MAAS NURSERY & LANDSCAPING

Again the landscape plans were great I thought the estimate for the landscape service slightly high but would probably be worth it if we could afford it but since my husband decided to have a fence put up first we will have to save again for more work. I have bought plants and supplies from them before and know they sell a good product. I would recommend them to anyone and feel good about it.

Two issues: 1. Because I paid for a "Big Deal" of only $90 versus $400 for landscape design, the designer asked me to drive the hour from my house in northwest Houston to the company's location, instead of him driving to my house to discuss the project, evaluate the yard and provide an estimate. He also asked me to supply photos of the yard and measurements of the lot, plus plot out the area to be landscaped on graph paper. I suddenly realized I was doing some of the inital work that should be included in the landscape design. I called Angie's List to ask if this was typical with the Big Deals, and was told that no, the provider decides what areas the Big Deals will cover, and that this should have been included in the landscape design regardless of how much I paid or where my house is located. The designer told me I would need to come out again before he could give me a design and a quote. 2. Before my initial meeting with the designer, I took the photos as he requested on the phone and emailed those to him, along with a detailed Word document with photos that described each aspect of what we wanted to have done. I met with the designer on Sunday, February 20. It was obvious to me that he had not looked at what I had sent -- granted, there were technical issues with his ability to view the photos, but nevertheless he should not have waited until I arrived for the appointment to try to access them. On the positive side, I was impressed with his creativity and obvious passion and knowledge about plants, and thought perhaps that he could do a good job. But I was not impressed with his lack of preparation and organization. It was during this meeting that he asked me to plot the yard on graph paper and to get back to him with our budget. He was going to call a tree expert and get a price for removing the tree. I called and emailed the designer over the next two weeks to get an answer on the cost of removing the tree so that would know how much we could spend on the actual landscaping and finalize our budget. As of last Friday, I had received no response or contact from him, so I called the provider and told the person who answered the phone that I needed to hear from him that day or I'd need to find someone else to do the work. He called back in about an hour and committed to get an answer for me by 3:00 -- he said he was having trouble finding a reliable tree person in my neighborhood. I never heard from him. In the meantime, I checked Angie's List again and found another highly rated landscaper -- he called me back within two hours and is coming to the house this next Sunday. He said he would be able to give us an estimate that day. I also found a separate tree service located just a few miles from my house -- the tree will be removed tomorrow. I know this is a busy time of the year for landscape companies. That's why we started as early as possible (the middle of February) to get this moving. I read all the other reviews on this provider and was swayed by the positive comments -- and the Big Deal. My time is as valuable as the landscaper's and the company's -- and consider the total amount of time (about 5 hours) I spent on prep work and driving there and back a complete waste. Not sure what the issue is overall, but if providers can't take on the work, they need to be upfront about it. And if they agree to a Big Deal, they need to honor it and provide the same type and level of service as if the person had paid the standard price. Angie's List has refunded my $90. Lessons learned -- find someone located as close as possible to your house or to wherever you need the service preformed. Question any requests by the provider for you to supply anything above and beyond what is reasonable for them to develop an estimate or perform the work.

Jim is a great guy and easy to work with. He pays close attention to what you are asking for and delivered us a perfect design. My only complaint is that it took about 2 months from the time we met with him about the design to the time it was finished but I think this can be attributed to his popularity, not a lack of commitment. Maas Nursery promptly delivered our soil and tree and installed the tree. They were very professional and did a great job. Also, we purchased over 150 plants and the nursery had all but 3 plants that we needed in stock.

I rate the service as A+. Visiting the nursery by itself is an experience - it's more like a private garden as opposed to a retail store. There is even free lemonaide or gator aide to drink on those hot hot days. I, for one, get excited when we head that way. You just never know what you might find!

Outstanding design and construction work on a beautiful flagstone patio and gardens. Jim Maas was very conscientious of our budgetary constraints and worked with us to build a garden that could be scaled up over the years. He did not try to sell us into things we could not afford and created a wonderful back yard in about a week of work. His nursery itself is amazing and has become my go-to place for all things plants and outdoorsy/weird. A wonderful place which is always a treat to go to.

If you are interested in a tree ask for Cig he's the best. Maas planted new tree and removed the dead one and did an outstanding job!

WHEN I WENT TO THEIR SITE I ENDED UP WITH THREE EMPLOYEES HELPING ME FIND THE PERFECT ROCKS THAT I NEEDED. THEY ALL SEEMED TO BE CONCERNED THAT WE FIND THE RIGHT ONES. THEY DID NOT HURRY IN THEIR SEARCH FOR THE ROCKS. THEY SEEMED CONCERNED THAT THE TURTLE WOULD NOT HURT HIMSELF CLIMBING ON THE ROCKS WE PICKED OUT.

GREAT PLACE FOR UNUSUAL SHRUBS AND LANDSCAPE PIECES. TAKE GREAT CARE OF THEIR PLANTS. VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE STAFF.

VERY PROFESSIONAL AND RESPONSIVE, ESPECIALLY DURING PEAK OF SEASON. MOST OTHER SERVICES WOULD NOT CALL BACK OR KEEP APPOINTMENTS...MAAS WAS GREAT.
