We contacted Pella about replacing the windowpane, describing our product and what we needed done. They told us that they still had our information on file from when we had the window installed ~15 years ago. They quoted us $655.25 to replace a 12 x 64" sheet of tempered glass! They also informed us that if *WE* ordered the wrong glass that the glass was not returnable.
I contacted them reminding them that our window was a single sheet of tempered glass and not a gas filled multilayer insulated glass window, and I questioned whether the $655.52 cost was for just replacing this piece of glass or if they were going to replace the entire French door unit. It turned out that they were quoting us the cost of replacing an INSULATED glass window, even though we had specifically told them already that it was NOT insulated and even though Pella apparently did not even offer insulated glass in our product when it was installed 15 years ago. They revised the quote to $212.57 to replace the single sheet of tempered glass. The quote included $150 labor for 2 workers for 1 hour. We accepted this quote, as we seemed to have no other choice, and they scheduled replacement of our broken window for THREE WEEKS LATER.
On the day that they were to replace the window, they had scheduled the appointment for between 1 & 3 PM. At 1:25 PM they called to say that one of the two workers had had a family emergency and they would need to reschedule. They would TRY to work us in and not put us back at the end of the schedule. The next day ONE worker came out and spent an hour replacing the glass pane. Pella did NOT adjust the $150 labor charge because they had supplied one worker for 1 hour rather than 2 workers for 1 hour as contracted.
The worker did a pretty good job of cleaning up the broken glass. (Since it was tempered glass, the window shattered into hundreds if not thousands of pieces, but did not fall out of the frame until the frame was dismantled.) There was still some glass for us to clean up when he finished. I can see why the independent glass companies were reluctant to tackle the job. The frame that holds the glass did not go completely back into place, and in a couple of corners the adhesive/caulking extrudes out.
When we contacted Pella, they did not listen properly to our description of our product nor look carefully at their records of our product. As a result, they misquoted us $655.25 for the wrong product and made it sound like we would be financially responsible for THEIR mistake in ordering the wrong glass if we had not questioned it. They then took 3 weeks to schedule the repair, did not come on the scheduled date, and did not adjust the price when they did not supply the contracted workers. The installation itself was acceptable, but less than ideal.
I will NOT be purchasing Pella products in the future.
