Shaw owner came out (very late) then came in with attitude. he did not seem interested in job at all. then when i started going over what we wanted and needed, he kept interrupting with his recommendations before i could finish my sentences. i would ask why he recommended and he just would answer , I'm a professional , i ve been doing this for a long time.
he quoted, what we found very high..... "$70,000 and up"
He quickly went on to ask for a deposit without even acknowledging what we wanted or needed! no quote, no blueprint, no drawing, nothing just ..."give a blank check and ill do what i want attitude"
We didn't go with Shaw and ended using a much less expensive and more professional and more attentive contractor.
"The issues stated do not reflect the way our company operates: -We were in this home on precisely 3/4/2011 which is almost 4 years ago -Absolutely no work was done by our company (except the free estimate we left behind totaling $24,000 - MUCH less than the "$85,000" that was claimed) - we are more than happy to provide a copy of the proposal that we left with the customer -With over 18 years in business and over 300 happy clients each year - we believe this person has us confused with someone else - it does not seem fair to receive such an awful "F" from someone we did not have the opportunity to work for"
"Thank you so much for your review! We are glad you let us work in your home and we're so happy it turned out as great as you had hoped!"
"Thank you so much for the review! We appreciate you and all of the business that you have given us!"
"Thank you so much for your review! You are the reason we all get to do what we love for a living! Your kitchen turned out AWESOME and we can't wait to see how the professional pictures turn out!"
"Thank you for your review, we are so glad you are loving your bathroom!"
"Thank you! We enjoyed working with you are we are so happy that you love your "new" house!"
The Shaw Company did an outstanding job all the way around. They were very responsive from the first call to obtain a bid until the job was 100% complete to our satisfaction. They use their own employees who are focused on quality and customer satisfaction. We are very pleased and will use them again for our next project.
Since they use their own employees we weren't waiting on contractors, they completed the job 2 weeks ahead of time. Prior to signing a contract we had a few questions about the design, the owner Eric Shaw came out with the superintendent and assured us that we would be complete satisfied.
My wife and I highly recommend Shaw for any home remodeling project. They are true professionals.
"Thank you so much for your review! We love what we do and it is people like you that make our dream possible!"
"We have never done work for a customer by this name, nor have we worked for anyone with this address/street name. This review needs to be removed from Angie's List."
The owner, Eric Shaw, is a smooth salesman, but you won't see much of him after you sign your contract, which is when we gave our deposit. He'll give you his cell phone number only to deflect every issues/problem to his right hand man, Juan. The company surely could not survive without Juan, yet he is spread too thin and is unable to spend any real amount of time supervising the job. Our start date was 6 weeks after we signed our contract, which was a 3 weeks later than promised. We had many delays due to multiple errors and had to provide constant supervision. Cabinets were incorrect five times, and the granite fabrication we received was not what we ordered yet was installed anyway. The company insisted on attempting to correct the granite (6 times), causing delays, but eventually replaced it at our repeated request. Shaw has some good subs, but evidently not enough to cover all of the jobs to which they commit. In the end, the job was done to our satisfaction, yet it wasn't without headaches. Our 4 week project took 3 months and is beautiful.
Shaw also claims that they guarantee their work, however, when we called recently to have them come back for a repair, we were told they would come if we provided a review on Angie's List. The initial review was done, but they still didn't show when promised. Since our initial review, the company called and asked us to change our rating, again promising they would be available to us in the future, if the review was changed to a more favorable one.
12/30/13: We expected Juan to arrive at our house on 12/27 at 3pm, for a repair, but he didn't. I spoke to Maegan @ 3:15pm on 12/27 to check on his arrival. She said she would call Juan and call me back. Maegan never called back, nor did Juan show up, or respond to my text. Today, I called to follow up and Maegan put Eric on the phone. Eric refused to speak to me and said he would only discuss repair issue with my husband. While on speaker, Eric requested from my husband "man to man" to have me remove my reviews, as "it was costing him jobs and money". He told my husband that he would arrange for the repair, regardless of my review, and I'll keep you updated on that. After all, this is the purpose of Angie's List.
And to Eric, if you would like to discuss this review, you have my number.
1/10/14: WARRANTY REPAIRS HAVE NOT BEEN DONE. ERIC SHAW, OWNER, REFUSES OUR PHONE CALLS AND ALL REQUESTS TO REPAIR ITEMS UNDER WARRANTY. DO NO USE THIS COMPANY!!!
"We do not believe this customer's description of our work is either fair or accurate. As a company, we work very hard to satisfy all of our clients even though some are more difficult to work with than others. We appreciate the comment that the project is beautiful."
"Thank you! We appreciate your review and hope to be able to work with you in the future!"
We will certainly refer Shaw Company to our friends and neighbors and continue to use them for any future remodeling projects.
"Thank you for your kind words. We enjoyed working with you and look forward to helping you with future projects!"
"We are sorry that this person felt it necessary to say this on Angies List, especially considering no "legal action" is even relevant. We do apologize that they felt it was a "nightmare," however there is absolutely nothing in this situation that would require legal. We have attempted to contact the customer since late May with no response. After multiple punch lists, this job was completed months ago and actually looks wonderful!"
"Though we didn't end up working together, thank you for considering Shaw Company. We appreciate your feedback."
The good things:
Shower and tiling done was exceptional. The tiing subcontractor did a great job, but would have finished the job much sooner if he someone working with him.
Seamless glass makes the shower, and was worth the delay.
Plumbing and Electrical work was great. Easily connected our shower system, and did such a great job that when the Countertops were reset (see below), I was able to hook up the plumbing myself.
All sub-contractors were neat, and took great care of my property. Carpet protector was used, and all work was cleaned up at the end of the day.
The not so good things:
Change orders not submitted to us in a timely fashion, and office staff not responsive to e-mails. When my wife picked out tile for the bathroom in January, the flooring tile was over $30 a square foot. She was not told this at the design meeting, and we did not know the cost until 4 weeks after the design meeting, so needless to say, we choose something else. It even took 2 weeks and an e-mail to get my paid in full receipt.
Vanities were a custom size, but were not of custom quality. Several things had to be corrected that I have listed below, which took an additional 6 weeks.
Countertop on top of the "his" vanity had to be reset, as it was not installed correctly. The difference was an inch between each side, and was very noticeable.
The work was finally completed on the 8th of May, which included replacing a cracked vanity door and respraying the vanities to even out the finish, which gave a 13 week start to finish for this project. Before this, the inside of the medicine cabinets had to be refinished because of black overspray inside on light wood interiors of both cabinets. There were several false starts in getting this completed. The first e-mail said by the 19th of April, then a phone message from the construction manager was that it would actually be May 1st. This also did not happen, so after another e-mail, the work was finally completed on the 8th. The vanities are now acceptable, but it did take a lot of effort on my part to get them completed.
Overall, the quality of work was good, with the cabinet work bringing the rating down from excellent. However, the communication with Shaw Remodeling as problems arose and the time it took from beginning to end (over 3 months) was way too long in my opinion.
He advised us that we'd need to purchase the appliances before they started the work and that once the appliances arrived, he'd come back out with the project manager for our work to go through details with him/take measurements etc. In the mean time, we went to the showroom and selected/confirmed our stone and paint colors. Once we had the appliances, they came out to complete that part within a few days. They scheduled work to start the following week (a Thursday I believe) but the project manager (Juan) called us early in the week (that Monday) and said they could start the next day! They started on a Tuesday and completed the work in about 2 1/2 weeks.
We hit one relatively major snag. We had selected a large natural stone and we had been told that the manufacturer made the same stone in a smaller size. We were only able to view the large stone in the showroom I believe. I selected the large stone for under our bar area and the smaller for the backsplash. They put all the backsplash stone up and then the larger stone and it was clear that the color of the backsplash stone was way off when you compared the two. We called the project manager (Juan) who looked again at the smaller stone and confirmed it was the stone we ordered in the same color as the larger pieces however, since it's natural stone, the batch we got was just way too muted. It wasn't even close to the same and Juan agreed with us. He and Eric worked with us and they replaced the entire backsplash at a reduced fee. Lesson learned on my end! Always review the product in person before it goes up!
We had our cabinets painted white (from a natural oak finish). They took all the cabinet doors off and painted them at their shop. Juan suggested that we have them spray the paint on for a smoother finish but said the smell would be very strong. However, they did such a great job taping everything up (this was incredibly labor intensive work) and putting up the plastic to cover doorways that when we were in our living room you couldn't even smell the paint!
Their guys worked most nights until at least 7pm and one full Saturday (they would have done another but we needed a break!). I do not know what time they showed up daily as we were not home. I would suggest that if you need the workers to be gone by a certain time in the evenings that you make that clear upfront so they can estimate how long the work will take under that timeline.
Their crew was nice and considerate (talked quietly while we were home) and they seemed to work hard. Juan was knowledgeable and gave accurate timelines and expectations. The only reason I gave a B on responsiveness and punctuality was because we had to wait an extra day or two for our cabinet sample and because we usually had to wait on Juan a little longer than he estimated when he was coming over in the evenings. But really those weren't huge issues and we got what we needed in the end.
Overall, we are so pleased with how the work turned out and we plan on using them when we remodel our master bathroom.
"We are so glad that everything worked out after the natural stone situation...your pictures look awesome! Thank you very much for your review, we look forward to doing your bathroom for you!"
Making my selection at the showroom was a great experience. Megan gave me great advice and helped with my decisions.
The remodel began on the scheduled day and I can't say enough not only about the work that was performed, by Joe Champion and his crew, but also about the professionlism they all exhibited while here during the remodel.
Thank you all.
I love my kitchen!!!!!!!!!
well. Painting done well. Windows installed adequately, though, I had to
mention to the installers to keep the weep holes clear. They had begun
to cover over them. The front door was re-installed with hardware
backwards. (i fixed it.). The workers didn't/couldn't read the
instructions. The company laid tile in my back room. There was a 3-yr
warrenty on the install and remodeling work. The tiles had no expansion
room. Some tiles cracked when the house shifted. It took me months to
get the repair done, though they did eventually honor the warranty.
Staff were pleasant to work with, but some crew/installers were
incompetent.
state while the guys completed the job. They did a great job and
finished within the time we needed them to. There were a few
miscommunications that were easily corrected (painting French doors,
painting some of the other doors in the house that were not replaced)
and performed in a timely manner.
To be honest, I am shocked at some
of the reviews on here. We would definitely use this company again; we
love the look of our house and we feel that Juan and his crew did a
fantastic job. We would not hesitate to give them our business again.
We initially picked this company because we liked their showroom and my husband liked the tile selection that they were offering. They came out, looked at the area to be worked on and Eric gave us the quote on the spot and said it would take 7-10 business days to complete. We decided to go with them and paid half up front. After several weeks they said the tile was in and they could schedule the job. Eric came over with Richard (who said was the job supervisor) and Richard said it would take more like 10-14 business days. They were supposed to start the following Mon (this was the end of Aug). The first day they ran the carpet protector and a worker came with Richard. He showed him the job and was going to leave. I asked re the lock box so they could get into the house and he took the key and said he would set that up. They did the demo in 1 day and when no one showed up for the next few days I called the office. They said the plumber would be there the next day, that he had gotten hung up on another job. He came the day after and put in some of the new plumbing. What followed was several months of issues with communication (we would call the office with an issue and when we pursued it we would hear that the message hadn't been passed on or that the workers had no idea what we were talking about). Some of the workers were better than others, however we had problems with them changing things (like the design of the tile, and the size of the bench without asking us). They were good about allowing us to change the accent tile that we picked when the change in the design (their idea) resulted in a pattern that we didn't like. We had issues with some of their construction decisions (like cutting a niche in the wall that the shower shares with the bedroom and not putting anything in between the drywall and the mortar and tile-hope nobody tries to put a nail through that area). I frequently came home from work and had to vacuum and sweep up the mess from that day's work. We had broken tile in our driveway and paint on our porch. When we had Eric and Richard come out to look at the areas we had issues with they would say that it wasn't a big deal and wasn't it a great looking shower (the design is very nice and turned out well, however up close the craftsmanship is poor even to someone who doesn't know what they are looking at). We finally got to use our shower the week before Thanksgiving. 2 weeks later we had water coming from our dining room ceiling. They came out the next day and fixed the ceiling downstairs and the leak in the drain and since then we have been trying to get the grout to match and for them to fix all the other clean-up issues and poor workmanship. They came today to fix an area that still hadn't been grouted and to fix the tile that had been broken sometime in the last few days while they had been here working on things. The workers early on used our step stool which would have been fine except they left it covered with grout and paint. My husband bought another one and despite asking them to use the messed up one when they were repainting the dining room ceiling they used the new one (so now it has paint on it also). They also got spots of paint on the surrounding surfaces (the dining room table and chairs, kitchen floor, kitchen cabinets, and even my purse). Obviously they didn't bother to put up any kind of barrier when they were repainting the ceiling. The ceiling repair did turn out better then we had hoped at least. We have not paid the other half of the job and are probably not going to until it seems like we aren't going to have any more leaks. I joined Angie's List a couple of days after we hired them and was nervous when I saw the reviews that had been submitted, but I was prepared to give them every opportunity to make thing good so I could give them a good review. Unfortunately the issues with communication, the long delay in getting the work done, the lack of attention to detail, and the issues with fixing things that we pointed out as problems have made it so that I cannot give them a positive review. At this point we want things to be right but we also want to be done with them.
06/01/2014 Update: Approximately a year after we wrote them the final check we noticed water dripping from our dining room ceiling. After pulling the drywall off we discovered that it was coming from the master shower. Eric came out after we called them with the issue and it was determined that the shower was (again!) leaking into the dining room ceiling. The leak was small enough to take this long for the drywall to get saturated. The floor of our shower was removed and the liner and tile were redone. This part of the process didn't take more than a week or two. Fortunately we had extra from the job so everything still matched. Getting them to replace the ceiling took longer due to delays on their part and us wanting to make sure that the new floor didn't appear to be leaking before we put the ceiling back. While we are happy that they fixed the work without fussing about payment we wish that there hadn't been this issue in the first place.
09/2015 Update: Our renter called to say that there is water leaking into the dining room again. They have sent pictures and it appears to be in the exact some location as the previous leak. We hope this isn't the case but we will have to hire someone to figure out what is happening so we know if we need to call Shaw again. Hope it's something simple this time!
