When my Boxer-baby had a VERY complicated FHO surgery for an old/traumatic injury, I knew PT was needed...not only for the surgery, but for her not using her hind leg for a couple years before the surgery (my boxer is 3-4ish)
I first contacted an SA PT/Rehab place, and they gave me a price list and packages. Although I live in San Antonio, and the other place was closer, I decided to call Westridge for a 'second opinion'... not planning to go there, since they were in the Schertz area. When I called them, they explained what they did, why they did it, and how the whole process works.
At my 'second opinion' appointment, I met with the vet and PT techs, and they walked me through the process AND showed me how it works by treating my Boxer-baby. I was sold...they are professional, responsive, caring, balanced between 'traditional' and 'non-traditional' treatment, and VERY reasonable for pricing, and overall GREAT! My Boxer has been going to PT for a few months...I knew PT was needed a bit longer than 'normal FHO surgery' since she wasn't JUST recovering from an FHO surgery, but also from not using her hind leg for most of her life...
She is doing great, and learning to 'use' her leg...she now walks, runs, and can even stand on her hind leg that she used to just 'tuck up and ignore'. And, she LOVES going...she is excited on the days she knows she is going...
GREAT place for balancing natural and mainstream treatment for dogs...
I have no complaints about the quality of service received. The staff is very friendly and professional. The place is nice and clean. However, I think they are a little pricey. I brought two dogs here to get their yearly vaccinations and was charged just under $400. And that is strictly for the standard yearly vaccinations/yearly exam. I didn't purchase anything extra - no meds, no tick prevention, no heartworm pills - nothing like that. At our last vet, we would have their yearly vaccinations AND teeth cleaned for around $380, so this seems a bit overpriced in my opinion.
"Hello (Member name removed), We are pleased to hear that you found our services and staff be excellent, as we pride ourselves on offering the very best. The standard of care that we offer often has nuances that are not observed by pet owners. We centrifuge our fecal exams in ZnSo4, we perform DHP titer tests rather than contribute to over vaccination with annual DHP vaccines, our Rabies vaccines are mercury free, and our doctors perform full examinations of your pet at every visit (ophthalmic, otic, dental, etc.). That is just regarding our annual exams; I could talk for hours about the differences in our teeth cleaning protocols! :) I hope this explains just a bit of why you might pay more for our services. But we feel confident in saying we think your pet is worth he extra quality. In health, Dr. B"
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Bammel and her staff. If you knew how picky I was about care from my critters, you would know that I don't give an "A" rating easily. I find her fees very reasonable as well. There is nothing I can see to improve the top notch veterinary care one gets from Dr. Bammel and her staff.
In this case, we had an appointment and did not have to wait. There was a very gentle physical exam and lots of questions. Dr Bammel spent nearly an hour with my dog and me. She was very patient and did not want to push things so that my dog would not be freaked out at future visits. She and the staff used a peanut butter stuffed "kong" to distract him during the physical exam and acupuncture. She offered options and recommendations, openly discussed the diagnosis (explaining what was likely happening) and possible treatment including holistic, alternative and traditional. She did not try to get him on a lift but got on the floor with him (that says a lot about a vet's approach to me). She did not "push" the TCM herbs and health supplement I bought but did recommend them. We talked about food therapy and what that entails. She gave me sheets on how to do that if I wished.
Her staff is very efficient. This is a one vet office and so getting in on an emergency might be a problem. I will have to wait and see on that. We are going back late this week for a followup.
My dog is doing well but his back problems may be severe and chronic, we will see what we can do using a mix of modalities to allow him as much quality of life as possible. He did LOVE the home cooked dog food though...(heck I should eat it and I would be in a much better place too)!
All of my dogs are getting older, and Dr. Bammel cares for them as she would her own. She is a credit to her profession, and an excellent vet.
"We are now open 6 days a week! We look forward to seeing you soon!"
