed up with more urgent roof jobs, and that proved true. And of course there is the weather to content with - rain tends to prevent workers from going up on the roof. As promised, the workers started the job a week after Thanksgiving. He could have started sooner but he was willing to schedule it around when I could be home, at least for the start of the job. Lucky for me, the weather proved to be fantastic for the job. Tom was also great about coordinating with another crew who were doing trim work -- giving the other crew time to patch and paint trim before installing a new gutter (it's a beautiful gutter, which seems funny to say, but it is!). The workers were very nice, fast, responsive, and great at cleaning up the mess. I've seen a few nails in the yard, but that's to be expected given the huge amount of waste they pulled off the roof. Tom always called me back, and came to the job when needed. All in all, a great experience. I would highly recommend Lyons Contracting to anyone.
Description of Work: Full roof replacement of a steep roof. This involved taking off two (very old) layers of shingles. They also replaced an upper gutter and downspout that were in bad shape. They hauled away all debris.

We noticed a leak in our roof during Hurricane Sandy. Given that the storm had just gone through the air most roofing companies were too busy to quote us, but Lyons sent someone out within a day or two. They seemed very knowledge and were very responsive to calls/emails. We ultimately went with a different roofer who quoted us less than Lyons but we would not hesitate to contact Lyons if we needed anything in the future.

I had used Lyons earlier this year and had a great experience. When I had damage from Super Storm Sandy, Tom was my only call. He had already taken the measurements for the rest of my roof from when he replaced the flat roof earlier in the year. Since he already had the measurements, he turned around the estimate instantaneously. Tom made sure I didn't have any active leaks and then got me on the schedule for his next slot. The date got bumped back for some jobs that ran over, but Tom was always giving me ample heads up on the scheduled start date. He and his team came out and did an outstanding job. They figured out there were 2 layers of old shingles and they only estimated the removal of one layer. Tom said that was his fault and he wouldn't pass that additional cost on to me. He sent me pictures while I was at work showing me the progress. When I came home, I had a new roof and an immaculate yard. I couldn't be happier with my new roof and my experience with Tom and his crew.
Description of Work: Tom and his team ripped off the old shingles on two roofs and installed GAF architectural shingles with new ridge vents. They also installed two new flat roofs using a white TPO membrane.

We purchased the $6,499 Angies List deal for 2000 sqft. Our roof is 3,131 sqft and the additional sqftage was priced the same as the deal. Given the location of the power lines on our roof, the shingles could not be loaded directly onto the roof via crane which incurred additional cost of approx. $300.00. These details were explained to us by the owner, Tom Petrilli, prior to buying the deal and signing the contract. Tom was great to work with, and it was obvious to us why he's a Super Service Award winner. He was easy to get ahold of, responded quickly to messages, was upfront and straightforward, and did exactly what he promised to do. There were one or two small delays with the start date, but those were communicated to us with enough lead time that they were a non-issue. His crew was polite, worked hard and fast, protected my plant beds, and cleaned up after themselves. The project started Friday and finished up Saturday afternoon which was the time frame Tom had estimated. We were fine with the work on Saturday because, well, we wanted a new roof and the weather this time of year is variable. We are very pleased with the new roof (color: charcoal), and 3 neighbors have commented on how good it looks. We would definitely use Tom again, although this roof will probably outlast us!
Description of Work: Remove all existing roofing and haul away. Inspect roof decking and replace as needed. Install new drip edge, GAF Weather Watch waterproof underlayment, 30# underlayment, new neoprene and aluminum vent collars, GAF Timberline HD Lifetime shingles. Create/install new GAF Cobra ridge vent. Sweep yard and flower beds with magnetic nail bar.

As soon as I called Lyons Contracting, Tom came out and confirmed that the old membrane roof was probably the (undiagnosed) source of previous water damage as well as the source of water leaking out of an interior light switch. He went up to the roof right away, inspected it in many places, took photos (and a video), and assessed what it would take to fix the leaking and keep additional damage from occurring. It had had standing water that rarely went away because the old roof had been installed without a steep enough slope. I had had one contractor come out and offer to apply some patches and yet another who did not even get up to the roof to inspect it. Tom, instead, explained not just what the problems were with the different areas of the roof, but also advised me of a problem with the fireplace smoke stack (which hadn't been installed according to code). He also made other suggestions that were more than helpful and not something that he would profit from (like removing a railing at the edge of the roof because it was adding to the problem). When I accepted his proposal, he and his crew came out, completely demolished the old roof, cleaned up beautifully, installed the new roof -- and replaced the old gutters (not at my expense). Tom told me to remember to schedule a courtesy inspection with him after about a year. They finished in one day plus the next morning. The water damage problems have stopped, the roof is functioning well, and I would call Tom in a flash if I ever had another roofing or gutter problem. I recommend him and the company wholeheartedly.

Now, a month after Hurricane Sandy, and after I've been up in the attic to inspect, I'm happy to say that there are no leaks, no problems. I'd recommend him in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: I had two contractors provide estimates for replacing my aging roof. Tom was very professional, explaining various things about the roof and ventilation. His estimate came a couple of days later. I compared the two estimates, asked both contractors a few more questions, and chose Lyons Contracting for the job. The prices were quite close. Tom walked me through the pros and cons of roofing product selection as well as color. Since I have overhanging trees and the leaves tend to stain shingles, I opted for tan/brown. I had planned on a heat-reflective white until he pointed out the stains on my existing roof. He even delivered a couple of samples of shingles so I could see exactly what I was looking at in the product brochures. The work was completed while i was out of town. But when I returned, the roof was gorgeous. I've worked in the flowerbeds many hours since, and have found only one stray nail! There was no damage to the yard, shrubs, or flower gardens. I'd been worried about that. My solar tubes were slightly dislodged during the work, but Tom came out promptly and fixed them. He followed up a week after installation to ask if there were any troubles.

My original roof was 18 years old. It held up well through 2 hurricanes but the last one resulted in 2 leaks. Since we expect to retire and sell the house end of next year I figured it was time to replace the shingles so as not to pass a problem on to the next owners. After reading through many, many reviews, I contacted Tom Petrilli at Lyons since he's local and primarily based on the reviewer that said " we suggest you just call Lyons Contracting and save yourself the hassle of talking with anyone else." I have to say, you subscribe to Angie's List for a reason, so this is exactly what we did. My experience was very similar to all the other good reviews for Lyons. I emailed the Lyons contact page and Tom set up an appointment to look at my roof on my day off, 9 Nov. Meeting Tom was a pleasure. He's a great guy which makes it easy to hire him. I advised him the roof was 18 years old and had a couple of leaks, and that we were planning on selling the house in the next year or 2. After he looked at my roof he told me that home buyers generally care about the inside, not the roof, and that he could do some repairs and not have to replace the entire roof making it last maybe 2 more years and saving me thousands. That the coupon on Angie's List was for a standard roof not as sloped as mine resulting in about another half as much if I wanted it replaced. That whatever I wanted done, he could start 30 Nov, weather permitting and be done in a couple of days. How about that, he's talking himself out of business! How often do you see that? I got a very detailed $9585 estimate by email on 13 Nov for a 2429 sf roof and immediately responded that I'd like to hire him to replace the roof to start 30 Nov. Tom was in constant email contact and advised me that material would be delivered on 27 Nov with a work start of 28 and that no one need be home but the driveway needed to be clear for the delivery. Material was delivered on the 27th with almost everything going on the roof. We ended up getting one day of rain which delayed work start by a day. Work was started on the 29th after I'd left for work at 5:30 am. Tom contacted me during the day to say that there was some rotting decking that was replaced. I got home around 4 pm and the crew already had most of the roof replaced! They asked if they could leave a large truck in the driveway overnight, which was fine. The next day the crew was done well before noon. They did a great cleanup leaving nothing that wasn't here before they got here. Tom came by and we talked for a while. The warranty is transferable to the new owners, and in any case he will come back in a year to inspect the job (scheduled the 1 year as we spoke). I doubt I'll need another new roof on this house, or in this area, but will recommend to anyone who needs a roof repaired or replaced and you're getting estimates, give Tom a crack at one of your 3 estimates, or as the other review said "we suggest you just call Lyons Contracting and save yourself the hassle of talking with anyone else." There are contractors who do it all, but Tom only does roofing. He's an expert at it.
Description of Work: Based on reviews, Lyons Contracting in Alexandria, VA was the only estimate I got to replace my 18 year old roof. There was a coupon on AL for 6499 but my roof is more steep than a standard so extra costs were incurred (but included in the estimate). Owner Tom Petrilli was quick to respond and came out to look at the house on my schedule. He got on the roof and quickly assessed my needs. The estimate I received was $9585. I signed the contract, a start date was set, a day and 2 hours later I have a new roof.

We had many conversations with Tom Patrelli about the scheduling - it all depended on rain days. Right on schedule, the delivery of materials occurred on Nov 26 with new roof scheduled for Nov 27. But, it rained on Nov 27; so, at 7:30 on Nov 28, the Lyons crew showed up and started work. They were the most efficient crew I have ever seen - just like a machine. The new house and shed roofs and cleanup were completed by 1 pm. Mr Patrelli came by later in the afternoon and personally inspected the work; he also called the morning of Nov 29 to make sure we were satisfied with the work. I would certainly use Lyons Contracting again and recommend them to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: We had a new roof put on our house and shed. It meant removing all previous roofing material, replacing rotten or cracked roof boards, removing and filling in hole from previous attic fan, reshingling, cleanup, and removal of all material.

Lyons roofing had good reviews, so I contacted them and two other roofers. Tom came to my house, was very nice. He didn't go into the attic and he didn't have a ladder to go on the roof, which I thought was odd. He told me he would have a quote the next day, I am still waiting. I called him twice since and I am still waiting...that was several weeks ago, would definitely not recommend.

Response from Lyons Contracting Inc
I forgot to send you your estimate, I’m very sorry. I’ve reached out to you directly but get no response back, I’ll assume you’ve had your roof taken care of, either that or your anger is still too intense to even speak with me. This house is a three story townhouse, too tall for my 28’ or 32’ ladders to reach the roof. To access this roof I needed a 40’ ladder which one person cannot safely set up; I ride by myself while doing estimates. As for the interior, I saw the leaking in a second bedroom closet ceiling and inquired about attic access. I was shown to a tiny square hole in the ceiling in the back of the quite full master closet...I’m not tiny (ahem..) and there was no way I’d fit in there so I didn’t even try. The following day (11/7/12) I sent my foreman and a helper over to the house to inspect the roof, they took pictures of the suspected leaking area and a few other small items that needed maintenance; I wrote up a quote and then forgot to send it. Surely there are better things to do at 2:48am on a Monday than writing an all F review of a business that hasn’t done you any harm..I didn’t kick your dog, I didn’t steal your money..I just forgot to give you a piece of paper and for that I’m heartily sorry. The repair cost for your roof was $435.00, that is the exact amount that I will be sending the Riva Refuge; in fact I’m going to round it up a bit. This is a charity based in Frederick MD that does work by providing education opportunities, health care and a safe haven for many terribly disadvantaged children. I learned about this group when I installed a roof for one of it’s volunteers, I was deeply moved by her dedication and blown away when I learned how she actually walks the walk. She has traveled to Uganda, Tanzania, Pakistan, Kenya and some pretty dangerous places caring for children that are inches from slipping off the earth. My idea of roughing it is renting a vacation house that only has basic cable; this charity goes to places where clean water is a luxury and the bare essentials for life must be acquired each day. if you’re reading this you can afford to send a few dollars to an extraordinary group of people doing real good in the world. update: 11/28 I’ve set up a new system so that I can’t forget to send estimates.

Numerous service providers recommended a new roof for me. I am so glad I went to Angie's list. I was reluctant at first to put a $6500 service on my credit card, but after meeting with the contractor and discussing the work, reviewing the proposal and comparing it to my other estimate, I was assured this was a good purchase for us. It was an excellent experience from start to finish! The contractor was extremely competent, efficient, resourceful and I am thankful we went with them. The price was $2500 less than a quote I received recently (~25% less). The material was top drawer. The crew was timely and professional, minimizing intrusion. The operation was run like a well oiled machine. The communication from the contractor was responsive, friendly, reassuring and exactly the right amount. I can without a doubt provide the highest and most unequivocal recommendation for these guys.
Description of Work: My 20+ year old roof was replaced, along with some plywood that had rotted out because my gutter guards held water on the eaves of my roof. Supplies were delivered one work day in advance. The entire roof was removed and replaced in one day, leaving my gutters and my yard spotless. Amazing transformation to my home!

This was about as painless as this type of experience can get. BEFORE: Tom walked the entire roof with me and explained exactly what he thought needed to be done and why. He answered my questions patiently and thoroughly. DURING: Tom was there off and on, but his crew chief, Ismael, was there throughout the entire process, and I was able to contact Tom easily even when he was off-site. They had to start a day later than originally promised, but Tom gave me advance notice. The crew arrived punctually and worked steadily until sunset, by which time they had finished all work on the house, leaving only the carport for the next day. I was told they would be finished at around 2 or 3 the next day; they finished at 2 on the dot. AFTER: The yard and deck were cleaner after they left than when they arrived. The roof looks terrific. They really did a great job. Cost was more than the initial estimate, but everything made sense and there were no surprises.
Description of Work: Removed 2 layers of shingles down to decking. Replaced decking as needed. Installed new baked enamel aluminum drip edge at all eaves. Installed GAF Weather Watch Waterproof underlayment along all eaves to more than 24" inside warm wall of house. Install new shingle underlayment over remaining areas of roof deck. Install new neoprene and aluminum pipe collars at all existing plumbing vents. Install new fiberglass self sealing roofing shingles (GAF Timberline HD). Install new copper pan, step, apron and counter flashings at the existing masonry chimneys. Cut out peak; cover with new GAF Cobra ridge vent. Clean existing gutters. Clean, sweep yard (after removing tarp used to cover shrubbery).

I bid out the work to a bunch of roofers and Lyon's was right in line. The thing that sold me on Tom was that he really tried to help solve the problem we were having with tempature fluctuations in our sunroom. He was very upfront that he didn't think a new roof alone would solve the problem. He not only helped with the roof but also made some recommendations on other ways to properly heat / cool our room. Tom was unbelievably responsive and provided real time pictures of the work while I was away at the office. They cleaned up after themselves and worked well with the other contractors I had on site. Overall a great experience!
Description of Work: I had Tom's company remove my old low slope roof of about 500 sqft and install a new white TPO membrane roof. They removed two old leaky skylights and also repaired some damaged plywood.

Outstanding experience from initial call to the company through completion of the job. Very helpful and responsive staff. Entire crew was very professional and courteous. There is nothing that I experienced with Lyons that I thought they could have done better. This experience could either be the best or is definitely one of the best experiences I have had with a contractor. I highly recommend this company and would not hesitate to use them again.

The Lyons installers arrived right on time and worked very dilligently throughout the day, only breaking for lunch and the rain storm that passed through. They were prepared for the rain with tarps to cover the bare roof until they could get back to work. We were amazed at how much progress they were able to make on Day 1, and they were finished with our entire 3000+ sq ft roof by about lunch time on Day 2. The roof looks great, our neighbors provided positiive reviews right away. More importantly, we no longer have leaks, nor does the rain come gushing down behind the gutters any more. They also did a great job of cleaning up after themselves. We did find a few stray pieces of shingle cuttings, and a few nails, but so few that you never would have known they were there if you didn't know we our roof replaced. Our only criticism is that we thought we were going to get a price break based on the GroupOn Deal, but since our roof was larger than the square footage the GroupOn coupon was based on, it ended up costing us about the same as we would have paid from other contractors we had estimates from wihtout any coupon. We still feel like we got our money's worth, but the coupon really did not provide any real benefit.
Description of Work: Lyons Contracting replaced our entire roof. They pulled all of the old material down, replaced a few panels of plywood that had rotted out under the old roofing material, and installed new tar paper, shingles, vent sleeves, and drip guards. They even added material to the eaves since the builder did not install the old roof with adequate overhang, which always caused the rain to fall behind the gutters.

November 2011 installation experience: Everything went great. Lyons was professional, timely, courteous, hard-working, respectful - you name it! I couldn't have asked for a better experience. One of the things I really like about their approach is that at all points: initial inspection, during installation, and at the finish, Tom took pictures of our roof. Having a flat roof, I had never actually seen what it looked like up there! The pictures were very helpful as he explained our issues and showed us the final product. September 2012 update: We noticed a very small leak in the attic. I emailed Tom a picture of the drip and he came out the very next day to fix the problem. It turned out to be an issue with the sealant around one of the vents. He repaired it while we were at work and then emailed us a picture! His responsiveness to this follow-up situation is what puts Lyons over the top in my book. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Description of Work: Removal of old flat roof. Installation of new insulation board, aluminum vents, and TPO roofing membrane.

Tomas Petrilli and Lyons Contracting replaced our roof. The whole process from initial call to the day the work was completed was a pleasure. Like many homeowners, we had never done anything like this before. We had many questions, all carefully responded to. They provided a detailed written quote, and supplied references in our area.
Description of Work: We replaced our roof, including a flat porch roof.

Lyons Contracting was one of three bids we obtained for this job. Although their bid was the highest, my wife and I were very impressed with the throughness of their estimate, the fact that the estimator showed us pictures of the conditions on my roof so we could better understand what was going on, and the owner's involvement in directly supervising the installation of the TPO membrane. It took a while to get the job scheduled, but Tom offered to make some spot repairs if the roof continued to leak before they could get us scheduled. Lyons Contracting does one roof installation at a time. Other companies we contacted could have performed the work sooner, but my wife and I were heartened to know when our time came that we would receive Lyons Contracting's full attention. The job was completed in 1.5 days, slightly ahead of schedule. They had a large crew and worked for about 12 hours on the first day to ensure the new roof was watertight because rain was expected that evening. We expressed one concern about dust getting into our window AC units located on the second floor. The crew promptly took steps to cover them. Tom sent pictures of the before, during, and after so we would have a complete record of what was done. The roof has held up great. We contacted Tom about a month after the job was complete to report an issue with one of the skylights. Tom came out to inspect it personally within 48 hours of our report. He contacted the manufacturer and suggested a number of fixes. The issue resolved itself, but Tom was responsive and through in his research. We have no complaints about the job and the end result. It's nice to know that they are committed to and stand by their work.
Description of Work: Lyons Contracting removed two layers of roofing from our 130 year old house and installed a white TPO roofing memberane and three Velux skylights. A prior owner had installed a rubber roof over a failing tin roof. The rubber roof was not flashed properly and the material had begun to degrade. Water would leak through the roof in multiple places after heavy rains. The project also involved inspecting the existing roof decking and limited replacement where needed.

Because the chimney had to be fixed separately, Lyons recommended a mason, who was terrific and very prompt. We had to contact the Lyons person separately again to ensure the flashing repair was complete. The responsiveness of the company was terrific. In the midst of many calls from the storm, I got a phone call within a few hours from the company's CEO. Our individual contractor was a bit slower on the comeback. But I would use them again, readily.
Description of Work: The derecho in July dropped a very large limb on our roof that damaged our chimney. Lyons came out promptly (once the limb was gone) and assessed the damage. The chimney itself needed repairing before Lyons could fix the flashing, which was damaged. We did not climb onto our roof to check the repairs (we have an extremely steep roof), but the leaks down the chimney stopped.

We had an excellent experience with Lyons Contracting. We talked to a few roofing companies and based on our experience, we suggest you just call Lyons Contracting and save yourself the hassle of talking with anyone else. The price was much lower than another quote we received (and Lyons Contracting used a better material than that quote) and Tom is extremely responsive to emails and phone calls. We had to work through the Alexandria architectural review board for approval of the cornice and Tom helped us quickly respond to very specific questions they asked. The crew was friendly, on-time, and got the job done in one day. We also really liked that Tom e-mailed us pictures throughout the day to update us on their progress.
Description of Work: Complete roof replacement including coping and the addition of a cornice on the front of our house.

How did it go overall? In a word? Perfectly. The crew showed up on time. They were exceptionally polite. They accomplished the roofing in one day. The next morning the gutter crew came - at the proper time. They were done by mid-day. Now here's the kicker: Throughout the day, Tom sent me email updates, complete with photographs of the job's progress. There must have been five different emails with fifteen or twenty photographs of the job as it went forward. I knew about everything just about as it was happening. No surprises, no hidden issues, no oops. When it was over, Tom came and walked me around the roof and the gutter job, explaining everything to my geeky satisfaction. He made an appointment for an annual inspection then and there, and within a week, sent me an email to make sure that all was (still well). Bottom line? Lyons was fantastic, stupendous, wonderful, and made of win and awesome. If you have a roofing job to do, I'm not sure why you'd go anywhere else. I am completely satisfied.
Description of Work: Bottom line up front: I wish I had three more houses for Lyons Contracting to re-roof. THAT is how positive my experience was. My tar and gravel flat roof was approximately thirty years old, and it was time to replace it. This job was a complete removal of an existing flat roof, replacement of any rotted decking, and installation of a hot air welded Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) roof and insulation. I made a list of ten roofing contractors who had gotten A ratings on Angie's List and set up appointments. One forgot about me completely - and then tried to blame it on me for making the appointment too far in advance. Two came well in advance of the agreed upon appointment time, inconveniencing my family and me. Of the remaining seven who did show up on time, two came, and never presented me with a proposal. Not sure what their estimators actually do for a living, or why my job wasn't that important to them. That left five, and I chose Lyons based on three factors: a. Price: Lyons beat the closest competitor by approximately $2,000.00 - and readily honored his Angie's list coupon; b. Attitude: Tom didn't speak down to me or treat me like I was an idiot, and it was very clear that educating me as to the WHY behind roofing options ,and my convenience as a customer were his priorities; and c. Previous Angie's List comments. Throughout the contracting period, Tom made himself available and accessible. No email or phone response was ever more than an hour or two after I sent an email or left a message. The schedule was determined by my convenience - and even rescheduled to further convenience me! The run-up to job was fantastic - utterly and completely the OPPOSITE of any contractor horror stories one might have heard. Put another way, if I had a laundry list of everything I'd want a contracting job to be, Lyons would have fulfilled it and more.
