Valve was still not working so I paid $34 on Groupon again for $75 Value. I did not hear from them for 2 days after the purchase so I called them. Quickly answered the phone and worked with me to schedule a day and time. He was punctual for the appointment. On arrival he quoted me $150 to dig up and replace the valve and said it would take about an hour. He said the groupon coupon covered only the cost to dispatch a truck or him and did not apply towards the repair. Said it was standard to charge $80 service fee just to come to show up. He agreed to replace the valve for $125. He said his cost was about $30 for valve and wanted to cover his cost of labor to dig valve up and replace.
Finished the job in about 30 minutes, showed me a bad diaphragm. Said the other valves will probably needed to be replaced because they were all installed about the same time. I paid the $125 without looking the repair.
After he left, I looked at the repair and saw all he did was replace the diaphragm in the valve. I called him to confirm this and he said that is what he did, just replace the diaphragm. I asked why I paid the full $125 and not a discounted amount since he didnt have to dig up the valve. He replied that a "standard cost" to dig and replace a valve is $200, implying I did get a discount.
I disagree. He told me the price to replace was $125 which included digging and then took the easiest route to fix the valve which I don't mind except his original price included the effort to dig. I feel the price should be discounted when he found and chose an easier way to fix the problem.
I also feel the $49 Groupon should have been honored. No where on the coupon does it say for Diagnostics Only. It says $75 Groupon Texas Sprinkler Works.
I will not use this company again.
"First off I never mentioned anything about "digging up" a valve. We avoid cutting into system pipe whenever possible to keep the pipe welds strong and so we don't create extra work when it isn't needed. If I would have had to dig up the valve that would have been an entirely different conversation than the one we had. Second, it is clear you are a DIY (do it yourself) homeowner, which is fine, but any price point a company gives you to perform a service will be "high" in your estimation. This is clearly shown by the fact you installed your own controller after declining our quote. We use contractor professional grade materials on all the work we perform and like so many things in life you get what you pay for. The model controller you installed yourself for $49 is made by Orbit and isn't sold by any irrigation contractor supplier in San Antonio because it is not a quality controller. It will work and you can find it at Home Depot or Lowes but no contractor worth his salt would install that brand of controller hence the pricier quote you were given to install a professional grade controller. The valve we replaced for you is an Irritrol valve, a well respected brand in our industry that you can't find at Home Depot or Lowes. I never tried to sell you on replacing any other valves I simply made you aware that all the valves in your system were installed at the same time and might be coming to the end of their life cycle. We charge $80 to roll out a truck which covers the service charge and diagnostic fee. Standard in our industry, no other customers seem to have a problem with this charge. To replace a valve we charge $150 ($225 if we need to dig up and re-pipe). Again, pretty much standard in our industry no other customers seem to have a problem with this charge. I discounted the work on the valve for you as a courtesy because you were an existing customer (something I didn't have to do). I showed you the old diaphragm to let you know what to look for should you have a problem with another valve. I did this because I know you are a DIY homeowner and the next valve that goes out you will probably try and replace yourself. I'm sorry you felt like you didn't get good value for the money you paid. We have plenty of customers that would vehemently disagree with your assessment. I never have a problem with a customer giving us feedback (positive or negative). It is truly the only way for a company to get better. I do take issue with a customer giving a skewed view of an interaction they have had with my company. I work hard and take pride in what I do and understand for a business to survive/thrive honesty is crucial and I approach every customer with this in mind."
