We scheduled this appointment two months out and I took off work to be home for him to show up. He didn't show up and didn't contact me. I then called him and he said he had left me a voicemail, which he hadn't. He said his truck was broken down and he couldn't make it. He tried to reschedule for Sunday, but I told him I won't be around Sunday. I told him he could come tomorrow and he said he has another job tomorrow. I told him since he was bumping me I thought he should bump his job for tomorrow too since I can't be here on Sunday. He said he wouldn't bump the job so I told him I would use someone else and he hung up on me. I think this is a very poor way to do busniess.
Response from Brandes Paint & Wallpapering

"I was scheduled to do the member's painting on Friday September 28th. The previous evening my truck broke down and had to go in for repairs on the clutch. I did call and leave a message but I had his contact number confused with someone elses number, which I didn't realize until the next morning. I apologize for this mistake, but that's all it was, an honest mistake. I did try and reschedule on Sunday two days later. It's false that he told me he wouldn't be around on Sunday, the negotiations never got that far. He got mad and demanded that I bump my scheduled customer for the next day, which I told him I couldn't do, and is also I wouldn't do to him in a similar situation. Then I would have two unhappy customers. I understand his frustration with the situation but other than the mix up on the phone number these matters were beyond my control. I apologize for my mistake once again, I did try and try to bring this to a happy conclusion but he said he was going to get someone else, at which time I said to do what he thought he needed to do. This was a very unfortunate outcome stemming out of a simple mistake that could have been rectified just as simply, but again I was never given that opportunity."

David was very friendly. He returned all phone calls promptly. I initially asked him if he could do sheetrock texturing for me rather than the painting as the coupon stated.  He said that was no problem he could do texturing.  It was a bit disappointing to hear of his busy schedule.  I guess the the special offer (Painter for a Day for $199) from Angies list made it hard to get a timely appointment to get the work done. He was booked up 3+ months in advance.
He called a week before the job and confirmed.  He arrived on time.  He immediately got to work.  He criticized the existing prep work and told me he could not texture in the time allotted by te coupon because the prep work was sub-standard.  He told me it would need one day prep work to do the texturing I wanted done. He said the sheetrock was not ready for the style of texture I requested.  He proceeded to begin sanding to get the job started.  After sanding for about 30-45 minutes he offered another suggestion to texturing our four rooms.  It required mudding all entire surfaces again and leaving light circular swirl marks with the taping knife.  He show my wife and I the result on one wall.  I was hesitant but we waited so long for this guy and I know my wife wanted to get the job done.  At the time I didn't know whatelse could we do to get the job completed and he had already been paid for one day of work so I wanted to use him.  My wife and I agreed to his method of texturing.
I worked along side David and he worked very hard and I was impressed by his.work ethic.
In the end the drawback was two-fold:
1) He convinced me to do a texture I did not hire him to do and
2) he did not complete as much as he said he would.  He finished 3 rooms but initially had promised 4 rooms done after two days.  He even assured me at the end of day one and the begining of day two he would get the job completed.
I hired him to do knock-down spray texturing. I trusted his opinion and chose his method but after he left it did not look good.  It actually looked like unfinished sheetrock - we were very disappointed with the end result.  It was not necessarily David's fault we agreed to his change so I don't blame him for the result of the work done.  After a few visitors came to the house and made comment about the work my wife and I decided I would do the texturing we hired David to do and just cover up his work in the three rooms.  Thus, I ended up doing the spray texture myself.  I even did my style of texturing on the forth room David did not get to.  The fourth room was in the original state, a state that David said was not preprared properly for the type of texturing I wanted.  I went ahead and textured it anyway to see how it turned out.  It looked better than his style of texture and the wall and ceiling was not even prepared to his standard and I (the amature) completed the entire job (all 4 rooms) in one day total (two 1/2 days - Friday evening and Saturday morning). Go figure.
I tried to hire a professional to do what I thought was the hardest part of the sheetrocking process. In the end he worked hard doing what he thought was best for me and my wife. However the end result of David's recommendation was not satisfactory to me and my wife. I ended up doing the job in the style of texturing type (spray knoock-down) I wanted to hire him for, and we love the end result of my work.
I learned a few lessons from this experience.  1) The professionals are not always right and sometimes you need to stand firm, even if he criticized my prep work.  2) I could have textured the wall in the original state and been happy with the result even though he said it would not work. 3) He scheduled us for two days right from the beginning when we booked the one-day coupon several months back. That should have been a warning sign for me that things were not going to go smoothly and more time and money would be required.
I listened to a pro and I regretted it.  In the end I wish I had been firm and asked him to do what we desired. Looking back I should have had him prep one day and texture the next day.  Then at least I would have had the job complete the way I wanted and he would have had the walls prepped the way he wanted. Instead we did the very time consuming method he chose and the results were disappointing and I paid him for an additional day of work that in the end turned out to be wasted time and money. Oh well, lesson learned. It is not all David's fault, except maybe persuading us to do something else we didn't hire him for.  My wife and I are the ones that agreed so I don't hold it against him.  We could have sent him away when he initially said it would not work and he needed another day.  He is a very nice man and did work very hard both days so I debated whether to even leave feedback.  As you can see I decided to leave a feedback, but please understand this is only our experience and my wife and I are much to blame for the end result of his work.  I am just trying to share what happened from our perspective in hopes that other will not make a similar mistake with a contactor.  We just learned a $398 lesson from all this, but I am not angry with David Brandes - he is a really nice guy and I enjoyed working with him.

David was excellent. He contacted me prior to the appointment to recommend furniture be moved. With my schedule, he was responsive and accountable in coming to the house prmptly and starting work on time. He covered the furniture/bookcase which could not be moved and protected the flooring. He has a strong work ethic and I would recommend him.  The end result was an enhancement to the room.

.I purchased 2 coupons for $199 each for 7 hours of painting in early May and called Mr Brandes to set up a time.  His schedule was very booked but I was flexible and we agreed upon the beginning of August.  We discussed what I wanted done (trim painting) and I emailed pictures to him.  He sent me his recommendation on what paint was needed and also what supplies were needed.  I purchased everything he asked for and worked with Sherwin Williams to color match the paints.
Mr Brandes was very prompt and came prepared to work.  Even while walking through the house and discussing paints, I never felt that he was wasting time.  Since the house is large, we tried to prioritize the work and he let me know right up front that he would not be able to complete everything asked in the 2 days.  He worked non-stop both days and was very pleasant to have in the house.
At the end of each day, he cleaned up all of the materials and left the house in good order.
I felt comfortable scheduling a return visit in November to complete tasks that he didn't get to.  Thank you for a positive Angie's List experience!

David was prompt and worked pretty much non-stop all day.  We had hoped to paint more than one room, but the existing paint was very absorbent, so the new paint needed extra coats.  David had to stop and wait on us a bit as we drove to the hardware store to get more paint on two occasions.
David was polite, professional, and paid careful attention to detail which is important to me.
If I had any complaint at all, it is just that we scheduled him out two months in advance, and when it was a few days away from the appointment, I had trouble reaching him to confirm that he was indeed still coming.  This is really just an additional desired perk, however since he showed up as originally scheduled.

I was new to Angies list & somewhat skeptical; when I saw the coupon for interior paint at $199 I was sure there was a catch. Dave called about a week after I purchased the coupon to schedule a paint time; I was not scheduled as quickly as I would have liked, but I knew at that price he was extremely busy; my appointment was scheduled a little over a month out; but I was willing to work with that. I must admit I did raise a brow when he stated during the conversation that it might be a two day job & I may need to purchase another coupon; I thought to myself; here we go; this is how they get you; but that was not the case at all. Me being me; I was skeptical up until the time Dave arrived at our home; he was very prompt; came in to survey the areas & immediately went to work; even helped my spouse move a few items prior to starting. He is a dynamic one man show; he repaired minor damages to the walls from picture hanging, even though he was not fully prepared to do so; we are very please with his work; especially how willing he was to advise us; and how maticulous he was with his craft. We would not hesitate to use him again. I now feel I can relax with the Angies List contractors. Good first impressions are always the best in my opinion. Thanks Dave for a job well done! May God continue to bless you!

I purchased two of his big deal coupons. He showed up on time explained what he was going to do and that he could complete the job in 2 days. He was very punctual and worked very hard the whole 7hrs each day. He was very personable and professional. I actually liked his work so much, I hired him to do some more work for me scheduled in October. I would recommend this gentleman to everyone.

My house is 11 years old and I wanted to get walls touched up. David was great in explaining how it may turn look because I did not have the correct 'flat' finish. I had bought 'matte' and he said he would do whatever I wanted. I still wanted him to use the matte finish I had ordered and what he did looks great. I also had the wrong paing for trim and cabinets. (I didn't even know he would do those.) He asked if I still had paint from my builder and I had kept them in the corner of the garage. He said since it was oil-based it may still be usable. I was skeptical but he opened the container, broke through the crust on top and showed me 'good paint'. I left for work and returned before he was scheduled to leave. He was working on the door trim in the garage (another unexpected treat). I am very happy with his work and I've asked for estimates to do whole rooms for me in the future. He also does wallpaper!

David confirmed that he would be arriving at 8:30 on Monday the 30th.  He arrived at 8:30.  He got right to work in the kitchen.  I had purchased the wrong kind of paint for the door/wood trim, so I ran to get the right paint while David did the walls in the kitchen.  He was prompt, pleasant and a perfectionist.  He worked the entire day he was contracted for.  At the end of the day, the kitchen looked perfect AND David cleaned up so that you would never have known the room had just been done!
Excellent job, we will be having David do much more work in our home!

Overall I was very satisfied, he was on time, did a great job with the detail work. Regarding the ceiling.... as we discussed what needed to be done, he advised upfront that the portion of the ceiling that connected to the entryway ceiling might look different due to the difficulty of matching the paint. I figured that the ceiling leading into the entry would be different since it is 10 yrs old and has normal wear. I understood that it would be difficult to blend and appreciated his honesty. He did his best to blend the two and by no fault of Brandes it just didnt look right. So I asked him to come back to do the entry and dining room as well ( it was all connected). He came back with a reasonable price, returned quickly and did a great job.

He was professional & very neat. He did a good job. However, he turned on a attic fan without opening a door or window & since we don't use it that often we had something stored near it which ended up being pulled into the louvers. It didn't do any damage, but he may just want to ask about turning on switches before just doing so.

While it took a bit to get scheduled as Brandes is a busy company, it's easy to see why he is so busy.  Mr. Brandes followed up with me early in the week before my appointment to paint my baseboards and answered questions regarding types, quantities, etc. of paint to buy in advance of his arrival. He requested pictures of the areas to be painted so that he could get a feel for the project before arriving. He was punctual, professional and offered suggestions and advice during his work, ultimately leaving any decisions to me as the "boss."  I'd use him again and likely will.

When I initially spoke to David on the phone and described the work that needed to be done, he thought he would be able to do both rooms in two days.  I purchased the paint for the trim, walls and ceilings for both rooms in preparation.  Once David arrived (on time, even a few minutes early!) and was able to get a real feel for the project, he informed us that he would do his very best, but that he was concerned that there was more work to do than he might be able to accomplish in two days.  All of the trim work in the dining room alone took a full day to complete with oil-based paint.  Despite his best efforts, David was only able to complete the dining room in the 2 days.  This is not a criticism!  I would MUCH rather have the painting done well than have someone rush to meet a deadline.  We're so happy with the work that David did (which looks awesome!), we're having him come back to do a lot more work in August.

Mr. Brandes was at my home on two separate days, working in a new guest apartment.  We had gutted an old apartment down to the studs and bare concrete.  I purchased a coupon for one day to correct rough spots in carpenter installed new drywall, specifically overcuts around electric plates.

Before coming to work the first day, Mr. Brandes and I had talked and emailed several times about the job and the required supplies.  We each had the necessary materials on hand for the first day.  Mr. Brandes arrived as scheduled.

Work the first day appeared to go well.  Mr. Brandes put a more professional finish on the drywall.   I was surprised to find that he had even spot painted over his repairs.  Since the first day?s work seemed to go so well, I asked him to look at the remaining interior work.

The remaining work consisted of painting one short wall in the main room, and dry-walling and painting around a prefab shower unit in the bathroom. Mr. Brandes said he could complete those tasks in one additional day.  He instructed me to buy a second Angie?s List coupon and he would put me on his schedule.  Mr. Brandes would not schedule a second day until I purchased a coupon for a second day.

A couple of weeks later I purchased the second coupon.  His first available day was six weeks out, which I took.  I had other parts of the project to work on.

The day before Mr. Brandes was scheduled to work the second day, on a Sunday afternoon, he called asking if he could come the following Saturday instead of Monday.  He did not offer a reason for the change and delay, so I said no.  I had another subcontractor scheduled to come in right behind him, and I?d already waited a long time to get him back.  Mr. Brandes ended that call abruptly, without discussing the project or supplies or anything further.

Mr. Brandes showed-up Monday morning with a bad attitude, like he was mad because I needed him to keep his appointment.  Our first problem was that he did not have any drywall mud, and he expected me to go buy some.

Then I discovered that I did not have as much paint left as I had thought, because Mr. Brandes had filled my empty paint cans with water on his first day.  At this early time in our day, he had become surly.  Then he asks me if I am using metal strips, and I tell him I don?t have metal strips.  I did not then know what metal corner strips were.

In order to keep Mr. Brandes working I had to make an immediate Home Depot run for paint and drywall mud.  Mr. Brandes instructed me to purchase more than $90 in paint, to touch-up less than 500 square feet.  The drywall mud he requested turned out to be the slow drying type.  Metal corner strips were not on his list.  I purchased and delivered the requested supplies to Mr. Brandes, and left him alone.

When I went back about noon to check on his work, the shower drywall seemed good until he said ?I haven?t done corners by hand in years.?  I asked him to explain why my job was different.  He said that since I had not let him use metal corner strips, he had spent all morning performing a task that normally required an hour.  He continued, explaining that without the protecting metal strips, the exposed corners would chip and break easily.

I asked him why he had not instructed me to purchase the strips when I went to Home Depot earlier in the day.  He replied that I seemed to know what I was doing.  He also said he would not be able to paint the shower drywall, since I had purchased the wrong mud.

I told Mr. Brandes that it appeared that he had not provided me with his best professional advice regarding standard industry practice.  Consequently, his work had taken twice as long, and would all have to be redone.   Mr. Brandes replied that he just did what I told him to.

Next, I turned on all the lights in the main room.  Paint that was still wet and looked fine at the end of the first day looked horrible in the bright noon light.  I asked Mr. Brandes why there were splotches on the dark accent wall showing badly?   He said I had obviously used inferior materials.  In a short time, he packed ?up and left, without saying another word to me.

Everything on this job came from Home Depot.  The new drywall was all sealed with Home Depot new drywall primer.  Every surface had been primed and painted once before Mr. Brandes was hired to correct some minor drywall issues, finish-out the shower, and paint a little.

Mr. Brandes did not have to stay and talk to me because I had made the mistake of prepaying him by buying an Angie?s List coupon.  Good reviews do not mean an individual will stand behind their work.   Mr. Brandes left the job suddenly, leaving more than half the agreed upon work for the second day undone.

Virtually everything Mr. Brandes worked on during the two days had to be reworked.  I hired a paint/drywall contractor from Angie?s List.  I paid them $200 just to properly install two $1.50 metal corner strips.  Everything had to be repainted, costing $840 plus additional paint.  I still have more than half the paint Mr. Brandes instructed me to buy, another waste.
Response from Brandes Paint & Wallpapering

"On my first visit to this member's job she already had all her materials. Who ever she had doing the mud work before i came along had didn't have the experience necessary to do a good job and it was an absolute mess, which is part of what she wanted fixed. I told her the only way to make it look right was to totally remud the walls. She didn't want to do this so I did the best I could to touch up the bad mud work on the walls. I also informed her that they might turn out to be a little patchy because she was touching up walls that had been painted with a gloss paint, and the primer she bought was an inferior product which I never use. She had it already and insisted I use it. I did as she even stated try to get her to use metal corners but she declined to do so. I don't know how she sees that as my fault because I did present this procedure to her. As far as showing up without materials this is totally false. Per the stipulations on the coupon I do and did supply at least 20.00 worth of materials out of my own supplies. I needed more mud to finish the job which was in keeping with the coupon agreement. These metal corners are industry standard which is why I asked her to use them, but again she declined. I did leave after seven hours because it was a seven hour coupon and I was finished as well. All these potential problems she was forewarned of by me. As far as getting less work done than what we had planned, she changed the work load by not following advice presented to her and using inferior materials. I did call to inquire about changing days but when she said that wouldn't work I arrived as previously scheduled. Once again all these problems could have been avoided because she was informed of all these details. This regrettable and not at all the outcome I desired."
