It took two emails to convey the work we wanted because the nice people saw "gable vent" and passed. When we explained "siding, flashing, wijndow" we had Scott S. out for a look at a time that fit my schedule. He inspected the area and provided us with a written quote on the spot (Schulte has done enough work that they have captured their bidding metrics into a nice paper worksheet). We upgraded the repair by requesting HardiPlank vs Cedar and having both sides done. in our case the size of the boards would never exactly match because Cedar is a different size now than in the late 1960's. Scott was clear about what to expect. The Change Order was handled via email.
Clemente and his helper appeared on time to execute the repair, when they ran into problems they apologized, ran back to the shop (30 mi away) and came back armed for bear (extra equipment and materials). They were very approachable with questions, stacked wood that I could re-use for patching in the future, and cleaned up to the expected standard (which is to say we ALWAYS find some nails, wood chips, etc after a job but that's the standard).
We had the house painted 2 days later and the painters had no issues. Two days after that we tested and no leaks were found. A week later we had 2 days of rain - nice and dry.
Scott sent us a few emails touching base during this time to ensure the work was done correctly and to our satisfaction. Another call confirmed it was ok to bill and when we indicated we verbally approved a change order to add some house wrap to the side with the rotted wood - they said "shop supplies - no charge". Granted it wasn't much but it was the attitude that thrilled us.
We had previously used Schulte for a 1/2 roof replacement and they made good on a few hiccups along the way with a smile.
Everybody at the company was friendly and easy to work with. Aaron who wrote up
the contract, explained everything in detail so I could understand the what how etc.
of how things work. Good people. Felt comfortable working with them.
"We are a roofing company and what they wanted to do (expanding the barn) was more in line with a general contractor or builder. We told them this is not a project we would quote but offered referrals, one being the Hispanic gentlemen she mentioned. There was no need of follow up on our part. Our apologies if she did not completely understand that."
"Mark is not our repairman, he is our roofing specialist or salesperson. We call them roofing specialist because in a repair situation (customer has already determined they do not need a new roof; perhaps roof is still fairly new) he must first visit the site and diagnose the problem so we know exactly what we need to fix it. Many people know they have a leak but do not know what is causing it or exactly what is needed to fix it. Sometimes the leaks are not roof related but rather siding, window, or gutter issues. Therefore, as stated above, we send a man out first to determine what is the cause and what is needed. Mark made the initial scheduled appt and rather than forward it to our production dept. he decided to help the customer out and perform the small repair himself. She stated she needed it ASAP. Since he only needed to screw some flashings down and knowing she needed it done ASAP he left to go get screws. Before he returned she called, cancelled, and stated he ask to borrow her drill. Had this been scheduled through our production we would have had everything needed, but, Mark trying to help by doing it for the customer ASAP, seemed to have set off a perception of incompetence on our part. I think this is unfortunate but I believe Mark had her in his best of intentions. Again, No work was performed or charged for."
