We had worked with Lyons Contracting two years ago when my father's house in Alexandria needed a new roof. We chose Lyon's contracting for that job, after receiving several different quotes from other contractors, based upon both the price and Tom Petrilli's knowledge and professionalism. When my wife and I decided to have our own roof replaced, we turned to Lyons, knowing that the quality of the work would be top notch and we would get good value for the money. Because of the additions, our house now had 31 squares of area covering 6 different planes. There were eight skylights, and a chimney to flash around, and 29 sheets of 1/2" plywood to be installed to replace the original house decking. Tom Petrilli provided a couple of options from which to choose, and also gave us addresses to go look at several of the color options in which we were interested. He also allowed me to negotiate down the price of the gutters by removing and hauling away the old downspouts myself. Materials were delivered right on schedule and work started at 8am on the designated day. With a crew of 11 working on the house, the entire job (except the gutters) was completed in one day! A smaller team returned several days later to put up the gutters and downspouts. Putting a new roof on your home is a big investment - and it's worth working with someone you trust to use high quality materials and workmanship, and whose professionalism stands out. We may have been able to find someone to do the job for less (my neighbor down the street recently had their roof replaced by a landscaping company), but we'd rather work with a company that specializes in roofing and who we trust to stand behind the quality of their workmanship and the materials they install. I would without any hesitation what so ever, recommend Lyons Contracting for any residential roofing job in Northern Virginia.
Description of Work: We needed a new roof on a house that had three additions added in the last 15 years. The original house, built in 1963, had 3/8" roof decking which we wanted replaced. We also wanted new gutters and downspouts installed.

I contacted Lyons as well as two other companies to give us estimates on our roof. From the get-go, Tom impressed me with his candor, and I knew this was someone we could trust. Secondly, he did not make me wait around--like some other companies do--to give me an onsite estimate, and instead emailed me an estimate in a day or two, which I preferred. Third, the price was superior to the other companies. Once we scheduled the work, things moved very quickly. We have a larger, more complicated roof--due to an addition--so it took about 1.5 days, but that was fine by us. Tom also honored a pledge to keep my garden plants as protected as possible. Not one was harmed! And the Angie's List discount was a nice plus. We're very happy.

I contacted Tom several years ago to get an estimate for a new roof. At that time, he told us that we did not need a new roof and they made some minor repairs. In contrast, two other companies told us we needed a new roof immediately and gave us inflated estimates. Once we needed a new roof, we went directly to Lyons. The price was fair and the turn around time was very quick. The work was done in a day. The roof looks great and everything was cleaned up. We couldn't be happier with their work.

I contacted Lyons in reference to an Angies List Big Deal. After discussions with Tom Petrelli, we agreed to proceed. All discussions were very prompt and informative, and Tom was extremely upfront about the entire process including costs above and beyond the deal (e.g. for access problems due to trees blocking the roof). I judged the overall price to be fair, especially for the high end roof involved. We were leaving town for a week, so we arranged for the roof to be installed on the Monday following our return. Tom called while we were on our way back to ask if he could move the installation up to Saturday due to a prediction of rain. I agreed and the entire job was done over about 8 hrs on Saturday. Given the number of man-hours and materials, the price was very reasonable indeed, and the quality of work seems top notch. Impact on the property was minimal and cleanup appears thorough. Tom's crew seemed to know their business very well. Afterwards, I noticed a smear of asphalt on our garage door. Before I could do anything, Tom called to explain the the foreman had told him about it but didn't have the proper cleanup material with him, and asked if he could come out the next day to clean it up. This sort of personal service exemplifies the entire experience with Lyons Contracting. I'd like to say we will use them again, but, as all they do is roofing, I have every expectation that we won't be needing their services since our new roof will probably outlast us! I certainly recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Services included a complete reroofing job, including tearoff of the old roof, replacement of worn plywood sheets, complete replacement of flashing and other metal pieces, and a new roof with architectural shingles.

We contacted Lyons Contracting after noticing our roof had some signs of wear and tear. Tom Petrilli was very communicative and did a great job explaining why he thought we needed a roof replacement, how he came up with our quote, and when they would be able to do the work. He was also very helpful when it was discovered during the replacement that much of our roof decking needed replacing, which was not included in the original price, and he helped make that cost less than it could have been. We are happy with how the whole process went from start to finish. The workers were on time and did a great job protecting our landscaping. They also did a fantastic cleanup job when they were done. We would recommend Lyons Contracting to anyone.
Description of Work: Got an entire roof replacement (greater than 2000 sq ft), which included removing all existing roofing to the wood decking, shingle replacement, replacement of attic vent fans with a ridge vent, new chimney flashing, and weather proofing around all other plumbing and air vents on the roof. Wood decking replacement was done as needed at an additional charge.

The job was started soon after we signed the service agreement. The materials were delivered the day before the project started. The workers were on the job early (say 8 am) and worked until early evening, completing most of the work. They came back the morning of the next day to finish some minor work and gather up any remaining residue from the project. I like how the new roof looks and feel quite satisfied with the job.
Description of Work: The Contractor removed our old roof; replaced any rotted boards; and laid a new roof with appropriate appurtenances. The old materials were gathered up and removed. The yard was swept with a tool to pick up nails. The manager inspected the job and allowed us to pay with a credit card.

I couldn't be more happy with the service and work Tom and his crew provided. After learning we were being reassigned and needed to rent the house in less than 2 months, my husband and I decided we needed to bite the bullet and get a new roof before we left. I looked for Angie's List big deals and saw Lyon's Contracting was offering the GAF roof replacement for $6,500. I called at 12pm to try schedule an estimate as soon as they could come out, given our time frame and Tom said he could come by at 5:30 the same day! He came out and finished the measurements in about 20 minutes. He was prompt and extremely efficient. In fact, I had a couple of leaks caused be Hurricane Sandy and he actually took the time during the estimate to come in and look at all the areas and explained what likely happened. Considering I was his last house of the day, I was very impressed with his thoroughness. Tom asked when I wanted the roof replaced and I asked if it could be done by the next weekend. Most contractors would have laughed since it was Thursday and I was asking to get the roof done within the next 9 days. But he didn't. He said he would get me the estimate by the next day and I had the weekend to decide the color and if we would wanted to go through with it. Since our roof was well over the Angie's List coupon square footage which assumes most two story houses to be approximately 2,000 sq ft the estimate came in a little higher than expected. I looked around and had one other estimate but Tom's estimate was just slightly higher and I felt much more comfortable working with him. As a first time homeowner I often feel as though I have a target on my back for contractors, but I felt like Tom was upfront and honest and never tried to sell me something I didn't need. After agreeing on a price, his crew was out the next Thursday and Tom updated me with pictures of the progress while I was at work. Because Friday was calling for thunderstorms, the crew worked until 8pm. Tom called to let me know and apologize for them being there so late but said they wanted to get as much done Thursday since they knew they wouldn't have as much time on Friday. So they installed a nearly 2,900 sq ft. roof in one day. Friday it stormed but during a break they came and finished. Saturday Tom came by to check to make sure everything was done properly and to make sure all the debris was cleaned up (which it was by the crew). As I stated before, I couldn't be more pleased with job done and the service provided.

Tom and his team were great to work with. My entire roof was replaced in a day and a half and I am very happy with the quality of the work. A team of guys showed up to my house and worked until 7pm on the first day and knocked most of the job out. On the second day a couple of guys came back and finished it up. The guys cleaned up before they left each day and Tom sent me pictures of the progress while I was at work. I would definitely use Lyons again.

We discovered we had a roof issue when rainwater was seeping between the gutter and the roof's edge, and pouring down the side of the house. After getting estimates, we chose Lyons Contracting. After making an inquiry, I was contacted literally 5 minutes later by Tom Petrilli. His promptness took me by surprise, but by the end of the whole experience, I got used to it-- throughout the entire process, from estimate to completion, he was always in contact and always easy to reach. He came out THAT DAY to give an estimate. In fact, he came by twice because we missed him the first time. He explained the nature of the damage on the roof and what needed to be done and directed us to a website that explained in detail the process of replacing a roof like ours. I was relieved to hear that the entire job could be done in one day. Having a bit of rain in the area, it took a few days before he and his team were able to get to work, but when they did, they arrived bright and early and started right away. They even endured my barking dogs for eight long hours. Throughout the day, Tom emailed me pictures from up on the roof so I could see the progress. Thankfully, the wood beneath the roof was not rotted and did not need replacing. Considering the giant pile of junk that came off the roof, they did a fantastic cleanup job. They even came through with a blower to get up all the little pieces, dust, etc. from the yard and steps, etc. The new aluminum looks good and the gutter performed flawlessly in today's rain. I would highly recommend Lyons Contracting for all your roofing needs! The overall professionalism and quality of their workmanship was stellar. A nice crew and an absolute pleasure to do business with.

Mainly purchased the special offer from Angie's List at about $6500 in 2012. Tried to get all my chimney work done before the start of the roofing job. Very nice feature was that Tom sent over picture updates via email while the job was in progress.
Description of Work: Got new roof, removed the old satellite dish, removed extra layer off (extra) and fixed up the chimney flue (extra) and did it all in one day before I got home by 3pm. Tom was good at going over my options before the start of the job.

Sales process: - Excellent! No pressure. Tom was one of the most professional, easy-to-work-with contractors I have ever hired. He measured my house, gave me an estimate, and explained it carefully. I got quotes from 2 other firms and his price was very competitive. He also explained everything that might cost more if the job uncovered problems. For example, when they pull the roofing material off, they might see wood rot and have to replace the plywood. He gave me pricing for all of those possibilities as well. I felt like there were no hidden costs. What's more, storms kept blowing the rake-trim off my house. Tom suggested a fix that he could implement during the job, by installing rake-trim-retainers. The additional cost was minimal. Work performance: - Everything happened on the proposed schedule without incident. The workers were professional and they worked hard. It was impressive. When they were done, it was like they were never there. My yard was clean, the roof looked perfect. Exceptional care about work quality: Two of my window screens were accidentally damaged when a roof shingle fell and clipped the screens. I didn't notice, but Tom did when he did his final inspection. He told me about it, then took the screens with him, repaired them, and dropped them off the next day. Price: Tom's pricing was clear and easy to understand with no hidden fees. His price was fair and competitive. In summary: Lyon's was great value, excellent quality, and easy and enjoyable to work with. I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: 22-year-old house roof was replaced: Old shingles and paper removed. Damaged plywood was removed. Satellite antennae dishes (2) were removed. New wood (1 sheet), paper shingles installed. New chimney collars for all vents. New ridge-vent. Cleaned up site. Plus - strap-hangars were installed along all gutters to keep them from moving away from roof. Plus - sheet-aluminum rake trim was replaced on 1 8-foot section (storm blew it off.) Plus- rake trim retainers were installed all around to prevent trim from moving in future storms (lost trim before to storms.) Shingles were to match what was originally there. (And they did.)

The building material supplier delivered the shingles and roofing felt days before the work was to begin. It was setting on the ridge of my house for several days before work begin. That included the snow storm that was to deliver up to one foot of wet snow although we received a lot less. I called Tom and told him that I was worried about the excess loading on the roof. He and his crew came out and shoveled snow off of the roof and redistributed the loading. The roofing started on Thursday the 7th of March. That day the crew finished up 89% of my gabled roofs. The next day was too windy for the TPO roofing membrane to be "welded" so no work was done. The crew returned on Monday the 11th. They installed the roof and cleaned up. In the process they replace approximately 600 sq ft of sheathing. A large amount in my opinion. The replacement boards did not come cheap. Tom did give a discount from his earlier estimate. I am very happy with the quality of workmanship and the clean up they performed.
Description of Work: I needed new roofs for my house. I have two gable roofs and one shed. There has been leaks for some time and the sheathing was so bad that a raccoon managed to claw his way into my attic. That was a good indicator that I needed a new roof.

We signed up for a an Angie's Big Deal with Lyon's contracting after having a previous roof replacement quotation recently. Tom Petrilli was quick to reach out to us for a visit and inspection of the house. Tom arrived on time and explained the process. He left us with some roofing samples to choose the color, and asked if we had any special concerns with leaks or with with shrubbery around the perimeter of the house . I explained we had an intermittent leak inside the interior wall of our garage. He asked if our gutters where OK, and I mentioned that one of our downspouts had been damaged in a recent storm. He did his measurements, and promised a quote later that evening. We received a quote and contract that covered everything we discussed later that same evening- just like he said. We setup a date for the roof replacement, and Tom kept us informed as the date approached. Materials were delivered the day prior to the installation- as planned. I wanted to be home during the replacement but had a last minute scheduling conflict. I was home as the workers arrived- on time as promised. Tom emailed me during the day, and sent a picture of the progress. He also let me know that they discovered the problem with the intermittent leak, and resolved it. They didn't forget the replacement downspout either. When I arrived home, I found the workers had left but Tom was still onsite doing a walk through of the grounds. I am very pleased with the outstanding job and superior service and professionalism of Tom and his crew, and am so happy I chose Lyon's Contracting for our new roof!
Description of Work: Lyon's Contracting removed and replaced our 2,350 sq ft. roof. The roof was stripped clean to the decking, and was inspected prior to applying the new underlayment and shingles of our choice. Plants and shrubs where covered around the perimeter of the house, and great care was taken to thoroughly clean the grounds after the install.

It was wonderful. In just a few minutes I learned what was causing my water damage, and all free of charge. If the estimator (Thomas) is an example of the quality of workers in the company, they are a high quality corp.
Description of Work: Thomas happened to be in my neighborhood and came within 5 minutes of my call for 3 flat roof replacements. After seeing the water damage in my house, he climbed on the roof to look. He quickly diagnosed several problems, none of which was caused by the roof. We have stopped up drainage of storm window water and a leaking chimney. He was very helpful about what we needed to fix (none of which his company did) and said we did not need new roofs, they were fine. He is HONEST!!! I difinitely will use his services for any roofing needs in the future, and recommend the company to all.

We were very happy with Tom from the very beginning. He was ridiculously responsive and very accommodating with times to meet us for estimates, product selection, and so forth. When he met us for the initial estimate, he was very thorough. We had not had any prior estimates and really didn't know much about roofing. He was patient with my myriad of questions and when I asked his opinion on options, he was never pushy with the more expensive options. When he asked if we wanted any skylights added, I initially said no but as he finished his measurements, my husband asked me to go ahead and get the estimate for one anyway. At that time I also inquired about adding the 2 (non-existant) bathroom exhaust vents. He was honest that it is cheaper to put them in when we put the roof in even if we don't finish the interior work right away. Lyon's Contracting does not do interior work at all. This is a bit of a shame because I just wanted everything to be finished, but it is understandable. Tom promised to get us the estimate within a couple of business days (the estimate was on a Saturday morning). However, by lunchtime, I had it in my email. He called to confirm that I received it and he offered to go through it with me in detail when I wanted to. We got a second estimate just because the scope of the work deemed it. And, because it was hard to swallow such an expense when the roof really hadn't given us any problems- it was really just old. The other estimate was from another high-rated Angie's List company. They were also thorough in their estimate. They offered slightly different venting and skylight options. In the end, the estimates were almost the same in cost. Unfortunately, they were both a little higher than we had been expecting. But, we also admit that we added a few things that weren't "standard". We chose to go with Lyon's because we felt that Tom was very honest and sincere. He could start work sooner and in all honesty, we liked the fact that his employees are all members of one family (literally). We figured their crew would be efficient because they have all been working together and also that they are not day laborers. We had no way of knowing that with the other contractor. It took us a couple of weeks to get the other estimate and make our decision to sign the contract with Lyon's. During this time, Tom contacted me a few times just to check in. I never felt he was being pushy. Tom dropped off color samples almost immediately. He laid out the shingle tiles on our front lawn while we were at work. We chose the color and Tom scheduled us for the following week. The supplies were delivered a day before they were meant to start work but Tom had to push the work date back because another project had more rotting wood than they had expected. This is understandable. Unfortunately, it pushed us into Hurricane Sandy. I was concerned about the security of the roofing materials that had been "stored" on top of the roof. The other (smaller) stuff I moved to the back patio. Tom came by and checked that everything on the roof was secure. He offered to take all the other supplies from the patio with him but we were ok to leave them. Everything weathered the storm and work began a couple of days later. The team arrived on schedule and began work quickly. Tom arrived to determine the location of the bathroom vents and the skylight. He had asked us to determine where we wanted the skylight but because of our sloped ceiling and the fact that the texture on the ceiling prevents stud finders from working well, we weren't able to come up with a solid location. Tom was incredibly patient and worked with me to determine a "best position". I left Tom a key to the house in case he needed to get back in for other measurements. I hadn't yet made it to work when I got a call that there was a problem with the spacing of my rafters (?). They were non-standard and too narrow for the skylight. I came back home and talked with Tom about it. We decided to put it in anyway. I wasn't aware until after the project was complete that we could head off the rafters and make enough space, but it is more of a carpentry project than we wanted to tackle ourselves. Tom anticipated that we may want to do this and he positioned the skylight in a very nice position so that it is closer to centered once the interior work is finished. He also avoided junction boxes so that we don't need to move electrical. The other thing was that Tom noticed that we had a diverter on a "corner" of our house which was pretty ugly. He had the crew place shingles in an overhang sort of way to funnel the water to the gutter. This was definitely more asthetic. They painted the sewer pipes and other exhaust pipes to blend in better with the roof. When I came home, I was pleased with how the roof looked with a few exceptions. on the far end of the ridge vent, it angled upwards which looked a little odd. There were a few places where the shingles that met up to the gutter were kind of bumpy. There were also several small pieces of what look like tape hanging off of the shingles. I asked Tom to go look at this stuff when he had a chance. The following day, he called me back to tell me that the "bumpy" shingles would settle down once we had some warmer weather (which turned out to be true) and also that my gutter guards were not even so there would be some unevenness to those shingles. He removed most of the "tape" (he explained what they were but I don't remember). He evened out the ridge vent some. We were content with the results. Following the first noticable rain, it turns out that the ugly diverter that we had before was actually needed to prevent significant erosion of the flowerbeds below. I called Tom and he came out and crafted one. Not too ugly, either. He followed up with me to see how it behaved. I neglected to get back to him, but it works well. In all. we are very happy with our new roof. I've noticed with the snow/frost that it is insulating really well and the ridge vent is evenly venting. I can't say we see any energy difference because, as I said, our old roof wasn't giving us any problems. It looks fabulous and we can't wait to get a contractor to finally come in and finish the skylight so we can enjoy it.
Description of Work: Replace roof on my c.1969 home (~1400 sqft) with architectural style shingles (20 year?). Remove 3 whirligigs and replace with a ridge vent. Seal roof around chimney. Add 1 new (2'x4') skylight. Add 2 vents for new bathroom exhaust vents. Replace a few sections of rotten wood under the previous roof.

Is there a higher appraisal than Outstanding / Perfect? I joined Angie's List back on 6 January looking for a reliable roofing specialist to provide a replacement roof for my home. I came across the special that Lyons Contracting Inc. had and I noticed that they did roof repairs, which was of vital importance because other roofing contractors did not provide that service. I knew I needed some repairs due to leaks around my attic fan, chimney, and skylight meaning that some of the plywood sheathing needed to be replaced. In looking at what can be done and what the extra costs would be, i.e. new sheathing and new skylight, the deal met my budget on getting the roof re-done. Tom Petrilli came to my house a couple of days later and we went over what needed to be done. Upon a quick inspection of the roof and what needed to be done, he already knew that some of the sheathing needed to be replaced. He also mentioned that the shingles appeared to have another 2 years on them which was pretty accurate because the shingles were 30 year shingles and I told him the roof was 28 years old. He also mentioned that there was no counter-flashing around my chimney and that he would take care of it. This told me that I had the correct person for the job. Tom asked me when I wanted the job done and I mentioned as soon as possible but was concerned with the weather. Was it too cold to mount new shingles? He mentioned to me that the new formulation used in today's shingles allowed him to mount them as long as the temperature outside was 30 degrees or higher. I asked how long a job like this would take and he mentioned a couple of days, which was great for me also. He sent me his proposal on 14 January and I quickly accepted the proposal knowing it was in the ballpark of what I estimated it would be with the understanding of what the extra costs were (sheathing replacement, pitch greater than 5/12, area greater than 2000 square feet, etc.). He kept me apprised on where on his schedule my job would be. He mentioned that the supplies would be delivered on January 29 and they were delivered on time. Another reason I knew I selected the correct person, his keeping of schedule allowed me to plan my schedule accordingly because I wanted to be there when the job was being carried out. Weather delayed our start date from January 30 to February 4 which is not bad at all seeing it's winter. It snowed a couple of days and I know that customer satisfaction and the safety of the crew come hand in hand. So I totally understood the delay. Tom stated in an email to me that his foreman would arrive between 7:45 and 8:45 AM depending on traffic. The foreman and the crew came out at 8:30 AM on February 4 to start work. My wife and I were amazed and impressed by the work done by the crew. They removed the old shingles, replaced necessary sheathing, re-flashed the chimney, and re-shingled one side of the house in one day. On February 5, they did the same on the other side, replacing the skylight, removing the attic fan (we replaced the old ridge vent with a new one), and putting in new sheathing and shingles. Another day of impressing my wife and I with their work ethic and most notably, their politeness. Tom kept his word, the job was done in two days, it would have been done sooner if it weren't for the sheathing being replaced. But I am worry free about it because I know I have a solid roof over my head. If there is a Gold Standard on how to do business in meeting the needs of their customers, Lyons Contracting Inc. has set that standard. I was so impressed with the people involved and their workmanship, this company ought to be used as a case study to be taught in construction and customer service training nationwide.

Working with Lyons Contracting was very pleasant. We requested and received a timely quote for a roof replacement on an older home in Arlington. After evaluating different options for the shingles, including type and color, we were able to schedule the installation easily and quickly. The team that completed the work was extra efficient and finished the job in an even shorter time frame than we expected, given the age of the roof and the very steep pitch (the team told us it was like roofing the face of a cliff!). The team left our home and lot very clean and free of debris from the roof removal and replacement. We have been very pleased with our experience with Lyons and would recommend them.

Thomas from Lyon's was great to deal with. Tom was able to stop by the day after I contacted him to look at the job and give me an estimate. There were a couple jobs ahead of mine but they were still able to get my roof completed within about a week of me accepting their offer. It only took them one day finish the whole job. They cleaned up after themselves and left my yard free of any debris or scraps. Thomas even sent me an email along with photos in the afternoon letting me know that the job was completed. Thomas was very responsive to any questions I had and they were a great company to do business with.

In 2007 we had an addition made to our Alexandria Virginia house, which included roofing above the new sections. Although only a few years old the area above the garage was showing wrinkles in the shingles. We decided to have the roof above the garage replaced and after speaking with two roofing firms, chose Lyons Roofing to do the repairs. The Lyons representative came to the house on Tuesday and examined the roof over the garage. He agreed that the shingles above the garage were showing some wrinkles and needed to be replaced, but noted that the remaining areas of the roof did not show any unusual wear and did not need to be repaired. My wife and I decided to have Lyons make the repairs (removing the existing shingles and replacing them), and two days later (Thursday of the same week) they had a team at our house working on the roof above our garage. They discovered that the tar-paper under the existing shingles, had not been secured to the roof and was most likely the cause of the "wrinkles" we had observed. Lyons crew removed the existing shingles, installed and secured tar-paper and new shingles above the garage, and completed the job to our full satisfaction. They sent me photos of the project as they worked on the roof and completed the project in one afternoon. My wife and I were fully satisfied with the quality of the work and appreciated that we were informed of the roofing crew's progress as the work was being completed. We would gladly recommend Lyons Contracting to anyone in need of roofing work - installation or repair.

I spent months researching roofing materials and roofing installation companies, using Consumer Reports, Angie's List, friends and neighbor recommendations. I selected three local companies for estimates. All three were good companies, but Lyons came in with an estimate in the middle of the other two, did not use sub-contract laborers, and Lyons was the only company to give me a firm detailed proposal (others had too many price variables and potential add-ons.) Yes, it was expensive, but I also have a roof with 10 elevations/angles, and we chose quality materials with the best warranty. The delivery went smoothly, the team of installers and site manager arrived on-time and were meticulous about protecting flower beds and exterior of house. Interesting thing I noted was that, unlike other home contractors who are constantly yelling to each other, the Lyons team did very little talking on the job. They are not subs; they are installers who have been trained by Lyons and have worked together for years. They knew who was supposed to do what and when -- very efficient operation. They also cleaned up entire area around the house at the end both work days and swept for nails. I have recommended Lyons to several friends who are also very pleased with their work. You get what you pay for when you hire the right company, like Lyons.
