The technician that came, was different then the first one they sent out, arrived on time. He went up into the attic and did the inspection. He found 2 problems and did a quick fix on one of the problems. After he finished with the repair, he came downstairs and explained everything that was going on and the entire system that I had. He gave me his recommendations, which I intend to use.

They were great. We had an emergency after hours issue. They came as quickly as they could. They were professional and helpful. They went out of their way to help us until we made a decision of what to do. They even brought air units for us to use at no charge to us, until we made our decision. It was the hottest part of the summer. They were very helpful.

This company is usually very punctual. They've only been late once. I like the fact that I can ask the technician questions. The first time I didn't even know what kind of system I had and how it compared to others so he explained it to me. The fact that they're willing to take the time to explain things to me meant a lot. Some companies just want your money and get the job done and leave but Total doesn't do that.

They estimated the job. They were quick to install the furnace and replace the ductwork. However, they failed on the first installation to remove approximately 20% of the ductwork that was in an area not easy to get to. Even though the supervisor was aware of it at the beginning of the job, he evidently failed to communicate that section to the workers. They did come back a second time to finish the job. Then, however, we noticed that the vent pipe from the stove through attic out through roof had been left dismantled. So they had to come back a third time to reattach that. The city inspector said the work was fine and that the city's experience with them is excellent. We are satisfied with the quality of the installation itself, but were disappointed that they had to be called back twice to finish the job.
Response from Total Air & Heat Co

"WE APPRECIATE THE FEEDBACK GIVEN ON THIS JOB. AS THE CUSTOMER HAS STATED: THE DUCT WE MISSED WAS BECAUSE ACCESS TO IT WAS FROM A DIFFERENT PART OF THE HOUSE AND ALSO VERY DIFFICULT TO GET TO. WE ARE VERY SORRY WE DID NOT CATCH THIS THE 1ST TIME, WHILE THIS WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE ON OUR BEHALF, WE STILL SHOULD NOT HAVE MISSED IT. IN ADDITION WE HAVE A QUALITY FOLLOW UP THAT OCCURS WITHIN A FEW DAYS AFTER THE INSTALLATION. WE WOULD HAVE FOUND THE DUCTS WE MISSED AT THAT TIME. IN REGARDS TO THE LOOSE VENT PIPE FOR THE STOVE, I THINK THE ORIGINAL STRAP HOLDING IT WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURED, METAL VENT PIPE IS SCREWED TOGETHER AND SHOULD NOT FALL APART. REGARDLESS OF WHY THE STOVE'S VENT PIPE FELL APART, WE REPAIRED IT AT NO CHARGE. BEST REGARDS, STEVE LAUTEN PRESIDENT"

They are a very good company. They are knowledgeable. They knew what they problem was when they looked at it. They knew how to position the unit. They understand airflow and making the system for are particular place. They advised repositioning the unit and told us how the layout should be.

Technician arrived promptly and identified himself. Put on booties before coming into the house--a nice touch. Inspected the units and thermostats. Discovered that these new units had not been wired properly and explained in detail what was wrong. Did not try to sell us his service, but recommended that we have the installing company return to do the job right. Made sure we understood exactly what was needed to tell the other company. In a follow up, the original company confirmed his evaluation and agreed to return to correct the installation.

Had used a heating and a/c company for years. Then the heating and a/c company came by for an inspection and 4 hours after they left, cooling system failed. They came back out and said I needed cooling AND heating system replacement - no options - not real impressed with this. Shopped around and used home improvement store as an option. They sent Total Air and everything went great. Fast delivery and set up and clean up. They said it was not necessary to replace furnace until it dies - my thought exactly.

Wes was very friendly and professional. He explained what was wrong and showed me the part that had failed. He had a replacement available on the truck and was done in less than 30 minutes. We anticipate having Total Air & Heat back out in the fall just to do a thorough check of our heating system before it gets cold.

It went excellent! They were amazing workers since it was about 110 degrees outside, much less what the temperature was in the attic where they were working, probably up there about 120 degrees. They kept after and did a fabulous job and will definitely get all of my business in the future.

We interviewed and received bids from several contractors. Based upon our research, we were confident that Total Heating & Air could do top quality work at a fair price, which they did. Total Heating & Air inspected our 28 year old air conditioning system. They provided the same conclusion as other contractors that our five ton unit was too small for our house with expansion. Unlike other contractors, they also showed us that we had only one return air vent for the entire house. When they installed the new air conditioning and furnace, they increased to a five ton unit plus four air returns, which now provides an even temperature throughout the entire house. We also paid to have Total move the air handling equipment out of a hall closet into the attic, which has made the system almost unnoticeable when it is operating. The temperature has reached over 105 degrees outdoors several days this summer; our new A/C has kept our home totally comfortable. The salesman from Total was very knowledgeable, honest and kept us from spending money on options that we did not need. The installation crew arrived promptly on the scheduled day and worked hard and efficiently until the hot, messy job was finished. The crew was courteous, honest, and a real delight to work with. The entire team from Total performed way above and beyond anything we could have expected.

We've used Total Air and Heat for a couple of years now, and have them perform checkups of the heating and ac systems each year. During the last routine inspection of the heat exchanger the technician found major cracks in the unit, which can be extremely dangerous. He was very thorough in his inspection, and took his time in explaining the issue he had found and taking us up into the attic to point out the cracks. We worked with Total Air and they installed a new heat exchanger in a very timely manner, the technicians were nothing but professional, our white carpet was spotless, runners were laid down, the install was done very quickly and our new unit works wonders. We wouldn't consider using anyone but Total Air and Heat to work on our systems.

Russ and his trainee provided a detailed estimate on the spot. Russ also responded to a few phone calls as we gathered other estimates and wanted explanation on the difference. He was able to give credible and verifiable reasons for the difference plus questions to ask the other companies. We chose Total Air because we were buying a critical improvement to our home. We wanted high quality equipment that was made to last and from a company who could provide the maintenance service for the years to come.

I used this company based solely on the fact that they seemed to have good reports here on Angie's List. However, I was not very impressed with the service. The first time, he spent the entire time in the attic. When he was done, he told me that I have a cracked inducer fan housing. Said this could cause the heater to short cycle and cause a buildup of carbon monoxide. He did not offer to take me back up there to show me this crack. I asked for an estimate on cost of repairs. Was told they would mail me one but he also wrote on the receipt that it would cost between $400-$500. I never received anything else in the mail and wouldn't order any repairs based on such a sketchy estimate. When I got ready to pay he quoted me $159. I had been quoted $89 on the phone so asked why it was more. He explained that this was the cost if I got their yearly package and it also paid for service to be done in the fall/winter on the heater. He also said that if I got the yearly package, it would save me 15% on the cost of repairs. So I paid the $159. Asked if they could finish the service on the A/C on a Saturday since I didn't want to take more time off from work. He said no problem, just call and schedule. I called to schedule and was told that to have them come back out to finish their job on a Saturday it would cost another $10. So, instead, I arranged for them to come out in two weeks when I knew I would have a day off again during the week. A different man came out to clean the outside unit and inspect that. When I walked around to watch what he was doing I asked to make sure he was going to clean it. He said sure. Wanted to know where the faucet was. When I told him he said that his hose might not be long enough. I went and connected my hose and ran it from the back yard to where the unit was. Got the feeling that if I hadn't, it would not have been done. When he was done he told me I was low on freon so he took care of that. It was less than a pound but they charge $36 for the freon. No problem with that. However, then he told me that the way these houses were built, I probably had a leak in the evaporator coils or something. Probably???? If so, where was the leak? He made no effort to "sniff out" the origin of the leak. And again, no idea what that would cost either. I have paid for service for the year, but after that will not use again. I will definitely be getting estimates from other companies before I get any "repairs" done. This company has lost its credibility with me.

The sales rep, Richard, did not sell mini-splits so I asked about a zone system. He discounted this, saying something about it would cause too much humidity. He even said the humidity was already high in the upstairs, telling me he could tell it was probably at 70% right then (little did he know I had a temp/humidity gauger on my dresser right next to me showing it at 45%!) Then he says he will put in a second unit, a one and a half ton unit to heat and cool the upstairs. He said the bottom of my second upstairs bedroom door would need to be cut so the bottom showed an additional 1 to 1.5 inches so air could leave the room (?). Then he showed me where he would install a return so air could be fed to the unit. He totally ignored the fact that it would be impossible to install any more ductwork, especially a return that would be larger than most, and run it to the second unit. Unless he would be removing part of my wall or roof (yes, roof), it was physically impossible. This did not stop him from saying that it was my best bet. On top of trying to sell me something he would not be able to successfully install, he then tried to scare me with stories of other companies using subcontractors. "You know what subs are, don't you? They are parolees. Ex-cons. I know a woman who had her jewelry go missing after she had an A/C unit installed by a company using subs." That isn't right and it isn't necessary.
Response from Total Air & Heat Co

"THE FACTS AS I SEE THEM ARE: OUR REPUTATION SPEAKS FOR ITSELF, OUR RATINGS ARE SOME OF THE HIGHEST ON ANGIE'S LIST. THIS MEMBER SIMPLY DOES NOT HAVE HIS FACTS STRAIGHT. HE MAY HAVE CONFUSED US WITH ANOTHER BIDDER. THE FACTS ARE: 1. WE DO SELL DUCTLESS SPLIT SYSTEMS AND HAVE MANY OF THEM INSTALLED. AIR CONDITIONERS CAN'T CREATE HUMIDITY, THEY REMOVE HUMIDITY! 2. WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS, NEVER INSTALLED ANY RETURN DUCTS IN THE ROOF, NEVER PROPOSED TO DO THAT. WE HAVE CUT IN RETURN DUCTS AND SUPPLY DUCTS THROUGH WALLS AND FLOORS. WE HAVE SUGGESTED THAT WALLS BE OPENED TO RUN DUCT. OUR GOALS ARE TO DO THE JOB RIGHT, AND SOMETIMES THAT DOES REQUIRE STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS. AS YOU STATED ABOVE: "MY UPSTAIRS IS VERY HOT AND HAS A STRANGE DESIGN." 3. ONE OF THE LARGEST TEXAS TRAINING ORGANIZATIONS FOR AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING REPAIR IS THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. ANYWAY YOU WANT TO LOOK AT IT, THESE ARE IN FACT "EX CONS" AND ARE IN FACT "PAROLEES". THE STATE OF TEXAS IS TRYING TO FIND JOBS FOR PAROLEES. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST PAROLEES AND WISH THEM THE BEST OF LUCK BUT UNLESS THEY CAN PASS A STRICT BACKGROUND CHECK THEY WON'T BE WORKING FOR ME. ALL OF MY EMPLOYEES MUST PASS A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, DRUG TEST AND MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD CHECK. THESE CHECKS ARE PERFORMED BY AN OUTSIDE VENDOR WHO SPECIALIZES IN PROVIDING THESE BACKGROUND CHECKS AND DRUG TESTS. THEN AND ONLY THEN ARE MY EMPLOYEES PROVIDED AN ID BADGE. ALL EMPLOYEES RECORDS AND INFO IS CONSTANTLY UPDATED MULTIPLE TIMES PER YEAR AND RANDOM DRUG TESTING IS PERFORMED. WHY WOULD ANYBODY WANT TO RISK FAMILY SAFETY? THAT'S WHY WE TELL POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS THAT THERE ARE MANY EX-CONVICTS WHO WORK FOR OTHER AIR CONDITIONING COMPANIES AND THEY SHOULD CONFIRM IF IT'S SAFE TO ALLOW THEM INTO THEIR HOME? SEEMS LIKE THE RIGHT THING TO DO IN MY OPINION. IN CLOSING I'M NOT SURE WHY YOU HAVE POSTED THE FEEDBACK YOU DID, IT SIMPLY IS NOT CORRECT. I CAN PROVE THE THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TRAINS MANY CONVICTS TO PERFORM AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING REPAIR. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT YOU WOULD HAVE AN ISSUE WITH US TELLING YOU OUR EMPLOYEES ARE SAFE TO ALLOW INTO YOUR HOME. I CAN PROVE THAT 100% OF MY EMPLOYEES ARE ID BADGED AND IT IS SAFE TO LET THEM INTO YOUR HOME TO WORK. I CAN PROVE WE HAVE INSTALLED MANY DUCTLESS SPLIT SYSTEMS. I HOPE YOU FIND A WAY TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS. BEST REGARDS, STEVE LAUTEN PRESIDENT TOTAL AIR & HEAT CO. SERVING THE DFW METROPLEX FOR 51 YEARS"

They gave me an appointment time 10:00 am. I was happy that they did not give me a four hour appointment window like most companies do. They arrived at 10:15. The technician was professional and put on shoe covers before entering the house. He checked out the furnace, drain line, the charge in the system, the amp draw, and cleaned the compressor. He spent 1 hour and 15 minutes working. I was impressed because the companies that I have used in the past for a yearly check up were only there for 10 minutes. I used the Angie's list coupon to get $10 off the regular price.
