About us

Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape was established by Krisjan Berzins and Phil Williams in 1997. Both graduated in 1993 from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and were members of the varsity football team when they began their friendship. Phil attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied sociology. Krisjan attended Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he studied international business. Krisjan’s experience working in grounds maintenance at the Mount Vernon Country Club and Phil’s discipline and strong business sense formed the foundation for an ideal partnership, and the two began working together in 1997. After only 10 years in business, they had grown Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape into one of the most recognized landscape brands in Northern Virginia—with annual gross revenues of more than $5 million. In early 2008, Krisjan purchased Phil’s share of the corporation and became sole owner of Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. While he was disappointed to see Phil go, Krisjan knew that he was ready to write the next chapter of the Kingstowne story. Today, nearly 20 successful years of business, Krisjan and his wife, Mayra, head a strong company with over 50 employees, 25 trucks, and 13 acre corporate campus, inside the beltway, in Alexandria, Virginia. Their company’s success lies in the firm belief that every customer should be treated as the “only” customer!

I called Kingstowne to ask if they did this type of work and how they would go about quoting it. The woman on the phone told me that my project was considered 'clean up' and an account manager would be able to come out and look at the location and provide an estimate. She said I would not have to be there and there would be no charge for this estimate. I told her the date for my shed installation and asked if she felt their schedule could support putting the gravel pad in before that so I could keep to the installation schedule. She said they could.  I happened to be home the day that the account manager came out. I showed him the existing shed (it needed to be torn down and hauled away -- but the woman on the phone had already told me they did not do this type of work and I would have to have it torn down and hauled away in order for them to do the gravel pad), the 12 x 12 area that I wanted cleared for the gravel pad, and the trees from which I wanted the ivy removed. I told him I would like the area around the trees to be mulched once the ivy was cleared. He said that he actually would not be able to quote it without a landscape person coming out to look but that I wouldn't have to be there when that person did. The account manager then emailed me later that day to tell me that their schedule wouldn't support doing the work for me prior to my shed installation. He wanted to let me know in case I no longer wanted a quote. I said that based on price -- I might opt to change my shed installation date so if they were still willing to provide a quote, I would review it with the others I had gotten. He then emailed me back to tell me there would be a $50 charge for the landscaper to come out and provide a quote. I understand that some companies do this when a homeowner is requesting a design be created for them because there are actual design services involved -- but this was clearing ivy, putting down mulch, and laying a gravel pad. I knew and communicated exactly where I wanted this work to be performed. I was not requesting a landscape design. I told them that since there were several companies willing to quote their work at no charge -- that I would not be interested in paying Kingstowne for a quote. I was disappointed by the miscommunication and by the fact that I was now being asked to pay for an estimate (again -- I did not request a landscape design).

Lady walked around and went back to her car and drew up plans.  Material cost was about 5% of the cost.  I did not like their approach to pricing and how they drew up the plans.  Nothing was close to scale.  I would not recommend this company.

After hearing horror stories from friends, neighbors, and work colleagues, I feel extremely fortunate that all well from start to finish.  I met with landscape designers from three firms and specified the date by which I would make a decision.  I chose Kingstowne even though the cost was a little higher.  There are times, I believe, when one gets what one pays for and this is certainly one of those times.  It was worth the extra expense to have the confidence that all would be done correctly.  Alan MacBeth, the landscape designer, trusted me with a CAD (computer-assisted design) drawing before I committed to Kingstowne -- at the risk of me simply taking the design and having someone do the work for less.  He explained options for the patio, the pros and cons of each approach, and the differences in costs.  He also explained very carefully how the work would be approached and assured me the contract would clearly specify the work to be done, the materials to be used, and who would be responsible for what.  He was always on time, kept me informed throughout the project, visited the site while the work was going on, and was responsive to all my emails.  There were no surprises.  The crew, Salvatore and Andres, worked quickly and confidently.  They left the site in good order each day and policed the area thoroughly before leaving the final time.  There was no after-project clean-up for me.  The actual work took 5 days.  Work began on Monday and was completed by Saturday afternoon.  (Rain prevented any work from being done on Wednesday.)

I found the contract easy to understand.  The way it described the work and the materials involved made it very easy for the homeowners association committee to understand what was to be done.  It was especially assuring that the contract went into detail about how the materials would be moved across common area to my unit and the steps that would be taken to protect the that area (for example, it specified that 18 sheets of 4'x8' plywood would be laid down for the equipment to travel on).

I was very pleased with the work Kingstowne Lawn and Landscape did for me.  The only problem I had was getting someone to come out and give me an estimate. They seemed to be quite busy during the April time frame.    Once a contract was signed, they were very responsive in getting the work done.  The men that performed the work were very professional and accommodating to my requests.  I plan to hire them again to do more landscape work.

We fired the previous lawn care provider -- too expensive, did a mediocre job, whenever we needed something basic to be done it cost lots of extra money. We looked at a few different places and Kingstowne gave us a good deal. Went with them and it's been nothing but good results since. Cost less than the previous provider and the results are far better.

I've been using Kingstowne for close to a year now, and have been very impressed by their responsiveness and care for my lawn.  All questions have been answered quickly and knowledgeably.  The grass looks beautiful and I see a dramatic improvement over last season.

I had to throw up my hands and give in to professional help on my lawn. Am I glad I did. In one season they have change my yard form the worst in the neighborhood to one of the best. I can't wait to see how the yard looks next spring after the winter seeding.


Very reasonable charge for weekly cutting and when I called for a special project with runaway ivy, they gave me a great price and did a great job.

My lawn was in bad shape due to neglect.  They evaluated my needs (you don't have to be home) and sent by email an entire menu of selected services with the prices.  I chose what I wanted and signed an electronic contract by email.  I'm not sure how competitive their pricing is, as I didn't get other estimates.  They have come on time for every service and after even just one season, the lawn looks much better.  My advice is to choose only what you need as the price can escalate quickly.  They also offer a pay on-line option.  They are very professional and I haven't had one problem after about six months of service.

I contacted Kingstowne Lawn based off the fact that the previous owner of the house recommended them and had used them for weekly mowing. I sent a online request for an estimate, and outlined that I would love some general information on the plants in the yard because I wanted to be able to determine what I could take care of myself, or what I would need their assistance with (like the pruning). I got a incredibly helpful email (including pictures) from Mike Perez, who explained what each type of plant or tree was, and what kind of care they require. He found aphids on our crape myrtle, and recommended a treatment plan. We have signed a contract for bi-weekly mowing, pruning, and the treatment plan, but service has not started yet. (The mowing should be $38 for our size yard.)Looking forward to the care they provide and how our yard will look this spring.

The yard was abandoned for several years except for mowing prior to our purchasing the home.  I had cut down a row of bushes that lined one side of our yard as well as two small holly trees, etc.  They arrived in the morning (they didn't give an exact arrival time estimate other than "in the morning").  The crew did an amazing job and were insanely fast.  They were thorough, professional and took all of the scrap, brush, and other waste with them.  I assume they'd leave it curbside but they hauled it away.  I was very pleased with the service.
I had them come back to give me estimates on a variety of projects including a small deck, removal of 3 very tall pine trees, fence installation, and yard regrading with a possible retaining wall to run the length of the property on the side that slopes steeply to my neighbor's yard (making that side swampy on their property).  They promptly provided estimates on everything except the regrading and retaining wall.  They merely said they couldn't provide one 'at this time.'  I assumed the retaining wall might be an issue so I asked for a regrading w/o the wall as our yard (front and back) has some amazingly ankle twisting pits and valleys that makes mowing difficult for our landscape crew and playing with my dog hazardous.  They never provided an additional estimate nor have they contacted me in any way since.  I even asked about the cost of their mowing services since I was so impressed with the initial job but they never contacted me about that either which is dissappointing.

Your scathing review gives us all F’s and states that you “tried to get service from us and that we never responded even though you called three times”. First of all…I would like to apologize for any difficulties in communication or confusion. We strive to make things as easy and convenient as possible. Upon seeing your review, I checked with our Senior Account Manager, Mike Perez, and asked him about your account. Fortunately, he kept meticulous notes of his communications with you. Please see the email chain below. Here is a brief summary of all communications: - 08/14/14 @ 4:31 pm - You called our office and spoke with Ann. You indicated that you had a property, that belonged to your deceased mother, that required some landscape cleanup services. You also indicated that you were intending to sell the property and wanted us to provide a quote for keeping it neat during that time period. - 08/18/14 – our Senior Account Manager, Mike Perez, stops by 9013 Mulvaney Court, Springfield, VA 22152. During his visit, he assessed the current condition, look necessary measurements as well as 9 photographs. - 08/19/14 @ 9:00 am – Mike Perez sent an email to you (see below) with 9 photographs of the property (which are attached). In that email, he also indicated that he would be sending you an electronic contract for the services requested. - 08/22/14 @ 10:28 am – Mike Perez sent you an email (see below) indicating that he had not heard back from you. The email included approximate pricing for the services you had requested, however, it also stated that we needed more information from you before we could send an official contract. As you can see, according to our records, the only correspondence we received from you was the initial phone call on August 14th. After that, we stopped by the property, took photos and measurements and sent you 2 emails, all at no charge to you, and yet we never heard back from you. The only way I can justify why you may have felt that we did not respond is if you never received our emails. Is that possible? If so…please provide us with your correct email address so that we can get you all of the pertinent information and, hopefully, get your mother’s property cleaned up as well. I was impressed with the work performed by Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. The initial consultation was very informative and very helpful.  He spent some time taking photos after the consultation and followed up very quickly with a project outline, quote, and an estimated time to perform the work.  I gave a fair score for the responsiveness, because I had to follow up with the office a few times to get a confirmation on the exact schedule.  However, the wait was worth it as the quality of the work had exceeded my expectations.

They came out for an estimate and charged me $50 for just the consultation.  However, if I'd used their services the $50 would go
against the total.  I did not use them, because they were over priced.  I had other companies give me estimates and none came even close to Kingstowne.

"Madam, I am going to speak with your Landscape Designer, and find out what may have happened here. I see that our proposal was for a front walkway (flagstone with brick border), dry stacked stone wall and plantings. In many cases, we see proposal prices fluctuate dramatically based on square footages, material types and size and quantity of plantings. It is possible that our proposal was for a larger area, with a more expensive surface and more plantings that were larger in size?
